Timestamp Data Type

--sql server 2000
I have a table that has say 100 rows and 4 columns, 4th
one being datatype timestamp.
when a row is inserted the timestamp column also has a
value inserted.My understanding is that whenever the row
is updated(say any of the other three column values are
updated)the timestamp value also changes.
My question is suppose the same row is updated thrice at 3
different times.Will the timestamp VALUE after the last
update guarenteedly be greater than the ones for the early
2 updates..Eg
End of Update1 :Value1(timestamp)
End of Update2 :Value2(timestamp)
End of Update3 :Value3(timestamp)
Does sql server guarantee that Value3>Value2>Value1 ???
If this is true can I use this in any business logic?
Any help highly appreciated !

Jul 20, 2005HiI'm interested in using the timestamp data type & I have some questions.As far as I can understand the contant of a timestamp column is a binaryvalue.Is there any connection between that value and a valid date (as the wordtimestamp means) or is it a left over from the days when the timestampvalue really was a datetime type (so it says in Books Online) ?or is it just a unique identification of a row (a tuple id) ?I tried converting a timestamp value to datetime and I got a date in 1900.Thanks for any answerDavid Greenberg

I've duplicated the data structure, with the exception of not including the IDENTITY specifier on INT columns, so that the archive table will keep the value that was generated in the original table. This is all going well, until I tried to copy the data over where the column is specified as a timestamp data type. I've looked this up and found a couple of things. First, documentation for SQL 2000 says,
Timestamp is a data type that exposes automatically generated binary numbers, which are guaranteed to be unique within a database. Timestamp is used typically as a mechanism for version-stamping table rows. The storage size is 8 bytes.
And then documentation for the soon to be released SQL 2016 on the rowversion data type says,
The timestamp syntax is deprecated. This feature will be removed in a future version of Microsoft SQL Server. Avoid using this feature in new development work, and plan to modify applications that currently use this feature.

How To Convert SQL Server Datetime To Oracle Timestamp (or Other Type With Similar Precision)?
Jul 10, 2007In SQL Server I've created a linked server to an Oracle database. I am trying to insert (within the context of an sql server table trigger) an SQL Server datetime to an Oracle column with similar precision. Oracle timestamps are not compatible with sql server datetimes and I don't know how to convert the data (or if I should use a different type of column to store the data in Oracle). I have full control over the structure of the Oracle table so I can use a different type if timestamp is not best, but I need the destination column to have at least the same precision as the sql server datetime value. What is the easiest way to do this?

Converting DB2 Timestamp Data To SQL Server 2005 - Problems With Unique Index
May 24, 2007I am attempting to move a timestamp data column from DB2 to SQL Server 2005. Normally not a big deal but the column is part of unique index.
The DB2 timestamp has seconds of ss.ssssss but SQL Server only has ss.sss.
Most all the times entered into this column are a from an automated process so they are really close together timewise.
Here is what I have come up with so far:
1. Fast Load OLEDB with a batch of 10,000 records at a time
2. On the fail of the batch redirect rows to a regular table load OLEDB insert task
3. On the fail of the single insert redirect rows to script that ups the seconds one tick.
4. Attempt one last insert of the modified rows
5. If fail, then store the record off to a delimited text file
I am hoping to get the number of records that wind up in the delimited text file to be a very small number and not in the 1,000+.
Any help would be appreciated.

Dec 14, 2005After testing out the application i write on the local pc. I deploy it to the webserver to test it out. I get this error.
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: The conversion of a char data type to a
datetime data type resulted in an out-of-range datetime value.
Notes: all pages that have this error either has a repeater or datagrid which load data when page loading.
At first I thought the problem is with the date, but then I can see
that some other pages that has datagrid ( that has a date field) work
just fine.
anyone having this problem before?? hopefully you guys can help.

Converting A Data Type Double To A Type Float Using A Data Adapter && SSCE 3.5

I can populate a dataTable with type double (C#) of say '1055.01' however when I save these to the CE3.5 database using a float(CE3.5) I lose the decimal portion. The 'offending' code is:

This did not happen with VS2005/CE3.01.
I have tried changing all references to decimal (or money in CE3.5) without luck.
I'm beginning to think that string may be the way to go!!!!!!!

