Greetings everyone, I am attempting to build my first application using Microsofts Sql databases. It is a Windows Mobile application so I am using Sql Server Compact 3.5 with Visual Studio 2008 Beta 2. When I try and insert a new row into one of my tables, the app throws the error message shown in the title of this topic.
'((System.Exception)($exception)).Message' threw an exception of type 'System.NotSupportedException'
My table has 4 columns (i have since changed my FavoriteAccount datatype from bit to Integer)
http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k71/Scionwest/table.jpg
Account type will either be "Checking" or "Savings" when a new row is added, the user will select what they want from a combo box.
Next is a snap shot of my startup form.
http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k71/Scionwest/form.jpg
Where it says "Favorite Account: None" in the top panel, I am using a link label. When a user clicks "None" it will go to a account creation wizard, and set the first account as it's primary/favorite. As more accounts are added the user can select which will be his/her primary/favorite. For now I am just creating a sample account when the label is clicked in an attempt to get something working. Below is the code used.
private void lnkFavoriteAccount_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
FinancesDataSet.BankAccountRow account = this.financesDataSet.BankAccount.NewBankAccountRow();
account.Name = "MyBank Checking Account";
account.AccountType = "Checking";
account.Balance = Convert.ToDecimal("15.03");
account.FavoriteAccount = 1;//datatype is an integer, I have changed it since I took the screenshot.
financesDataSet.BankAccount.Rows.Add(account);
//The next three lines where added while I was trying to get this to work.
//I don't know if I really need them or not, I receive the error regardless if these are here or not.
this.bankAccountTableAdapter1.Update(financesDataSet);
this.financesDataSet.AcceptChanges();
refreshDatabase();
}
the refreshDatabase() code is here:
private void refreshDatabase()
{
this.bankAccountTableAdapter1.Fill(this.financesDataSet.BankAccount);
//Aquire a count of accounts the user has
int numAccounts = financesDataSet.BankAccount.Count;
//Loop through each account and see which one is the primary.
for (int num = 0; num != numAccounts; num++)
{
//Works ok in frmMain_Load, but when my lnkFavoriteAccount_click calls this, it throws the error.
if (this.financesDataSet.BankAccount[num].FavoriteAccount == 1)
{
//Display the primary account on our home page. User can click the link label & be taken to their account register.
this.lnkFavoriteAccount.Text = this.financesDataSet.BankAccount[num].Name.ToString();
this.lnkFavoriteFunds.Text = this.financesDataSet.BankAccount[num].Balance.ToString();
break;
}
}
}
and my form_load code
private void frmMain_Load(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
refreshDatabase();
}
So, when I click on the lnkFavoriteAccount label, and my new row gets added, the app stops at the following line in my DataSet.Designer
[global:ystem.Diagnostics.DebuggerNonUserCodeAttribute()]
public byte FavoriteAccount {
get {
try {
return ((byte)(this[this.tableBankAccount.FavoriteAccountColumn]));
}
catch (global:ystem.InvalidCastException e) {
//Stops at the following line, this error was caused by 'if (this.financesDataSet.BankAccount[num].FavoriteAccount == 1)'
throw new global:ystem.Data.StrongTypingException("The value for column 'FavoriteAccount' in table 'BankAccount' is DBNull.", e);
}
}
set {
this[this.tableBankAccount.FavoriteAccountColumn] = value;
}
}
I have no idea what I am doing wrong, all of the code I used I retreived from Microsofts help documentation included with VS2008. I have tried used my TableAdapter.Insert() method and it still failed when it got to
if (this.financesDataSet.BankAccount[num].FavoriteAccount == 1)
in my refreshDatabase() method it still failed.
When I look, the data has been added into the database, it's just when I try to retreive it now, it bails on me. Am I retreiving the information wrong?
Thanks for any help you guys can offer.

Hi,
I got an strange problem with one of my packages.
When running the package in VisualStudio it runs properly, but if I let this package run as part of an SQL-Server Agent job, I got the message "The script threw an exception: Exception of type 'System.OutOfMemoryException' was thrown." on my log and the package ends up with an error.
Both times it is exactly the same package on the same server, so I don't know how the debug or even if there is anything I need to debug?

