Strip Text From A String
Feb 17, 2004
I'm trying to find a way to strip text from a string. In the past (pre SQL Server) I would've used
LName: Left(NCBH!Name,InStr(1,NCBH!NAME,",",1)-1)
To strip the last name from a string like
Franks,George J
Apparently InStr is not a recognized function in SQL Server 2000. Or is it available but not in a view?
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I have a column of 5 comma-separated-value strings:
stringA, stringB, stringC, stringD, stringE
The strings are GUID's with the hyphen stripped and made all uppercase so they are completely random. I need to be able to remove any one of the strings including the comma, in a stored procedure and I am not sure how to accomplish this.
SELECT tickets
FROM users
WHERE CONTAINS (tickets, @ticket)
IF @@rowcount > 0
REMOVE STUFF HERE
SET @valid = 1
ELSE
SET @valid = 0
So if stringB gets passed in as @ticket then the new value in the column would be :
stringA, stringC, stringD, stringE
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thank you

I am trying to do string scrubbing in a sql clr function, including removing certain HTML formatting. I would like to use HtmlDecode method, but it's my understanding that System.Web is not available for Sql Clr (without marking code unsafe - not an option for me as this is for an application we sell externally, and unsafe calls woudl not go over well with customers). Is there any class that IS supported for Sql Clr that exposes this functionality? Thanks.

I am looking for the fastest way to strip non-numeric characters from a string.
I have a user database that has a column (USER_TELNO) in which the user can drop a telephone number (for example '+31 (0)12-123 456'). An extra computed column (FORMATTED_TELNO) should contain the formatted telephone number (31012123456 in the example)
Note: the column FORMATTED_TELNO must be indexed, so the UDF in the computed column has WITH SCHEMABINDING.... I think this implicates that a CLR call won't work....

correct query that will fetch only state names and not the numbers.

I have a text field which has entries of variable length of the form:
"house:app.apx&resultid=1234,clientip"
or
"tost:app.apx&resultid=123,clientip"
or
"airplane:app.apx&resultid=123489,clientip"
I'm trying to pick out the numbers between resultid='...',clientip no matter what the rest of the string looks like. So in this example it would be the numbers:
1234
123
12389
the part of the string of the form resultid='...',clientip always stays the same except the length of the number can vary.

Hi SQL Gurus,
I have an XML question to which I am kind of new.
I have an XML string that I get by using a query similar to the following....
SELECT 1 AS Tag,
NULL AS Parent,
NULL AS [Zip_ROOT!1!],
NULL AS [Zip!2!Value!element],
NULL AS [Zip!2!State!element]
FROM ZipCodes
UNION
SELECT 2,
1,
NULL,
Zip,
State
FROM ZipCodes where id < 3
FOR XML EXPLICIT
This returns an XML string, which is very long. I need to take this string and INSERT/UPDATE to a Text column in a table.
Any kind of help in this regard will be grately appreciated.
Regards,
Varma

I am not very familiar with MS SQL, and I need to know how to search a table for a string. I know the column that it is in, but I don't know which record. I am looking for a small piece of text in a much larger text field (we are talkinga maybe a 10k char field and I am only looking for about a 15 char string).
How do I do this with a MSSQL query?
Thanks a bunch
Nevermind, i found PATINDEX(). That worked great.

TEXT 1: 'ABNAGENDRACSURENDRADJITHENDRAXNARENDRABVEERNDARAXDRMNDRAXRVINDRABNAGENDRACSURENDRADJITHEN'
From the above text1, I want to get “AXNARENDR”.
Based on logic defined below:
First I have to search for string “A” Then next to ‘A’ it should not be “B” or “C” or “D”.It can be anything other thing these three.Combination of “A” otherthan “B” or “C” or “D”
In the example text I defined “A”,”X” defined three times .I want to capture few characters from the first occurrence of the string
i.e AXNARENDR (TEXT1 I defined “A” with 4th occur
TEXT 2:
'ABNAGENDRACSURENDRADJITHENDRABNAGENDRACSURENDRADJITHENABNAGENDRACSURENDRADJITHENABN

Hello all,
New to the forums here. I'm not a beginner with SQL, but nor am I a SQL developer - network engineer who knows some scripting and the fundamentals of DB design/administration. There's the background.
I have a database of client information where a date is keyed in and stored as text. Because this is entered by end-users, the way it's entered varies - 1/1/2001, 01/01/2001, etc. Most use "1/1/2001" (note the date is not the same for each record)
I have 4,000 records to update and I need to try to convert the text string to the correct date - changing 1/1/2005 to the same date in proper date/time format. My database uses datetime as an integer calculating the number of days from 12/30/1800. Today's date would be 75508. Time is separated into different fields.
I can do the work to update the text to a single format to make the conversion easier, but I am having trouble locating the proper way to write a convert function to do this. I've searched online (which is how I came here) and have searched the forums without luck.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

I get 24/36/48.
My select query:
SELECT CONVERT (varchar(10), quantity) + '/' FROM flexing_stock_transactions WHERE item = 'CH' AND week = 35 GROUP BY quantity ORDER BY quantity
returns
24/
36/
48/
How can I achieve my goal please?

