I want to write a program to automatically backup everything every night. And of couse have the ability to restored the whole database if necessary.
How should I do it? Are there any tools exist that I can use? What is the best way to deal with backup/restore in hosting environment?

What is needed for a hoster / hosting company to be able to host .Net applications with SQL Server 2005 Express database?
My questions regarding this issue basically are:
If a hoster has several sites hosted on a server, can each one of them have its own SQL Express database?
Or, do they have to be migrated to full SQL Server?
What is with the Upsize Tool for SQL Server Express (or something like that) - is it available?
Generally, how do hosters do their hosting - do they have SQL Server SPLA signed? Or do they just have SQL Server 2005 Express and allow users just to copy their web sites and databases to server?
I would really appreciate any answer.
Kind regards,
Luka

I'm currently on a shared hosting plan which has a SQL Server component to it.
At the moment, I'm on 2000. I have a DTS package that runs locally and does a backup of the remote database and backs that up using sequential file numbering.
I'd like to move to 2005, but I'm not sure quite how to replicate this process. Basically:
- I don't have access to the server as it's shared hosting
- I don't have the credentials for backups and stuff like that
- They only send backups on demand
- They don't perform regular backups on your data
- They won't have the backups saved to my web directory
If I:
- use import/export, which is almost the only thing I know I can use, I can only copy tables and views. I'd like to copy everything (SPs, Functions, ect)
The only thing I can come up with is software that would compare the structure and data and generate T-SQL to copy it over (ie. Apex SQL).
Is this my only hope on SQL 2005?

Hello,
we are thinking about consolidating our Vendor Sqlserver needs into single big Sqlserver box.
We currently have dedicated boxs for each vendor who requires a Sqlserver Dbs, for example Siemen Sqlserver Dbs are on one box, Clintrac Dbs are on one bx, etc.
It looks like we can save some money on HW/SW and maintenance cost by the consolidation. That's assuming that the Dbs can get along fine.
I was wondering if folks on this group can share their experience or thoughts about above setting.
Thanks,
yi

Hi, I'm developing a website using VWD 2005 Express, which needs a Membership system and a products database. Using the VWD inherent Web Site Administration tool makes the membership set up easy but by default it creates a 'Local' SQL database in a folder named 'Apps_Data' in the VWD project. My question is: considering I will need to upload my web site to a Hosting Service, would it be better to change the default so that the membership systems, and the product database I need, are created in an SQL 'Server' database instead of a 'Local' database?
The hosting service I am considering using is having a bit of a problem understanding this question, I hope it makes sense to someone or am I asking a stupid question?
Regards
Sean.

I lost my database on my pc as I format my hard drive. Now, how I can get a copy of my ms sql server database from my hosting to work with my local pc? I need to have a local copy so that I can develop my site without internet connection. For your information, I used Hostforlife.eu hosting service. I have searched and tried many methods to do it, but no luck yet. For example, I created a backup on Hostforlife.eu and restore backup file on my pc, but nothing happens. Then I created a new database, and re-created its structure same as the one on Hostforlife, then I used the import wizard to import data from them to my pc. Again, nothing happens.

Windows 2003 backup utility uses the shadow copy option that allows it to copy open files.
Therefore, can I use this utility to backup the .mdf and .ldf files for my SQL 2000 database?
I can then attach the .mdf files if I need to restore the database to another server.
Can anyone tell me if this is safe? I've tried it and it worked but I'm worried there maybe some lurking danger in using this approach.

Dear all
I am pretty new to the database administration and was wondering if i could get some advice here so i have a head start.
Unfortunalety i have came to the conclusion the hard way that the SQL Agent on Ms SQL 2000 doesnt work properly when it comes to database backups. I discovered that the backups it creates and it claims that are performed succesfully do not work.
So i was wondering what would be the proper way to go in creating a backup of a highly critical database. The database is in MS SQL 2000. I am not required to have the application roll over to the backed up data in case the main one crashes. But it is absolutely necessary to be able to restore the databse to a most recent working copy. So i guess performing a backup once a day would do. Loosing data from a day would not be such a big deal since i have other ways of restoring that days data, as long as i have the full database up to the previous day.
I was looking at database mirroring but that is not available with sql 2000.
Also i though of as a possibility to run a replication on the SQL 2000 database and replicate to SQL 2005 database which aparently has got the SQL agent working properly. And then run the agent on the SQL 2005 database which would backup the copy daily?
Any advice is apreciate and if there are any white papers or books i could look at that would be great.
Cheers

I know it's not possible to backup a database in SQL2005, and restore to 2000. But, I've been asked if there are any 3rd party tools which can do this - such as SQL Litespeed - but I can't see anything regarding this on their website.
Does anyone know if litespeed or Redgate SQL Backup can restore to 2000 from 2005 ?
Thanks in advance,

I'm using SQL Server Management Studio Express and I'm trying to figure out how to copy a table(s) from my local database to my web hosting database. I know how to do it in 2000, but it's completely different now. Is this feature not allowed on SSMSE? If so, then how do I deploy database tables to a web host? Also, how do you add local database(s) to SSMSE? I tried to use 'attach database' in SSMSE and it wouldn't allow me to navigate to My Documents folder where the database resides. Thanks...