Hello,
I have a table for which I am iterating through using a foreach loop. On each iteration, I am updating the row with information from an SQL database. During certain cycles of the loop and SQL exception is thrown which I catch and deal with appropriately. However on the next cycle of the loop the SQL exception is still active and always goes into the section which deals with the SQL exception. I have run some tests and the SQL exception should not occur on subsequent loops, but it does.
What I am trying to say is....whenever there is an SQL exception is there anyway to clear it, or set it to null or destroy the SQL exception class. (Destructor perhaps?).
Regards
Dezzy

Hi,I have installed SQL 2005 RTM on a new server and I keep getting thiserror (described below) quite frequently. Was wondering if anyone has aclue on what's happening here. I tried googling but no success!This generally happens when I am browsing the tree in Object explorerin SQL 2005 Management Studio. I can be doing anything - like viewingdatabases, or viewing table list or viewing stored procedure list, etc.I get the following error (screenshot in URL link)http://img5.imageshack.us/img5/6274/sql2005error3vt.jpgWhen this happens and I click Continue, I can work in Management Studiolike queries, etc. - the summary window appears blank though. It doeshowever refresh the count of items in the list but the main windowdisplays no table list or view list or sp list (whatever the case maybe). I'm running a DTS package. It is moving transferring data VERY slowly and the local disk RAID is pegged in the performance monitor. There are no entries in the SQL Server Error Log, but if I run SQL Profiler, I see many entries like:
Exception 911 Error: 911, Severity: 16, State: 1 DTS Designer
I suspect something is wrong but have no clue how to go about debugging this. Any ideas?
When I do: SELECT description FROM sysmessages WHERE error=911, I get:
Could not locate entry in sysdatabases for database '%.*ls'. No entry found with that name. Make sure that the name is entered correctly.

I am creating a report in VS 2005 SP1 (all updates applied) on a Windows 2003 Server with 8GB of RAM. When I preview the report (about 120,000 records) it locks up my machine for about 5 minutes and then gives an error:
An error occurred during local report processing.
An error has occurred during report processing.
Exception of type 'System.OutOfMemoryException' was thrown.
This report has a somewhat complex query, but when I deploy the report to the server (Reporting Services 2005) it runs fine. I just hate to deploy the report each time I want to preview it. Is there a setting for VS that I can change to increase memory? Or is there something else I need to check?
Thank you for any assistance!

Hello.
Our GIS group is working with SQL Server 2005 in conjunction with ESRI's ArcGIS software. SQL Server is being used as a test bed until we formally migrate our existing Microsoft Access mdb's over. So, at this time we are conducting various tests and have the freedom to "blow up" our databases.
We are currently testing ArcSDE Workgroup edition, which will only work with SQL Server Express (SSE). SSE will let us create spatial joins and relationships, while maintaining data integrity. So one possible workaround was to detach the database from SQL Server 2005 and then attach it to SSE. Unfortunately, we ran into a problem in re-attaching the database back to SQL Server 2005.
The exact steps are as follows:
Back up database using back up tool in SQL Server 2005.
Detached database from SQL Server 2005.
Attached database to SQL Server Express (hereafter SSE).
Created a table in database while it was attached to SSE.
Detached database from SSE.
Attempt to attach database to SQL Server 2005 failed
Successfully restored database in SQL Server 2005 using Restore tool.
Step number 6 above failed and generated the following error:

Questions:
Why did I get this error?
Can incorrect or missing permission or ownership settings generate this kind of error?
When should one detach/attach a database?
I welcome your assistance and suggestions.

Not sure if there's a GP 8.0 forum, so giving this one a go.
I've added an AFTER UPDATE trigger to the RM00101 table (customer master) in a Great Plains 8.0 SQL Server 2000 SP4 DB. The trigger assigns field values to variables, constructs an update query, and executes the query on a table in a linked SQL Server 2005 DB.
The trigger works fine when fired as a result of a direct field update made through Enterprise Manager. However, when the same update is made through the Great Plains GIU (customer card window), an exception error is thrown:
"Unhandled database exception:
A Save operation on table €˜RM_Customer_MSTR€™ failed accessing SQL data
EXCEPTION_CLASS_DB
DB_ERR_SQL_DATA_ACCESS_ERR€?
The odd thing is that if I drop the trigger from the RM00101 table, the exception error still occurs. Not just on the record originally updated, but on all records and all fields within the record.
Code for the trigger follows:

