i am using "sql server 2000 enterprise evaluation edition".i am running windows xp.i want to upgrade to "sql server 2005".so please suggest me a sql 2005 edition which provides functionality similar to sql 2000 enterprise evaluation edition and must be compatible on xp.please reply soon...coz i am working on my project.
We are migration few database from SQL 2000 Enterprise Server to the SQL 2005 Enterprise Server (64 bit-Itanium Server)
Problem :
- The performance difference observer was not much (Just 15-18%)
- The CPU Utilization goes to 100% immediately, when the software login screen appears and it sustains in between 90% to 100%
- Multi-User Access (3 or more concurrent users), the sql performance is tremendously slow.
Steps followed for Migration:
- We have used the backup and restore method to migrate the data from SQL 2000 Enterprise Server to the SQL 2005 Enterprise Server (64 bit-Itanium Server).
- We ran the DBCC DBREINDEX for each affected tables
- We executed the sp_updatestats procedure for all the tables
- Upgraded the DB compatibility version to 90
- Installed the SQL 2005 Enterprise Server (64 bit-Itanium Server) Service pack 2.
One thing that we observed, was the memory usage, on SQL 2000 the sqlservr.exe uses around 1.5 GB where as on the SQL 2005 its just 120 MB.
A normal select query on 2000 Server took 11-12 sec, having 10 lac records, and the same query on 2005 took 1 min (3-5 sec CPU process taken by sqlservr and rest by the Sever Management Studio.
The only differance noted was that on 2000 the entire data was displayed at one go where as in 2005 the data was displayed at the 1st sec, and was filling the rest in the buffer, and to finally display entire data it took 1 min.

one column os_priority_class shows a value = 32 ? what does this means.
In the MSSQLSERVER SERVICES, properties, there is a parameter displaying value
Advanced > Running Under 64 bit OS = No ? what does this means.
Could anyone pls suggest as to how to increase the sqlservr.exe memory area, and also how the enhance the performance.

Our ISP hosts our data on SQL Server Enterprise, but I also going to host the databases on my local machine.
As it's just local would Standard edition do? If I migrate the databases over, will it work?

Is there anything significantly better in Enterprise Manager 2000 vs. the old EM from SQL Server 7.0?
If so I'd be willing to pay the $50 for the SQL Server 2000 Developer
Edition to get it... if not it seems dumb to pay for anything when MSDE
2000 is free and I already have the old EM. (Although I have
installed MSDE 2000 as a new instance and can't figure out how to get
at it via EM.)

I have just discovered something with EM 2000. In the old days (SQL Server 7), you could right click on a table, choose OPEN TABLE -> SELECT ALL ROWS and get a nice little grid with the select results. The same is true in SQL Server 2000. One thing you cannot do is update a value in that result set, which WAS something you could do in SQL Server 7. If you try it in EM 2000, you get the error message "TRANSACTION CANNOT BE STARTED WHILE IN FIREHOSE MODE". ???????
Am I just missing something, or was Microsoft so worked up about putting XML into their product, they overlooked some of the simple things that were really appreciated (and sorely missed).
If anyone can provide some insight, it would be appreciated.

Can the SQL 2000 Enterprise Manager be successfully installed and utilised on a pc that currently has SQL 7 and is used to administer other SQL 7 servers? Can the SQL 2000 Enterprise Manager be used to administer SQL 7?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am attempting to install MS SQL 2000 SP2 on a Windows Server 2003 Enterprise SP1 box. The only installer I can find on the disc is in the MSDE directory and when I run it it immediately gives me this error:
"This installation package could not be opened. Verify that the package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer package."
I have tried copying the install files to my local hard drive for install, I have checked the version of my Windows Installer (3.1.4000.1840). I have the SP4 updates ready to go once it's installed, but I just cannot get past that point. I know that the same software version has been installed on other Windows 2003 systems, so why would it have a problem on this one machine?

I am having trouble with sql server timing out. I have the timeout set to maximum, and the query I am running is pretty simple. The data is about 10+ million lines, but It should not have a problem running queries on this. plus the timeout comes before the expiration of the timeout setting. The strange thing is, is that sometimes it will work if you just keep running the query. Has anyone run into this, and is there a fix? Also, sometimes if i link the table to an mdb and run the query through access, it will pull the results! what is that about?

I get an error stating that SQL is not compatable with this operating system. It is only offering to install the client tools.
Can someone give me a heads up here and let me know what is going on, because I know I had this installed before.

I have been using my SQL 2000 Enterprise Manager for many months but it suddenly stopped working. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the software 3 times and it is still not working. When I double click on Enterprise Manager, it doesn't run. Query Analyzer works fine.
I am on Windows XP. No change in system configuration recently or any s/w upgrade, etc.
Any advise?

I hope someone out there can help, cos i really need it.
We have a 2 node cluster + SAN that will be used as our SQL 2000 servers.
We have setup the cluster ok, and have tested failover with no problems.
However, when we try to install SQL 2000, it just hangs.
I have copied the enterprise cd to the local drive, and am installing from there.
We run the setup.bat, create the Virtual Server, and assign an ip address. At this point, it just hangs.
Upon checking the SQLSTP.LOG file, this is the last entry in the log:
Begin Action : DialogShowSdDiskGroups
I have found the Microsoft Technet Article 293788, which gives me a possible soloution, but we dont have any Resource Names or Groups that have the same name.
Can someone PLEASE give me an answer on how to fix this, or at least point me in the right direction.

