Torn Page Detection And Auto Shrink: Performance?

Hello everybody,
First: SQL Server 2000 sp3a, HP cluster server, MS 2003 server,
database recovery model simple
Torn page detection:
When I have this option turned on, processes conected with updating and
writing in database, was MUCH more slower, than if I've this option
turned off.
It seams to me, that when this option is turned on, the sqlserver is
much more slower by any operation connected with writing, than without
this option.
This option is required for ensurance, that the data are written
properly on the media.
My question is:
if I have my database running under cluster, with RAID hd system, which
contains write cache, with additional checking, that the data will be
written correctly, is it necessary for me to keep this option turned
on?
Auto shrink:
When it is turned on, does it affect performance?
Personaly, I don't think so, but somebody is insysting on it, and I
would like to have an information from independent source about that.

Hi, We recently had one of our drives (RAID5) replaced because of failure. This has resulted in a torn page being detected on one of our smaller SQL 2000 databases. We have one or two larger SQL databases (30-70GB) on the same drive amongst several others and are now concerned that we may have a problem with these databases also. (The original torn page only came to light when a query was run on one of the tables). Is there anyway I can run a procedure on each of the databases to find out if we have any problems with torn pages? I obviously don't want to restore the databases as this will take a substantial amount of time that we just don't have at the moment. Any ideas that could put our minds at rest would be much appreciated.

I want to switch this setting off on all db's - that's easy.
But I presume that means the problem could occur without me knowing for weeks (maybe due to a defective disk driver). So is there a way I can schedule a maintainance task that will check for this problem out of hours? (Maybe by switching the DB option on for a while and then back off? If you switch the option on, does it check the whole database? Or does it just do checks during the actual update?) Hopefully there is a better way than that to do it...
Also, am I right in saying that CHECKSUM is new to 2005?
And what do you guys use: Checksum, Torn Page Detection or None?

Are there any issues turning this ON?
I have inherited a database which started life under SQL 7 (where Torn page Detection was OFF by default), and I'd like to turn it on. Will this reshuffle all the pages to make room for the extra check-sum, or is that stored in a single block somewhere else such that it can easily be added?
Is the change going to block access for long? (DB = between 2~5GB)

Hi all. I'm getting an error mssage which tells me I have a torn page:ODBC error 823 (HY000) I/O error (torn page) detected during read atoffset 0x00000080b5c000 in file 'D:WINSUPPORTDATAWin SupportDatabase_2_Data.NDF'.I ran DBCC CHECKDB and it returned no errors:CHECKDB found 0 allocation errors and 0 consistency errors in database'WIN Support Database'.I really don't know what to do at this point. I'm not a databaseadministrator, just a programmer, and our DBA is not here. Anysuggestions?Thanks,Jennifer

We received the following errors:
1) Error: 823, Severity: 24, State:
2) I/O error (torn page) detected during read at offset 0x0000001455a000..erc
Network team thinks this was caused by low disk space. I was running a database shrink last night, and someone had transferred a file to server prior to my job that took 90% of disk. My shrink job failed and then 20 minutues later we satrted to recieve the two above mentioined.
Can a failed shrink job - which failed due to low disk space cause a torn page to occur? I have not heard of this...

HiWhen trying to create an SqlServer job, clicking OK' I got the message"Error 823: I/O error (torn page) detected during read at offset..... infile 'd:sqlserverMSSQLdatamsdata.mdf'. The job was not saved"I asked about the problem a little to find out that I need to restore abackup of MSdb because the job definitions are there. I rrad some otherplace (I can't remember where) that in order to restore MSdb I need torestore a backup of Master as well.Can anyone give me some more information on this.Is there any way else to do it besides restoring the backup ?To restore, do I need to recreate the database or just restore theappropiate backup file ?David Greenberg

I am using MSDE in sql server 2000.
When the database data file size exceed 2G limit, I tried to shrink the db and it
reduced by about 100MB.
2 days later, I checked the db data file size and it was reduced to 550MB, which is
1/4 of the original db size!
Please kindly explain the reason of this case, and how can it be monitored
effectively?

I would like to do an update statement to set auto shrinks to zero. A value of one means they are on. I have been using this select statement and manually changing them, but can't use it in a where clause.
select name, databasepropertyex(name, 'isautoshrink') shrink
from master.dbo.sysdatabases
I would like to do "where shrink = 1", but it won't work.
Any suggestions?

Hi, I am trying to automate shrinking the transaction log file on SQL server.
Every so often we get errors with our application using SQL server, in which I resolve by running the backup log and shrink log commands. However, recently I got the error: Could not allocate space for object 'table_name' in database 'database_name' because the 'Primary' file group is full. To resolve this I had to create another transaction log and then run the backup log and shrink log commands.
I know need to automate the process of shrinking the log file. I have checked and the Auto Shrink checkbox is ticked but these errors still occur.
How can I delete the additional log file I created and automate this task of shrinking the log file within SQL server? Any help would be appreciated...Thanks

Is it possible to manually force/call/start the system AUTOSHRINK process? I have an issue that appears only when the engine shrinking process is running and I need this to reproduce my bug.
I know how to start a "regular" database shrink process with:DBCC SHRINKDATABASE(xxxx);, but this is not the same as one started from the database engine.

Hi,
There was a requirement to have the table header as part of frozen rows in excel when exported because there are about 1000 rows in the report and the column header has to be retained during scrolling. Since only page headers will be frozen in excel export, the text boxes was copied from the table header row to the page header. After all text boxes were copied, the table header row was removed. After modifying the report, I noticed that the excel export report took more than half an hour for exporting the data. I tried to reproduce the problem in a sample and I was able to reproduce it using AdventureWorks data source. This report before modifying takes 1 minutes to export. After moving all the column headers to page header, it takes 25 minutes to export. Has anybody faced this issue and is there any solution for this performance problem? Thank you. Here are the steps to reproduce:
1. Create a new data source for AdventureWorks database
2. Create a new report with the AdventureWorks data source and with the query 'SELECT * FROM Person.Contact'
3. Run the report and export in excel format and note down the time taken for the same - Approx it will less than a minute.
4. Open the report layout and include a page header (Report->Page Header) and move the title from body to the page header.
5. Select each column header, copy the cell and paste in the page header and align it with the column in the body. Alternatively, a new textbox for each column can be created and arranged in the page header. (As a result, there are 16 textboxes in the page header).
6. Now, run the report and export in excel format and note down the time taken and please notice that it takes 25 minutes.
7. Delete some of the text boxes in the page header, the excel export takes less time and is dependent on the number of textboxes in the page header.

I have been trying to use the Clustering algorithm for Anomaly Detection, but it has been quite difficult to get correct results for PredictCaseLikelihood.
Using a very large number of clusters helped, but there are other problems.
The algorithm does not take into account all the columns in my nested table, but only uses Exists/Not Exists for the nested table key column. In my case the nested table contains also a column with a count of key attribute.
I am about to abandon the Sql Data Mining.
Does anyone have more insights into tuning the Clustering algorithm for anomaly detection?

Since upgrading from SQL Server Management Studio 2008 R2, I've noticed that it no longer autosaves queries that have not been manually saved first. If a file has been manually saved the autorecover files end up in the following directory:
%appdata%MicrosoftSQL Server Management Studio11.0AutoRecoverDatSolution1
However, I have ended up in the situation where I have unsaved queries when my computer has crashed and have not been able to recover them.
I have also found references to .sql files stored in temp files in the following directory, but the files here seem to be very haphazardly caught:
