Unexplained Unicode Conversion Between Sybase ASA And SQL Server

Nov 9, 2007

I'm having data converted to unicode and I don't understand why.

My Sybase server is configured with the standard Latin CP1252 character set and my source column is varchar(2000). My understanding is this should not be unicode in Sybase.

My SQL Server 2005 SP2 is configured with the standard SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS collation. Again, my understanding is this should not be unicode.

I'm connecting to Sybase Adaptive Server Anywhere 9.0.2 from SSIS SP2 via the Data Reader Source using the .Net ODBC data provider.

My SQL Server destination column is a varchar(2000) column. To me, it looks like I'm going from one equivalent data type to another yet I receive the 'cannot convert between unicode and non-unicode data types' message.

Now, I can get around this in several different ways, but that's not my question. My question is: WHERE is the conversion to unicode occuring and WHY is it occuring?

Non-Unicode To Unicode Data Conversion

Jul 23, 2005

Hi all, we are now planning to upgrade our application from anon-unicode version to a unicode version. The application's backend isa SQL Server 2000 SP3.The concern is, existing business data are stored using collation"Chinese_PRC_CI_AS", i.e. Simplified Chinese. So I thought we need toextract these data out to the new SQL Server which is using Unicode (Iassume it means converting them to nchar, nvarchar type of fields for Idon't enough information from the application side, or is there ageneral unicode collation that will make even char and varchar types tostore data as Unicode?).The problem is what's the best and most efficient way to do this dataconversion?bcp? DTS? or others?thanks a lot

Unicode Conversion

Jan 9, 2006

I have created an SSIS (think that is what DTS is called now) packageto run on a SQL 2005 server. It's job is to connect to a SQL 2000server, execute a stored procedure, and insert the returned data into atable of the '05 box.In both tables (source and destination), the string columns are definedas VARCHAR. But when I run my package, i get back the following error'Column "xxx" cannot convert between unicode and non-unicode stringdata types'.While they DO have different collation values --SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS on sql 2000 database andLatin1_General_CI_AI on the sql 2005 database (columns are set to usedatabase default value) -- it was my understanding (ormis-understanding) that collation values do not affect unicode issues. Is there anything I can look at to further find the problem or even fixit? Thanks,

String To Varchar Conversion - Sybase And SSRS

Oct 3, 2005

Hi,

I am having an issue with a Report in SSRS against a Sybase db.

The dataset for the report is a Sybase stored proc which is passed a parameter (varchar). When I run the proc in Sybase it runs fine, when I run it in SSRS in the data tab it runs fine, but when I try to preview the report, or run from IE after deploying it I get the following error:

An error has occurred during report processing. (rsProcessingAborted) Get Online Help
Query execution failed for data set 'Table_1'. (rsErrorExecutingCommand) Get Online Help
The given type name was unrecognized

Looks like it is an error converting the string in SSRS to a varchar in Sybase, but I don't know how to fix it.

If I create a table with an identity (int) column and the varchar column, join this to the proc and pass the int as the parameter the report works fine!! (This is not an option in production though.)

I am using SybaseASE OLE DB Provider Version 02.70.0032

Any ideas?

TIA,
Guytz

DTS Erroring On Index In Unicode Conversion

Jun 14, 2006

I have undertaken the following process to convert a database to unicode support. This is sql 2000 SP4

- Create a new database dbnew
- Script the old database dbold with all objects, everything, and dependencies
- Global replace varchar with nvarchar (etc etc) in the script
- Execute the script to create all objects into dbnew
- (Objects all exist fine)
- Startup DTS and choose olddb as the source, newdb as the destination
- On DTS step 3 choose "Copy Objects and Data between Sql Server Databases"
- Untick "Create destination objects"
- Change copy data to append data (all tables in dbnew are empty)
- Tick copy all objects
- Untick "Use default options" and clear every option (so hopefully we are only copying data)
- Click next and run

DTS gets through the first "phase" to 100% but then it fails on a duplicate key error on a table that has a unique key on its (now nvarchar) description field

Yet in Query Analyser I can do "insert into failingtable select * from olddb..failingtable" and the data comes across fine.

