Aug 20, 2007

I have a notebook with windows vista ultimate edition. For developement i have Ms visual studio 2005 and sql server 2005(with all the required and latest SPs) on it. For the past few months i have been working on the machine without any hitches. Just 2 -3 days back some windows updates got installed on the machine and guess what!!!!!! the sql server service just stopped working. The service wont start no matter what. I
have tried almost solution that i came across on the internet and it wont work out. I unistalled and reinstalled the server as but to no avail. The database engine now wont intall as the sql service wont start during the server installlation.
While browsing through the internet i didnt come across anyone with a similar problem! Am i the first one to be in such a situation
give your comments and share any relevant experience.
P.s the windows upgrades installed on the system were all security upgrades so why should they effect the sql server working.

I successfully installed SQL Server 2005 and then used the ALTER DATATBASE statement to move around my data and log files for Model, MSDB and TEMPDB. I stopped SQL SERVER Services and physically moved the files to their new locations.. now the service won't start? I get this in the SQL Server ERROLOG:

I can log on to the Server with the account that starts the services and open the .mdf and .ldf files in Notepad.. not sure what's going on.. I then gave the Domain Account that starts the Services Full Control on each of the volumes that I moved the files to.. I checked down to the file level to make sure that the permissions propogated.. the service still won't start.. can someone help?

I recently installed SQL Server 7.0 on my desktop workstation. I has been working great until yesterday when services wouldn't start. The Service Manager gave me a message "An error 1069 - (The service did not start due to a logon failure.) occurred while performing this service operation on the MSSQLServer service." It appears to be a permission problem, but my profile hasn't changed, I have admin rights on my workstation. Can anybody help?

The link provided by the program (below) does not connect to any page.
I would appreciate some help, thanks in advance.

I have mentioned this problem before but it has not been resolved. I am installing MS SQL Server Express Advanced i.e. using SQLEXPR_ADV.EXE.
During the initial checks, i get a warning about hardware requirements and I have read the posts about the install failing if the CPU does not support prefetching but I am running a P4 3.0GHz (twin core) CPU with 512MB RAM on Windows XP Pro SP2.
The installation fails at SQL Server Database Services during "Configuring Microsoft SQL Server":
"Starting SQL Service: MSSQL$SQLEXPRESS"
If I click the Retry button, the system goes away and then comes back with the same message. If I click cancel, various roll-back actions are performed and the install fails
Is this the default name for the SQL Server instance ? I thought it would be named after my machine name i.e. GLKD239680SQLExpress ?
Any ideas anyone ? I have not had much luck with installing this despite 2 PC rebuilds and scanning the forums for solutions.... I can post any log files if needed
Thanks

I had a strange experience with MS SQL Server 2005 Express Edition installation, I am running a P4 3G Processor, 1 GB of RAM, Windows XP SP2, 300 GB HDD (SATA if it matters at all :) ) And using Visual Studio Pro 2005.
I have managed to install the SQL Express with no hassle at all, then had to format my HDD, and start from scratch, to make a new home for my VS 2005 Pro (The 300 GB HDD) And managed to install the SQL Express as part of the VS 2005 without any problems, after using it for 3 months now, I've started a new project in VS 2005, and tried to add a new SQL DB, but it had failed for several times.
I€™ve decided that the files got corrupted for some reason and tried to reinstall the MS SQL 2005 using the original SQL Express installation file I've used before, but without joy.
I thought that it is conflicting with some new MS Update patch and downloaded the latest SQL Express advanced installation, but that did not fix the problem either.
The message I'm getting every time I attempt the installation is" SQL Server service failed to start" with all the bla bla about the online books and whatever useless stuff to learn how to start the service manually.
I have uninstalled the whole thing, including VS 2005, .NET Framework, and any registry trace of the SQL Server installation, but again all in vain.
Finally, some smart wizard suggested in one of the threads that if your computer is not part of a domain, you should run the SQL service as a local service, using the advanced option during the first step of the setup.
And guess what! It worked!!!!
My Question is why did it work during the first two installations, without me fiddling with the advanced installation feature?
My computer was and still is, not part of any domain, my hardware did not change at all, and I had the installation failing with or without any software installed!

Hi All,
We seem to be being plagued by the error below by our SQL Server agent. This happens almost everytime we restart the server that has been running for a day or two.
Our SQL Server Agent uses a none expiring domain credential. I understand that this problem only happens when the profile being used by the SQL Servr Agent has changed (password change). What puzzles me is that the login is A ok and no changes has been made to it's password.
We always resolve this problem by changing the login used in the SQL Server Agent to local and after that, returning it back to it's original domain login. Unfortunately, we cant always do this everytime something goes wrong.
Can anyone please help us shed a light on this? We're using SQL2k with SP3a. Thanks!
Error:
An error 1069 - )The service did not start due to logon failure) occurred while performing this service operation on the SQLServerAgent service.
Regards,
Joseph

Hi Guys
I have my Sql server 2005 running perfectly (until yesterday) on vista. But today when I tried to connect to the server I get error 3417 meaning my master database needs rebuilt or repaired.
I tried all sort of techniques I found on internet like checking if my data files in data dir are not compressed and for the SQL Server Servies it logs on local account with interact with desktop checkbox checked. But no luck.
I tried to use setup.exe in my installer CD to rebuild master database but it seems the cmd doing nothing. To rebuild, I use the following command “start /wait setup.exe /qn INSTANCENAME=<instance> REINSTALL=SQL_Engine REBUILDDATABASE=1 SAPWD=<New SA Password>. This cmd runs but due to some reason my master db is not being repaired. Ideally, I should see recent date change for this file.
Please advice how can I connect back to my server again making sure my databases are not lost.