GO

Hi,
Here's the code I've used to try and update a new user's IP Address to a Table called Customer who's key field in the UserId:
Getting the Exception Error "Incorrect Syntax near'('. " Any ideas?
protected void ContinueButton_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
//Get the ip address and put it into the customer table - (the instance of this user now exists)
MembershipUser _membershipUser = Membership.GetUser(); //This gets the active user if there is someone logged in...
Guid UserId = (Guid)_membershipUser.ProviderUserKey; //This gets the userId for the currently logged in user
string IPAddress = Request.UserHostAddress.ToString();//This gets the IPAddress of the currently logged in user
string cs = ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["ConnectionString"].ToString();
using (System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection con =new System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection(cs))
{
con.Open();
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand cmd = new System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand();
cmd.Connection = con;
cmd.CommandType = System.Data.CommandType.Text;
cmd.CommandText = "UPDATE Customer SET(IP_Address = @IP_Address) WHERE (UserId = @UserId)";
cmd.Parameters.Add("@UserId", System.Data.SqlDbType.UniqueIdentifier).Value = UserId;
cmd.Parameters.Add("@IP_Address", System.Data.SqlDbType.Char, 15).Value = IPAddress;
cmd.ExecuteNonQuery();
con.Close();
}
Thanks.

I'm trying to get to grips with the formview control and have a problem regarding where an exception is raised if SQL server raises an error when an insert is taking place. I am new to both asp.net & c#
I have put the following code in the SqlDataSource2_Inserted & Formview1_Inserted events as a way of determining where the exception is raised:
if (e.ExceptionHandled){ string exceptionmessage = e.Exception.Message; lblStatus.Text = exceptionmessage;}
These two events are the only one's that have the ExceptionHandled and Exception properties.
I run the code with data that will raise a duplicate key error from SQL Server but the error is not being caught by either of these two handlers. All I get is a page that starts with
Server Error in '/SourceCode' Application.
Violation of UNIQUE KEY constraint 'IX_reftblAntigens'. Cannot insert duplicate key in object 'reftblAntigens'.The statement has been terminated.
Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code. Exception Details: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Violation of UNIQUE KEY constraint 'IX_reftblAntigens'. Cannot insert duplicate key in object 'reftblAntigens'.The statement has been terminated....
Is there somewhere else I should be looking to handle this sort of thing? I thought using the databound controls would make life easier but I'm actually finding it more of a pain than coding everything myself.

Hello,
Just yesterday I implemented SqlCacheDependencies on my ASP.NET 2.0 web site for SQL Server 2005. My SQL Server 2005 database is in mode 90, mirrored with a second database server. Now I am getting Error 17310 while running very simple statements, but only on a specific table.
We have a table called "tblSchools" which, due to negligence and incompetence, has a maximum size of over 8,000. I plan on fixing that eventually, by splitting all the long varchar(2048) fields off into other tables.
I wanted to use SqlCacheDependencies on this table, for every single column. So I created a DateTime column called LastChanged and created a trigger. I am using LastChanged as a DateTime type instead of a TimeStamp/RowVersion type because I thought it would be more useful.
Here are the changes made:
---------------------------
-- Adding the column...
ALTER TABLE tblSchools
ADD
LastChanged DateTime Null
GO
-- The program uses this stored procedure to watch the "LastChanged" column.
CREATE PROCEDURE [apCacheWatchSchool]
@SchoolID int
AS
select LastChanged from dbo.tblSchools where SchoolID = @SchoolID
GO
-- Any updates on the table cause the LastChanged column to be updated with getdate()
CREATE TRIGGER [UpdateLastChanged_TS]
ON [dbo].[tblSchools]
AFTER INSERT,UPDATE
AS
BEGIN
SET NOCOUNT ON;
update [dbo].[tblSchools]
set LastChanged = getdate()
where SchoolID in (select SchoolID from inserted);
END
GO
---------------------------
After adding this column and the trigger and s-proc, any update to any row in tblSchools fails with error 17310. It CANNOT set LastChanged to anything. It has to remain NULL. I was able to perform the following operation (as long as the tblSchools.LastChanged updating trigger [UpdateLastChanged_TS] was disabled): "update tblSchools set SchoolName = 'ZZZZ' + SchoolName where SchoolID = 185" -- so, it's not some kind of row length limit. I think it's a limit on # of columns that can be dealt with. I don't really know.
I don't know where the problem is occurring. I am just telling you why. I got around the problem (temporarily) by simply having the trigger update a DateTime column in another table, and having the SqlCacheDependency watch that column in the other table. No biggie.
As for moving some of the enormous varchar columns off of tblSchools... I don't really care enough. I guess that's why it's been like this for so long.
So, my problem is fixed, I just wanted to submit this bug report so you can at least fail gracefully in the next version of SQL Server.
I have the log/txt/mdmp files available, and can provide them upon request; they're too big for this form, sorry. Please contact me at plushpuffin AT wwddfd.com if you have any questions.

