Trying To Connect To SQLExpress On Vista
Apr 23, 2007
Hello !
I am trying to connect to a SQLExpress installed on Vista through the network.
I did enable all protocolls and in the Surface Area Configuration I activated Remote Connections ("using both TCP/IP and named pipes").
But still I get the following error:
"An error has occured while establishing a connection to the serveR. When connection to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that uder the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interface, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified) (Microsoft SQL Server)"
Thanks a lot for any help!

Fabianus

Hi, Mike, et al,
First of all, I am a self taught programmer, and a Sql Neophyte, and know just enough to get confused (or in trouble). I have a TabletPC app that uses SqlExpress, installing as 'Click Once'. Works great on XP, but my app comes to a screeching halt on Vista, because of the permissions/contact network administrator issue. I read Mike's post (dated a year ago, Oct 06) about using SSMSE to create a new Login with sysadmin rights for the current user. Long story short, completed it successfully, but it didn't work.
I have been browsing posts here on the subject, but I am confused. Does my Vista user need to install SP2? Will that fix the problem? I am sorry, but some of the posts on this subject are over my head.
Could I prevail on one of the moderators to point me in the right direction, or to explain in v-e-r-y b-a-s-i-c terms what I need to do to help my Vista users access my SqlExpress DB?
Many thanks!
Steve

I had sql express and microsoft express accounting working fine on xp. When I updated to vista and reinstalled sqlexpress with sp1 and management express sp1, I can not get the server to register. Any command I click gives error message "this type of initializer <module> threw and exception". Also when I tried to install accounting from office 2007 cd, will not install giving same message. Ihave uninstalled and reinstalled sql express w sp1 several times with no success. I can find no reference to this error message anywhere. Anybody got an idea where I can do to get this to work properly? Thanks in advance.

Hi there,
I just installed a brand new Business Vista and moved my old databases from WinXP to this partition. Everything seemed to be OK for a couple of days but now I am getting some errors I cannot resolve. There is no online help for this topic.
Just a bit of background. I have to establish connections between my Sql Server databases and an MS Visual Management Studio 2005. I think the trouble began after I started doing connections this morning.
Before that did established connections between the two successfully but for various reasons I had to delete them, download the folder with databases anew and start from scratch. I do not quite remember what the trouble was but it was serious. I could not really use the connections in the VS.
When I began setting up connections today the Vista complained that I did not have permissions to access those files. OK, I went to the database folder and individually gave permissions to two groups I previously set up: Debugger & Microsoft Visual Studio. They both have the same users: me and administrator who is myself.
After that act I tried to open connections again (in VS). I got an error that user instances were disabled. It said: use sp_configure to enable user instances.
I went to Sql Server and tried to do just that. Before I could execute queries. Now I am getting errors even when I try to open a new query.
TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express
------------------------------

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

A connection was successfully established with the server, but then an error occurred during the login process. (provider: Shared Memory Provider, error: 0 - No process is on the other end of the pipe.) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 233)
For help, click: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink?ProdName=Microsoft+SQL+Server&EvtSrc=MSSQLServer&EvtID=233&LinkId=20476
OK, this thing appeared to have been resolved just a minute ago but I still decided to keep it here perhaps someone will comment on it because the way I resolved it was a total lack of understanding how I did it. Just clicked here and there and that was it.
Now need to resolve the user instances issue. I used sp_configure stored procedure in a query and got the result that the maximum number of user instances is 1. I do not know how I can change this parameter. I tried to use sp_configure with parameters with no good result.
If anyone know how to do it, please help.
Thanks.
P.S. I am sorry, that error has not been resolved. I keep getting it.

When I installed VS2005, a copy of SQLEXPRESS was also installed. It appears that it was installed using WIndows Authentication. It doesn't show up in Programs and Features or the VS2005 Setup so I can't remove it and install it using a userid and password. Is there a default userID and password that it was installed with?

