sorry if this is a dumb question. i've tried several searches here and on the net, but no joy.
i'm comfortable with my Access/mySQL/innodb setup, but now i have a one-off project to move a back-end database to an existing MSSQL machine. i have not touched MSSQL life-to-date.
admin will set up my instance, and then what?
how do i get to create my tables and relationships etc...
i hope it's not a bunch of CREATE TABLE command lines!
for mySQL i use dbdesigner-4 which is a joy!
is there some equivalent GUI for MSSQL table design? ...where?
my prototype tables are currently in Access but they will certainly need modification for MSSQL use.
I wrote my own VB app to maintain all of my connection strings and link them to packages. I then grab them at run time and set them as variables in memory.
How do I tranfer a previous table and its data to the ASPNETDB.MDF in the Web Site Administration tool. I've tried right, but I can't locate the database in the SQL server on my server. help please.
My ASP.Net app is multilingual and all my translations are stored in seperate MSDE tables, for example, tblEN for English, tblES for Spanish and tblTH for Thai.
When I send the installation files to my clients, I get them to double click on 4 MS DOS batch files that use OSQL to run 4 scripts.....
1. DataBase&Tables.sql - creates the database and tables 2. Logins&Users.sql 3. StoredProcedures.sql 4. Permissions.sql
This worked great before my language table came along to spoil the party and I now need some way of getting the data stored in the language on my server into the table on the client.
If I export the data to a text file and then send it out with the rest of the installation files - what are my options for transferring the data into the table ?
Hi all, What I'm trying to do and having a lot of trouble with is pulling how one user is related to another user from my database. I'll explain...
I set up a table called relationships that looks like this:
ID type: int
RELID1 type: int, is the user id that initiated the relationship request.
RELID2 type: int, is the user id of the second person in the relationship.
Story type: varchar(255), quick blerb on how they are related.
Type type: int, a number 1-20 based on the relationship they have
Status type: int, 1 = confirmed by second person, 0 = not confirmed
What i'd like to have pulled is a list of the people that person (for example: 70) is related to. I am having the two following problems: 1. unqid of "70" could be in RELID1 or RELID2 as they could have initiated the request or been the second person. 2. I don't want to display them selves in their own relationship listing
Example Data: ID 1 2 3 4
RELID1 25 15 70 12
RELID2 54 70 13 8
Story Met on the east coast Met at walmart Met walking Met outside
Type 14 11 3 8
Status 1 1 1 1
Example Output: Again assuming the current user is "70", the sql should pull: 15, 13.. but i'd like to pull their names from another table called "Users" where "15" and "13" are the UnqID's in a column called "ID". So: 15 = Bob Smith 13 = Jane Doe
The following code works great that I got with the help on another form:
SELECT Relationship.RELID1 , Relationship.RELID2 , ReMembers.FirstName , ReMembers.LastName FROM Relationship INNER JOIN ReMembers ON ReMembers.AccountID = Relationship.RELID1 WHERE Relationship.RELID2 = 70 UNION ALL SELECT Relationship.RELID1 , Relationship.RELID2 , ReMembers.FirstName , ReMembers.LastName FROM Relationship INNER JOIN ReMembers ON ReMembers.AccountID = Relationship.RELID2 WHERE Relationship.RELID2 = 70
My question is: What is the best way to set this table up? I'm not committed to any any design as of right now, but want to be sure I set it up in the most efficient manner.
I am fairly new to SQL Server 2005 and before now, I have only had to restore databases, and connect to tables via ODBC connection in a reference (read only) setup. Today, I have a very small project to set up using the server.
I have a userlogon.csv file that the network stores on a file server in a hidden share logon$. It has 4 columns, UserID, Computer, Date, Time.
I was able to create a database called UserLogon and import the file as it was today. I want to create a scheduled update so the server would go to this file perhaps 4 times a day (or more) and grab any new logins that have appended itself to this CSV file.
So, as a newbie with a 1,900 page SQL Server 2005 unleashed manual at my side, could someone outline what the steps are in general I should follow to set this up?
I have the process laid out in my mind, but I don't know how to translate in into a scheduled task of the SQL Server :
1. Create DB and import the table (done) 2. create a stored procedure that connects to the CSV file and evaluates date and time stamps then appends any new records into the SQL db table. (appending records would be achieved by using the INSERT and WHERE statements?) 3. Schedule a job to perform this task on a routine basis.
It appears that the file connection portion of this set up is defined outside the evaluation and append record procedure? (not in the same stored procedure). Perhaps I tie the whole process together using the Job Manager, selecting the file settings, and then the stored procedure to be performed on the file.?
I hope I have been descriptive enough to ask if someone could outline the modules/features/processes involved so I can read up on them and figure them out using the book.
Does anyone know how to setup the "table details" to take up all the space in a page (extend the boarder to the end of the page) even there is only one record in the table details?
Normally, for example, if you got a table in a report, if the table has only one record, the boarder of table will only take up maybe 1/4 of the page space (header, 1 line details, footer). if the table has 5 records, it may take up half of the page, but the boarder of table neven extend to the end of the report and i wwant it happen!!!!!!! Thank you.
