Sql2005 Upgrade Queston

Nov 30, 2006

Hi guys,

I have done an in-place upgrade of a SQL2000 server to SQL2005 Ent. The upgrade was very smooth for the most part but when I check the versions of my databases they still say 8.0 and not 9.0. I'm able to change them to be 9.0 but I'm wondering why they were not changed automatically during the upgrade process? Any ides or is this something I have to be aware of for future upgrades?

Thanks for your time.

Where To Keep Dts(s) If I Don't To Upgrade Them Packages In Sql2005

Nov 30, 2005

Hi,
reading BOL of 2005 and have few questions about dts and SSIS

question #1
if I don't want to upgrade my DTS to SSIS ,no way I can save it in
msdb of 2005 ,so I have to do following

1. DTS package have to be saved as a COM-structured storage file
2. execute dts as dtsrun /Ffilename /Npackage_name /Mpackage_password

Am I right or missing some options ?

question #2
If I want to modify package in 2005 I have to do following
1. Export package to file from msdb
2. Use Studio to modify and test it
3. Drop package from msdb
4. Import package to msdb from file

Thanks

Msg 2715 After Upgrade To SQL2005

Mar 12, 2008

After upgrading to MSSQL 2005 we have stored procedures which get this error
Msg 2715, Level 16, State 7, Procedure prc_sel_accruals, Line 37
Column, parameter, or variable #15: Cannot find data type umoney.

The user data type is defined in the database. I tried recompiling the SP, which suucceeds but then fails on execution.

The SP works under SQL2000. Is there anything we need to do after the conversion?

Upgrade From SQL2000 To SQL2005

Mar 10, 2008

Hi,

I'm running a VB6 app with MDAC 2.8 on Windows Server 2003 SP1.
I create an ADO recordset with a SELECT statement which returns an empty recordset.
I then add 2 new records to it with AddNew and later perform an UpdateBatch.
Before the SQL upgrade it worked fine but now errors with:
'Cannot convert a char value to money. The char value has incorrect syntax.'
I did a SQL Trace to find out what the Updatebatch was actualling sending to SQL (listed below).
This works fine when I run it on Query Analyser using SQL 2000 but fails on SQL 2005.
I worked out the problem is linked to the columns NewValue and OldValue both are varchar 70.
The first insert has them defined varchar(7) and varchar(1). This insert succeeds, but the second insert has the columns defined as varchar(18) and varchar(12). This one fails (unless they only contains numbers!).
I'm confused.
I've read that sp_executesql has changed for SQL2005.
Any ideas anyone?

Thanks

Howard

Upgrade To SQL2005 - Installed Instances

Nov 5, 2006

My SQL2000 databases did not upgrade to SQL2005.  When I look at the Properties>>Options>>Compatibility Level the only options I have is version 7 and version 8... version 9 - which is SQL2005, is not there.

So what did I do?  During the upgrade process  - the installation wizard -  I made a couple of choices that I believe might have lead to my current condition.  The first thing is that I chose to select a installed instance.  The second choice I made was to use a domain user account for the Authentication.  The second selection I believe had nothing to do with the condition, but I did notice that my Systems Admin user account for SQL is no longer availble... which is a problem because now when I log into the SQL Management Console... it's using the domain name to authenticate rather than using the SA name like it was in SQL2000.

So here is what I think the solution is... I need to create a new Server Registration and create the databases in the new instance and then restore the data from SQL2000 to SQL2005 new instance, and then I can change the Compatibility Level to version 9.

The only issue I still don't have an answer for is the authentication into SQL.  I want to not use the domain user account... how can I change this or can I?  This also creates an issue when creating the ODBC connection as it wants to use the domain user account to verify.

So if someone can let me know if this is the right direction?  Also any suggestions... i would greatly appreciate it!

Flat File Source Queston

May 17, 2006

I want to read the following file using the Flat File Source flow:

10000 Router
20000 Hub
10000 Switch
30000 Server
40000 Harddisk

Spaces are used between the numbers (e.g. 10000) and the following text (e.g. Router). Each line is temrinated by a {CR}{LF} pair. I would normally think of this as a "fixed width" file.

But in the Flat File connection manager, if I use format "Fixed width", the preview shows a row width of 1 character wide (the first row contains the number "1"; the next row contains "0", and so on for the remaining 3 rows.in the first line) Not what I had in mind. How do I setup SSIS to handle this file in intended maner?

TIA,

Barker

P.S. I never had any trouble with this type of file under Sql 2000 DTS. Also, have you noticed the crappy-looking "bitmap" displayed when one wants to click and define columns for a fixed-width file?

SQL2005 SP1 Upgrade Failed : The Specified Driver Is Invalid

Jan 9, 2007

We are getting a failure when upgrading to SP1 for SQL2005.  We're running Windows 2003 Enterprise Edition SP1.  We're running 4 SQL 2005 instances and 6 SQL 2000 instances on this machine.  One of the four 2005 instances did upgrade successfully - don't know how or why.

