The Database Isn't Working With The Setup Based Deployment Of The Application
Dec 28, 2006
I deployed my application to my newly installed xp pro laptop
The prerequisites are installed
Now that I want to testdrive my database application I get this error:
An attempt to attach an auto-named database file c:/program files........................MyDB.mdf failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file can not be opened, or it is located on UNC share.
This is what I read in my app.config file;
<connectionStrings>
<add name="MasterDetail.My.MySettings.MyDBConnectionString" connectionString="Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|MyDB.mdf;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True"
providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />
</connectionStrings>
What could I be doing wrong? If there is need for additional information you have to tell me
Thanks, Richard

Geekz,
My problem is that , I had setup blog on server say, blog.xyz.com [I am using blogengine.net, which is in ASP.Net]. It is using sql server2005 as a backend for storing its blog's posts. After settingup blog, i tried to access its database through my windows application. But while development I was getting error that
"An error has occured while establishing a onnection to the server. When connecting to SQL server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the defaukt settings SQL server doesnot allow remote connections.(Provider Named Pipes, error :40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)"
I am using [String ConnectionString = "Data Source=sql-v123.mesa11.1Server.net; Initial Catalog=abc; User ID=xyz; Password=xyz123";]
Then I decided to created a webservice that will access the data from databse blog and store it somewhere in datatable and using windows application i will retrieve those data for end user. So I want to to know that whether i can access the datatable of webservice holding the blog data from windows application or not. if answer is Yes, then please provide me with source or some great links. Or if There is any other option so that I can access my database directly from windows application, then it would be better. Looking for your answers.
Thanks and regards

I use .net 2005 and server, the application i developed connects to a locally hosted mssql db, I want to deploy the application together with the db to client machine.
when i installed the application on the target machine, and run the application, it gave me this message : "an error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - could not open a connection to SQL Server)
I didn't quite understand this message. because in the "SQL Server Configuration Manager", i set the SQL Server (SQLEXPRESS) to "Automatic" start mode, which means that it is connected, doesnt it?
plz help
previously i was seeking help on vb.net forum, but got stuck on database distribution. please read more: http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=192093&SiteID=1&mode=1

My understanding is that Microsoft SQL Server 2005 (unlike SQL Server 2008) is NOT safe for image-based deployments or at least is not officially supported. Is anyone aware of what tasks need to be performed if an image-based deployment approach is taken?
I have Windows and SQL Server installed on HostA, and I want to create an image and install a copy of the image to HostB, HostC, and so on.
When the image has been restored to the target machine, I do the following:
1. Run NewSID.exe
2. Change Host Name
3. Change IP Address
4. Change the SQL Server sysservers table via sp_addserver.
I noticed that the SQL Server installation program has created sevral Windows groups and SQL Server has several logins, users, and schemas with names associated with the source machine, HostA.
My question are: What are these accounts used for? Can or should they be renamed (this shouldn't affect the SIDS, right)? Is there anything else that requires changing? Can this be automated? What "gotchas" should I look for? Or is this simply not "doable"?
Any help/guidance is appreciated!

We developed some of the chart reports. It is working fine when we preview the reports in the solution itself. After deployment to reportserver, when we access the same report, It is showing empty rectangle box (border of chart body). We have already checked data source/ Dataset mapping for the report.

Hi All,
This may be a question for multiple forums but here it goes.
I have a large SSIS package that works great in Visula Studio (BIDS) and in SQL Server under MSDB folder. The properties are all set to save with a sql server authentication package password and that works great too. The problem occurs when I try to use this package in a schedule. I get an error about an OLB DB not working. I've tried many things and figured out that all the OLB DBs do not work in this package but only error as a STEP in a schedule.
They all reference a Client Access ODBC connection - which is a connection to an AS400 IBM machine. The actual error is pasted below, where I guess the root of the problem is a incorrect password. The password is fine and I have proven that by running the package successfully under the MSDB folder of Stored Packages under Integration Service.

All:
I am writing an Internet/Extranet based (ASP.Net 2.0) web application that uses SQL server 2005 as the database. I am using forms authentication on my web application. I am also storing the connection string to SQL server in my web config file. The conn string is encrypted using DPAPI with entropy. I currently have created a SQL login account on my SQL server for use by the web application. This is the user ID I am using in my conn string. The reason for this is because all persons using the application will NOT have a windows login.
Here is my question: The login I created currently has defaulted to the "dbo" role and therefore has "dbo" rights to the database. I want to setup up this login account so that all it can do is execute stored procedures. I dont want this SQL login to be able to do anything else. In my application I am using stored procedures for ALL data access functions, via a data access layer in my application. Can someone guide me step by step as to how to setup this type of access for this SQL login.
Thanks,
Blue.

