Is there any tool for data dictionary? Basically there are no
descriptions/comments to many of the columns (about 99%) in the database. Datawarehouse team does not know exactly what those columns are, where its used, how its used. No comments have been defined in the system tables. We would like to have a tool where SME's/Bussiness analysts enter the description for the columns in the production database. We have SQL Server databases, many oracle dbs, few sybase databases, ACCESS. Sometimes we might have to search for strings in the descriptions entered.

I need to build a data dictionary for a SQL 7 DB that already exists that has over 16000 columns. What I really need is to add a comment to the table and column names.We use ERWin and have looked at the Microsoft Repository
but I would like a quick interface to create the descriptions which neither one of these have. I scripted out all the table and column objects into tables and built a simple Access Form to handle the updates. Now I need to
commite these updates to the Microsoft Repository. Has anyone seen or tried something like this?
THanks

I am adding tables to a DB. I want to put table and column descriptions in as I go.
1. Is there a "Description" property for the table? I see in the column properties list a "description".
2. Once I have my descriptions all in, indexes set etc, is there a system stored procedure that I can run that will generate the data dictionay? (With a table description.)
Thanks

Hi ,all here,
Would please anyone here give me any guidance and advices for best practice of data dictionary in SQL Server 2005?
I have restored a large insurance claims database with up to more than 300 tables, massively, most of them are empty tables, many of them dont have any keys, contrains, indexes, and more difficult, there is no any data dictionary for the database which gets me stuck in the understanding of the data at the moment. Thus I think data dictionary is very important for a database.
Will anyone gives me advices for that? Really need help.
Thank you very much in advance for any help.
With best regards,
Yours sincerely,

Hi,
I'm thinking of implementing a rudimentary Data Dictionary for a database using extended properties to store table and column descriptions.
Does having this information for every table and column in a database (200 tables; 2000 columns) cause any (negative) impact on database performance? I'm guessing it shouldn't but want to make sure before implementing this in the production environment.
Thanks,
Smitha

I've been struggling with this for about 2 weeks now and can't seem to get any further.I have two tables: orders and orders_extended. They can be joined by the common orderid field (example SELECT * FROM orders JOIN orders_extended ON orders.order = orders_extended.orderid WHERE 1=1)I need to create a report that sums the following fields:
SELECT
CONVERT(VARCHAR(12), orderdate, 101) As orderdate
, COALESCE (
CASE WHEN orders_extended.productprice < 0 THEN 'DISCOUNT' ELSE orders_extended.productnumber END
, CASE WHEN orders_extended.productnumber LIKE '%AB%' THEN 'PRODUCTGROUPAB' ELSE orders_extended.productnumber END
, CASE WHEN orders_extended.productnumber LIKE '%CD%' THEN 'PRODUCTGROUPCD' ELSE NULL END
[code]...
What I'm trying to accomplish is to get the total dolloar amount of sales for each day for each payment type on one line per productgroup.

Hello (sorry my bad english, im brazilian)
I was using Visual Studio 2003 and SQL Server CE 2.0 for C# mobile applications. The .sdf database were created in the emulator or in the mobile device itself using Query Analizer.
The application developed need some initial data to run, and this data is obtained executing one service that reads a postgree database, and insert the data in the SQL CE database of the mobile device. But, given the size of the database (maybe 10.000 rows), it tooks too much time (sometimes 6 hours).
Now we are migrating to Visual Studio 2005 and SQL Server 2005 Mobile Edition.
I want to know if its possible to create the .sdf database and load the data into this database on the desktop. Maybe through the execution of a .sql script, or through a service executed on the desktop.
After this, its just upload de .sdf file to the mobile device.
Thanks

We are using SQL Server 2014 and SSDT-BI 2013. We have a reporting environment where business users create objects which need to be persisted for fiscal year reporting. Let's say for instance SQLSERVER1SRVR1 they create table objects like below in the reporting environment.
Accounting2014, Accounting2015 in AccountingDB;Â
Sales2014, Sales2015 in SalesDB;Â
Products2014, Products2015 in ProductsDB;Â
Inventory2014, Inventory2015 in InventoryDB etc....
These tables are persisted for auditing in a different environment SQLSERVER2SRVR2 for finance & audit folks.We would want to automate this process using SSIS to create tables in corresponding database and load data. I tried using For Each Loop container but the catch is I could loop the source or destination but how do we loop on Source & Destination at the same time (i.e when source is in AccountingDB destination to be AccountingDB, source SalesDB then destination SalesDB so on etc....

Hi all,
I use the following 3 sets of sql code in SQL Server Management Studio Express (SSMSE) to import the csv data/files to 3 dbo.Tables via CREATE TABLE & BUKL INSERT operations:
-- ImportCSVprojects.sql --
USE ChemDatabase
GO
CREATE TABLE Projects
(
ProjectID int,
ProjectName nvarchar(25),
LabName nvarchar(25)
);
BULK INSERT dbo.Projects
FROM 'c:myfileProjects.csv'
WITH
(
FIELDTERMINATOR = ',',
ROWTERMINATOR = ''
)
GO
=======================================
-- ImportCSVsamples.sql --
USE ChemDatabase
GO
CREATE TABLE Samples
(
SampleID int,
SampleName nvarchar(25),
Matrix nvarchar(25),
SampleType nvarchar(25),
ChemGroup nvarchar(25),
ProjectID int
);
BULK INSERT dbo.Samples
FROM 'c:myfileSamples.csv'
WITH
(
FIELDTERMINATOR = ',',
ROWTERMINATOR = ''
)
GO
=========================================
-- ImportCSVtestResult.sql --
USE ChemDatabase
GO
CREATE TABLE TestResults
(
AnalyteID int,
AnalyteName nvarchar(25),
Result decimal(9,3),
UnitForConc nvarchar(25),
SampleID int
);
BULK INSERT dbo.TestResults
FROM 'c:myfileLabTests.csv'
WITH
(
FIELDTERMINATOR = ',',
ROWTERMINATOR = ''
)
GO
========================================
The 3 csv files were successfully imported into the ChemDatabase of my SSMSE.
2 questions to ask:
(1) How can I designate the Primary and Foreign Keys to these 3 dbo Tables?
Should I do this "designate" thing after the 3 dbo Tables are done or during the "Importing" period?
(2) How can I set up the relationships among these 3 dbo Tables?
Please help and advise.
Thanks in advance,

