tables can exist SQL Server 2000? Also, is there a limit to the
number of local temp tables that can exist?

A Curious Error Message, Local Temp Vs. Global Temp Tables?!?!?

Looking at BOL for temp tables help, I discover that a local temp table (I want to only have life within my stored proc) SHOULD be visible to all (child) stored procs called by the papa stored proc.
However, the following code works just peachy when I use a GLOBAL temp table (i.e., ##MyTempTbl) but fails when I use a local temp table (i.e., #MyTempTable). Through trial and error, and careful weeding efforts, I know that the error I get on the local version is coming from the xp_sendmail call. The error I get is: ODBC error 208 (42S02) Invalid object name '#MyTempTbl'.
Here is the code that works:SET NOCOUNT ON

The only thing I change to make it fail is the table name, change it from ##MyTempTbl to #MyTempTbl, and it dashes the email hopes of the stored procedure upon the jagged rocks of electronic despair.
Any insight anyone? Or is BOL just full of...well..."stuff"?
Global Temp Tables

I am creating an sp, in which I check for the existence of a global temp table (using the exists)
statement. If the Exists returns a false, I move on to processing without the temp table. If it
returns a true, I utilize the temp table to do some inserts. I create the temp table when my
application first starts up. The problem that I am facing is that the check for the temp table`s
existence seems to be failing. Is there any other way to check for the existence of a global
temp table??

I want to create several global temp tables. I've created a script:

This script creates a global temp table. When I run it in QA the table is created. When I close QA the table is dropped. This is correct since I found the following in BoL:
[Global temporary tables are automatically dropped when the session that created
the table ends and all other tasks have stopped referencing them. The
association between a task and a table is maintained only for the life of a
single Transact-SQL statement. This means that a global temporary table is
dropped at the completion of the last Transact-SQL statement that was actively
referencing the table when the creating session ended.]
I created a job that executes the statement above. The job exists with success, however the table is not created!
Why wasn't the table created??

But I don't think the global temp tables get stored in sysobjects.

Nested Stored Proc. And Global Temp Tables
Mar 2, 1999I have an sql file that contains several queries that are generating numbers to populate a sql table. The sql file is too large for a single sp so I am nesting them. I have 4 nested stored procedures. Each of the queries in each stored procedure dumps into its own global temp table. The final stored procedure needs to insert into a sql table all the information gathered in the global temp tables. So the final stored proc. looks something like:
"Create procedure usp_myProc_4 AS EXEC usp_myProc_3
INSERT INTO mySQLTable (a,b,c)
SELECT a, b, c FROM ##myTempTable (which was created in usp_myProc_1)
INSERT INTO mySQLTable (a,b,c)
SELECT a, b, c FROM ##myOtherTempTable
INSERT INTO......etc;"
I have done this befor and it worked fine. The only difference is that when I did this before these insert statements were being called from within an sp_makewebtask procedure.
Now when I try to save this final stored procedure it tells me "Invalid Object Name: ##myTempTable"
How do I call on these global temp tables from my final nested stored procedure?

Local Temp Tables And OLEDB/ODBC
May 5, 2008I have recently switched from ODBC to OLEDB and I have noticed a difference in the way these two handle local temp tables. With ODBC the scope of the local temp tables is the connection in which they were created (unless they are created in a stored proc, in which case the scope is the stored proc). That means you can create the temp table in one statement, fill it with data in another and retrieve the data in the third, and everything works fine as long as these statements are bound to the same connection. I have used this in a few places in my applications as a way to store connection specific data and a way to simplify some other things.
But now I have a problem. In OLEDB the scope of the temp tables is the session it was created in and that is not good for me since I can not store connection specific data in temp tables any more.
Any ideas?

Global Temp Tables Getting Dropped Form Time To Time

I have created several global temp tables to cache some intermediate results ...
However, it seems that after a while those tables will be dropped by SQL Server 2005 automatically (I have not restarted the server and no drop table statement ever executed against those tables). Is this a feature by design? How to make those global temp tables persistence to next service restart?