Help,I have a database that has a data file of 2GB and a log file of 31GB.In enterprise manager, when I choose shrink it says there is 30GB ofunused space. When I shrink the database, it does not shrink,(however it says it has completed).I've done a complete backup, tried shrink again, no dice. I thenbacked up the database (which the backup was 1.9GB), deleted thedatabase and made a new database with 2,048MB for the data and samefor the log file. When I restore, the log file jumps up to 31GB again. When I check thespace when I use the shrink, it again says I have 30GB of unusedspace. How on earth do I get this file to shrink?I've been able to shrink other databases, but not this one.TIARob

I'm trying to see the differences between Backup/Restore and Attach/Detach. I backup and detach a database from SQL Server 2000 SP3 and then attach and restore it to SQL Server 2005 SP1.
The differences I noticed are:
1. The restored database has a much larger initial size (database size is same) for data and log.
2. The attached database has a last backup date
3. If the backup is restored over a database, the restored database is showing owned by the database owner of the database restored over but syslogins and sysusers do not match.
I don't understand why #1 happens.
Are there any other differences between Backup/Restore and Attach/Detach?
Thanks,
Peter

Hello,
I am attempting to restore the database from within VB.NET application I am making the following 3 calls:
RESTORE FileListOnly FROM DISK = 'C:MyDatabase.dat'
USE Master RESTORE DATABASE MyDatabase FROM DISK = 'C:MyDatabase.dat' WITH NORECOVERY, MOVE 'MyDatabase' TO 'C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQLDataMyDatabase.mdf', MOVE 'MyDatabase_log' TO 'C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQLDataLDFMyDatabase.ldf', REPLACE
RESTORE DATABASE MyDatabase FROM DISK = 'C:MyDatabase.dat'
using SMO. This logic works fine with small *.dat files, however when using *.dat file of about 4Gb I get an error on the 3d restore database call:
ExecuteNonQuery failed for Database 'master'.
An exception occurred while executing a Transact-SQL statement or batch.
Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding.
Operator aborted backup or restore. See the error messages returned to the console for more details.

The same program/logic also works fine when I use MS SQL 2005 and it runs fine from MS SQL 2005 Query Analyzer for both 2005 and 2000 databases. There seem to be only problem with MS SQL 2000 from within VB.NET. Anybody has any idea? I'd appreciate any response. Thanks

Does anyone use One and One Internet (UK) for their hosting?
I use them and when I published my site all membership feautures wouldn't work, I called the One and One support and they said that their servers only support SQL Databases if they were created using their own tool in their control panels.
How would I get my site to use their database, I'm really not sure.
If anyone else could help me out I'd be grateful.
Kind Regards

Hello,
I am an ASP.NET 2.0/SQL 2005 web developer, and I have run into a huge frustration for some time now that I can't seem to get past. My goal is to develop SQL databases for my costomers on my development machine, and then upload the completed database out to my host. I have not found a host that allows this yet. Some hosts do not allow remote SQL connections altogether, and the best hosts I have been able to find allow remote SQL connections, but do not allow SSIS or DTS packages to run to transfer database objects to the production server.
What does this mean? Well, I have to manually transfer or recreate individual stored procedures and recreate primary, foreign, and other table constraints. I cannot just run a DTS package to transfer the completed objects. So this means duplicating effort, changes for mistakes, and more server downtime during site upgrades. I have called so many host providers, and I haven't found one that can get me past this.
Also, I contacted Microsoft to ask about Licensing (thinking I would just lease a dedicated server), and the only option I can use is SPLA licensing. The catch, I have to lease the OS through SPLA as well, and all the hosts I have contacted put the OS on the server themselves. This means I would be paying for the OS twice.
Ideally, I would just love to find a shared web host package that I could use efficiently with my SQL development. Am I missing something? If anyone has any advice, please help! I would be so appreciative!!! Thanks.
Regards,
Jeremy