We setup a new Shared SQL server 2014 Web and transferred all SQL databases over. However when customers connect via SQL Management Studio they now get VIEW STATE error when right clicking on any table on any database.
I have XP Pro SP2 with MDAC 2.8.1022. It had a problem so I tried to reinstall MDAC and got a Fatal Setup Error. This setup does not support installing on this operating system. I downloaded MDAC 2.8 1177 and get the same error.
I thought of uninstalling/reinstalling SP2, but this is a 2 month old Dell Latitude 610 with factory installed XP. There is no Windows Service Pack 2 option listed in the Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs.
There's some other strange things, so I wonder if they are related.
1) I have Paul set up as an administrator account. Some folders like MSSQL show that account with no permissions. I grant all the permissions to Paul for that folder. I come back later and the permissions are gone.
2) I deleted 20 files in Explorer, but 7 of them did not go away. I deleted those 7 again and they instatnly reappeared. I deleted those 7 again and then they finally went away.
3) I get a slow reaction time for things like Windows Explorer and opening and closing programs. This is suprising since it has 2 gig of RAM and 2.3 Gig processor. Could it be a memory handling problem that's causing OS problems. Probably, the memory didn't handle the OS installation well and the whole system is compromised now.
We're doing upgrades from SQL 2008 R2 to SQL 2014. This is blocked due to RS is installed but not configured. Our desired action is to uninstall RS and proceed with the upgrade. But when setuparp.exe is raised, it does not list all the features on the 'Select Features' page. In fact, it only lists the last 2 shared features (SQ Client Connectivity SDK and Microsoft Sync Framework). However, all items appear to be listed on the 'Select Instance' page including RS. I've seen this issue on 2 of our SQL 2008 R2 Servers already.
Hi all.I'm looking for a tool which should act like some kind of middleware/logical layer bewtween the SQL server and the webbased user interface.- It should be possible to easily create simple web forms (only datainput and output) without programming effort by "clicking" the fieldsand their order on the web mask within an admnistrative interface.- It should also be bossible to add "new fields" to the database, including field type, permissions, value lists etc. (excluding anybusiness logic) without programming effort by administration.I know, that most workflow tools or "Trouble Ticket Tools", based ondatabases have this feature to easily configure new masks and add newfields to the database, but i need it as an tool-unspecific layer forthe MS SQL Server.Thank you very much for your feedback, any ideas are welcome!Best regards, Heiko.
I'm trying to install SQL Server Management studio 2012 on my Windows 7 (x64) standalone laptop. When I click "New SQL stand-alone installation..." it runs a Setup Support Rules check and always fails "Setup Account Privileges". I've looked into the error and I keep getting that I need to change security rules but I don't have that option in window 7. How do I get around this without having to resort to a computer running Windows Server?
I have Visual Studio 2013 premium installed along with Localdb v11. I just want to connect and manage my database engine through SSMS when developing any application.
This forum is intended for users who are new to SQL Server, and have basic usage questions. If you have setup or installation issues or questions, you should check out the Setup forum.
I know there's an option in the SSMS to remove the hook at the option "Prevent Saving changes that require table re-creation".
But how can I set the option silent. I mean for instance at the setup or by a secret T-SQL command or setting a value in a hidden file? I don't want the user to open the options dialog.
I logged the registry by a tool and alas there was it. So the thing is to set the registry entry by our own setup after installing the SSMS.

I am running a number of SQL instances on my PC. Within the network, I have think server with various System Center components. For compatibility reasons, some features of System Center 2012 R2 had to be delegated to different SQL databases. My question is, because there is now more than one IP address on my system, and each instance of SQL is assigned to its own IP, is there a way to setup DNS and SQL so the namespace points to the desired IP address? For Instance:
MSSQL2008 instance is set to run on = 11.12.13.1 MSSQL2012 is set to run on = 11.12.13.2 IN DNS: A Record: Mike-PC = 11.12.13.1 A Record: Mike-PC = 11.12.13.2
If I want to use MSSQL2008 by specifying Mike-PC as the DNS name, how would I do that with 100% accuracy? If there is another way to get the job done, I am more than willing to approach this differently.

Hello,I'm looking for recommendations for SQL tools used for comparing schemas from different databases. I would like the tool to be able to compare schemas for at least two databases and list the difference in tables, sps, functions, and view. Even if the both schemas contain the same structures I would like to know what differences exist. Also, I would like to be able to type in a table field name and get a list of every place in the db that field is referenced. On another note, how do others go about maintaining a version history of db structures? Any tools available for this functionality? Currently, I use visual source safe for my app. code. I could place copies of my SPs in visual source safe and edit them within visual studio. I'm not sure how I would easily get the edited version into my sql database without having to create a script or copy the edited version back to the db. Any thoughts?Any information is appreciated.Oscar
Hi guys, Im trying to use Bulk copy to transform a csv file into a table
BULK INSERT [BULK_INSERT_TEST] FROM 'c:stock.csv' WITH ( FIELDTERMINATOR = ',', ROWTERMINATOR = 'N'
)
--*STOCK LOOKS LIKE THIS stockcode, barcode, qty 10002,"10002087",0
TABLE Looks like this
id, stock,barcode, qty
can anyone give any guidance on performing this - at present this doesn't seem to work. Worth mentioning id is autoincrementing. I would also need to strip quotes around the second field. Note. Stock file has a header - do I need to strip this to use BCP?
