Sqlcmd And Osql Error HResult 0x2 SQL Server 2005 Exp
May 16, 2007
Hello,
I get following error trying to use SQLCMD OR OSQL
Named Pipes Provider: Could not open a connection to SQL Server [2].
Sqlcmd: Error: Microsoft SQL Native Client : An error has occurred while establi
shing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failu
re may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not
allow remote connections..
Sqlcmd: Error: Microsoft SQL Native Client : Login timeout expired.
I searched this forum for answers and I found one solution where it was said that Remote connections for TCP and Named Pipes needs to be enabled. I have them enabled, but I still get this error. I had working SQL server before, but I had to uninstall it. Now after installing ti again I started to get this error.
Anything else besides disabled remote connections cause this problem? I'm trying a local connection. I heard elsewhere that this could be firewall related, but shouldn't it use local connection always when I try to connect it with sqlcmd and no other parameters given?

I get this error trying to upgrade my SQLCMD package:
"The installer encountered an unexpected error installing this package. This may indicate a problem with this package. The error code is 2755"
I've seen other threads addressing this but not for the SQLCMD installer. They suggested either not having write permission or not running from the local C: drive. I'm an Administrator on the system and the package is on the C: drive. So, what else? Thanks.

I guys,
I have this store procedure which does a bulk insert to a session table from a XML file. This store procedure used to work fine until couple of month ago and now all of the sudden it stopped working. Whenever this procedure is executed I get following error:
Msg 6511, Level 16, State 82, Procedure up_XNetSessionBulkInsert, Line 42
Failed to initialize the Common Language Runtime (CLR) v2.0.50727 with HRESULT 0x8007000e. You may fix the problem and try again later.
I also tested same procedure on the development sql server and it works fine. the settings on the production and development are same.
I was wondering if any of you have a solution for it. Here is the procedure which causes error.

Hi I am trying to make a backup of my SQL server 2005, used with Web Developer 2005 Express, in osql.exe (can't find any other way of doing it). I get the error that "under the default settings SQL server does not allow remote connections".I connect to it fine from the Web Developer 2005 and my application . I followed another post's instructions where I enabled the TCP/IP and named pipes for "Protocols for SQLEXPRESS", but didn't work. In fact when I changed TCP/IP properties/ IP Addresses/TCP Dynamic port to nothing , and TCP Port to 1357, the server wouldn't start again !! (not doin THAT again)Regards Amanda

As a complete beginner regarding SQL Server, I installed SQLExpress and lots of other things Microsoft told me to (without understanding why) accepting all the defaults offered.
I can make a connection to the server with "SQL Server Management Studio Express", create a database and add one two tables and views.
But all other things I've tried seem to go wrong without me having the slightest idea why, e.g.:
% SQLCMD.EXE -S swansqlexpress
HResult 0xFFFFFFFF, Level 16, State 1
SQL Network Interfaces: Error getting enabled protocols list from registry [xFFFFFFFF].
The above for instance when the protocol "Shared memory is enabled". If any combination of the other protocols are enabled, then I get a different error message.
I also cannot use the ODBC Management Tools to define a DSN connecting to SQLExpress ("Server does not exist or connection refused).
What I really want to do is to import data, using ODBC, from a different RDBMS into SQLExpress. Before writing my own scripts to do this, I had hoped that there would have been some GUI interface to SQLExpress with a nice little button saying "import external data". Is their such a beast?

Hello,
I am using sqlcmd for SQL server 2005. I install sql2005 with default instance name. It should be MSSQLSERVER.
However, when using sqlcmd, like sqlcmd -S (local)MSSQLSERVER, it always aborts and suggests a wrong connection string.
I try to find any instance name under servername, but I can't find a command argument with sqlcmd.
So how can I solve the connection string problem? I can connect to the server using "sqlcmd -s (local)" though.
Or, how can I find the instance name of the server? Or maybe any gramma error using sqlcmd to access instance name?
Thanks for your any inputs.

Aaron

This is the command with parameters:

Up to that line, everything works fine...what could be wrong?

Hi All,
Been doing some testing with SQLCMD and variables for installation scripts, enclosed below is some source code.
The one problem, I've been getting is the following error:
Incorrect syntax near 'certification'
This has been tested only in SSMS utilising the run in SQLCMD mode.
This error only occurs on the SQLCMD variable replacement, where it replaces $(Cert_Schema) for the word Certification.
Running the CREATE Synonym with the word Certification hard-coded into the script works.
Any ideas?