A regular permanent table is not an option:
Need to exec a procA which at the end also exec procB.
procA will insert to table A and also generate a intermidate result set to a ##A global table, it works fine at this point. However, when it exec the procB at the end of exec procA, the ##A global table is empty when entering procB.
The key is I want to pass a records set to the procB without using a tableTempB. Does a ## global table should be still alive until procB execution is done?
I also tried use table variable, but it does not look like to accept @tableA
as part of the procB's parameters.
Also tried function, but it could not support a #tempTable within it which will do a dynamic query insertion.

Global Temp Table Permissions

But i was able to do select query for the same from my SSMS...
i have incorporated all steps in single step and completed job...
My question is why ##temp table created in step1 is not able to use in other steps of same job ?

Local Vs. Global Uniqueness And General Tagability
Jun 17, 2008So, I have this idea of a database design I was hoping to get some input on.
I usually go through the process of creating a separate column for identity, like an auto-increment integer which serves as a context specific ID that easily can be passed around. However one of the short-comings I've come to realize is that the integer is just that, unique to the context and requires context information to make sense.
I'm pounding the idea of creating a separate table whose sole purpose is to provide global (database wide) unique IDs. As such each row in a table can still have an ID but instead of being tied to a specific context it will always make sense within the application. A foreign key constraint can ensure that and a relation.
Now, with a global ID which I can create FKs to, I don't have to create a separate table for relations between entities and can have relations through these global IDs and I think that's a good thing because if there are many relations between many entities they don't have to be defined more than once. There is also a single "hub" where all relations fit which will allow me to access most information through some relatively simple joins.
My concerns are performance and Linq to SQL implication. I'm worried that Linq to SQL might start pulling an excessive amount of data and I'm worried that the practicality of such a design might hurt the long running of the application development process.
But I'm surprisingly interested in what it could mean for a more ubiquitous view of data and tagging. Basically a way of any data to have relations to any other data through this yet simple design decision.
If you think this is a good idea or see no particular problem with, please let me know! If you think there's problems with my idea, please motivate your critic but do tell me what I should look out for, or if you know of any better approach to my idea of being able to look at the data through some more common mechanism (which applies to all tables and the entire database mostly from a programming perspective).

I am stuck in a bit of a conundrum for quite a while now, and I hope someone here will help me figure this one out.
So, first things first: let me explain what I need to do. I am
designing a web application that will allow users to consult info
available in a SQL2000 database. The user will enter the search
criterea, and hopefully the web page will show matching results.
The problem is the results shown aren't available per se in the DB, I
need to process the data a bit. I decided to do so on the SQL Server
side, though the use of cursors. So, when a user defines his search
criteria, I run a stored procedure that begins by building a dynamic
sql query and creating a cursor for it. I used a global cursor in order
to do so. It looked something like this:
SET @sqlQuery = ... (build the dinamic sql query)
SET @cursorQuery = 'DECLARE myCursor CURSOR GLOBAL FAST_FORWARD FOR ' + @sqlQuery
EXEC @cursorQuery
OPEN myCursor
FETCH NEXT FROM myCursor INTO ...
CLOSE myCursor
DEALLOCATE myCursor
This works fine, if there's only one instance of the
stored procedure running at a time. Should another user connect to the
site and run a search while someone's at it, it'll fail due to the
atempt to create a cursor with the same name.
My first thought was to make the cursor name unique, which led me to:

SET @cursorName = 'myCursor' + @uniqueUserID
SET @cursorQuery = 'DECLARE '+ @cursorName + 'CURSOR FAST_FORWARD FOR ' + @sqlQuery
EXEC @cursorQuery
...
The problem with this is that I can't do a FETCH NEXT FROM @cursorName since
@cursorName is a char variable holding the cursor name, and not a
cursor variable. So to enforce this unique name method the only option
I have is to keep creating dynamic sql queries and exucting them. And
this makes the sp a bitch to develop and maintain, and I'm guessing it
doesn't make it very performant.
So I moved on to my second idea: local cursor variables. The problem with
this is that if I create a local cursor variable by executing a dynamic
query, I can't extract it from the EXEC (or sp_executesql) context, as
it offers no output variable.
I guess my concrete questions are:
Is it possible to execute a dynamic sql query and extract a (cursor) variable from it?Is it possible to populate a local cursor variable with a global cursor, by providing the global cursor's name?Can I create a local cursor variable for a dynamic sql query? How?