I have an application that for the most part uses a local SQLExpress database, but might link to another server. The application has worked OK, and is is written in VB using ADO, and some DMO. I guess I lucked out prior to Vista, because I used the Builtin/User login and could create, attach, or alter existing databases. With Vista and UAC, I don't have the required privileges.
What can I do during an install (presumably as an administrator) to grant the required privilege to the builtin/user? Or shouldn't I be using the builtin/user?
Can I give the builtin/user "Create Database on Master" during an install, and then they would be able to create databases, when the app runs under a user?
Sorry for the ignorance - I'm pretty new to SQL and ADO.
Regards,
Howie

This what happened in Vista. I just set up my SqlServer Express (SSMS), attached my databases: all of them except one.
The reason why it happened is that when I copied my folder with DBs from XP to Vista I found out that one mdf file was missing.There was the log file for that DB intact. It is a somewhat secondar database (at leas temporary until I will have resolved some tricky issues in C# app, then it will get full load). When I bagan chenging my conn strings in C# to accomodate new Vista's tastes I realized that that DB was not attached to VS 2005 either. I began to investigate.
I went to XP and checked thoroughly. First I thought this DB (mdf file for this DB) was stored in another partition. It does not seem to be the case. The entire disk was searched: nothing found.
The weird thing is: I can see this DB in SSMS in XP with ALL tables intact. I opened the design and also opened the tables. The values are all there. This is my first question: how can it be explained? Could it be that all the tables are in the log file for this DB?
So at this point I have no way to copy the DB from XP to Vista the way I did before with other DBs.
The next problem is this:
I went to Vista and tried to restore this DB from a backup. The backup may not be too fresh but I do not care. All I need is the structures and stored procedures. Vista gives me hard time.
This is my code:
RESTORE DATABASE [intraDay] FROM DISK = 'J:SqlServerBackUpsIntraDayintraDayFullRM.BAK' WITH RECOVERY,
TO 'C:intraDay.mdf'; -- this is just to try the RESTORE in principle. I will restore the DB to a different folder.
GO
I get an error that
Msg 156, Level 15, State 1, Line 2
Incorrect syntax near the keyword 'TO'.
I understand that the MOVE clause may be missing. I tried that but got in trouble with it as well.
Will appreciate any help.
I've never done RESTORE before.
Thanks.

Clean vista install,
Clean full office 2007plus install
Clean visual studio 2008pro install
Many failed sql 2005dev installed, did SKUUPGRADE-1
Now have office2007 Smallbiz, VS2008pro, SqlExpress and sql 2005dev installed.
Note outlook 2007 error on first run after sql2005dev.
Seams to have broken and created a new sql connection, don€™t think its the original.
but that€™s not the current issue !
web admin page error, could not connect to db
I did regsql.exe from the net dir and the web admin work and the db is created for roles and such in vs 2008 via web admin page and mssql.
Managed to create db in apps data folder and modify connection in server explorer.
Added table to aspx page from apps folder and it runs via f5, but errors under localhost.
€œCannot open user default database. Login failed.€?
€œLogin failed for user 'NT AUTHORITYNETWORK SERVICE'€?
Have seen some reference to iis permissions, but not sure what to change?
Is it a file level permission, a virtual permission
Works in vs2008 using f5 run!
http://localhost:50115/vs2008/
Can work with apps folder db file in vs 2008 server explorer
Had to modify db connection back to sqlexpress in server explorer
Can work with db in sql management studio, have three local instances;
Pc
Pcsqlexpress
Pcsmallbiz
Can display db data in aspx page via f5 , but not localhost unless vs2008 is not running!!!
Have not been able to make vs2008, Sql2005dev, sqlexpress all work together using iis in vista via localhost and vs2008 f5 at same time??
Can€™t do anything with db in solutions explorer, but can work in server explorer if I modify connection back to sqlexpress
Can€™t display data aspx page via localhost
http://localhost/vs2008/
Cannot open user default database. Login failed.
Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITYNETWORK SERVICE'
Localhost works in iis via virtual directory if I remove db grid in page or vs is not running
Could someone test and tell how to use all of these together?
What is going to happen if I get it to work local and then try to upload to shared host?
<connectionStrings>
<remove name="LocalSqlServer" />
<add name="LocalSqlServer" connectionString="Server=wabpc;Database=VS2008test;Integrated Security=true" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />
<add connectionString="Server=SQLEXPRESS;Database=Database.mdf;Integrated Security=true" name="sqlexpress" />
</connectionStrings>
If I close vs2008 and the management studio, localhost works and displays the db info!!
Open vs2008, modify connection back to sqlexpress and the aspx page breaks via localhost
Close vs2008 and local host works
Open vs2008 and get a error 25 in server explorer connection string invalid, but f5 works after the offline clears.
I change db connection back to sqlexpress to work with db in server explorer!
That breaks localhost, but f5 works
Any ideas?
Need more Tylenol

