User Provisioning Tool For Vista (creating System Admin Accounts

Apr 8, 2008

I am reading kb 934164. I am confused about (creating system administrator) domain user accounts....
IN SQL 2005 USER PROVISIONING Tools
under kb934164 8e type a window account by the following format
domain/user 8k Type a windows account by following format domain/user
DO I simply type domain/user or do I actually Type my domain/user account
What is domain user?
In other words where does domain (PASSWORD) come from?
where does user(PASSWORD) come from?
I have being trying to find the answer for this
Is there anything else I need to be prepared for in user
provisioning. By the way do you need to turn off uac in vista while installing
sql 2005....Thanks Is there any examples of this? I just want to get it right....

User Provisioning Tool For Vista

Feb 23, 2007

Hi!

I have installed SQL Server 2005 Enterprise on Windows Vista Business. Then, I have installed SP2 of SQL Server. In the "User Provisioning Tool for Vista" the "Available privileges" list is empty, but I am administrator of the machine. So, I'm unable to connect to the Database Engine via the Management Studio. What is the problem?

Thanks in advance.

Unable To Find / Start SQL Services Or Add Vista User Into Admin Role

Apr 23, 2007

Sorry if this is a simple question, I've not seen any similar posts.

I'm just finished installed SQL 2005 on Vista Business edition (first time for both). I subsequently installed SP2 for 2005.

Upon completing the SP2 installation, the SQL Server Surface Area Configuration manager opened asking me to grant admin rights to the account I used to install the software. The account I used is the local admin account on the machine (only account on the machine as this is my dev box) .

Nothing shows in the two boxes below on this dialog, "Available Privelages" is blank and "Privelages granted is blank".

In addition, if I go to SQL Server Configuration Manager, and click on SQL Server 2005 Services, nothing shows in the right pain. It's as if the software installed, and yet no instance of the database exists or is running.

My thought was that the admin account I used to install the software doesn't have sufficient privelages to to start the SQL Server or SQLBrowser. So I went to computer management, Local Users and groups (machine isn't on a network yet), and made sure this same account is part of the administrators group.

Any ideas on how I should solve this?

SQL Server 2005 Express User Provisioning.

Apr 18, 2008

This forum is unbelievably huge, so i have no idea if this is the right place to post this...

I have an ASP.NET application, which is part of a work based project. I am developing in Visual Web Developer and my database is SQL 2005 Express (SP2). I cannot get the database to log in.

This is because my account is not an admin, as Vista disables SQL Admin rights by default...

So the Surface Area Configuration tool has the "Add New Administrator" tool.

I go to use it, it shows me the list on the left, i hit the button to shift it across to the right, sure enough, no problems. I hit OK. It does nothing. This is on Vista, on an Adminitrator account with all prieveleges. I have tried it with UAC turned on and turned off.

No matter what i do, it doesnt give me the rights. If i open the SQLProv tool again, all the list has shifted back into the left panel, as if the form never submitted.

The tool gives me no errors or alerts.

What am i doing wrong?

PS: I can definitely connect into the database.

Service Accounts, Local Admin, And Sysadmin Question!

Oct 2, 2007

Hi,

Re: SQL Server 2005

We have defined a local administrator to be the SQL Server and SQL Server Agent services user, and is also the job step owner for some SSIS packages I am running.

My question is, isn't by default a local administrator ALSO granted sysadmin in SQL Server? According to this link, it seems to imply this:

http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143504.aspx

However, I am having some permissions problems with the local adminstrator account (i.e. SQL Server agent account) when it runs the job. The error is that it doesn't have execute permissions on sp_dts_addlogentry.

How can this be, if it's granted sysadmin?

Thanks

SQL Web Admin Tool

Mar 4, 2004

Hi,

I've been having trouble getting this tool to work with my server/database. I'm using XP Pro, MSDE, .NET 1.1.4322 and IIS 5.1. IIS has been installed and tested with the help of others. .asp pages are being served locally and to another PC on the network. No obvious problem here. When I installed MSDE I used the SAPWD='strongpassword" command to create a password. I also built a new database. I had positive feedback on both of these actions.

Now to the tool - when I activate the administrator it pops with the little window saying Web Server Configuration. It lists the following options:

Desired Port:
IIS
Cassini Personal Web Server
Restore Faults

and Start and Stop buttons.

If I leave the setting on IIS and click Start it opens a webpage entitled Web Data Administrator. Moving further down I have a welcome message and then the line -

Please enter a SQL Server name:

Username: [Desktopob shadowed entry]
Password
Server (local)

Authentication Method:

Windows Intergrated
SQl Login

and then a Login button

If I select SQL Login and enter "sa" as the username and then my password leaving (local) as the server I get the following error:

Invalid username and/or password, you are using a windows login that is not your own, or server does not exist.

I have tried all combination of \desktopsa, sa, you name it. The password I selected is correct because I made a point of writing it down so I wouldn't forget it. I have also tried all the combos using Cassini as well.

This is where I'm stuck at this point. All suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks,
Bob

Unattended Express Upgrade Changes Service Accounts To Local System

Jan 7, 2008

Hi There

I am doing an unattended upgrade of Sql Express with Advanced Services SP1.
Before the upgrade the services run under domain accounts.
I use the following command :

start /wait setup UPGRADE=SQL_Engine INSTANCENAME=MSSQLSERVER SQLACCOUNT=DOMAINUser SQLPASSWORD=p@ssw0rd ADDLOCAL=Client_Components,SQL_SSMSEE /qn

However after the ugrade the service accounts are running under local system.

