Stored Procedure Reference Different Schema
Jul 22, 2013
I am trying to build a stored procedure reference two diffrent tables with same name but diffrent schemas based on the login_user or who calls the procedure. I have developed the following procedure but still ot able to get it..The table test_table exists two times within the system
User1.test_Table
User2.TestTable
if i am user1 calling the procedure should reefernce user1.test_table and vice versa for user 2.
alter procedure dbo.test_proc (@pUsername varchar(150))
with Execute as caller
as
Begin
Select System_User
Select * from Test_Table
End

I want to have a Stored procedure call another stored procedure gathering the info from some of the information SP#1 and use it calling SP#2...
For example sp_Help returns columns when executed (Name, Owner, Object_type).
So how can I reference the Name column and pass it to SP#2
Exec sp_Help
...?
SP#2 name=sp_help.Name ???
Thanks

We have a stored procedure that makes a decision to pull records from one of two servers.
If one of these servers became unavailable but was no longer queried would the stored procedure still work? Doesn't SQL recompile stored procedures periodically?
Something like this:
If @ServerAIsDown=1
begin
select * from ServerB.dbo.MyTable
end
else
begin
select * from ServerA.dbo.MyTable
end

Hi All
I have a SP that i create tables and other objects on another database.
Creating table work well.
declare @s nvarchar(2000)
set @s = 'use db01'
set @s = @s + 'CREATE TABLE ABC (recid int)
exec (@s)
------------------------------------------------------------------------
But if i try to create a schema it gives error :
'CREATE SCHEMA' must be the first statement in a query batch.
declare @s nvarchar(2000)
set @s = 'use db01'
set @s = @s + 'CREATE SCHEMA AAA
exec (@s)
How can i solve it?
Thanks.

Hi there,
I am a fairly experienced programmer, but new to SQL Server - I understand basic DB theory well enough, but don't have much practical experience with using SQL Server.
I'm working on a project at the moment, where, as part of the spec, users can create 'systems' in the database. For example, in a parts database for a pumping station, there may be 10,000 parts. Rather than have one huge database for, say, 10 pumping stations, we would prefer to have 10 smaller databases, each dedicated to its own system. The schemas would be identical.
I think one approach to this would be have an empty database in SQL server (with the correct tables/schemas/relationships etc) and then copy that within SQL server, with a new name (the system name), probably using a stored procedure.
My question: Is this possible, is there already a stored procedure in SQL Server (2000) to do this, or do I have to write one? Writing a SP to physically create the database from scratch would be a nightmare, I'm hoping there is a simple 'copy_db to new_db' type stored procedure. Maybe there is a program can read a DB and create a script to re-create the DB under a new name?
Any information greatly appreciated.
Mark Wills.

I was hoping to instantiate a channelfactory from a clr stored proc in order to send messages to a wcf endpoint but VS 2005 wont allow refs to anything other than what it calls "SQL Server" targets. Is calling a wcf endpoint from clr sp's possible? I've alreay read the article on serialization under ss2005 but dont believe it has the answer to this particular piece of the puzzle.

Is there a way to bypass the syntax checking when adding a stored procedure via a script?
I have a script that has a LINKed server reference (see below) .
INSERT
INTO ACTDMSLINKED.ACTDMS.DBO.COILS ..etc.
ACTDMSLINKED does not exist at the time I need to add the stored procedure that references it.
PLEASE to not tell me to add the LINK and then run the script. This is not an option in this scenerio.
Thanks,

Hi all - I'm trying to optimized my stored procedures to be a bit easier to maintain, and am sure this is possible, not am very unclear on the syntax to doing this correctly. For example, I have a simple stored procedure that takes a string as a parameter, and returns its resolved index that corresponds to a record in my database. ie
exec dbo.DeriveStatusID 'Created'
returns an int value as 1
(performed by "SELECT statusID FROM statusList WHERE statusName= 'Created')
but I also have a second stored procedure that needs to make reference to this procedure first, in order to resolve an id - ie:
exec dbo.AddProduct_Insert 'widget1'
which currently performs:SET @statusID = (SELECT statusID FROM statusList WHERE statusName='Created')INSERT INTO Products (productname, statusID) VALUES (''widget1', @statusID)
I want to simply the insert to perform (in one sproc):
SET @statusID = EXEC deriveStatusID ('Created')INSERT INTO Products (productname, statusID) VALUES (''widget1', @statusID)
This works fine if I call this stored procedure in code first, then pass it to the second stored procedure, but NOT if it is reference in the second stored procedure directly (I end up with an empty value for @statusID in this example).
My actual "Insert" stored procedures are far more complicated, but I am working towards lightening the business logic in my application ( it shouldn't have to pre-vet the data prior to executing a valid insert).
Hopefully this makes some sense - it doesn't seem right to me that this is impossible, and am fairly sure I'm just missing some simple syntax - can anyone assist?