So why is it failing in DTS ? And are there any other options or settings I can try ?

thanks

Hello!

For the Northwind database, everything worked fine, however for the pubs database, the error message above was returned.
I have no idea how to move forward, a client of mine is having the same problem, but I could not get any closer to the problem.

Thanks for any help,

Faster Way To Handle Unicode Conversion Problem

Dec 5, 2007

Hello,
I have another situation in which I have a source table with non unicode columns where the data needs to be copied to an MS Access 2000 table. As far as I know, the Access columns that hold string data can only be unicode.

Is there a way, maybe with a code page, that I can catch any conversion problem on any column without having to explicitly address every problem column in a derived column or data conversion transform? Probably not, but I thought I'd check.

Thank you for your help!

Flat File Source Error Output Conversion Error With UNICODE Files

i have a weird situation here, i tried to load a unicode file with a flat file source component, one of file lines has data like any other line but also contains the character "ÿ" which i can't see or find it and replace it with empty string, the source component parses the line correctly but if there is a data type error in this line, the error output for that line gives me this character "ÿ" instead of the original line.

simply, the error output of flat file source component fail to get the original line when the line contains hidden "ÿ".

i hope you can help me with issue.

Unexplained Log File Growth

Jul 1, 2004

We have a SQL 2000 database here. As of 3 days ago, it was about 75 megs ( 73 Data / 2 log ). As of today, it is 73 Meg Data / 15 GIG log. The log file went from 2 MEG to 15 GIG in a matter of days, yet the data file size has not changed. also, there are NO users to this database - it's new and has not been placed into production yet. I currently don't have any idea as to what happened - I'm looking into Lumigent's log explorer software now. Does anyone have an explanation as to why the log file would have increased 6000X in size, yet the data is not any larger ?

Thanks,

Unexplained Login Failures

Apr 12, 2004

Hi all,

I could really use some assistance. I have been researching this problem for over a month now and I have not made any headway or progress.

I am running SQL Server 2000 on Windows 2000 Server. Hardware is Dual Xeon 2.4/400 Procs, 2GB ram and 1 Raid10 Array with 4x 36 GB 10K RPM drives.

The server has about 50 dbs on it. All are primarly used in conjuction with some web application or site. On average the server sees about 270ish connections/sessions.

About 1 - 2 months ago, we started seeing random login failures. We have no explanation for these failures. Our coldfusion code gives us detailed logging information regarding the exact statement that was being executed when the login failed. We try to reproduce the failed login, we cannot. There are no misspelling, code inconsitencies in this regards because the logins are set in the data source which verify.

We are using per-processor licensing, so unless there is a hidden limit we are hitting or MS is lying about per-processor licensing having unlimmited connections, that is not the issue. Also, I've ruled out some kind of network issue because if that were the case, the login would have timed out, as opposed to failing. I've been running a trace and viewing the failed logins.

Has anyone dealt with this issue before?

Best Regards,

Errol Neal

Problem Saving/retrieving Unicode Characters NVARCHAR With Unicode Collation (java Jdbc)

Aug 8, 2006

I'm connecting to a SQL Server 2005 database using the latest (beta) sql server driver (Microsoft SQL Server 2005 JDBC Driver 1.1 CTP June 2006) from within Java (Rational Application Developer).

The table in SQL Server database has collation Latin1_General_CI_AS and one of the columns is a NVARCHAR with collation Indic_General_90_CI_AS. This should be a Unicode only collation. However when storing for instance the following String:

‚¬_£_ÙÚÜÛùúüû_ÅÆØåæøߣÇçÑñ_¼½¾_ЎўЄєÒ?Ò‘_прÑ?туф_ЂЉЊЋ
... it is saved with ? for all unicode characters as follows (when looking in the database):
‚¬_£_ÙÚÜÛùúüû_ÅÆØåæøߣÇçÑñ_¼½¾_??????_??????_????

The above is not correct, since all unicode characters should still be visible. When inserting the same string directly into the sql server database (without using Java) the result is ok.

