Updating My View Changes My View Content

Feb 17, 2006

I have this view in SQL server:

CREATE VIEW dbo.vwFeat
AS
SELECT dbo.Lk_Feat.Descr, dbo.Lk_Feat.Price, dbo.Lk_Feat.Code, dbo.SubFeat.SubNmbr
FROM dbo.Lk_Feat INNER JOIN
dbo.SubFeat ON dbo.Lk_Feat.Idf = dbo.SubFeat.Idt

When ever I open using SQL Entreprise manager to edit it by adding or removing a field i inserts Expr1,2.. and I don t want that. The result I get is:

SELECT dbo.Lk_Feat.Descr AS Expr1, dbo.Lk_Feat.Price AS Expr2, dbo.Lk_Feat.Code AS Expr3, dbo.SubFeat.SubNmbr AS Expr4
FROM dbo.Lk_Feat INNER JOIN
dbo.SubFeat ON dbo.Lk_Feat.Idf = dbo.SubFeat.Idt

I don t want Entreprise manager to generate the Expr fields since I use the real fields in my application.
Thanks for help

Updating A View

Feb 3, 2004

I don't know if this is possible but, I have a view that retrieves data between 2 dates. The data is then exported to an Excel spreadsheet. My question is this: Is there some way I can automatically change the date in my alter view window? For example, I want to extract the data at the beginning of each month for the previous month. Then whoever is looking at the data can then refresh every month to get the previous months data. I want something that will automatically update my view every month with the previous month, without me having to go in and physically doing it. Is there a way, and how complicated would it be?
Thanks.

Problem Unicode Data 0x2300 In SQLServer 2000 SQLServer 2005 Express

Sep 20, 2006

Hi experts;
I have a problem with unicode character 0x2300
I created this table
create table testunicode (Bez nchar(128))

Insert Data
insert into testunicode (Bez)values('Œ€„’')
with 2 Unicode characters
Œ€ = 0x2300
„’ = 0x2122

Selecting the data
select Bez from testunicode
I see
"?„’"

„’ = 0x2122 is ok but instead of 0x2300 there is 0x3f

When I modify the insert statement like that ( 8960 = 0x2300 )
insert into testunicode (Bez)values(NCHAR(8960)+'„’')

and select again voila i see
"Œ€„’"
Does anyone have an idea?

Thanks

Trying To 'load' A Copy Of A SQLServer 2000 Database To SQLServer 2005 Express

Apr 18, 2008

I am trying to 'load' a copy of a SQLServer 2000 database to SQLServer 2005 Express (on another host). The copy was provided by someone else - it came to me as a MDF file only, no LDF file.

I have tried to Attach the database and it fails with a failure to load the LDF. Is there any way to bypass this issue without the LDF or do I have to have that?

The provider of the database says I can create a new database and just point to the MDF as the data source but I can't seem to find a way to do that? I am using SQL Server Management Studio Express.

Thanks!!

I have a database that has SQL 2000 as the engine and Access 2003 on the front end, we scan our documents and hyperlink them through Access, the address is stored in SQL Server but we are wanting to move SQL, the scanned documents along witht he ADP over to a different server so instead of the files linking to \gcfso1 they will link to \gcfsql. is there a way to update the address link in SqL to link to \gcfsql as an update view rather then relinking them by hand????

Updating Across A Partitioned View

Mar 7, 2012

This post concerns updating across a partitioned view, and not unlike others about this subject I am getting this error:

Msg 4436, Level 16, State 12, Line 1
UNION ALL view 'dbII.dbo.MyTable' is not updatable because a partitioning column was not found.

I am aware of the rules for defining a partitioning column, but interpreting them may have beaten me. So perhaps I haven't abided by all the rules. How to spot which one(s) from the view and table definitions? I suspect the CHECK constraint does not allow the ASCII function, but I can't see how to avoid using it given SYSCODE entries in one table are like "[A-Z]%" and in the other are like "[0-9]%".

Otherwise, I suspect it is because one of the tables has, by legacy, a text column and the view is casting it to varchar(MAX). I also suspect it is because there's a second column with a unique index. These aren't mentioned in the rules (are they?).