Hi all,
I have 2 sets of sql code in my SQL Server Management Stidio Express (SSMSE):
(1) /////--spTopSixAnalytes.sql--///
USE ssmsExpressDB
GO
CREATE Procedure [dbo].[spTopSixAnalytes]
AS
SET ROWCOUNT 6
SELECT Labtests.Result AS TopSixAnalytes, LabTests.Unit, LabTests.AnalyteName
FROM LabTests
ORDER BY LabTests.Result DESC
GO
(2) /////--spTopSixAnalytesEXEC.sql--//////////////
USE ssmsExpressDB
GO
EXEC spTopSixAnalytes
GO
I executed them and got the following results in SSMSE:
TopSixAnalytes Unit AnalyteName
1 222.10 ug/Kg Acetone
2 220.30 ug/Kg Acetone
3 211.90 ug/Kg Acetone
4 140.30 ug/L Acetone
5 120.70 ug/L Acetone
6 90.70 ug/L Acetone
/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
Now, I try to use this Stored Procedure in my ADO.NET-VB 2005 Express programming:
//////////////////--spTopSixAnalytes.vb--///////////
Public Class Form1
Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click
Dim sqlConnection As SqlConnection = New SqlConnection("Data Source = .SQLEXPRESS; Integrated Security = SSPI; Initial Catalog = ssmsExpressDB;")
Dim sqlDataAdapter As SqlDataAdapter = New SqlDataAdaptor("[spTopSixAnalytes]", sqlConnection)
sqlDataAdapter.SelectCommand.Command.Type = CommandType.StoredProcedure
'Pass the name of the DataSet through the overloaded contructor
'of the DataSet class.
Dim dataSet As DataSet ("ssmsExpressDB")
sqlConnection.Open()
sqlDataAdapter.Fill(DataSet)
sqlConnection.Close()
End Sub
End Class
///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
I executed the above code and I got the following 4 errors:
Error #1: Type 'SqlConnection' is not defined (in Form1.vb)
Error #2: Type 'SqlDataAdapter' is not defined (in Form1.vb)
Error #3: Array bounds cannot appear in type specifiers (in Form1.vb)
Error #4: 'DataSet' is not a type and cannot be used as an expression (in Form1)
Please help and advise.
Thanks in advance,
Scott Chang
More Information for you to know:
I have the "ssmsExpressDB" database in the Database Expolorer of VB 2005 Express. But I do not know how to get the SqlConnection and the SqlDataAdapter into the Form1. I do not know how to get the Fill Method implemented properly.
I try to learn "Working with SELECT Statement in a Stored Procedure" for printing the 6 rows that are selected - they are not parameterized.

I'm migrating a dotnetnuke website from SQL Server 2000 to SQL Server 2005 and have run into a problem with one of the stored procedures.
The database objects seem to have upgraded successfully to use the db schema identifer from the dbowner identifier. However I am having a problem with a particular stored procedure trying to execute another stored procedure.
When the following procedure is called, it seems that the db engine has forgotten the schema context and therefore can't find the called procedure. Has anyone come across this before and is there a workaround other than modifing every SP that uses EXEC?
ALTER PROCEDURE [myschema].[dnn_Forum_StatisticsGet]

@ModuleID int,
@UpdateWindow int = 12,
@TabId int
)