Here is my situation: I am creating a database driven ASP.Net web application that will be used over the internet. My ASP.Net application connects to my SQL server 2005 database/server by using a SQL server login. I am using the DPAPI API to encrypt my connection stings with a hidden entropy value for extra security. I am using the SQL login for obvious reasons, as my users will not have a windows login.
What I am trying to do: I want to limit this SQL login account to be able to just run/execute stored procedures and NOT access the tables or views directly. In my ASP.Net application I am using the MS applications data block, and I am using stored procedures for every single database access action. There is no inline SQL being executed from my web application.
What I have tried so far:
I created a new schema and made the above SQL login account owner of this schema. I then granted "Execute" permissions to the SQL login and DENY permissions to all other permissions.
I created an database role with "Execute" only permissions and DENY permissions to all other permissions.
What Happened: In BOTH of the above scenarios I tested a direct SQL statement against one of my tables, from my ASP.Net application and I was able retrieve data back, NOT GOOD, exactly what I am trying to STOP.
If someone could give me (Step-by-Step) guide on how to setup the situation I am looking for, I would be very grateful!
Thanks to all that help!

This morning I attempted to connect to my local copy of SQL Server (2012) (Win 7) using Windows Authentication. I was unable to do so and per the error log it was due to error 18456 (invalid credentials).
Yesterday I changed my windows password. Is it possible for this to be the cause?
FYI, following is from the error logs:

The logs showed the error occurred yesterday (4/28) which is about when I changed my password. The 17:09 log (last one) is when I shut down my computer. Note that I was logged into SQL Server when I changed my Windows password and worked with it several times through out the day.
Also, per the configuration manager SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER) (and all other services) is stopped and I was unable to start it ("The request failed or the service did not respond in a timely fashion).

Hello, as a ISV we develop a software product called Ultimo (www.ultimo.net).
I do have a license question: is it allowed for our customers to run our webbased application on IIS and use sql server express as a database.
The employees from the customer will use the application (intranet). For a small number of users sql express may do the job.
Untill now we always advice sqlserver with processor license.
With kind regards,
Erik.

I am currently working with 3 multi-valued parameters whose data sources are queries. The first 2 are required to have entries, 100% of the time, but the third one may or may not require selecting a value. Parm3's data source is filtered by the selections of Parm1 & Parm2. The data source for my report references Parm3 in a derived table that is then LEFT OUTER JOINed.
In the cases where the report does not require any selection from Parm3 I am still required to pick at least 1 entry. Can anyone shed some light on this, or provide a solution so I am not forced to pick any if I don't want?
Thanks in advance,
Michael

Why terms are not being corrected on a partial match? I thought this was the point of term based relation rules.
I am testing in an email address (nvarchar) field?
E.g. trying to correct @@ to @ and .con to .com (just to test)
And everything passes.
If I test with an entire value, the field is corrected.
E.g. 605688878@@qq.com corrects to 605688878@qq.com if I enter those exact values as term based relations.

I have a chart showing quantity against time. I had been using X-Axis in category mode, but wanted to include all dates, so changed it to Scalar mode by checking "Numeric or time-scale values".
However instead of displaying dates it simply shows integers, and to make things worse, Y-axis values have all come out as zero. It appears that the integer values are simply sequential values for each datapoint (i.e. 1,2,3,4 etc).
The category field for the X-Axis is a field called "Date" which comes from a Date Type field in the cube based on a datetime column in the DSV. The properties of the category in the chart are : Group On =Fields!Date.Value and Label =Fields!Date.Value.
Am I missing something obvious?

I am working with a vendor application called Cisco Unified Attendant Console - it operates on a Windows server with a SQL express database. The CUPs function of the application needs to reference a "contact" field with only the user portion of the contact's email address - generally, the contact's User ID will match the user portion of their email address, however, for this customer it does not (they use the employee number as the User ID and firstname.lastname as user portion of the email address.
Writing a script to accomplish the following:
The dbo.Contact_Properties table of the ATTCFG database has the following fields that we can work with:
- First_Name
- Last_Name
- Email
- User_Field_2
- Contact_Unique_Ref (appears to be the field that ties all other contact tables together ?)
Is it possible to create a script that could run daily to either, combine the First_Name and Last_Name fields (with a period between) and populate the User_Field_2 field for each user, or populate the User_Field_2 field with everything before the @ symbol in the Email field for each user?
Also, by default the servers that this application is installed on does not have SQL Server Management Studio installed - is it possible to accomplish with PowerShell script triggered from the Windows Scheduler?

