The Data Provider Or Other Service Returned An E_FAIL Status!?!?! WT-???

Oct 24, 2006

I'm running sql server ver 7.0 SP4.

I have an access project (.adp) that runs a view which is nothing more
than a select statement. Access locks up solid when I try to run this
query - with NO error messages what-so-ever.

If I sign onto the server, and run the view from enterprise manager - I
get:
"the data provider or other service returned an E_FAIL status" !?!?!
There is NO ERROR number, or further explanation of the message!!

Now - this query DID work last week - all of a sudden I get this error
- I've:
1) repaired / compacted this database
2) rebooted the server
3) spent several hours searching websites & groups for an explanation
a) I don't care how useless some people think enterprise manager is -
at least it gave me SOME kind of error; where access just locks up!
b) There are no issues with null values, or problem date fields
anywhere in these tables.
4) tried MANY variations on the query, and am now more confused than
ever.
5) I've RUN THIS QUERY IN AN ACCESS MDB WITH LINKS TO THE SQL SERVER -
AND IT WORKS!?!?!?!?

The query I'm using follows; if I remove ONE field from the select
statement - this query RUNS!!!
It doesn't matter what field I remove! It's as if, I can only have so
many fields in the select statement!?!?!?
This is clearly ridiculous since the query ran fine last week with the
same number of fields, not that
that should have anything to do with this, as sql shouldn't care how
many fields I request.
I'm not actually requesting any fields in the last table - but if I
remove this table it works!? If I leave this table, and select fields
from it, but remove another table - again it works!

So my questions:
1) What [T-] is going on here?
2) Why would an mdb be able to run a query that an adp can not!?!?
3) When will microsoft ever release a product that provides useful
error messages?

I really don't expect an answer to #3, because I know the answer is
NEVER - microsoft doesn't want to make solving problems easy.

Here's the query I'm using:

SELECT codes.proj_id, answers.report_date,
answers.release_date, answers.notes,
answers.answer_date, answers.answer_person,
answers.answer, answers.answer_status,
answers.answer_person2, codes.cust_id
FROM dbo.codes LEFT OUTER JOIN
dbo.demos ON
dbo.codes.code = dbo.demos.code LEFT OUTER JOIN
dbo.answers ON dbo.codes.code = dbo.answers.code

any help appreciated - TIA
Bob

SQL Server 2005 && Data Provider Or Other Service Returned An E_FAIL Status

Apr 22, 2007

Dear all,

I am running an Access adp application with SQL Server 2005 as back end database. I run a query by using Management Studio query window, and it returned correct results with some columns containing NULL value. But when I run this query through MS Access client side, popup an error "Data provider or other service returned an E_FAIL status" and crash the Access application. I moved the database back to SQL Server 2000, and it runs perfect on both client side and server side returning the correct result. This query is important for the application. Please help!!!!

Query as followed:

Data Conversion Failed. The Data Conversion For Column Value Returned Status Value 4 And Status Text Text Was Truncated Or On

Jan 7, 2008

Hi Experts,

I am extracting data from SQL Server 2005 to flat file destination. I am using SQL Command to specify the data selection query. One of my query uses Replicate function to derive a column value. When I execute this package it fails with the error "Data conversion failed. The data conversion for column "value" returned status value 4 and status text "Text was truncated or one or more characters had no match in the target code page".

The reason for the problem is that, it is taking the InputColumnWidth of the flat file destination as 8000 and I specified the OutputColumnWidth as 4.

If I change the OutputColumnWidth to 8000, it is working without any error but resulting in the column width of 8000.

I tried using DerivedColumn Transformation's Type cast and DataConversion Transformation but still I am getting the same error in the respective Transformation components.

Can anyone suggest how to solve this issue.

Data Access :: Recordset Returned By Query Have A Status Of Closed?

Oct 8, 2015

I'm running the following SQL query from LabVIEW, a graphical programming language, using the built in capabilities it has for database connectivity:

    DECLARE @currentID int
    SET @currentID = (SELECT MIN(ExperimentID) FROM Jobs_t WHERE JobStatus = 'ToRun');
    UPDATE [dbo].[Jobs_t]
    SET [JobStatus] = 'Pending'
    WHERE ExperimentID = @currentID;
    SELECT @currentID AS result
<main.img>

This is the analogous code to main() is a C-like language. The first block, which has the "Connection Information" wire going into it, opens a .udl file and creates an ADO.NET _Connection reference, which is later used to invoke methods for the query.