There are 4 columns in total, however some rows have missing values for Column 4, and but given there are no field separators (all columns have fixed width and data is truncated if needed), how should the format be written to define a row terminator to apply to Column 3 if Column 4 is null.
I'm in the process of delivering a SQL Server BI solution to a customer. I have the cube built, SSIS working and an SSRS package with several hundred reports. They would like to roll their own reports.
I've looked at ProClarity (or whatever MS calls it now) and Report Builder. Both seem to have their pros and cons.
I think Service Broker is the right tool for what I want to do but need confirmation. Here is what I want to do.
Our company sells small business consulting services. When a client signs up with us, we put a server at their site that runs our app (using SQL Server 2005). Once the server is setup at their site and operational we constantly send certain information from that server to our central corporate server. There could be thousands of records every day being sent from each of these servers to our corporate server. We're using webservices now to transfer this data from each server but I'm afraid we're reaching a point where webservices will no longer work because of the volume of data.
1) I assume that Service Broker was created, in part at least, to address these types of situations?
2) If #1 is correct, is there any step by step examples/instruction that shows me how to use Service Broker to communicate between two SQL Server databases on two different servers?
Hi, I'm not sure this is the right place to ask this question (please re-direct me if it isn't). I would like to learn about SubSonic tool:1. do you recommend this tool ? if so what are its best uses?2. is its license allows me to work with it for free for commercial uses? any license limitations I should be aware of for using it as a tool? thanks,
Hi all, I downloaded the StudentActivities sample app from http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms345152.aspx When I want to go through this tutorial I encounter the following problem: Database 'C:WebSitesStudentActivitiesRegistryDataStudentActivities.mdf' cannot be upgraded because its non-release version (587) is not supported by this version of SQL Server. You cannot open a database that is incompatible with this version of sqlservr.exe. You must re-create the database.Could not open new database 'C:WebSitesStudentActivitiesRegistryDataStudentActivities.mdf'. CREATE DATABASE is aborted. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 950) So attaching the DB seems to doesn't work. The reason for this is probably that this sample app src was written in an older version of Visual WebDeveloper Express 2005 +SQL Server Express 2005. Therefore I would like if someone can provide me with the sql src of this StudentActivities database. Then I can create the database myself from this. Or is there some tool which canconvert a mdf to sql? I hope someone can help me with this. Thanks in advance. GJ

I have a typed dataset where I used the sql query builder to build the following: SELECT DealManager.*, Contact AS Expr1FROM DealManagerWHERE (Contact = @Contact) How can I incorporate the "where % % " clause into this statement and still except the required parameter. In other words, I want something like this: SELECT DealManager.*, Contact AS Expr1FROM DealManagerWHERE (Contact like %@Contact%) but I get an error when I compile this... Any help always appreciated!!!
Hi Guys Got this problem, ive setup some new roles and users through asp.net configuration and it creates ASPNETDB.MDF in the App_Data folder when ive got a DB in SQL server 2005 express. Basically how do i change it so the tables created for the users and roles are created in the SQL Server 2005 Db? p.s I'm very new to sql server 2005 Thanks
I've been having trouble getting this tool to work with my server/database. I'm using XP Pro, MSDE, .NET 1.1.4322 and IIS 5.1. IIS has been installed and tested with the help of others. .asp pages are being served locally and to another PC on the network. No obvious problem here. When I installed MSDE I used the SAPWD='strongpassword" command to create a password. I also built a new database. I had positive feedback on both of these actions.
Now to the tool - when I activate the administrator it pops with the little window saying Web Server Configuration. It lists the following options:
Desired Port: IIS Cassini Personal Web Server Restore Faults
and Start and Stop buttons.
If I leave the setting on IIS and click Start it opens a webpage entitled Web Data Administrator. Moving further down I have a welcome message and then the line -
Please enter a SQL Server name:
Username: [Desktopob shadowed entry] Password Server (local)
Authentication Method:
Windows Intergrated SQl Login
and then a Login button
If I select SQL Login and enter "sa" as the username and then my password leaving (local) as the server I get the following error:
Invalid username and/or password, you are using a windows login that is not your own, or server does not exist.
I have tried all combination of \desktopsa, sa, you name it. The password I selected is correct because I made a point of writing it down so I wouldn't forget it. I have also tried all the combos using Cassini as well.
This is where I'm stuck at this point. All suggestions are appreciated.
For management that doesn't have the software I do, I've been using a PDF postscript utility to print the model and give it to them. However, I have to fit the model for the specific page (which is really small, and you have to zoom in), or you have to view it on multiple pages. Well multiple pages can be a pain, because the table you are looking at is on page 1, but the relationships are on page 12, 22, or 50, for example. So I was looking for a tool that is cheap enough to implement that we could look at the entire model on one "surface" (not necessary to print), that the model could be viewed in.