Also when trying to retrieve the results again it complains about the following error within Java:

Codepage 0 is not supported by the Java environment.

Hopefully somebody has an answer for this problem. When I alter the collation of the NVARCHAR column to be Latin1_General_CI_AS as well, the data can be stored and retrieved however then of course the unicode specific characters are lost and results into ? So in that case the output is as described above (ie ‚¬_£_ÙÚÜÛùúüû_ÅÆØåæøߣÇçÑñ_¼½¾_??????_??????_????)

We would like to be able to persist and retrieve unicode characters in a SQL Server database using the correct JDBC Driver. We achieved this result already with an Oracle UTF8 database. But we need to be compliant with a SQL Server database as well. Please help.

Thanks in advance for your help.

SQL 2012 :: (SSIS) - Cannot Convert Between Unicode And Non-unicode Data Types

Sep 9, 2015

I have an SSIS package that pulls data from a MYSQL DB (Using RSSBus for Salesforce in SSIS to accomplish this). Most of the columns are loading properly, but I have many columns that I need to convert.

I have been using the Data Conversion dataflow task in SSIS to convert the rows.

I have 2 data conversions that work on most of the columns, but the DESCRIPTION column continues to return an error saying "Cannot convert between unicode and non-unicode types", regardless of what I choose on the Data Conversion task. So, basically I want to dump this column data into a SQL table with NVARCHAR datatypes. Here is what I am doing in my SSIS package...

1) Grab subset of data from SOURCE
2) Converts to TEXTSTREAM. (Data Conversion)
3) Converts to STRING. (Data Conversion)
4) Load Destination table. (OLE DB Destination)

I have also tried to simply convert the values to STRING, but that doesn't work either.

So, I have 2 Data Conversions working here that process most of the data correctly. What I can do to load the DESCRIPTION column?

SQL 2005 Unexplained Error When Opening Recordset Or Multiple Sets

Aug 12, 2007

To anyone that can help me

we have a application written in straight ASP, we recently upgraded our SQL database connecting to the application from SQL 2000 to 2005 here is the issue

currently SQL 2005 is located in our test and UAT environments, SQL 2005 is not clustered in either location. Now let me make it clear THIS PROBLEM IS NOT HAPPENING IN OUR TEST ENVIRONMENT, I REPEAT THIS PROBLEM IS NOT HAPPENING IN OUR TEST ENVIROMENT, THIS PROBLEM IS ONLY HAPPENING IN OUR UAT ENVIROMENT

Each enviroment is outfitted with the following SQL 2005 environment, Enterprise Edition SP1 with Cumlative hotfix package 2153 just the SISS fix ONLY

now the problem is this, we have a vb program located directly on the server that has SQL 2005 on it that VB program inserts a timestamp into a table inside the database, now how this happens is the program connects to the database and opens a recordset with a forwardonly cursor and inserts the timestamp

NOW THE EXACT PROBLEM IS THAT THE VB PROGRAM CANNOT OPEN MULTIPLE RECORDSETS, THE ERROR RECEIVED IS LABLED LIKE THIS

ODBC DRIVER ERROR 8000405 SHARED MEMORY SQL DOESNT EXIST OR ACCESSED DENIED,

NOW here is the interesting part, AGAIN THIS IS NOT HAPPENING IN OUR TEST ENVIRONMENT, THE VB PROGRAM AGAIN IS ON THE TEST SQL SERVER AND HAS A FORWARD ONLY CURSOR AND INSERTS JUST FINE

NOW IF I MOVE THE VB PROGRAM OUT OF OUR UAT ENVIRONMENT ONTO ANOTHER SERVER IT INSERTS THE RECORD ONTO SQL SERVER JUST FINE, IT OPENS THE RECORDSET AND OPERATES NORMALLY, BOTH SERVERS HAVE EXACT SAME PERMISSIONS

Can anyone help me understand whats happening here

One note, when we changed the cursortype from forward-only to keyset it worked fine but that doesnt explain things

why does it work in test so clearly what we did with changing the cursortype isnt the answer

Thanks please consider this a urgent request

SSIS: Unicode And Non-unicode String Data Types

May 14, 2008

Hi guys and gals,

I've had some great headaches with SSIS this morning, which I have managed to get a workarounds for, but I'm not happy with them so I've come to ask for advice.