Here's the view definition:

SELECT SYSCODE, COL2, CAST(COMMENTS AS varchar(MAX)) AS COMMENTS
FROM dbo.MYTABLE
UNION ALL
SELECT SYSCODE, COL2, COMMENTS
FROM OTHERDATABASE.dbo.MYTABLE AS MYTABLE_1

And here are the table definitions:

-- Table in the database where view is defined
CREATE TABLE [dbo].[MYTABLE](
[SYSCODE] [char](12) NOT NULL,

[Code]....

Replacing Sqlserver 2000 With Sqlserver 2005 Express

Jun 14, 2006

I have an app that uses a sqlserver 2000 jdbc driver to connect to a sqlserver 2000.

Is it possible to do a direct replacement of sqlserver 2000 with sqlserver 2005 express just by reconfiguring the app to point to the express? The app would still be using the sqlserver 2000 jdbc driver to try and make the connection.

If that is a possibility, what can be some differences in the configuration? Previously with 2000 the config information I entered is:

server name: "machinename"( or ip). I've also tried "machiname/SQLEXPRESS"

DB name: name of db instance

port: 1433(default)

user and pass.

My attempts so far results in

"java.sql.SQLException: [Microsoft][SQLServer 2000 Driver for JDBC]Error establishing socket."

and

"java.sql.SQLException: [Microsoft][SQLServer 2000 Driver for JDBC]Unable to connect. Invalid URL."

Updating A View Through A Stored Procedure.

Hi i have a page in which a user fills out info on a page, the problem i am getting is that when the save button is clicked all text box values apart from one are saving to the database this field is the "constructor_ID" field. However, when I declare a cursor on this partitioned view and try to update the view using WHERE CURRENT OF, I get an error saying 'The target object type is not updatable through a cursor'. Does anyone know if it's the case that updating a partitioned view through cursor is not supported in SQL Server 2000?

View Not Updating With Table Schema Changes

Jan 16, 2004

I notice that when I change my table schema, the view that was created based on the older schema remains using the older schema, and when I try running it, it will give me error.

I assume that's because the view is still using the old execution plan? Is there a way to force an automatic recompilation of execution plans for all views when there is a change to the underlying table?

Thanks!

Updating Grid View That Has Dropdown Lists

Jun 28, 2007

I have gridview bound with SqlDataSource control. One of the grid columns is a dropdown list which is populated programatically, (the gridview has template column with edittemplate field with dropdown list), dropdown Value contains of course collection of IDs.Please tell me how to declare UpdateCommand which will update the row with the dropdown list. The problem is with parameter regarding the column with dropdown list. When i declare this parameter and bind it to SelectedValue property of the dropdownlist from edittemplate tag - it doesnt work, because datasource control cannot see this dropdown list. So, how am i supposed to declare the ID of the row being updated in <updateParameters>? Thanks in advance!

SQLSERVER 2005 X64 Linked Server To SQLSERVER 7.0

Jun 20, 2007

Hello people.

I am in the process of planning a server upgrade to sql2005 x64.

I created 2 linked servers: one to a SQL2000 sp4 server and one to a SQL7.0 SP3.

I have the following error when I query the linked servers.
OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "IVDM2K" returned message "Unspecified error".
OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "IVDM2K" returned message "The stored procedure required to complete this operation could not be found on the server. Please contact your system administrator.".
Msg 7311, Level 16, State 2, Line 1
Cannot obtain the schema rowset "DBSCHEMA_TABLES_INFO" for OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "IVDM2K". The provider supports the interface, but returns a failure code when it is used.

I am aware of KB 906954.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;906954

I applied the instcat.sql on the SQL2000SP4 server and my linked server issues for that one are gone.

However, I ran the instcat.sql script on the SQL7.0 sp3 server and the linked server is still giving me an issue.

Can someone help me find a solution to this?

