Union Query Or Some Other Way To Combine Fields And Text

Dec 28, 2007

The following query gets all the data I need except for one new field that I need which combines multiple fields and some text. Here is the query:

SELECT [Make Mods-Additions HERE].StockNumber AS ProductID, [Make Mods-Additions HERE].[Long Description], [Make Mods-Additions HERE].[Short Description], [Make Mods-Additions HERE].NEWwholeEachCost AS [Wholesale Each], [Make Mods-Additions HERE].Units, [Make Mods-Additions HERE].[Sale/CameoPrice] AS [Case Price], [Make Mods-Additions HERE].MinQty, [Make Mods-Additions HERE].Multiples, [Make Mods-Additions HERE].UPC, [Make Mods-Additions HERE].MSRP, [Make Mods-Additions HERE].[Availability Date], [Make Mods-Additions HERE].[Item Description (Detailed)] AS [Full Item Description]
FROM [Make Mods-Additions HERE]
WHERE ((([Make Mods-Additions HERE].Active)="YES"));

I need one more field named 'Rep Order Description' that concatenates the following:

[Short Description], "-$", [Wholesale Each], " ea, MSRP $', [MSRP]

It is important that the [Wholesale Each] and [MSRP] values are in 0.00 format (they are currency)

Example of output:
Short Description-$0.00 ea, MSRP $0.00

Combine Fields And Text In Select Statement

Jan 1, 2007

Is it possible to combine fields and text in a select statement?
In a dropDownList I want to show a combination of two different fields, and have the value of the selected item come from a third field. So, I thought I could maybe do something like this:
SELECT DISTINCT GRP AS GroupName, "Year: " + YEAR + "Grade: " + GRD AS ShowMe
FROM GE_Data
WHERE (DIST = @DIST)

I hoped that would take the values in YEAR and GRD and concatenate them with the other text. Then my dropDownList could show the ShowMe value and have the GroupName as the value it passes on. However, when I test this in the VS Query Builder, it says that Year and Grade are unknown column names and changes the double-quotes to square brackets.
If this is possible, or there's a better way to do it, I'd love some more info.
Thanks!

I have a couple columns in a table that have a data type of Text. In a query I need to concatenate these two columns into one result.

For example

Code:

However when I try this I get the error

How Can I Combine Three Fields Together Of Dif Datatypes

Oct 13, 2007

I want to combine three fields together as a description in a select statement. When I try using the & or + I'm told that the datatypes are incompatable. How can I join them?
(Item_Description is Nvarchar, Item_Cost is Money, Is_Active is bit)
Select Item_Description &' '& Item_Cost &' '& Is_Active As Description FROM tblItemList I tried Casting this but same incompatable message.
Select Item_Description &' '& CAST(Item_Cost AS NVARCHAR) &' '& CAST(Is_Active AS NVARCHAR) As Description FROM tblItemList
What I'm hoping to end up with is:
Brake Pedal, $36.00, True

Combine Records On Two Fields

Nov 5, 2007

Hello everyone -
This is my first post to the forum and I'm very new to SQL. I apologize if this is addressed elsewhere.

Here is an example of the results I am getting from my query

AdmissionID, sNurseInit, sSWInit
100, {NULL}, SAE
100, REG , {Null}

Is there a way to combine (merge, join? I don't know the right word) these records so that a single record for the admission is returned?

AdmissionID, sNurseInit, sSWInit
100, REG, SAE

Thanks in advance!
Amy

Combine Separate Date && Time Fields Into One Datetime Field?

Dec 26, 2006

Good morning.

I am importing an XLS file into one of my tables. The fields are:

Date Id Time IO

12/22/2006

9

12/22/2006
16
5:40:55 AM

12/22/2006
16
12:03:59 PM

When I do the import, I get the following:

Date Id Time IO
12/22/2006 12:00:00AM 2 12/30/1899 12:48:45 PM 2
12/22/2006 12:00:00AM 16 12/30/1899 5:40:55 AM 1
12/22/2006 12:00:00AM 16 12/30/1899 12:03:59 PM 2

Here are my doubts:

1. Is it be better to combine the Date & Time fields into one column? Advantages/Disadvantages?
2. If I don't combine them, should I use varchar or datetime data type?
2. What issues or problems might I have when I program SQL reports, if I leave the fields as they are?

Any comments or suggestions will be very much welcomed.

Cheers mates.

UNION With A Max On Split Date/Time Fields

Mar 30, 2000

I have 2 tables, each with one ID field, a separate
Date and Time fields and a number of other fields.
The tables contain duplicates on the ID field.
I want to do a UNION keeping only the record with the latest
Date and Time.

This would work:
SELECT MyTab.myKeyField, Max(MyTab.myDate) AS myDate
FROM (SELECT myKeyField, myDate
from Table1
union
SELECT myKeyField, myDate
from Table2) AS MyTab
GROUP BY MyTab.myKeyField

But is only taking care of Date, not Time (some records have
the same date but different times)
The other problem is, when I add more fields, I have to
include them in the GROUP BY clause, and this way I end up
with duplicates (because some other fields have different
values)

Is there a way to do this?