Hello all,
We are deploying an application using SQL Server Express to a wide variety of desktop and laptop machines. We are currently trying to decide whether we should install the SQL Server instance service to start automatically at startup or not. In the latter case, our application would start and stop the service.
Starting automatically will make our app load more quickly, which is important to our users. However, our support team is concerned that leaving the service running will leave our databases vulnerable to becoming "suspect" if, for example, a laptop user's battery dies suddenly. Of course this will always be a problem if the app is running, but our support team believes that having the service running all the time will increase the chances of this happening. One reason for their concern is that an older version of the software used MSDE which was running all the time, and they saw a good number of suspect database issues.
What is the best practice for leaving the service running, especially when there are a lot of laptop users?
Thanks,
Ben

We have changed the Network Domain name of a SQL server and restarted before changing any of the settings in SQL server. When we now try to start the SQL server service manager we get the following error
Your SQL server is either corrupt or has been tampered with. Unknown package id please rerun setup
Any suggestions on how to get the SQL server back on line without having to take the server down and changing the Netowrk Domain Name back ??
Cheers
SR

We encountered an error the other day that was causing us major head-aches trying to resolve.
Error: 1053 -- Could not start the SQL Server Integration Services service
In addition to SSIS not starting up, we had errors trying to launch Management Studio.
The above errors started happening after we deployed a small release that included editing the machine.config file.
To make a long story short, make sure the machine.config file is well formatted and is not missing any double quotes (") or < /> .
Hopefully this information can help someone out.

Hello all,
I am intsalling SQL 2005 in an activepassive cluster. The OS is Windows 2003 with SP1. Everything installs OK but the sql server service cannot start afterwards. There are many access errors in the Security Event log - see example below - and numerous "SSPI handshake failed with error code 0x8009030c while establishing a connection with integrated security; the connection has been closed. " errors in both the SQL and Application event logs. I have tried installing SQL in both mixed mode and under Windows Authentication and get the same errors. I can install SQL 2005 outside of the cluster on both nodes. Other items of note: This was a SQL 2000 cluster. I uninstalled SQL 2K, the virtual name was changed (IP remained the same) and the DNS entry was updated to reflect the new name. Early in the installation process - 3 or 4 days ago - I got a few errors about the Server Principal Name had to be updated but when I do a setspn -l the both nodes are listed and the entries look fine, though there are no entries for the sql service (MSSQLSvc). Not sure if there should be entries for the virtual name, but there aren't any for either the old or new name. Does the new virtual name need to be added to AD? Here is the security error - Event ID is 560 and it looks like there's a problem with Remote Access and is generated when trying to access either node:
Category: Object Access
Type: Failure Audit
Event_ID: 560
User: NT AuthorityNetwork Service
Object Open:
Object Server: SC Manager
Object Type: SERVICE OBJECT
Object Name: RemoteAccess
Handle ID: -
Operation ID: {0,134558507}
Process ID: 1516
Image File Name: C:WINDOWSsystem32services.exe
Primary User Name: CM-OHCO-DS006B$
Primary Domain: SWNA
Primary Logon ID: (0x0,0x3E7)
Client User Name: NETWORK SERVICE
Client Domain: NT AUTHORITY
Client Logon ID: (0x0,0x3E4)
Accesses: Query status of service
Privileges: -
Restricted Sid Count: 0
Access Mask: 0x4
One other informational message that may be of use - looks like there's a problem with dll's for remote access, though this isn't pertaining to SQL:
The description for Event ID ( 0 ) in Source ( srmservice ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: srmservice error: 0, Started the agent (srmagent.exe)..

Sorry if this is a simple question, I've not seen any similar posts.
I'm just finished installed SQL 2005 on Vista Business edition (first time for both). I subsequently installed SP2 for 2005.
Upon completing the SP2 installation, the SQL Server Surface Area Configuration manager opened asking me to grant admin rights to the account I used to install the software. The account I used is the local admin account on the machine (only account on the machine as this is my dev box) .
Nothing shows in the two boxes below on this dialog, "Available Privelages" is blank and "Privelages granted is blank".
In addition, if I go to SQL Server Configuration Manager, and click on SQL Server 2005 Services, nothing shows in the right pain. It's as if the software installed, and yet no instance of the database exists or is running.
My thought was that the admin account I used to install the software doesn't have sufficient privelages to to start the SQL Server or SQLBrowser. So I went to computer management, Local Users and groups (machine isn't on a network yet), and made sure this same account is part of the administrators group.
Any ideas on how I should solve this?