It's necessary to update the datatable adapter as the 3.01 and 3.5 CE are not compatible.
COnverting Numeric Data Type (Oracle) To Date Data Type Using SSIS
Mar 7, 2007We have some columns in a table where the date is stored as 19980101 (YYYYMMDD). The data type for this column is NUMBER(8) in Oracle.
I need to copy rows from Oracle to SQL Server using SSIS. I used the Data Conversion transformation editor to change it to DT_DATE, but the rows are not being inserted to the destination.
On Error, If I fail the component, then the error is :
There was an error with input column "ORDER_DATE_CONV" (1191) on input "OLE DB Destination Input" (29). The column status returned was: "Conversion failed because the data value overflowed the specified type.".

Convert Text Data Type To Smalldatetime Data Type
Oct 9, 2007I have a field that is currently stored as the data type nvarchar(10), and all of the data in this field is in the format mm/dd/yyyy or NULL. I want to convert this field to the smalldatetime data type. Is this possible?
I've tried to use cast in the following way, (rsbirthday is the field name, panelists is the table), but to no avail.
SELECT rsbirthday CAST(rsbirthday AS smalldatetime)
FROM panelists
the error returned is "incorrect syntax near 'rsbirthday'.
I'm rather new to all things SQL, so I only have the vaguest idea of what I'm actually doing.

I have imported sql Server 2005 database data into one mdb file.After importing a data into the mdb file, above column
data type converted into the memo type in the Access database.
now when I am trying to import a data from this MS Access File(db1.mdb) into the another SQL Server 2005 database, got the error of Unicode Converting a memo data type conversion in Export/Import data wizard.
Could you please let me know what is the reason?
I know that memo data type does not supported into the SQl Server 2005.
I am with SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition with SP2.

How do we write xml into xml type. Jul 6, 2006I am trying to use the Bulk Insert Task to load from a csv file. My final column is a bit that is nullable. My file is an ID column that is int, a date column that is mm/dd/yyy, then 20 columns that are real, and a final column that is bit. I've tried various combinations of codepage and datafiletype on my task component. When I have RAW with Char, I get the error included below. If I change to RAW/Native or codepage 1252, I don't have an issue with the bit; however, errors start generating on the ID and date columns.
I have tried various data type settings on my flat file connection, too. I have tried DT_BOOL and the integer datatypes. Nothing seems to work.
I hope someone can help me work through this.

Aug 3, 2005Hey, I have a big problem that i wanna search data from SQL by DateTime like thatselect * from test where recorddate='MyVariableWhichHoldDate'i use variable that holds Date info.i searched a lot infomation on net but there is no perfect solution. i know why this occur but there is no function to solve this problem. i used a lot of ways. it accept yyyy-mm-dd format but my variable format is dd-mm-yyyyy . is there any function for this problem? and any other solution.thanks for ur attentionregards

Mar 30, 2007 I am using Visual Studio 2005 and SQL Express 2005. The database was converted from MS Access 2003 to SQL Express by using the upsize wizard.
I would like to store the current date & time in a column in a table. This column is a smalldatetime column called 'lastlogin'.
The code I'm using is:

This code works fine on my local machine and local SQL server. However at the client side this code results in the error as mentioned in the subject of this thread. I first used 'datetime.now' instead of 'getdate()', but that caused the same error. Then I changed the code to 'getdate()', but the error still remains.
The server at the client is running Windows Server 2000 UK . My local machiine is running WIndows XP Dutch.
Maybe the conversion from Dutch to UK has something to do with it. But this should be solved by using the 'Getdate()' function..... ?
How To Export Data Containing Timestamp
Feb 15, 2007In a database supplied by a vendor, I'm trying to export to our test database several tables to which we've added data but I keep running into an error 'trying to insert row version column'. The vendor has included a timestamp column in every table. What I need to do is exclude that column from the export-hopefully without writing explicit SQL for every table.

May 4, 2007I am using SQL server express as my web site's backend and need tostore more than 8000 characters in a varchar field. When I useVarchar(Max) the field contents are saved but appear as a singlesquare in my recordset. What am I doing wrong? The data appears inthe table, but does not appear in my recordset. If I switch thefieldtype back to VarChar it works, but only up to 8000 characters.How do I store more than 8000 characters AND display it through arecordset on my pages?

Jul 23, 2007I'm trying to use the SSIS Execute SQL Task to pull XML from a SQL 2005 database table. The SQL is of the following form:

FOR XML PATH('MessageStatus'), TYPE

FOR XML PATH('Report'), TYPE
For some reason I can only get this query to work if I use an ADO.NET connection type. If I try to use something like the OLEDB connection I get the following error:
<ROOT><?MSSQLError HResult="0x80004005" Source="Microsoft XML Extensions to SQL Server" Description="No description provided"?></ROOT>
Can anyone tell me why the SELECT ... FOR XML PATH... seems only to work with ADO.NET connections?