I would like to generate a working schedule for employees for x-days ahead based on a starting date that the user can enter.
I have got 3 relevant tables:
1. Table X with (1) resourcenumber, (2) starting date working schedule and (3) the daynumber representing the starting date (this is ISO so 1 for Monday, 2 for Tuesday etc.)
2. Table Y has the schedule itself and can hold a 7-days schedule or a 14-days schedule. In case of 7 days schedule there a 14 (!) records with (1) resourcenumber, (2) daynumber, (3) starting hour a.m. (4) ending hour a.m (5) starting hour p.m and (6) ending hour p.m. In case of a 14-days schedule there are 28 records (a.m. and p.m. records)
3. Table Z with resource data.
An example to clarify (for fake employee 100):
Table X:
Resource: 100
Starting date: 2012-03-01 (from this date the schedule will be effective)
Daynumber: 4 (2012-03-01 was a Thursday)
Table Y (Resource has a 14 days schedule because per 2 weeks Monday is an off-day):
Record 1 shows: Resource: 100, Daynumber: 1 (= Monday, working day), AM-Starting hour: 09:00, AM-Ending hour: 13:00, PM-starting hour: 13:30, PM-ending hour: 17:30
Record 2: same but daynumber is 2
Record 3: same but daynumber is 3 etc.
...
Record 8 shows: Resource: 100, Daynumber: 8 (= Monday, off-day), AM-Starting hour: 00:00, AM-Ending hour: 00:00, PM-starting hour: 00:00, PM-ending hour: 00:00
Record 9: same as record 2 but daynumber is 9.
etc.
...
Record 14: same as record 7 but day is 14 (= last day)
The weekend days show as 00:00 for the hours (same as day 8 in example)
I generated the working schedule with a CROSS APPLY function based on the starting date and the x-number of days ahead.
I then evaluate the actual daynumber corresponding with that date with the daynumber in table Y. That works fine with a 7-days schedule but I can't get it fixed with a 14-days schedule. Day 8 in that schedule represents an actual day 1 but how do I know what actual date day 8 is ... I think I have to start with the starting date in table X ...
I think ideally I would like to have the generated days as follows (as an example in case of a 14-days schedule starting 2014-05-01 for 30 days ahead):
2014-05-01 = day 4 (= actual daynumber)
2014-05-02 = day 5
2014-05-03 = day 6
...
2014-05-10 = day 13
2014-05-11 = day 14
2014-05-12 = day 1
2014-05-13 = day 2
2014-05-14 = day 3
...
2014-05-24 = day 13
2014-05-25 = day 14
2014-05-26 = day 1
2014-05-27 = day 2
...
2014-05-31 = day 6
With this done I can compare the actual daynumber with the daynumber in Table Y.
The rownumber that the CROSS APPLY function generates has to be reset to 1 after day 14. I tried PARTITION BY in THE ROW_NUMBER function but to no avail ... The only field I can partition by is the maximum value of the daynumber (14 is the example) but that is not allowed in the rownumber function.

Please forgive me if I'm in the wrong category...
How do you deploy changes to a database? Is there something you can run to compare the two versions and create a script to do this? I've heard about the DTS package (now DTSX I believe) but am not sure how to set one up. If anyone could point me to an article or something that might clear things up, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Hello
I am currently developing a big winforms project that connects to a SQL Server 2005 database.
The idea is that the application will be deployed on random clients whenever needed. These clients have neither SQL Server installed, nor is there a server to provide a central database. The only option is to include the database file with the deploy.
Now, I've searched all around the internet on how to do this. I just can't seem to connect to the database-file from my deployed version. Is there something special that needs to be done?

I saw another post with a similar issue, but that resolution has not seemed to help. Can anybody give me insights as to where the "asanga" is coming from? That might help me diagnose the issue.

Greetings,I've been looking around all morning and can't seem to find a good answer on this so I thought I'd post a message here.I'm using the recommended practice of keeping the ASPNETDB.MDF data separate from my site data. (I have my site data located in separate databases but still keep them in the App_Data directory.)I'm using SQL Server 2005 Express on a Server 2003 box and I've implemented scheduled backups on the databases in the Sql Server. The questions I'm having are:1. Why isn't the ASPNETDB.MDF database getting attached to the server? Is it using User Instances?2. If it is using User Instance then isn't this degrading performance? If so, how to force it to not use User Instance?3. If User Instance is how it is supposed to work then how are we supposed to do a full backup of the ASPNETDB.MDF database if it isn't attached in the server? (xcopy doesn't seem to work on User Instances because of the dreaded "is being used by another process" error.)Any recommendations, advice, links, or answers to my questions would be greatly appreciated.

This question has been asked before, with vague responses
I'm using Visual Web Developer 2005 Express, SQL Server 2005 Express and SQL Server Management Studio Express.
When I create an application with Login controls, VWD automaticlly creates a ASPENTDB.MDF security database. I also create my own database for my application e.g. abc.mdf. In other words, I have two databases. However, my hosting company supports only one database. What do I (we) do?
I have seen articles on: aspnet_regsql . Does this create a new database with all the security features of ASPNETDB.MDF built into my new database i.e. abc.mdf?
(A) If yes, how do you run it with SQL Server Managment Studio Express? It sounds silly, but I need instructions here please ... Also, do you run this against abc.mdf or do you use it create abc.mdf?
(B) If not, how do you achieve a single database scenario?
I'm sure this is a very common deployment question, which is very confusing for most of us hobbyists that want to deploy their web applications

Hi Guys/Gals,
I have developed a database in Visual Studio 2005 (c#) ,using SQL Express as my database, on my local machine and deployed it to a different machine where it is being used in a live environment. No problems.
However, I have continued developing the application on my local machine and have made numerous additions to the structure of the database (on the development machine).
My question...How do I go about deploying the new database structure to the live machine without losing the live data?
Best regards