Sync/Merge Local Sql Compact Databases To Single Global Database

devices. Due to space constraints, for one of the tables i have had to use
auto incrementing integer which works fine for the local database but i
would like to merge all of the users databases into a global database. The
table format can be seen below:

The Players table will merge fine as GUIDs are used. However, how will the
sync capabilities of compact SQL handle the sessions table? When it pushes
the local data to the remote database will it change the Sessions.ID column
to a unique field (as no doubt lots of people will have 1, 2, 3 in their
local databases and the global database must have a unique ID), and then
transfer this changed ID back to the local database? Furthermore, if it
changes the Sessions.ID column during the merge it will also need to update
the SessionDetail.SessionID foreign key to maintain referential integrity,
is this also handled?
So my question is, how much of this sync and data merge is automated and are
there any good examples or pointers for my scenario? I cannot reasonably use
a GUID for Session.ID as there will be lots of SessionDetail entries and the
size would be far too much.

Temp Table Vs Global Temp Table
Jun 24, 1999I think this is a very simple question, however, I don't know the
answer. What is the difference between a regular Temp table
and a Global Temp table? I need to create a temp table within
an sp that all users will use. I want the table recreated each
time someone accesses the sp, though, because some of the
same info may need to be inserted and I don't want any PK errors.

Those procedures scheduled to run every 3 hours.
Another question: for some reasons when I used global temp table, I wasn't able to schedule multi steps with every step executing one of the stored procedures.I think global temp tables should be visible to other stored procedures, right?

LOCAL USER Vs GLOBAL USER Set In Agent Service
Oct 6, 2006My replication is not working. I was able to create a transactional replication successfully. However, when i tried starting the agent on the snapshot, it wouldn't work. I figure that it was because my agent service login is different from that of the subscriber. my publisher and distributor is on local user whereas my subsciber sql services use our global login.

Login For Domain Local Group And Global Group
Jan 5, 2008I have one domoain in the forest. The domain level is set to Windows 2000 native mode and forest level is set to mixed mode. My SQL server 2005 server joined to this domain. I added a brand new domain local group and add a normal user account to this domain local group. I login to the SQL server 2005 server and make a query "SELECT * FROM sys.login_token". I cannot see my domain local group in sys.login_token. However, if I add my account to a global group, I can see it there.
Then, I setup another forest. This time, I have domain level set to Windows 2003 mode and forest level is set to Windows 2003 native mode. I do the same testing. This time, I can see my domain local group in sys.login_token.
Why does SQL server 2005 has this limitation? Is it a bug?

Feb 22, 2008I have 3 Checkbox list panels that query the DB for the items. Panel nº 2 and 3 need to know selection on panel nº 1. Panels have multiple item selection. Multiple users may use this at the same time and I wanted to have a full separation between the application and the DB. The ASP.net application always uses Stored Procedures to access the DB. Whats the best course of action? Using a permanent 'temp' table on the SQL server? Accomplish everything on the client side?

I would like to join two tables: one on a local server which I have admin access to and another server which I only have read access. The local table is very small, but the remote table is very large.
If I look at Query Analyzer's execution plan, it appears that the join will be done locally (i.e. the entire table is transferred from the remote server and then joined to my local table). Is there a way to create a temp table using linked servers, transfer my small local table to the remote server and then perform the join on the remote server? In the past, I have been able to use openquery to restrict the data to a small subset that is transferred but the local table is a little too large for that.
I appreciate any advice / guidance anyone can offer me!

Nov 3, 2000I am attempting to execute a stored procedure as the sql query for a data transformation from sql into an excel file. The stored procedure I am calling uses temp tables (#tempT1, #tempT2, etc.) to gather results from various calculations. When I try to execute this sp, I get
'Error Source: Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server
Error Description: Invalid Object name "#tempT1"'
Is there a way to make a DTS package call a stored procedure that uses temp tables?