Hello,
I have finish building my ASP.NET site using VS 2005 and it compile just fine. Than I try hosting it to the web via IIS v5.1 and I am getting permission error from SQL express.
I have posted a detail question in experts-exchange.com and since you need a user account to even view the thread, I have taken the liberty to save the thread as .html file and host it to my ISP site. You can see the detail problem I am having here: http://users.accesscomm.ca/mm/EEdetail.html
I am going to list out some stuff I have done:
1. I have two database that need access, the ASPNETDB.mdf for user login and another database (PhotoDataBase.mdf) to store information relating to the photo I uploaded to my ASP.NET site.
2. I have already follow this How to site: http://blogs.msdn.com/sqlexpress/archive/2005/05/05/415084.aspx and setup:
- TCP/IP enable, as shown here:
- I have started SQL Browser service
- The firewall part I am not so sure about. I am currently using Zonealarm....
3. I have installed SQL Server Management Studio Express(SSMSE) and attach the two database to it.
4. I have set SSMSE server properties to accept both SQL and window authentication.
5. I have made sure that both database "read only" setting to false
6. I have setup SQL login with User ID = SQLLOGIN
Here is the original connection in web.config:
<add name="ConnectionString"
connectionString="Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=|Da
taDirectory|PhotoDataBase.mdf;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True"
providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />
and here is the new connection I just type in web.config that replace the original one:
<add name="ConnectionString"
connectionString="Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|PhotoDataBase.mdf; Server=MINGDESKTOP; Integrated Security=False; uid=SQLLOGIN; Password=XXXXXX;"
providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />
and the error i get are the follow:
Server Error in '/' Application.

whenever i try and choose the database i wish to work with like below. I end up with an error message about the user not being associated with a trusted sql server connection
cnStr = @"Data Source=serverSQLEXPRESS;Initial Catalog=sqldata;User ID=blahme";
same with this one
cnStr = @"Data Source=STOCKYARDSQLEXPRESS;Initial Catalog=DB;Trusted_Connection=Yes;";
i figured this was all permission based so i kept dorking around with security adding my user name to anything i could find, and also went through and dozen or so connection strings and found when i take out the DB name that i can open a connection.... as the code below works...
cnStr = @"Data Source=ServerSQLEXPRESS;Trusted_Connection=Yes;";
cn.Open();
I plan on importing another database so how will i later on choose between the two, i notice i can create logins only at the security for the sqlexpress and not for my database? did i mess up how i created the database?
i have added my username and given permissions to the security for the database i wish to connect to, but is there another step im missing? i would keep trucking but i would like to have multiple DB on the sql express and pick and choose at the code level, maybe im misunderstanding what the catalog should include or i can change the connections database at another point?

I am trying to use built-in login authentication using SQLExpress (SQLMembershipProvider Class). I have run the utility "aspnet_regsql" both with and without the following switches "-E -A m". Either way it fails to connect and tells me I may need to enable remote connections. I have done that and set it to use both TCP/IP and pipes, even though the connection is local. I still get the same error message. If I open up SQL Server Manager, I can see that there is a user account set up for ASPNET.