View Not Working SQLSERVER 2000

Jul 20, 2005

Hi allWe have some tables with a couple of layers of very simple views built ontop. In the table are maybe 6 columns and about 15000 records. The firstview cobines the data in the table with some other data from a lookuptable. The second view does some sorting on the first view using certaindates . They have worked fine for well over a year now.Until this morning that is... the views stopped returning the full set ofresults- even the very simple one that sits just above the table. The viewreturned the core of the data from the main table, but nothing from thelookup table. In order to get them to work we had to delete each view (using access frontend to do this), and then recreate it with exactly the same SQL text. I amguessing this causes SQL Server to recompile it. As soon as view 1 had beenrecreated it worked, but view 2 still failed, again rebuilding view 2 itstarted working. The only thing I can think of is that this morning I added 2 new fields tothe base table, but I'm sure I've done this before without any (noticable)problems.any thoughts as to why it happened would be welcome, I am a bit nervousnow...thanksAndy

Updating A SQL 2005 DB With Info From FreeTextbox

Feb 14, 2006

Hi,I'm writing a very simple content management site as a first web project. The info is being entered in a FreeTextBox ID'd as FreeTextBox2.  When I use an UPDATE command to update the SQL record it inserts a NULL value into the record.  If I change the variable to simple text it inserts it properly.  For example, this inserts Test into the record:         UpdateCommand="DECLARE @FreeTextBox2 as varChar(100)         UPDATE t_content          SET PageContent = 'Test' WHERE PageID = 1">But when I run this statement it inserts a NULL:         UpdateCommand="DECLARE @FreeTextBox2 as varChar(100)
         UPDATE t_content
SET PageContent = @FreeTextBox2 WHERE PageID = 1">Could someone please point out where I'm going wrong?  Thx :)

We're currently undertaking the development of our first SQL Server 2005 database and we've stumbled across a problem with our method of deployment from Development through System Test, UAT and, finally, to Production.

Under SQL Server 2000 we would build a new database in Development and assign permissions to a specific database user which was linked to an appropriate Windows Login - the whole build process was scripted. We would then hand the mdf and ldf files over to the Operations team who would attach the database to the System Test server, create a new Windows Login (appropriate for the environment), then run a script which would update the SID stored against the database user to the SID of the appropriate login.

e.g.

Database user (consistent through all environments) = AppDAL

Development: Windows Login = DOMAINAppDEVDAL

System Test: Windows Login = DOMAINAppSYSDAL

UAT: Windows Login = DOMAINAppUATDAL

Production: Windows Login = DOMAINAppLIVEDAL

The script, which directly updates the dbo.sysusers table in SQL 2000, links the AppDAL user to the appropriate Windows Login.

Is there any way to perform this task under SQL Server 2005? I'm aware of the sp_change_users_login stored proc, however this only works for SQL Server logins and not Windows logins. Also I'm aware that direct updates to system tables are not allowed under SQL Server 2005 and were not recommended under SQL Server 2000 so we were actually using an unsupported method during deployment. My guess is that we will have to change our method of deployment and rely on the Operations team to build the database in each enviroment from scripts, however I was wondering if there is another way before we go ahead.

Interestingly SQL Server 2005's sp_change_users_login stored proc contains SQL that does not run outside of the stored proc:

EXEC %%UserOrGroup(Name = @UserNamePattern).SetSID(SID = @loginsid, IsExternal = 0, IsGroup = 0)

SQL Server 2005 will not allow creation of a new stored proc that contains this SQL, wrapping the code in EXEC('') causes an error during runtime.

Is anyone familiar with the above syntax? Searching on Google has been fruitless.

Thanks

Chris

Performance Problems After Updating To SQL Server 2005

May 3, 2007

We have updated to SQL Server 2005, let€™s say, in a hurry without thinking or testing. Databases were attached to the new instance of SQL Server 2005. It looked great when I tested it alone but then a new day come and as all users logged into the system we had got a big problem. The response times are very long and users receive time out errors all the time.

A little background:

The instance of SQL Server 2005 is installed on the same server as 2000 was installed on. 2000 has been uninstalled. It is a Xenon 3.2 GHz with 2GB RAM and SCSI raid. Data and logs are on different spins.

Application is an old ASP code and some parts are not optimized at all. But it worked fine on SQL Server 2000.

What could be the problem?

I really don€™t want to downgrade to SQL Server 2000.

When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections.