Hi All,
We have written a multithreaded application in which we are maintaining separate Database connections for each thread. these connections are opened and closed at the start and exit of the thread.
We have observed that even if there is only one thread running ( application thread), execution of simple Select queries some times throws Native exception(Error - 0xc0000005 ).
This error comes intermittently. Execution of same query doesn't throw exception.
Further investigation by breaking the debug at the time of native exception and then looking into the stack trace shows that native exception has occured at one of the Native API (CompileQueryPlan() ) which is being called implicitly by the SQL Mobile.
Each time when we see native exception stack trace shows failure at CompileQueryPlan() call.
Let me know if this is a known defect in SQL Mobile 2005 or there is something else that is causing native exception.
Thanks,
Nikhil

I have an app running Windows CE 5.0 and SqlServerCE 3.0. Occasionally, one of the production units will throw an exception with the following stack trace but no exception message:
Exception Msg:
Stack Trace: at System.Data.SqlServerCe.SqlCeCommand.ProcessResults()
at System.Data.SqlServerCe.SqlCeCommand.CompileQueryPlan()
at System.Data.SqlServerCe.SqlCeCommand.ExecuteCommand()
at System.Data.SqlServerCe.SqlCeCommand.ExecuteReader()
at System.Data.SqlServerCe.SqlCeCommand.ExecuteReader()
at XX.MobileApp.frmXXX.LoadData()
This is not something that I have been able to reproduce in our shop. I even take their database and run it here in our shop with out such errors. Does anyone know some possible causes for this error?
Sorry, I don't have more info to give becuase this is all I have to work with since I cannot reproduce in our shop. If the exception object exposes a property for the HResult, I would be able to provide that.
I appreciate your repsonses.

Hi,
I've read already every thread in this forum regarding this topic with no results.
SQLServer and the corresponding services are at actual update level. The reporting services worked for 4 months without this problem. Suddenly, most of the time all reports return an internal error (it is like 70-30 for internal error) not depending which render format is used.
The system logs (eventlog, iis) show no errors. The ExecutionLog of RS show rsInternalError.
Looking in the log files in RS log directory, there is following stacktrace:

As it seems, after an iisreset the first rendering always works perfect. HD space is enough.
Any ideas?

Is there a way to access sql servers alternatively ie if one server is not responding read data from another sql?

{
// Establish ConnectionSqlConnection oConnection = GetConnection();
// build the commandSqlCommand oCommand = new SqlCommand("get_issid", oConnection);
oCommand.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure;
// ParametersSqlParameter paracse_email = new SqlParameter("@cse_email", SqlDbType.VarChar, 50);
paracse_email.Value =cse_email;
oCommand.Parameters.Add(paracse_email);
SqlParameter paratech_email = new SqlParameter("@tech_email", SqlDbType.VarChar,50);
paratech_email.Value = cse_email;
oCommand.Parameters.Add(paratech_email);SqlParameter parasubject = new SqlParameter("@subject", SqlDbType.VarChar, 50);
parasubject.Value = subject;
oCommand.Parameters.Add(parasubject);SqlParameter paraissue_details = new SqlParameter("@issue_details", SqlDbType.VarChar, 500);
paraissue_details.Value = issue_details;
oCommand.Parameters.Add(paraissue_details);SqlParameter pararesponse = new SqlParameter("@response", SqlDbType.VarChar, 500);
pararesponse.Value = response;
oCommand.Parameters.Add(pararesponse);SqlParameter parasolv_date = new SqlParameter("@solv_date", SqlDbType.DateTime);
parasolv_date.Value = solv_date;
oCommand.Parameters.Add(parasolv_date);SqlParameter paraissid = new SqlParameter("@issid", SqlDbType.Int);paraissid.Direction = ParameterDirection.Output;
oCommand.Parameters.Add(paraissid);
try
{
oConnection.Open();
oCommand.ExecuteNonQuery();issid = int.Parse(paraissid.Value.ToString());
}catch (Exception oException)
{throw oException;
}
finally
{
oConnection.Close();
}
}
