Using Top To Get Set Number Of Results From A Union

Jan 30, 2008

I would like to get the top 5000 records from a union. The oringinal query is

SELECT * from tbl_A WHERE fld_Id = 0
UNION ALL
SELECT * from tbl_B where fld_Id = 0

I thought that the I could do:
SELECT TOP 5000 * FROM
(

SELECT * from tbl_A WHERE fld_Id = 0
UNION ALL
SELECT * from tbl_B where fld_Id = 0
}

This gives me a syntax error that I cannot figure out.

Any ideas?

Union Changing Column Results?

Feb 3, 2005

I have a problem with a union all that seems to be changing the results of a column based on using the union, when I run the querys separatly I get the expected results in the field!

Basically 3 queries pulled together for reporting purposes.

Orders (which can include a gift so the gifts are separated in the second query).
OrderGifts (pulled out of the orders).
Gifts (straight gifts with no associated orders).

The problem is showing up in the first ORDERS query. I can pull a specific order and the calculation for the AMOUNT(eg:$15.20) is correct, but when I combine the tables I get a different AMOUNT(eg:$15.199999999999999).

Here are the values for the fields in the amount calc:
totitems=12.9500
totcredits=.0000
discount=.0000
tax=.0000
refund=.0000
convrate=1.0
postage=2.2500
giftamt=15.0000

I tried converting each of the fields to an decimal befre the calc and same results

I tried ROUND and same thing!

I have been trying to chase this down all day, cant figure out what the problem is or how to get around it...whats going on here I am missing?

Here is the query, if you need any other info just let me know, I would GREATLY appreciate ANY direction of figuring this out!

Union Two Sets (consolidating Results)

Jul 8, 2015

Code:
SELECT DISTINCT LEFT([REPORTING_MONTH], 4)+'-'+SUBSTRING([REPORTING_MONTH],5,6) as REPORTING_MONTH, t.EMPLOYEE,
'' as COUNT_FTP,
CASE WHEN [MEDIUM_RCVD] = 'EMAIL' THEN COUNT(MEDIUM_RCVD) ELSE '' END AS COUNT_EMAIL
FROM [GPO].[dbo].[DW_SUBMISSION] as s
JOIN #TEMPActivity as t

[Code] ....

I'm trying to get the set to come out all on one line. REPORTING_MONTH, EMPLOYEE, COUNT_FTP, COUNT_EMAIL

But when I try null or '' it creates a second record and doesn't merge the two results.

Results Of Union Into Temp Table

This may be a dumb question, but I can't seem to get the syntax right. I have two temp tables that have the same columns, I want to do a union on them and store the results in a temp table. Any ideas?

Ie.

select * from #tmpTable1
union
select * from #tmpTable2

Displaying Distinct Results From Union Query

Aug 31, 2000

I've got a union query (below)and it returns rows that have duplivate itemno's, descrip's, imsrp3's, and imsrp4's, while the remaining columns are not duplicate for the same row. An Excel report uses this query to populate itself and for a more visually appealing look, I'd like to skip the duplicated columns in the display. I'm not sure how to use the Distinct or Group by in this case, since technically I'm dealing with two separate queries, neither one separately returning any duplicate rows.
thanks for any suggestions...

~
select itemno,descrip,imsrp3,imsrp4,qoh,border,wadcto,wad oco,
watrdj,wapddj,wauorg,wauser
from nowo
where nowo.wasrst <='40'
union
select itemno,descrip,imsrp3,imsrp4,qoh,border,wadcto,wad oco,
watrdj,wapddj,wauorg,wauser
from nopo
where nopo.wasrst <='499'

tblOpenSiteDates
Site: int
OpenDate: smalldate

tblCloseSiteDates

CloseDate: smalldate

newLocationID: int

I am trying to get a view which would display a site with the open and close dates. Null is ok for a close date for those opens that are still open.. not every office has an open date and close date.. it is possible to have just a close date and not an open date (ie unsure of open date but I know its closing)

so the output would be

How Do You Limit The Number Of Results In Select?

Display The Number Of Results Found For A Subcategory

Oct 13, 2004

Hello,

I am working on a project that displays images. Before you can get to the image, you have to select a category that the image may be in. After that, you select the sub categories. I am trying to display a count of the number of records that the subcategories contain. Here is an example:

The user can make a selection from the categories listed below:

Geographic Area
Time Period
Topic
Record Type

If the user selects time period, he/she is taken to a list of subcategories. I would like to display the subcategories with a count of the number of records that will be displayed if it is selected. Listed below is an example of what this would look like:

Colonial (10) -----the number in parenthesis is the number of records that will be displayed if selected------
Gilded Age (12)
Revolutionary (9)
Progressive Era (22)

Is there a way to display the number in parenthesis using ASP.Net and SQL Server 2000? Any clues will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Integration Services :: Iterating Over Object In SSIS With Fix Number Of Results Each Time

Aug 11, 2015

I've got this issue with a query in SSIS. From a table in SQL Server I'm getting over 25000 different identifiers. These identifier are associated to many values in a table in  one Oracle Database. This is the schema that I have implemented for doing this.

The problem is that some days the identifiers can be over 45000, and at this point perform a loop for every one is not the best solution (It can take to much time to get the result). Previously I have performed another query where from the SQL statement.

