I have SQLServer20000 Enterprise Manager-Version 8.00 and Microsoft Enterprise Manager - V 2.0 Version 5.1 Service Pack 1 and SQL 8.00.760. A "user" owns the database and when I have the user logged to SQL Query Analyzer ( with user and pwd)
When enable Fixed server role as system administrator for that user (owns db)
select * from table1 says that the table does not exist
select * from "owner".table1 gives the records.
When enable fixed server role as security administrator for that user ( owns db)
select * from table1 outputs records
select * from owner.table1 outputs records.
If I have both system administrator and security administrator checked for the user the scenario is like "system administrator" where select statement outputs records only if owner is included in the statement.
When system administrator is the highest role why does it behave this way?
Any help is appreciated.

Why Would System Admin Privileges Be Required To Connect To A Default Instance?
Apr 25, 2007I have a server with 3 SQL Server named instances on it - servername, servername/TST and servername/GOLDSTD. I have several databases on the default instance (servername) but users cannot access the databases unless they are given system admin privileges to their login. This occurs using both SQL Server Logins and Windows authentication logins. If I move the database to a different named instance (servername/TST), the problem no longer exists and users can connect with dbo privileges. Any suggestions or is this typical for default instances? Thanks in advance for any help

SQL Server Admin 2014 :: System Objects Could Not Be Updated In Database X Because It Is Read-only
Jul 27, 2015We installed SP1 for SQL Server 2014 this past weekend and got this error message in the logs. I found that if you set the db to read-write, it updates the system objects, even after SP1 has completed. Then you can set it back to read-only. I'm just posting this so other people can find it on the internet, as I wasn't able to find it specifically.
Error Log Entry:System objects could not be updated in database 'x' because it is read-only.
Problem: After installing SP1 for SQL Server 2014 you will find this message in the error logs saying read-only databases could not be updated.
Solution: Simply set the db to read-write and the system objects will get updated, long after SP1 was installed.
ALTER DATABASE [x] SET READ_WRITE WITH NO_WAIT
Then set it back to read-only:
ALTER DATABASE [x] SET READ_ONLY WITH NO_WAIT
You should then see these log entries:
System objects could not be updated in database 'x' because it is read-only.
Setting database option READ_WRITE to ON for database 'x'.
Starting up database 'x'.
CHECKDB for database 'x' finished without errors on 2015-07-25 01:02:28.143 (local time). This is an informational message only; no user action is required.

Jan 17, 2008I am developing a web site with asp.net 2.0 and c#, using Visual Studio 2005 and Microsoft SQL Server 2005 ( I am still learning about these technologies and languages ).
I transferred my web site files to my NEW computer.
The web site worked fine when running inside Visual Studio, however when I tried to run it in its PUBLISHED format it was giving this error message:

I solved the problem by running SQL Server Management Stdio, right clicking “SiteData� database -> properties -> permissions->view server permissions then I chose “CENTAURUSASPNET� and since I DID NOT KNOW what grants are ESSENTIAL for the functioning of the database, I GRANTED EVERYTHING ( I ticked ALL the permissions).
But since, probably, a lot of GRANTS are not only unnecessary but also may compromise the security of the web site, I would like to know what are the ESSENTIAL OR MINIMUM GRANTS NECESSARY for making the database functional to the web site and what GRANTS may compromise security.

I€™m not getting any error messages. Permission changes just don€™t take effect. Although, there are few objects, which already have permissions granted and I'm able to change permissions for these ones.

SQL Server Admin 2014 :: Does Security-admin Role Plus Deny Alter Any Login Cancel Each Other Out
Aug 27, 2015I want to set up a database role so that users can use sp_readerrorlog through SSMS. It does a check on membership in the securityadmin role.
I have tested it and can see you can grant execute on xp_readerrorlog but the SSMS GUI uses sp_readerrorlog.
I thought I could create a user/certificate and add the signature to sp_readerrorlog but it's not permitted (likely because it's not a normal database object).
So the other solution is to add the users to the securityadmin role but then explicitly deny alter any login (best done with a custom server role in 2012+ but otherwise just manually in 2008). I tested this out and it works, I'm not able to alter any logins or increase my own permissions, I also did a check of what's reported from fn_my_permissions(null, null) and it shows minimal permissions like I'd expect.

Apr 3, 2007Ok guys, I am trying to install Sql server 2005 on Vista but I am still stuck with this warning message in the System Configuration Check during Sql server 2K5 installation :

Now, I know I need to install SP2 but how the hell I am going to install SP2 if Sql server 2005 doesn't install any of the components including Sql server Database services, Analysus services, Reporting integration services( only the workstation component is available for installation)?
Any work around for this issue?
P.S.: I didn't install VS.NET 2005 yet, can this solve the problem?

Jul 20, 2005Hi,I have a few things on my databases which seem to be neither true systemobjects or user objects - notably a table called 'dtproperties' (createdby Enterprise manager as I understand, relating to relationship graphingor something) and some stored procs begining with "dt_" (some kind ofsource control stuff, possible visual studio related). These show up whenI use"exec sp_help 'databaseName'"but not in Ent. Mgr. or in Query Analyzer's object browser, and also notin a third party tool I use called AdeptSQL. I am wondering how thosetools know to differentiate between these types of quasi-system objects,and my real user data. (This is for the purpose of a customized schemagenerator I am writing). It has always been my impression that to have admin access to SQL that you had to at least had admin level access on the server.