I am trying to set-up membership options on my MS Server 2003.
I also have a Computer running MS XP Professional sp2.
With the Advanced in stall of SQLExpress - trying to establish cojnectivity on the server fails when using the ASP.NET Configuration button.
This works fine on the XP box.
On the security tab the following message apppears:
There is a problem with your selected data store. This can be caused by an invalid server name or credentials, or by insufficient permission. It can also be caused by the role manager feature not being enabled. Click the button below to be redirected to a page where you can choose a new data store.
The following message may help in diagnosing the problem: Unable to connect to SQL Server database.
I've compared all settings in ssemee, surface manager etc. - all identical.
run aspnet_regsql on both machines. Added the SERVERASPNET account to SQLExpress and to the aspnetdb database.
I've enabled TCP,remote connections, named pipes etc. to no avail.
Any suggestion as to what the error could be would be most appreciated - been trying now for 3 days to get this working without any success.

Hello,
I am using the following connection string to connect to SQL Server 2005 Express Edition installed on my local PC.
string sqlstr = "Server=(local);Database=MyDB;User ID=sa;Password=sa;Trusted_Connection=False";
And it gives me the following error. The string works fine in computer with SQL Server 2000 instance but fails with 2005. The string also fails for "Server = localhost".
However the string works very fine if I use the name of Server 2005 i.e ./SQLExpress
===================================
Cannot connect to (local).
===================================
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) (.Net SqlClient Data Provider)
------------------------------
Error Number: 2
Severity: 20
State: 0
------------------------------
Now the main problem is that, of course I could use a named instance, but since I am embedding the Connection String in a dll file so that any user can use it to connect it to the local instance of the SQL Server 2005 installed in his/her computer, I need to use "server = localhost". Doesn't SQL 2005 support this. If yes, where could i find option to enable it?
I have enabled every option available in surface area configuration for SQL Server 2005, but nothing seems to help out. I even use local as well as remote connections using both TCP/IP and named pipes.
Can nyone help me out?

SQL Service is running, but SQL Manager attempt to connect to SQL Server instance times-out even though I correctly identify instance as SQLEXPRESS? Everything seems to be normal - both SQL Server and Manager are on a single Windows XP home machine. Any suggestions. Thanks

Hi to everyone!
Here is my problem: I have SQLEXPRESS running with Windows Authentication on a "server" PC named "ASUS1", and I need to connect from a "client" PC named "Presario1", user "Mauro", connected through a peer network (I use a cross-over cable); both PCs belongs to the same workgroup named "RMT-WORK", and they can see each others shared folders without problems.
I have installed the connectivity components + Management Studio Express on Presario1, and enabled named pipes and TCP/IP protocols; then I've got SQL Browser running. I have also added the Login "Guest" on ASUS1SQLEXPRESS.
When I start Management Studio Express on Presario1 and browse for servers I can select "ASUS1" as database engine but when I try to connect I receive "Error 40: could not open a connection to SQL Server" (same result using SQLCMD); I have tried to add on ASUS1SQLEXPRESS a user "Presario1Mauro" with "CREATE LOGIN [Presario1Mauro] FROM WINDOWS" but I receive a "Windows user not found" error...
Can anyone help me?

Hi all,
I have to deal with a private network of laptops which are all equiped with preinstalled "Windows XP home"
I've installed SQLExpress on one of these, but I cannot connect on it from the rest of the laptops. (I've successfuly done this with "Windows XP profesional" though, and local connections work fine as well).
I've already setup the SQLExpress to accept conections throuigh TCP/IP but I can not think of something else. (Security comes to mind, but I do not know how to resolve it on "Windows XP Home").
Thank you
Ioannis

Hi all,I'm having a big problem here. I can't seem to connect to a database of MSSQL Server 2005... Here is what I've did:1. Under the Server Explorer>Data Connections. Right click and choose "Add Connection..."2. Data Source was "Microsoft SQL Server Database File". Click OK.3. I browse to the database in the MSSQL.2/MSSQL/Data folder.4. Click on the "Advanced" button, and change the default DataSource from .SQLEXPRESS to .MSSQLSERVER. Click OK5. Received this error:An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default setting SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 25 - Connection string is not valid) Only .SQEXPRESS that I was able to connect to... i've tried the solution from Microsoft, opened SQL Server 2005 Surface Area Configuration and enabled "Local and remote connections", checked the option "Using both TCP/IP and named pipes" but it didn't help. This is frustrating because I can't get the Membership provider, login to work on my host. Please help. Thank you very much,Kenny.