Anywhere I can download sql 2000 server enterprise edition eval? I have a database running 2000 standard, wanted to test on 2000 enterprise to see if increased memory and enterprise edtion will help. With the intro of 2005, I can not find 2000 enterprise eval.
View 3 Replies View RelatedWe are running a two-node cluster for SQL Server 2000 Enterprise on Windows Server 2003. Each node has four processors and 4GB RAM. Our application is hosted on a seperate IIS server with 150-200 connections accessing the database via ADO.NET (ASP.NET 1.1). Our processor utilization has been high, averaging around 80% and out context switches/sec counter averages around 15,000. We are not using NT Fibers and our performance seems to be sluggish when the context switches/sec counter is high - over 10,000. In peak periods we se this counter hit 30-50,000. I have read articles that state NT Fibers have better performance in machines with 8 or more processors. Is this something that would also help in a four processor machine? The SQL Server is dedicated to SQL, i.e. there are no other applications running. I am also considering using the "Priority Boost" option... do these options really improve performance? I'm trying to squeeze as much performance out of these machines while waiting for new hardware to arrive. Thanks.

Since the way diagrams are handled changed, the tool for 2005 doesn't allow for the creation of diagrams when using it for 2000 (work sweet for everything else though!).I do not have access to a developer version of SQL Server 2000's tools, and thus no Enterprise Manager, leading me to my question: Are there any free utilities to replace this functionality? I don't have MS Access or Visio or anything like that unfortunately :(

However, sometimes Enterprise Manager will crash on me for no obvious reason(it generates errors, but this takes forever, so i kill it). It is not consistent, nor can I reproduce the error, but it happens about once a day, never at the same time. Anyone else see this? My pc has win2K professional on it.

We are thinking about installing SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition, however that would mean the test server (2000 Standard) and production server (2000 Enterprise) have different edtions of SQL Server. How much of a risk does this present? Later in the year we would upgrade test to SQL Server 2000 EE, but for a couple of months the environments would be different.

I have started studying SLQ Server 2000 at home as I have a Video Tutorial but I thought I need to install SLQ Server 2000 to follow the training. I have been trying to instal SLQ Server 2000 Enterprise Edition on both Windows XP Pro Pack2 and Windows 2000 but I get this message saying "Microsoft SQL server 2000 enterprise edition server component is not supported on this operating system only client component will be available for installation "
I do not know anything about SQL and I thought I must have been doing something wrong otherwise it would not give me the same warning on both operating systems.
I do not know what is it I do wrong and I would appreciate your help and assistance.

I had a problem today where I could not see column names and alltables had a _1 after them when viewing a Sql Server view inEnterprise Managere.g.TableName Company when added to the view would be named Company_1 andthe only columns available were 1 which was *(All Columns)After looking through the news groups I saw several occurrences ofthis problem but no answers that gave a fixAfter some investigation I found that it is caused when the databasename in SqlServer has a . in it!Test1 >> Fine the view designer works fineTest1.6 >> Problems as listed aboveI don't see why Enterprise Manager allows database names with .'s ifit is going to create such problems.

Im having an issue with SQL Server Enterprise manager. I cannot access an MSDE DESKTOP SQL Server 2000 installation that is on the same machine as enterprise manager.
I can access the MSDE Databae from another machine fine, but when I try to register that DB locally in Enterprise manager I get this error.
PC007 - Data source name not found and no default driver specified.
I had to install sqlserver 2000 using k=dbg and skip the MDAC install as it was giving me an install error but this shouldnt have mattered as I am running XP SP2 and it has MDAC 2.8 installed by default.
Any Ideas?
I have kind of an urgent need here. I need to know if there is a dll file or registry key or something of that nature that I can query on to find out if my SQL 2000 installations are Enterprise or Standard.
I understand I can do this using query analyser, but that will not work with my reporting tool (this is for reporting numbers of SQL installations in our very large enterprise for Microsoft license compliance).

When Trying to register a SQL Server using Windows Authentication, I get the following error:
Login failed for user '(null)'. Reason: Not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection.
When I edit the properties and make it SQL Authentication, it works fine. The SQL Server Service is starting up with a domain user account. If that makes any difference. Funny thing is, that my co-worker, can register the SQL Server in his Enterprise Manager using Windows Authentication. We are both Domain Admins and members of the servers local admin group. So, I'm not sure what to do now.
I checked under Security, Logins...and neither of us are listed under there.

I'm after some advice, I am looking for the best way to do this:
I have a SQL 2000 Clustered Virtual Instance which is of course Enterprise Edition as it is clustered. I need to upgrade to 2005, but dont need the 2005 Enterprise features, Standard will do, as this supports clustering.
The restrictions are that you cant upgrade 200Ent to 2005Std.
As this is a fairly complex environment, it has a default instance running on node 1 and a named instance running on node 2
I dont particularly want to uninstall both 2000 instances, and then install new 2005 instances
So is it possible to upgrade to 2005 ent, and then downgrade to standard. I have seen a suggestion without any details, that there is an undocumented sp, sp_update_resume, that might do this. Does anyone know about this
Or does anybody have any other suggestions. (the names of the instances have to be the same, as the existing instances)

If the answer is yes, How can I do that?
I think that reinstalling only the Enterprise Manager the DTS editor can be fixed.