I'm developing a report which contains a number of matrixes which are ordered in a hierarchy which can be navigated using a document map. One of the matrixes contains a subreport containing a table which displays a description for the matrix and the corresponding document map label. This is working without problem already in the production environment.
Recently, after updating my machine with numerous updates and patches, this stopped functioning. I now receive the error message, "The given key was not present in the dictionary" when I run this subreport, either as part of the greater report or on its own.
I have seen the posting which recommends deleting the report.rdl.data files. This did not solve the issue.
The data and the dataset are both in sync. When I click the "Print layout" button when previewing the report in Visual Studio .Net 2005, I can view the data. This looks like a bug in the VS.NET 2005 report designer.
I am running SQL Server 2005 SP2.
Any help is appreciated.

Bill Mueller

Hello all,
Being still a relative newcomer to SQL Server (people may say I'm trying to take on too much being somewhat inexperienced once they read about the problem I'm trying to tackle, but alas...) I'm running into the following problem: I need to create tables in my user database on the fly (using Stored Procedures) so that each table can be created many times in the database but only once for every user. The tables should be named something like "username.Table1", "username.Table2" etc. as opposed to "dbo.Table1". I then want to use the stored procedure from .NET/C# in my web application, so that i can create the complete set of usertables for each of my clients.
Now, I tackled the stored procedure part (that is, it creates all the tables I need with all the parameters I want) and am able to use it from my web application (which took some time to learn but proved quite easy to do), but I cannot seem to get it coupled to the current user (instead of the dbo). Every time I trie, the tables are created as dbo.Table1 and when I try to create a new set, it gives a warning ("table with name such and so already exists..."). I made sure to log in as an authenticated user (using forms authentication) before trying to create the tables but this gives the aforementioned result.
What am I doing wrong? I use Visual Web Developer Express, SQL Server 2005 Express and IIS version 5.1
Please help :-D
Greetingz,
DJ Roelfsema

I need to sort my data more than just order it using Order by clause.
I need the, to appear so that they are sorted like in dictionary's order.
example: if I have 0.1 and 0.2 and 0.11
They need to be ordered into 0.1 then 0.11. then 2.0. etc.
I thought I could use Val() function but it wasn't a successful attempt. Anyone can help me please?
I'm using ColdFusion and this is one of the query :
<cfparam name="sort" default="goal_cd">
<cfquery name="GetTheme" datasource="#application.OUSDSN#">
Select goal.*,theme.*
From goal,Theme
Where goal_theme_id = theme_id
Order by #sort#
<cfif sort is "goal_cd">
Order by Val(#sort#) <--------------------- This doesn't work!!!

Hi there,
I have a search page that redirects to another page transfering the search terms in a querystring. In the page to display the search results I use SQL parameters to show the results. Everything runs fine until I do a page refresh or use paging to bring up another set of results.

I currently have a udf written in T-SQL that's getting way too logically complicated!
It€™s typically accessed like this:
SELECT PartNumber,dbo.PartPrice(Manufacturer, Model, AssemblageInfo, Version, CustomerDiscountLevel) FROM WorkOrders where OrderNumber=123456
The udf does some complicated manipulations on the parameters and eventually does a SELECT on a lookup table and returns the result.
If I make this a managed code udf, the logic gets much simpler to write (great!).
But, my question is:
Can I take the lookup table and embed it in the udf--so the udf doesn't have to go to the database to do the lookup?
Would I do that in a STATIC dictionary<>?
Is it wise to keep the info statically?
The lookup table consists of 3600(+/-) elements and changes exactly once a month.
The SELECT statement using the udf typically returns several thousand rows.
The SELECT is done often.

Hello all,
Please help....
I have a text file which needs to be created into a table (let's call it DataFile table). For now I'm just doing the manual DTS to import the txt into SQL server to create the table, which works. But here's my problem....
I need to extract data from DataFile table, here's my query:
select * from dbo.DataFile
where DF_SC_Case_Nbr not like '0000%';
Then I need to create a new table for the extracted data, let's call it ExtractedDataFile. But I don't know how to create a new table and insert the data I selected above into the new one.
Also, can the extraction and the creation of new table be done in just one stored procedure? or is there any other way of doing all this (including the importation of the text file)?
Any help would be highly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

I have a table that I am basically reduplicating a couple of times for each part of this database that I want to create.Each table basically has the same data: The tables will be called motherTable, fatherTable, sonTable, daughterTable and so on.I am pretty much using the following in each column: UserID, MotherID(or FatherID or SonID, etc., etc. and so on for each unique table), FirstName, LastName, MiddleName, BirthPlace, Photo, Age.I don't see an option to copy a table and just modify the second ID part and rename that table accordingly.How can I make this an easier way of creating these similar tables without retyping all these columns over and over again?Thanks in advance.