Hi all, I'm having a little trouble connecting to a SQLExpress instance on a remote domain using SQL Server Management Studio Express.I've read that by default the program is set up locally only, so have edited the Surface Area Configuration. It only gives me the option to edit 'Services and Connections' on the localhost, but have edited the Remote Connections to use TCP/IP and Named Pipes. In the Management Studio, I enter the server name, and login credentials. On the Connection Properties tab I changed the network protocol to TCP/IP though everytime I attempt to connect I get the following error message: Any help would be greatly appreciated. Rich

Hello!
I am new to SQL server 2005 and Windows Vista. I installed SQL server 2005 and SQL Server 2005 SP2. It seems that I get a "cannot connect to server" problem. I see the "Connect to server" popup window when hit the "Connect Object explorer" under the file menu or "Connect database Engine" under the Object explorer pane. Trying to see a Server name I recognized there was nothing there. Tried "browse for more" but It seems that no servers can be found at all.
I logged into Windows Vista with my account (with administrator rights, but not the Main Administrator account itself). I also tried SQL Server 2005 User Provisioning Tool for Vista, but it cannot find no instances in the "Available Privilegies" window.
I read a lot on forums on the net, but what is the best solution to use for this situation? Maybe I shall log on with the Main Admin Account and install again? Or is there better ways? Please can someone give me the best practices for this topic?
Thanks in advance!

Hi all. I have a 64 bit Windows 2003 cluster with 4 named instances of SQL Server 2005.
Im unable to connect via ODBC or from applications from Windows Vista to the named instances.
There are no problem connecting to default intances.
The ODBC give me a SQL State 08001 error. In the bottom of the error it talks about not allowing remote connections, but the instances allows both TCPIP and named pipes.
The SQL 2005 cluster are running SP2 and Vista have Native Client upgraded to SP2.
Any ideas??

Hi,
I am using Sql server 2005 on our local network. I have an vpn open to an other network.
Before installing Vista SP1, I could simple connect to the db (sql server management studio, windows authentication).
After installing Vista SP1, I can connect to sql server when the vpn is closed. But when the vpn is open, I get the following message:
Login failed for user ''. The user is not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection. (.Net SqlClient Data Provider)
Does anyone have a clue?

Hi,
I've installed Windows Vista 64 bit on my pc (I had XP Pro). Also I've installed the management studio of SQL Server 2005 developer edition which I've uses also on my XP machine.
I've a online server at "myserver.myprovider.com". With C:WindowsSystem32cliconfg.exe a made a TCP/IP alias to with the name "MySql". In XP I then can connect in Sql management studio to "MySql" and everyting works perfect (I also use some other programs which needs the cliconfg alias.
After I installed Vista, I take the same steps (I've done this over 30 times, but in XP). When I then want to connect to "MySql" in management studio, I get this error: (translated from dutch) "Cannot connect to MySql. Maybe this error is caused by the fact that the SQL Server don't allow external connections. Error: 53.
Can someone help me with this?

Hi,
Sorry if this is the wrong forum.
I'm trying to connect to a remote server (on shared hosting) with Management Studio Express. I tried using it on Vista and it connects to the server and database perfectly. However, on Vista it gives the following error everytime:
TITLE: Connect to Server------------------------------
Cannot connect to sgc.gbdns.net.
------------------------------ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 53)
For help, click: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink?ProdName=Microsoft+SQL+Server&EvtSrc=MSSQLServer&EvtID=53&LinkId=20476
------------------------------BUTTONS:
OK------------------------------
However, the host obviously has SQL server to allow remote connections as I'm able to connect from XP.
Both the XP and Vista PCs are running Avast free edition (the same builds) and both are running Windows firewall with management studio allowed through. Can anyone help?