I surfed a lot of the internet piecing this together. I have a database that gets copied every night from a live database so users can run queries against it, so I needed to be able to recreate a stored procedure from within ASP.NET. Also, I needed to take information I was importing from a .CSV file and compare it using the stored procedure to find specific information and import it into another database. I was able to do this using the SQLDMO reference object.
Here are some clipits of what you need.
Imports SQLDMOPrivate myServer As New SQLServer
Dim serverName As String = System.Configuration.ConfigurationManager.AppSettings("Server").ToString()Dim userName As String = System.Configuration.ConfigurationManager.AppSettings("UserName").ToString()
Dim password As String = System.Configuration.ConfigurationManager.AppSettings("Password").ToString()
Dim storedProcedure As New StoredProcedure
Dim qresults As SQLDMO.QueryResults
Example Stored Procedure
Try
myServer.Connect(serverName, userName, password)
storedProcedure.Text = "IF EXISTS (SELECT * FROM sysobjects WHERE name='memb_proc' AND user_name(uid)='dbo') DROP PROCEDURE dbo.memb_proc"myServer.Databases.Item("<databasename>", "dbo").StoredProcedures.Add(storedProcedure)
storedProcedure.Text = "CREATE PROCEDURE dbo.memb_proc @lastname varchar(50) = '', @firstname varchar(50) = '', @zip varchar(5) = '', @membrowno varchar(50) OUTPUT AS Select @membrowno = rowno from memb where lastname LIKE @lastname and name LIKE @firstname and zip1 LIKE @zip "myServer.Databases.Item("<databasename>", "dbo").StoredProcedures.Add(storedProcedure)
Label1.Text = "Creation of stored procedure successful"Catch ex As Exception
Label1.Text = "Creation of stored procedure failed"
Finally
myServer.DisConnect()End Try
Run Stored Procedure and Obtain Results
myServer.Connect(serverName, userName, password)
qresults = myServer.ExecuteWithResults("USE [databasename] DECLARE @return_value int,@membrowno varchar(50) EXEC @return_value = [dbo].[memb_proc] @lastname = N'" & Last & "', @firstname = N'" & First & "',@zip = N'" & ZIP & "', @membrowno = @membrowno OUTPUT SELECT @membrowno as N'@membrowno'")For num = 1 To qresults.Rows
MemberRowNo = qresults.GetColumnString(num, 1)
Next
myServer.DisConnect()

I have some code that I need to run every quarter. I have many that are similar to this one so I wanted to input two parameters rather than searching and replacing the values. I have another stored procedure that's executed from this one that I will also parameter-ize. The problem I'm having is in embedding a parameter in the name of the called procedure (exec statement at the end of the code). I tried it as I'm showing and it errored. I tried googling but I couldn't find anything related to this. Maybe I just don't have the right keywords. what is the syntax?

@YYYYQQ char(8)
AS
begin
SET NOCOUNT ON;
select [provider group],provider, NPI, [01-Total Patients with DM], [02-Total DM Patients with LDL],

Consider a situation where a stored procedure taking a varbinary(max) (BLOB) input parameter then calls a nested stored procedure and passes along that varbinary(max) as an input parameter to the nested stored procedure.
Is a copy of the BLOB provided to the nested stored procedure (passed by value) OR is the BLOB passed by reference.
My interest is in understanding the potential memory hit when handling large BLOBs in this environment.
For example, if the BLOB is 200MB, will SQL server need to allocate memory for a new copy each time it's passed to another stored procedure?
Looks like table type parameters are passed by reference, but I haven't been able to find any info on BLOBS in this context.

How can I grant permissions to a login to execute msdb.dbo.sp_update_schedule()? Or is there a way I can impersonate the sysadmin user for the call by using Execute As sysadmin some how?

Has anyone encountered cases in which a proc executed by DTS has the following behavior:
1) underperforms the same proc when executed in DTS as opposed to SQL Server Managemet Studio
2) underperforms an ad-hoc version of the same query (UPDATE) executed in SQL Server Managemet Studio
What could explain this?
Obviously,
All three scenarios are executed against the same database and hit the exact same tables and indices.
Query plans show that one step, a Clustered Index Seek, consumes most of the resources (57%) and for that the estimated rows = 1 and actual rows is 10 of 1000's time higher. (~ 23000).
The DTS execution effectively never finishes even after many hours (10+)
The Stored procedure execution will finish in 6 minutes (executed after the update ad-hoc query)
The Update ad-hoc query will finish in 2 minutes

Hi all--I used the following type of script to migrate tables, views and stored procedures from 'dbo' to 'hqmsuser':
alter authorization on dbo.PK_T_PQ_MASTER to HQMSUSER
alter schema HQMSUSER transfer dbo.PK_T_PQ_MASTER
go
This was per recommendations from the BOL to use instead of the 'sp_changeobjectowner' procedure. I returned the following error:

Cannot change owner for an object that is owned by a parent object. Change the owner of the parent object instead.

current database schema is not compatible with this version. You may
need to either install a compatible schema with aspnet_regsql.exe

provider to a newer version.I heard something about running aspnet_regsql.exe, but I dont have that access to the DB. Also I dont know if this command does anything more than creating the membership tables and filling it with some default data...Any other solutions/thought on what this can be?Thanks!