Looking at other postings, it seems that the 10 lines or so preceding "value 3" in the upgrade log file (under C:WINDOWSHotfixSQL9Logs) are helpful in diagnosing the problem.

Upgraded SQL2000 To SQL2005, SQL2005 VERY Slow

Dec 27, 2005

I just upgraded my SQL 2000 server to SQL2005. I forked out all that money, and now it takes 4~5 seconds for a webpage to load. You can see for yourself. It's pathetic. When I ran SQL2000, i was getting instant results on any webpage. I can't find any tool to optimize the tables or databases. And when I used caused SQL Server to use 100% cpu and 500+MB of ram. I can't have this. Can anyone give me some tips as to why SQL 2005 is so slow?

Install Sql2005 32 Bit After Removing Sql2005 64 Bit

Sep 19, 2007

I am unable to install 32-bit SQL Server Integration Services on the server due to something that was left behind by the 64-bit version.

I've uninstalled SQL Server 2005 64-bit and when I try to install the 32-bit version of Integration Services, I get this error: "Failed to install and configure assemblies C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft SQL Server90DTSTasksMicrosoft.SqlServer.MSMQTask.dll in the COM+ catalog. I can't seem to figure out how to resolve this problem with the COM+ and I can't remember if Integration Services is required.

Can anybody please advise?

Jul 8, 2007

Hello,

I have a vb program that include a dts package that has been saved to vb with sql2000 dts wizard and works very good.

Now that I upgrade my website to sql2005, this vb dts package doesn't work.

The error I get is:

I searched in the internet how to make dts package in sql2005 and save it to vb and found no information about it.

What Can I do to get the vb code of the dts package I create in sql2005 or how do i migrage the sql2000 vb dts package code to sql2005?

Thanks,

MSSQLServer could not be started. Verify you have sufficient priveleges to start system services. The was no choice but to hit cancel and then the set up progressed with a final message of 'SEtup failed'.

Here is a portion of the error log:
Attempting to recover in-doubt distributed transactions involving Microsoft Distributed Transaction Coordinator (MS DTC). This is an informational message only. No user action is required.
Database Mirroring Transport is disabled in the endpoint configuration.
Starting up database 'master'.

Linking SQL2005 On 64-bit To SQL2005 On 32-bit OS.

Nov 13, 2006

I have some production boxes on Win 2000 32-bits OS and some production servers have been upgraded to Win2003 64-bit OS runing SQL Server 2005. There are also a number of Win2003 32-bit OS running SQL 2005.

The issue is that when linking the 64-bit production servers to the 32-bit boxes running SQL 2005 / Win 2003 OS, the linking seems to succeed, but I am unable to see a number of entries in sys.objects. Typically, these objects are User Stored Procedures.

Moreover, the linking seemed to have worked, but data extraction does not take place between the servers. However, there are no errors. The objects (user stored procs) exist on the 64-bit side, but linking does not actually happen.

Microsoft KB has addressed this in SQL 2000 case in this KB article, but has not suggested a solution for SQL 2005.

Any ideas? Has anyone else encountered this?

Thanks.

Upgrade Advisor Post-upgrade

Dec 6, 2006

Greetings,

I have a client whose DBA upgraded their SQL 2000 database to SQL 2005. They still have it running in 8.0 compatibility mode, for various reasons, and would like me to help them develop a migration strategy to get them to full 9.0 compatibility.

My question is: can I run the Upgrade Advisor on a SQL 2005 engine database running in 8.0 compatibility mode and get anything useful? I already know there will be some issues with existing DTS packages but it would be nice to catch any other issues in advance.

I know that the Upgrade Advisor was run before the upgrade took place but to my knowledge the report was not saved and none of the recommendations were followed.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Lon

In Place Upgrade Vs Side By Side Upgrade

Jun 1, 2007

SQL 2000 -> SQL 2005 upgrade on windows server 2003 ... We've done numerous side by side types of upgrades which have the advantages of being able to migrate things at a slower pace with limited downtime. I have a situation where it seems like it would be the least amount of work to do an in place upgrade involving 22 transactional in-house developed databases and associated in-house developed applications. There's no replication, no DTS packages, nothing I can think of that would complicate the upgrade. I was wondering if there's people out there that have done lots of these and haven't had any problems OR if there have been lots of problems. Anyway, any advice would be appreciated.

SQL2005 CPU

Jun 5, 2008

Dear all,

Is it possible to say sql server 2005 to use this much number of CPU..?

For Example I have 1 CPU License of SQL 2005, but I have 2 sockets in my physical box. One socket is having 2 cores. So I want to say the SQL server (2005) to use the 2 cpu's only( i.e Any of one socket)

Please advise me to do this.

I have one more question,
Is there any CPU limitation for SQL 2005 and 2008? If Yes how much cpu we can allot for the SQL 2005 and 2008

Thanks
