I am in the middle of a major migraton project, moving from x86 SQL 2000 to IA64 SQL 2005. I have a business need to link to several legacy servers. I have a number of problems I am trying to solve.
1) Linking a Kerberos server to a non-Kerberos server. 2) Linking x64 or IA64 servers to x86 servers. 3) Linking SQL 2005 to SQL 2000.
Two of the errors I am encountering are: ------------------------------ TCP Provider: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host. Login failed for user '(null)'. Reason: Not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection. OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "SCDC250DB" returned message "Communication link failure". (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 10054) ------------------------------ And ------------------------------ The OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for the linked server "SCDC250DB" reported an error. Authentication failed. Cannot initialize the data source object of OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "SCDC250DB". OLE DB provider "SQLCLI" for linked server "SCDC250DB" returned message "Invalid authorization specification". (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 7399)
If someone has worked through these problems before, I would appreciate it if you could direct me to the relevant documentation to resolve these issues.
Thanks!

Hi, can anyone point me in the right direction of how to sync an in-house SQL Server 7 with a remote SQL server 7.
We are a development house. We build website using SQL server 7 databases then move them up to an entirely different SQL server 7 database in a remote location.
Now, please don't laugh, currently we export all the data from the development server into a csv and import it back into the live server. As you can imagine, it's clunky, time consuming and unreliable.
Is there a way to automatically sync the two? I tried desperately to find any information but even the MicroSoft MCSE training manual on SQL doesn't say how to do this.
Just wondering before I do it, I am in the UK and studying for an mcdba which i require sql server 2000 on my laptop but I'm also doing the sql server 2005 exams aswell at the same time,
Now I know that you can have multiple instances on sql server on one machine but would I be able to have 2000 and 2005 running on the same machine or would it not be advisable
Thanks

These are the steps i plan on taking. 1. sp_help_revlogin gets logins sql 2000 2. Backup from SQL 2000 to SQL 205 3. Change database to 90 mode 4. Change database to check sum and auto stats sync 5. Rebuild Indexes on databases 6. Jobs (i will manually move over) Anything else i should run after the rebuilds
I have created linked server object between a sql 2000 and sql 2005 database. i have the latest mdacs installed and all the services enabled on both sides. But when i try and run a sql statement on the sql 2000 side i get this error: [DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen (PreLoginHandshake()).]General network error. Check your network documentation. If i try and run a swl statment on the sql server 2005 side the procedure works. Has anyone experienced the same problem?Any advice?
We have two sql servers using Windows authentication. One is sql 2000 the other sql 2005. When logged in as "sa", I can link these servers and run a SELECT distributed query without any problem.
But when one of our developers runs the same query (he is "dbo" of each database on each of the servers) he gets the error:
"OLE DB Provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server <Servername> returned message "Communication Link Failure" ... Login failed for user '(null'). reason: Not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection"
Despite that, I, as "sa" equivalent, have no problem so it appears to be a permisisons issue. Any ideas what is going on here?