I work with February CTP of SqlServer 2008.
I have an Assembly with several UDTs inside. Version of assembly is 1.0.*
I use CREATE ASSEMBLY statement to register this assembly, and it runs without any errors. Then I rebuild CLR solution without doing any changes in source code. In that case the only difference between new and old assemblies is version (difference in fourth part of version).
Then I try to update assembly in SqlServer. I use
ALTER ASSEMBLY <name>
FROM <path>
WITH PERMISSION_SET = UNSAFE, UNCHECKED DATA
statement for this. Statement runs with error:
Msg 6509An error occurred while gathering metadata from assembly €˜<Assembly name>€™ with HRESULT 0x1.
I found the list of condition for ALTER ASSEMBLY in MSDN:
ALTER ASSEMBLY statement cannot be used to change the following:
· The signatures of CLR functions, aggregate functions, stored procedures, and triggers in an instance of SQL Server that reference the assembly. ALTER ASSEMBLY fails when SQL Server cannot rebind .NET Framework database objects in SQL Server with the new version of the assembly.
· The signatures of methods in the assembly that are called from other assemblies.
· The list of assemblies that depend on the assembly, as referenced in the DependentList property of the assembly.
· The indexability of a method, unless there are no indexes or persisted computed columns depending on that method, either directly or indirectly.
· The FillRow method name attribute for CLR table-valued functions.
· The Accumulate and Terminate method signature for user-defined aggregates.
· System assemblies.
· Assembly ownership. Use ALTER AUTHORIZATION (Transact-SQL) instead.
Additionally, for assemblies that implement user-defined types, ALTER ASSEMBLY can be used for making only the following changes:
· Modifying public methods of the user-defined type class, as long as signatures or attributes are not changed.
· Adding new public methods.
· Modifying private methods in any way.
But I haven€™t done any changes in source code, so new version of assembly satisfies all this conditions.
What could be the reason for such behavior?
P.S. I€™ve got the same error, if I add or change any method in assembly before rebuilding.

Hi All... I'm trying to upgrade one of our MSDE-based products to SQL 2005 Express. The installation of the product includes the use of a bat file that makes several OSQL calls. This bat file runs on the machine that has SQL 2005 Express installed and is failing - times out trying to connect. I've gotten away from the bat file and am now just trying to run OSQL against the db from a dos prompt. I'm getting the following:
C:Documents and Settingscdehaven>osql -E
[SQL Native Client]Named Pipes Provider: Could not open a connection to SQLServer [2].
[SQL Native Client]Login timeout expired
[SQL Native Client]An error has occurred while establishing a connection to
the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by
the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote
connections.
Any thoughts? Thanks much!!

I searched and found similar questions on this forum, but nothing quite fits my situation.
When I try to run the SQLCMD per the instructions given on the 2nd page of the Guided Tour, the command aborts with the following message.
HResult 0x2, Level 16, State 1Named Pipes Provider: Could not open a connection to SQL Server [2].Sqlcmd: Error: Microsoft SQL Native Client : An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections..Sqlcmd: Error: Microsoft SQL Native Client : Login timeout expired.
I had to run the command from the command prompt window by manually navigating to sqlcmd's subdirectory to see this message. Using the Run window results in the command window closing before the message can be read. I tried using both my machine name and "localhost." Same result.
What is a local vs. remote connection? How could I perform this via a local connection, assuming that's the problem? Or how can SQL Express be configured to allow the remote connection? Did I do something wrong on the install?

I have a process that is running on the os. This process is picking up FTP files every 5 min, it renames them so not to confuse them with the new files, copies all renamed files into one file to be used by bulk insert, runs the bulk insert to populate a table, and then runs the stored procedure that scrubbing the data and insert it into another table. For every transaction that I do in my stored procedure, I do the error checking as follows:
IF @@error <> 0
BEGIN
ROLLBACK TRANSACTION
RETURN
If my stored procedure encounters an error, return statement will stop it from running. If this happens, I need to stop the process that is running on the os as well.
Questions:
How can that be accomplished?
How to restart the stored procedure ones the error has been corrected?
Thank you for your help.

Hi All,
You have to forgive me but I am relatively new to this. I created a batch file which would call a SQL Server Agent Job. The said job calls SSIS packages. The last step for the job was to update a table which contains the next run date for the job. The batch file, after calling the job, would then query the table where the next run date is stored and place it in a log file. However, it seems that the log file gets updated first. The user who clicked on my batch file assumes that the job is finished and would proceed to run another program which scans all the records affected by the job. Since the job is not yet finished, the few records that were affected are the ones that are only scanned leaving the other records that are yet to be transferred.
Does calling SQLCMD from a batch file spawn a new thread for the job?
Why does the date get updated even though the job is not finished yet?
I have attached the bat file I created. Below that also is the control flow
@echo off
echo.
echo Executing job PRD_ICBS...

echo Please wait...
SQLCMD -Q "EXEC msdb.dbo.sp_start_job @job_name='TRANSFER_DATA'"

I want to run a stored procedure, from a .bat file.
Here is line 1 of the .bat file
osql -S SISPROD -d gSchool -E -Q "xSP_Attendance_Post_All_1Day '0708'"
When I run it as a Schedule Task, get
Run-time error '-2147217904...' Procedure 'xSP_Attendance_Post_All_1Day' expects parameter '@sy' which was not supplied.
The '0708' is the @sy parameter.
What is wrong with the command?
The weirder thing is that when I get a command prompt, any osql command gives me this:
'osql' is not recognized as an internal or external command,...'
Unless I run the .bat file -- then I get the same error as the 1st above.
SQL Server is not installed on this server. How does the Scheduled task run osql (although with the 1sterror above)? The task is running as "me", Active Directory user, same as I am logged on to server but cannot run osql at all.
TIA

I have access to SQL-Server and have OSQL available (and other utilities I don't know how to use).
I have already found that I can access the server using OSQL, but I don't know the rest of the parameters for OSQL or how to use them. I need to build tables, relationships, indices, stored procedures, views, etc.
Could someone point me to some documentation where I can learn how to use OSQL?