Documentation is unclear, i find the following:

; The services for SQL Server and Analysis Server are set auto start. To use the *ACCOUNT settings
; make sure to specify the DOMAIN, e.g. SQLACCOUNT=DOMAINNAMEACCOUNT
; NOTE: When installing SQL_Engine 3 accounts are REQUIRED: SQLACCOUNT, AGTACCOUNT and SQLBROWSERACCOUNT.
; SQLACCOUNT Examples:
; SQLACCOUNT=<domainuser>
; SQLACCOUNT="NT AUTHORITYSYSTEM"
; SQLACCOUNT="NT AUTHORITYNETWORK SERVICE"
; SQLACCOUNT="NT AUTHORITYLOCAL SERVICE"

To my knowledge the <> is not required.
Can someone please help as i cannot get the services accounts to run under a domain user after upgrade.

Thanx

Login And Web Admin Tool

Oct 4, 2006

I've been trying to get my website back up and running, I lost the db and will have to reconstruct that but in the meantime I would like to get the website back in operation right now I have the following problems.

I receive an error message when trying to create a new user in the web admin tool. see 1A
or I receive another error message  saying that the administrator is not authorized to sign onto the db
and I seem to have the authorization settings incorrect for the hashed password settings I had...

Ive looked back through my notes and the last time this happened I created a new database with the web admin tool but my settings are such that this still doesn't eliminate the error messages.  Right now the website is in a cannot find server mode.

Thanks for your help.

Debbie

Problems With Creating SQL Server Accounts With SQL Express Edition

Jul 17, 2006

I installed Visual Web Developer on my laptop running on Windows XP Professional (SP2). With this SQL server express edition too got installed. Then I installed SQL server management studio express to manage the databases

I used “windows authentication to login the SQL server for the first time. Then I found sa password is already there. I was never given the opportunity to set this sa password during the installation. I tired to change it to my own password but I found that it’s not accepting any changes.

Then I tired to create a SQL server account and try to login. I was not allowed. Then through MSDN I got to know that Express Edition does not support mixed mode authentication by default but I have to select that during the installation. But the problem is I was never given the opportunity to select this authentication mode during the install ion.

I tired changing the registry values ( set LoginMode to ‘2) as instructed in the MSDN to allowe mixed mode. Even after that still I’m not allowed to create sql server accounts with my own passwords. I’m allowed to create accounts but it doesn’t allow me to set the password; every time I check it had replace the password I set to some unknown password which I cannot see due to masking.

Can anyone offer me some advice to understand what’s happening?

Orphaned User Accounts When Restoring

Dec 29, 1999

I am copying a database to an alternate server by restoring a full backup onto the new server. However, whether I create the logins prior to the restoration or not the user accounts in the database no longer map to logins in the master.

Unfortunately it is not simply a case of dropping the acounts as they own objects in the database.

My best solution to date has been to use the sp_addalias to alias logins of the same name to the original user. However this is a far from ideal situation as one cannot readily tell that the logins are aliased and there must be an additional overhead in doing this.

Copying/Moving User Accounts...how?

Sep 27, 2006

Ok. So we just moved over one DB from our original server to another server. The DB copied over fine.

Our next step is trying to see if there is a way to move accounts. Is that possible?

We have about 40 accounts (using SQL authentication) on the original server. Is there a way to move or copy those accounts to the new SQL server that is holding that same DB?

Haven't found anything in the Enterprise manager, so im thinking it will be something to do in the SQL analyzer.

My lack of knowledge in SQL is not helping me much here.

I appreciate the help.

SQL Server 2005 Setup Of 2 Vista Machines, Can't Get Individual Network Login Accounts To Work On Each Others SQL Server

Apr 16, 2008

Hello all,

I have 2 networked PC's both running vista ultimate

1st is Laptop and is running its own SQL Server at laptoplaptopSQL
2nd is Desktop and is running its own SQL Server at desktopdesktopSQL

Now both machines have seperate windows login accounts.

When I go SQL Server management studio I go to browse and each machine can see the other machines SQL Server, but when I go to login I get SQL Login falied for users" The user is not associaed with a trusted SQL server connection".

So I then go to logins new login and try to add my other pc's user account.
The problem I see is that when I go to search and then location it only shows its own PC's location and not the location of my other networked pc? So if I am on Desktop and in my theory want to add laptopuser to the desktop SQL Server logins I get:

"create failed for login laptopuser

An exception occurred while executing Transact SQL statement laptopuser is not a valid windows NT name. give the complete name

Not sure on where to go from here.

Any help would be great

Service User Accounts, Mapped Drives, Backups Question

Jun 26, 2007

This has been extremely confusing for me.

I want to just make a simple backup.

first of all when i choose the pick a folder to backup, no mapped drives I make are even THERE.

I realize this is probably related to the account being used, okay I thought let me change the user account to a network admin account... I still cannot see the drive.

Can't this thing just accept whatever I tell it to access like any other program??

You would think they would at least keep the standard Open File dialog so we can use the network browser or something...

I've changed my accounts all to NETWORK SERVICE, then LOCAL SYSTEM, then a DOMAIN ADMIN...

I can't get this to work correctly on this freshly installed server... can someone please help?

I'm at the point where I don't care if i have to just re-install the damn thing...

Just someone please tell me what to pick for the accounts.

Bonus: I have this same issue with reporting services and Services for Unix NFS Mapped drives.

How can I map a drive with NETWORK SERVICE Credentials so it finds the datasource path?

I've only been able to do something like this with psexec and Local System.

When logged in as Domain Admin it will show a disconnected network drive that you cant get rid of but system account can use.