I was wondering whether it is possible to query linked servers in SQL Server Management Studio Express 2005 if those servers linked to are SQL Server 2000 machines?
I have added some linked servers to express and queried them, however the login timeout is expiring. I thought it might be because of an incompatability.
I know this is an easy one for most of you but this is new territory for me. I am trying to link a production application database to an existing SMS database. Both of these databases are SQL 2000. I have sa access to both of them. I have an accreditation application that deals with internal processes within our active directory network. We are using SMS database collections to provide the discovery for reporting of this application database and I want to compare the collection to the existing data between the 2 databases.
For simplicity I will define them both. Application Database we will call €œA-Database€? SMS Database we will call €œB-Database€?
I have gone into the A-Database and gone to linked Servers under the security node in enterprise manager. I created a new linked database and selected the SQL Server option in the general Tab. In the Security Tab I selected the €œBe made using the security context€? and used €œsa€? for the Remote login and the CORRECT sa password for the With password option. The server options tab remain the same with €?RPC, RPC Out, & Use Remote Collation€? selected.
It appears to connect but there is not any Table or Views showing up. What am I doing wrong here and what do I need to do to link these 2 database engines so I can move forward?
Hi, I am trying to edit some data from a SQL2000-datasource in ASP.NET 2.0 and have a problem with a column that has bit-data and is used for selection. SQL2005 works fine when declaring <SelectParameters> <asp:Parameter DefaultValue="TRUE" Name="APL" Type="boolean" /> </SelectParameters>When running this code with SQL2000, there are no error-msgs, but after editing a record the "APL"-column looses its value of 1 and is set to 0. Looks like an issue with type-conversion, we've hit incompatibilities between SQL200 and 2005 with bit/boolean several times before. So, how is this done correctly with SQL2000? (I've tried setting the Type to "int16" -> err. Also setting Defval="1" gave an err) ThanksMichael
I've installed development server and created the databases, and restore the ddatabase from backups of production server, There the users in the databases which are not in sysxlogins in master, Please guide me how I can synchronise the logins? Can I bcp out sysxlogins from development and then bcp in in development server? Is there any way there even groups in the database and do I have to corncern about any other tables in master db
I'm looking to gather ideas on this before I start the project; so what better way to start than to ask here? ;)
The situation is this: we are in the process of replacing a large data driven application with a new one. Before turning the old'un off (that's not for a minimum of 6 months), we need to migrate data between the two entirely different schemas, and I've been tasked with writing the interfaces.
Now, here comes the kicker; they don't just want a "straight-forward data conversion", they want to run a period where they can still update both databases and any changes in the old one are to be pushed into the new db.
Because the schemas are not the same, I believe replication is out of the question so I was looking for advice as to what possibilies I have ahead of me to achieve this.
I fear I may not have expained this well enough; so as always if there are holes in the detail let me know and I'll do my best to fill them in :)
HiWe have an internal ms access database which we need to synchronise with ourwebsite with sql server 2005 backend which is hosted on a public host. Myquestion is; is there a way to keep the two databases synchronised using thetechnologies built in sql server 2005 and/or access? We also have thepossibility of an in-house sql server 2000. Can this be used in anyway tohelp, perhaps by moving data from in house access to in house sql server2000 and then synching sql server 2000 and remote sql server 2005?ThanksRegards
I'm stumped. Is there a way to get a compact edition client (running on a standard PC) to automatically sync. (using merge replication) with a server on a schedule?
I can quite happily pull up SQL Managerment Studio and sync. on the client, but I want to have something running in the background basically doing this for me (again, on the client). I know I can do it in code, but we've not yet received our Visual Studio package, so for the moment, I want something already written to do it for me.
I have a problem synching my xda mini s with my pc using vista. A previous thread was unhelpfully closed by Ilya as being off topic; well it isn't on topic anywhere else. At least not according to microsoft's own search engine. Ilya, why not try giving a helpful answer instead of 'not my problem'? My xda will not synch using vista; XP and ActivSync has been perfect. I've tried installing mobile device centre version 6.1 but I suspect vista isn't compatible with Windows mobile version 5.1. Should it be? If not, is there a patch or is upgrading to vista going to cost another couple of hundred pounds to get a compatible mobile device? If so, I'm off to a different operating system. Perhaps, like many others, back to XP and let Microsoft continue to dither around and experiment on others.
I have SSMSexpress which does not include the Tasks/Import Data...Is there an easy way to do this without the full SSMS?I have SQL Server 2005 express for developement which I like alot. Can I possibly load SSMS without installing the entire SQL Server 2005 product? PS I am almost a complete idiot with SQL Server DBs and I use Visual Basic, not C# thanksMilton
Hi Everybody, does anyone know how I can migrate SQL 2000 data to SQL 2005 database? I'm trying to create an application that will connect to SQL 2000 database using VS2003 and transfer data to SQL2005 database but it doesn't seem to work. Any suggestion is greatly appriciated. devmetz.
I am trying to copy a database from sql2000 to sql2005 but it is giving me the following error: To connect to this server you must use SQL Server Management studio or SQL server management objects (SMO)
and it seems really straight forward. does this tutorial cover everything i need to do for data migration? do i need to watch out for anything? if anyone knows of a better tutorial please let me know. thanks for the help.
Hi all. I'll say from the get go that I'm no SQL guru. I'm primarily a web dev who has been given the data jobs kind of by default so I'm definitely no DBA.
Anyway, having established my noobness, I have encountered an issue. The employer recently decided to upgrade our databases from 2000 to 2005 and I have been tasked to migrate the data from old to new. I have discovered the Import/Export Wizard and got it to move all the data in a dev database we use...but there was one problem. It seems that the tables in 2000 that had columns designated as identity columns do not have the identity attribute when they arrive in 2005.
I haven't figured a way to alter them to give them that attribute once they're in 2005 so I'm wondering if there's something I can do/change in the import process that would retain the identity property of the columns if I were to re-import them.
This is my first migration attempt so dumping it and starting over is no great loss...but any help would be most appreciated.
Hi, I am trying to transfer data from a sql server 2000 database to a Sql Server 2005 database... and i just want to transfer around 2 tables.. and my sql server 2000 database is located in one machine and the 2005 database is located in the other machine.. So i am trying to insert data into the sql server 2005 database. So can i do it like this.. Insert into SqlServer2005comp.Databasename..TableName ( Columns ) Select Columns From sqlserver2000comp.Databasename..tablenames Where UserId = @UserId. Is this the right way to do it.. and can i give this query in the sqlserver2005 db or the 2000 db any help or ideas will be appreciated. Regards... Karen
Hi All! i have a database in SQLEXPRESS 2005 but i need to this Database in SQL 2000...there is any way to move data from sqlexpress 2005 to sql 2000.... please help me.....
We need to upgrade our HR system from SQL 2000 to SQL 2005. Support for SQL 2000 ends 12/31/2007.
We have a third party vender that do not currently support SQL 2005. Employee's data is transfered from our HR database to the third party database for the purpose of yearly performance evaluation on a daily basis.
Both databases are currenlty on a SQL 2000 server.
Can data be transferred from a SQL 2005 database to a SQL 2000 database?
I have a large (huge) database that I want to copy onto my new slq 2005 test server. I'm leaning toward detaching the data on my 2000 box, duplicating it, copying it to my new 2005 machine, and attaching it. Is it possible that it could be that simple? If not, how is it done? Thanks a bunch for any help or pointers to the articles I was totally unable to find on the subject.