<execute query.img>

This is the inside of the second block, the one with "EXE" and the pink wire going into it. The boxes with the gray border operate much like "switch" statements. The wire going into the "?" terminal on these boxes determines which case gets executed. The yellow boxes with white rectangels dropping down are invoke nodes and property nodes; they accept a reference to an object and allow you to invoke methods and read/write properties of that object. You can see the _Recordset object here as well. <fetch recordset.img>

Here's the next block to be executed, the one whose icon reads "FETCH ALL". We see that the first thing to execute on the far left grabs some properties of the recordset, and returns them in a "struct" (the pink wire that goes into the box that reads "state"). This is where the code fails. The recordset opened in the previous VI (virtual instrument) has a status of "closed", and the purple variant (seen under "Read all the data available") comes back empty.

The rest of the code is fairly irrelevant, as it's just converting the received variant into usable data, and freeing the recordset reference opened previously. My question is, why would the status from the query of the recordset be "closed"? I realize that recordsets are "closed" when the query returns no rows, but executing that query in SSMS returns good data. Also, executing the LabVIEW code does the UPDATE in the query, so I know that's not broken either.

How To Figure Out If The Dataset Returned Any Data Or Not While Rendering The Report Through The SSRS Web Service

Jan 12, 2007

In one of my projects, i have been using the SSRS web service to render a report as pdf and then manually emailing it out.

I need to know whether the data set for the report returned any data or not (so that i can avoid emailing the report with a blank report body).

Ofcource this can be done by executing the same query (same as the query for the report) from C# code and checking the count of the resultset, before calling the SSRS Render method. But it might not be an efficient method.

Was wondering the the SSRS Web Service provides an property or method that can let me figure out whether the resultset was empty or not (after the report execution).

Thanks.

Data Returned From .WriteXML Is Different Than What Is Returned In Query Analyzer.

Jun 20, 2006

I have a strange problem. I have some code that executes a sql query. If I run the query in SQL server query analyzer, I get a set of data returned for me as expected. This is the query listed on lines 3 and 4. I just manually type it into query analyzer.
Yet when I run the same query in my code, the result set is slightly different because it is missing some data. I am confused as to what is going on here. Basically to examine the sql result set returned, I write it out to an XML file. (See line 16).
Why the data returned is different, I have no idea. Also writing it out to an XML file is the only way I can look at the data. Otherwise looking at it in the debugger is impossible, with the hundreds of tree nodes returned.
If someone is able to help me figure this out, I would appreciate it.

OLE DB Provider MSDAORA For Linked Server DBNAME Returned Message ORA-01476: Divisor Is Equal To Zero

Aug 14, 2007

Hi All,

I have a strange problem with one of my Linked server connections. I am connecting from
SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition (9.00.3042.00) to and Oracle 10g database using the Microsoft OLE DB Provider for Oracle. The connection works and I am able to select from all the Oracle tables except for 1 table. When selecting from this table I get the following error:

OLE DB provider "MSDAORA" for linked server "DBNAME" returned message "ORA-01476: divisor is equal to zero".

Msg 7330, Level 16, State 2, Line 1
Cannot fetch a row from OLE DB provider "MSDAORA" for linked server "DBNAME".

This probem happens if the table has rows or has no rows (empty table).

I have tried SELECT * and count(*) along with selecting a specific column from the table.

I can use SQL*plus from the system that the SQL database server running on it and select from the table using the same login/password that the linked server uses to rule out a permissions problem.

Any suggestions on what I can try next?

Thanks.

Handling Provider-level Errors From .Net SqlClient Data Provider

Jun 26, 2007

Hi,

After reading this helpful blog entry:

http://blogs.msdn.com/sql_protocols/archive/2007/05/13/sql-network-interfaces-error-26-error-locating-server-instance-specified.aspx

I think this might be a good place to ask the following question.

I am writing the error handling code for my data access layer for a web application. I am using the Enterprise Library Data Access Application Block. Although this supports generic database connections, I realized that I need to handle errors specific to each database type. Microsoft SQL is the only database type I am using for now, so I am using a try...catch (SqlException e).