Basically, I am exporting data from an SQL Server database into an Excel spreadsheet and hitting issues with unicode and non-unicode data types.

For example, I have a column that is char(6) and have added a data conversion step to the data flow, which converts it to type DT_WSTR and then everything works!

However, this seems like a completely un-neccessary step as I should be able to do the conversion in T-SQL - but no matter what I try I keep getting the same problem.

SELECT Cast(employee_number As nvarchar(255)) As [employee_number]
FROM employee
WHERE forename = 'george'

ErrorValidation error. details: 1 [1123]: Column "employee_number" cannot convert between unicode and non-unicode string data types.

I know I have a solution (read: workaround) but I really don't want to do this everytime!

Any suggestions for what else to try?

Integration Services :: Cannot Convert From Unicode To Non-unicode Error

May 7, 2009

For packages that I have created to read Oracle 10g tables, that work fine with debugging in 32-bit mode, I get an error message on all string fields when I try to run in 64-bit mode.  An example error message is:[OLE DB Source [1]] Error: Column "ACCT_UNIT" cannot convert between unicode and non-unicode string data types.Another interesting warning included is:[OLE DB Source [1]] Warning: The external columns for component "OLE DB Source" (1) are out of synchronization with the data source columns. The external column "ACCT_UNIT" needs to be updated.I cannot even try to convert this data with a Data Conversion item because the (red) error is on the OLE DB Source item and stops there.  It doesn't matter what the destination is or even if there is a destination in the package yet.I'm using Oracle Provider for OLE DB, Oracle Client version 10.203 for 32-bit and Oracle Client 10.204 for 64-bit.Oracle is 10g on a UNIX 64-bit server and the data is not unicode.I'm using SQL Server Enterprise 2008 (10.0.1600) on Windows Server 2008 Standard SP1 on a 64-bit server. The packages work fine in 32-bit mode and the data is not unicode data.  When I change Run64BitRuntime to True in the Debugging Property Page, I get the error on the OLE DB Source item.  I also get the error when I schedule a package to run using the SQL Server Agent.

Easier Way To Convert Non-Unicode To Unicode

Nov 8, 2006

I have built a large package and due to database changes (varchar to nvarchar) I need to do a data conversion of all the flat file columns I am bringing in, to a unicode data type. The way I know how to do this is via the data conversion component/task. My question is, I am looking for an easy way to "Do All Columns" and "Map all Columns" without doing every column by hand in both spots.

I need to change all the columns, can I do this in mass? More importantly once I convert all these and connect it to my data source it fails to map converted fields by name. Is there a way when using the data conversion task to still get it to map by name when connecting it to the OLE destination?

I know I can use the wizard to create the base package, but I have already built all the other components, renamed and set the data type and size on all the columns (over 300) and so I don't want to have to re-do all that work. What is the best solution?

In general I would be happy if I could get the post data conversion to map automatically to the source. But because its DataConversion.CustomerID it will not map to CustomerID field on destination. Any suggestions on the best way to do this would save me hours of work...

Thanks.

I need solid reasons except being cheaper than Sybase to show why we should use MS SQL Server

If anyone can share their experiences, it would be really great.

MS SQL 7.0 To Sybase Via Linked Server With OLE DB

Jul 5, 2001

We have created linked servers that connect to Sybase databases using the Sybase OLE DB provider and the Sybase ODBC provider.

The OLE DB provider does not allow the execution of a stored procedure. The message sounds like a permissions issue, but the id specified in the linked server has execute priv. for the stored procedure. It also does not allow the fully qualified name <server>.<db>.<owner>.<obj> to be used.

There are other issues with OLD DB and ODBC.

Anyone have any experiences making MS SQL to Sybase work smoothly?