I was wondering if someone could tell me how to use an SQL Function to remove everything from the mess of characters below except 'Test.' Really, any message could be substituted, so it's not as easy to leave everything except the 'Test.' string.
{
tf1ansiansicpg1252deff0deflang1033{fonttbl{f0fnilfcharset0 MS Shell Dlg 2;}{f1fnil MS Shell Dlg 2;}}
{colortbl ;
ed0green0lue0;}
{*generator Msftedit 5.41.15.1507;}viewkind4uc1pard x720cf1f0fs20 Test.f1par
}
It's RichText.
The fs20 could be fs24, fs25, etc. (any numbers). The end of the number would be the point to trim the beginning off.
The '' seems like it would be the point to start trimming the end off.
I've been experimenting with SUBSTRING together with CHARINDEX, but am just not getting even close to coming up with a solution.
Any help would be greatly appreciated
Thank you.

Can anyone tell me how I can strip certain chahrcters from a string
I know I can use replace, but i don't think this is appropriate for what I want to do
For example I have the string
declare @text varchar (100)
select @text = 'word1, word2 & word3'
if i do a replace on the string like this
select @text = 'replace(@text, ',', '')
select @text = 'replace(@text, '&', '')
I end up with the string
select @text = 'word1 word2 word3'
i.e. 2 spaces between word2 and word3
What i want the string to look like is :
select @text = 'word1 word2 word3'
Is there a way i can check for more than one space + characters ( / , &) in one go
many thanks

I thought I would post this solution. I searched a long time and didnt see anything about how to solve my problem. After avoiding this and simply building strings I decided to dig in my heels and try and figure this out. Well, maybe I am just slow. :) Anyhow, here is some code that should help a lot of folks with this question...
Function GetProductCategories(ByVal departmentID) As DataSet
'set the connection string (comes from a property in this case)
Dim connection As SqlConnection = New SqlConnection(ConfigurationSettings.AppSettings("ConnectionStringWeb"))
'set the sql text string notice the @DepartmentID is my parameter. protected from sql injections
Dim strSQL As String = "SELECT * FROM ProductCategory WHERE DepartmentID = @DepartmentID"
'set new command object to strsql and the connection. required
Dim command As New SqlCommand(strSQL, connection)
'set parameters to pass to through with the strsql. required for parameters. you can take this a set further. See commented fields below.
command.Parameters.Add(New SqlParameter("@DepartmentID", departmentID))
'additional set up for parameters if you like...
'command.Parameters.Add("@departmentID", SqlDbType.Int, 4)
'command.Parameters("@departmentID").Value = departmentID
'set SQLDataAdapter to your previously created command object
'this enables your adapter access to your strSQL, connection and parameters
Dim da As New SqlDataAdapter(command)
'set proper name of table for data set based upon departmentID
If departmentID = 1 Then
Dim ds As New DataSet()
da.Fill(ds, "dtCarriers")
Return ds
End If
'set proper name of table for data set based upon departmentID
If departmentID = 2 Then
Dim ds As New DataSet()
da.Fill(ds, "dtProducts")
Return ds
End If
End Function

I'm creating a web-based NT RAS report site and am looking for the most efficient way to import the data from NT Event log into SQL2k. I'm using the 'dumpel' utility from rsc kit and all is fine except the 10th column - the message detail:
"The user DOMAINuserid connected on port Mdm15 on 08/23/2002 at 07:25am and disconnected on 08/23/2002 at 07:27am. The user was active for 2 minutes 23 seconds. 78809 bytes were sent and 50675 bytes were received. The port speed was 49300."
I need to parse this one long text string into 6 distinct columns: userID, port, duration, bytes_xmt, bytes_rcv and portspeed. After a quick review of the rowsets, the strings seem to hold a consistent output ... no real variances I can see.
I've dablled with views but am facing a small performance issue that could get bigger: The sql server not only has to run the text file import package, but also the view to format the text dump into a workable dataset, then my report code bangs over 30 queries against the final dataset. It already takes our SQL2k server over 3 minutes to parse about 20,000 rows and the server's a beast (dual 1.8 p4 cpu, 3gb ram, raid, etc).
What I think would work best is to abandon the view (performance will only get worse as the row count increases) and instead INSERT the rows into one table.
Any ideas anyone? any good scripts out there that can help me to parse the long text string quicker that using substring and replace functions?
TIA:rolleyes: :rolleyes:

Daily, I have to map thoursands of items into its correct category. What I have to do is Filter item by the ClSID and SCLISD, then look into the Label for where the item should be. For example from the attachment,
CLSID = 1 and SCLSID = 23 - if in the label has the keyword "notebook", its NEW_CAT should be 14 and its NEW_CATNAME is LAPTOPS;
CLSID = 1 and SCLSID = 23 - if in the Label contains Tablet PC, its NEW_CAT name should be 2474 and its NEW_CATNAME is PC LAPTOPS.
CLSID = 3 and SCLSID = 54 - if in the Label contains Watch, its NEW_CAT name should be A6052 and its New_CATNAME is SMART WATCH.
Basically, the work flow is looking into the CLSID, then SCLSID,then, Label and then assign a correct NEW_CAT and NEW_CATNAME of the item.
I have written a code but I can't get it look into specific CLSID and SCLSID.
For example, i have when upper(Label) like upper ('%Tablet%PC%') then '2474 PC Laptops'
I couldn't attach either the file or image.