In testing my code, I intentionally changed the instance name in web.config to a name that does not exist. I get the very popular error 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified. This is returned as a SqlException, but the SqlError.Number property is set to -1.

Am I getting "-1" because the provider hasn't actually connected to SQL yet, so it doesn't have an actual SQL error number?
Can I assume that (SqlError.Number == -1) is always a fatal, provider-level connection exception?
Will the provider ever use another SqlError.Number of its own? Or do all numbers besides -1 come from the SQL sysmessages table?.
Is there a comprehensive list of what exceptions might be raised by the SqlClient provider, including #26?

The reason for all the questions is that in a web application, I want to prevent the end-user from seeing the "real" exception if it has to do with configuration errors. However, maybe there are other errors that the user should see and handle? It's hard to know without a full list of SqlClient provider errors, along with the SqlError.Number that each error maps to.

Thanks and regards,

Mark

Unable To Set SQL Express Service Status To Running State

When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connection.(Provider : SQL Network Interfaces, error : 26 - Error locating server/ instance specified.)"

I know that by default SQL express doesnt not support remote connection but when i try to get the service status running, i got another error which is :

"The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion, you need administrator privileges to be able to start/stop this service. (SQLSAC)"

I am already logged on to the computer as an administrator but i still cant get the service to run! Pls help!

Mar 12, 2007

Hi,

SQL Server 2005 SP1. (+ 5 minutes fix installed).

Query notification subscription cretaed (sys.dm_qn_subscriptions).

Subscription does not fire in response to event.

sys.transmission_queue is empty.

profiler does not show errors.

sys.conversation_endpoints shows one endpoint in status SO. (along with a lot of left over garbage - about 300K records - but this should not be a problem other than storage).

I know SP2 is suppose to solve the garbage records problem but this is not our problem. This setup was working and then just stoped.

any ideas ?

HResult E_Fail Error

Dec 6, 2006

From a couple of days I have a strange and annoying problem on my development machine. Every time that I try to use the Import/Export wizard in the Management Studio I receive the error HResult E_Fail error refererencig to the dtsruntimewrap.

If I try to open a SSIS package and to check the setup of the connection I receive instead a message stating Could Not Edit OleDB Connection, error E_FAIL(0x80004005). (System.Data)

What can I do to fix this problem?

Thank you

SQL 'Server' Or 'Local' Database For Uploading To Hosting Service Provider

Mar 23, 2007

Hi, I'm developing a website using VWD 2005 Express, which needs a Membership system and a products database. Using the VWD inherent Web Site Administration tool makes the membership set up easy but by default it creates a 'Local' SQL database in a folder named 'Apps_Data' in the VWD project. My question is: considering I will need to upload my web site to a Hosting Service, would it be better to change the default so that the membership systems, and the product database I need, are created in an SQL 'Server' database instead of a 'Local' database?
The hosting service I am considering using is having a bit of a problem understanding this question, I hope it makes sense to someone or am I asking a stupid question?
Regards
Sean.

Forcing A Value If No Data Is Returned?

Jan 6, 2008

In the following procedure i write the results to a temp table called #temp1I now want to count the results of #temp1, if the count of #temp1 = 0
I want to insert 'No Records Found' into #temp.ERRORMSG else return what is in the table

any idea on how to do this?

ALTER PROC [dbo].[SPU_RPT_Savings_AnomalyDispatches] 40,'04/01/07|06/30/07'
@PropertyID varchar(4000),
@DropDown varchar(50)

AS
SELECT Client.CLIENT, Client.CLIENTID, ErrorEmailLog.ID, ErrorEmailLog.SITEID, ErrorEmailLog.PROPID, ErrorEmailLog.DISTINCTERRORS,
ErrorEmailLog.ERRORMSG, ErrorEmailLog.ERRORDATETIME, ErrorEmailLog.EMAILRECIPIENTS, Property.PROPERTY, Property.STREET,
Property.CITY, Property.STATE, Property.ZIP, Property.PHONE
INTO #TEMP1
FROM ErrorEmailLog INNER JOIN
Property ON ErrorEmailLog.PROPID = Property.PROPID INNER JOIN
Client ON Property.CLIENTID = Client.CLIENTID
WHERE (ErrorEmailLog.ERRORDATETIME BETWEEN SUBSTRING(CONVERT(VARCHAR(12), @DropDown), 0, 9)