2, null, text2
3, null, text3
4, 3, text4

What i want to do is to combine c3 on row 3 and 4 so the output would look like this:

2, null, text2
3, null, text3

I have tried to use CASE with no luck.

edit:
output like this is also fine

2, null, text2
3, null, text3
4, 3, text4
5, null, text3 ext4

Adding A Full Text Search Across Multiple Tables (with Text Fields)

Sep 7, 2007

Hi, i'm trying to do a full text search on my site to add a weighting score to my results.  I have the following database structure:
Documents: - DocumentID (int, PK) - Title (varchar) - Content (text) - CategoryID (int, FK)
Categories: - CategoryID (int, PK) - CategoryName (varchar)
I need to create a full text index which searches the Title, Content and CategoryName fields.  I figured since i needed to search the CategoryName field i would create an indexed view.  I tried to execute the following query:
CREATE VIEW vw_DocumentsWITH SCHEMABINDING ASSELECT dbo.Documents.DocumentID, dbo.Documents.Title, dbo.Documents.[Content], dbo.Documents.CategoryID, dbo.Categories.CategoryNameFROM dbo.Categories INNER JOIN dbo.Documents ON dbo.Categories.CategoryID = dbo.Documents.CategoryID
GOCREATE UNIQUE CLUSTERED INDEX vw_DocumentsIndexON vw_Documents(DocumentID)
But this gave me the error:
Cannot create index on view 'dbname.dbo.vw_Documents'. It contains text, ntext, image or xml columns.
I tried converting the Content to a varchar(max) within my view but it still didn't like.
Appreciate if someone can tell me how this can be done as surely what i'm trying to do is not ground breaking.

Replace Text In Text, Char && Varchar Fields All At Once?

Jan 22, 2008

I have followed many tutorials on selecting and replacing text in text fields, varchar fields and char fields, but I have yet to find a single script that will to all 3 based on field type. Let's assume for a moment that I don't know where all in my database a certain value that I need changed resides ... i.e., the data's tablename and fieldname. How would I go about doing the following ... or more importantly, is this even possible in a SQL only procedure?1) Loop over entire database and get all user tables2) Loop over all user tables and get all fields3) Loop over all fields and determine the field type4) switch between field types and change a string of text from 'a' to 'b'Please be gentle, I'm a procedure newb.

How To Combine Two Tables (not Query)

Apr 6, 2005

I am new to SQL Server development, but I use the automated features in Enterprise Manager a lot.

I have a table with a specific format already existing in a SQL Server 2000 database. This is generated once a day from a flat file received from an outside vendor. I am now receiving a similar flat file from another vendor which is nearly identical, but with two differences.

First, the new flat file is missing two columns (not critical data).

Next, there is one column that is out of order in comparison to the other flat file (aside from the 2 missing columns).

I need a generic example of how to remove specific records from a table and add these new ones (from the new flat file) through the SQL Server. My intention is to have a job run at a specific time through the SQL Server.

Any help is appreciated. If you know of a good tutorial or something out there, I would be more than happy to check it out. Thank you so much for your help!

something like that? I was heard SQL2k has some new feature like this, or a UDF may be required? Currently, I have to use #temp table to get it.

so lets say I have

Text Fields In Sp_makewebtask

Mar 2, 1999

Hey everyone,

using SQL 6.5 sp_makewebtask in a stored procedure I want to create a
press-info file.
My query calls four fields, a datum field, two varchar fields and a text
field, it's
the field "PrText" in my example:

EXEC sp_makewebtask @outputfile='F:EntwicklungRedaktionZeitwenden27.ht m',
@query='SELECT Datum, Ort, Headline, PrText
FROM news
WHERE ID = 27',
@templatefile='F:EntwicklungRedaktionZeitwendenTem plates.htm'

My question: Am I limited to 255 characters in this case? After 255
characters the text is cut off and
I have only a truncated text fragment.

Is there a possibility to get the whole text without using @blobfmt (I don't
want to use this parameter because
I want to have the datum data, the varchar headline AND the text in ONE
HTML-file.)

I have tried the same as dynamic query in ASP where I have no problem to get
the whole content of the text field, but I want
to create a static file because this information will be read often, but
won't be updated frequently
and I don't want to charge the server resources to much.

Has anybody an idea? Any help would be appreciated.

Thank You

Dorothee Wiethoff

SQL Server Text Fields

Mar 16, 2006

The Text datatype can hold several million characters
The size of a record can be no more than 8 KB in normal data.

Created a table with one text field. For some reason can only store 1K of data into it. Even if the 8K limit was a factor (which it shouldn't for a text field) I cannot add more than 1K of data into my text field. 1023 characters to be exact.

Why is SQL Server 2000 doing this and more importantly how to resolve?