I am creating and sending a unique row with all the values concatenated and then I have recover this unique string from an object and use it to create the query in the ODBC Source that invoke the table in Oracle: something like this:
'Select * from Oracle_table' + @string_values

with @string_values = 'where value in (........)'. It works good because the number of values is small enough to be used, like 250. But in this case I can not use this approach because the number is really big and obviously the DBA of Oracle is going to cancel the query.

So I wonder, how can I iterate over the object getting only a few number of values everytime, something like 300 or maximum 500, to avoid the cancellation of the query but at the same time doing the minimum number of loops.

I have a query which does 3 selects and Union ALLs each to get a final result set. The performance is unacceptable - takes around a minute to run. If I remove the Union All so that the result sets are returned individually it returns all 3 from the query in around 6 seconds (acceptable performance).

Any way to join the result sets together without using Union All.

Each result set has exactly the same structure returned...

Query below [for reference]...

WITH cte AS (
SELECT A.[PoleID], ISNULL(B.[IsSpanClear], 0) AS [IsSpanClear], B.[SurveyDate], ROW_NUMBER() OVER (PARTITION BY A.[PoleID] ORDER BY B.[SurveyDate] DESC) rownum
FROM[UT_Pole] A
LEFT OUTER JOIN [UT_Surveyed_Pole] B ON A.[PoleID] = B.[PoleID]

[Code] .....

Union All Does Not Union All Rows

Nov 6, 2006

Hi all,

I have a Union All transformation with 4 inputs and one output when I debug the package the sum of the different inputs rows does not match the row count in output.

I don't understand, I've used the Union All transform many times and I've never seen this.

Any idea why this could happen ?

Is There A Way To Hold The Results Of A Select Query Then Operate On The Results And Changes Will Be Reflected On The Actual Data?

Apr 1, 2007

hi,  like, if i need to do delete some items with the id = 10000 then also need to update on the remaining items on the with the same idthen i will need to go through all the records to fetch the items with the same id right?  so, is there something that i can use to hold those records so that i can do the delete and update just on those records  and don't need to query twice? or is there a way to do that in one go ?thanks in advance!

SQL Server 2008 :: Elegant Way For Returning All Results When Subquery Returns No Results?

Mar 25, 2015

I have four tables: Customer (CustomerId INT, CountyId INT), County (CountyId INT), Search(SearchId INT), and SearchCriteria (SearchCriteriaId INT, SearchId INT, CountyId INT, [others not related to this]).

I want to search Customer based off of the Search record, which could have multiple SearchCriteria records. However, if there aren't any SearchCriteria records with CountyId populated for a given Search, I want it to assume to get all Customer records, regardless of CountyId.

Right now, I'm doing it this way.

DECLARE @SearchId INT = 100
SELECT * FROM Customer WHERE
CountyId IN
(
SELECT CASE WHEN EXISTS(SELECT CountyId FROM SearchCriteria WHERE SearchId = @SearchId)
THEN SearchCriteria.CountyId

[Code] .....

This works; it just seems cludgy. Is there a more elegant way to do this?

Need To Display Results Of A Query, Then Use A Drop Down List To Filter The Results.

Feb 12, 2008

Hello. I currently have a website that has a table on one webpage. When a record is clicked, the primary key of that record is transfered in the query string to another page and fed into an sql statement. In this case its selecting a project on the first page, and displaying all the scripts for that project on another page. I also have an additional dropdownlist on the second page that i use to filter the scripts by an attribute called 'testdomain'. At present this works to an extent. When i click a project, i am navigated to the scripts page which is empty except for the dropdownlist. i then select a 'testdomain' from the dropdownlist and the page populates with scripts (formview) for the particular test domain. what i would like is for all the scripts to be displayed using the formview in the first instance when the user arrives at the second page. from there, they can then filter the scripts using the dropdownlist.
My current SQL statement is as follows.
SelectCommand="SELECT * FROM [TestScript] WHERE (([ProjectID] = @ProjectID) AND ([TestDomain] = @TestDomain))"
So what is happening is when testdomain = a null value, it does not select any scripts. Is there a way i can achieve the behaivour of the page as i outlined above? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
James.

Mind-boggling Gridview Results! Different Results For Different Teams..

Jun 18, 2008

Hi all, I have the following SQLDataSource statement which connects to my Gridview:<asp:SqlDataSource ID="SqlDataSourceStandings" runat="server" ConnectionString="<%$ ConnectionStrings:ConnectionString %>"  SelectCommand="SELECT P.firstName, P.lastName, T.teamName, IsNull(P.gamesPlayed, 0) as gamesPlayed, IsNull(P.plateAppearances,0) as plateAppearances, IsNull( (P.plateAppearances - (P.sacrifices + P.walks)) ,0) as atbats, IsNull(P.hits,0) as hits, P.hits/(CONVERT(Decimal(5,2), IsNull(NullIF(P.atbats, 0), 1))) AS [average], (P.hits + P.walks)/(CONVERT(Decimal(5,2), IsNull(NullIF( (P.atbats + P.sacrifices + P.walks) , 0), 1)))  AS [OBP], (P.hits - (P.doubles + P.triples + P.homeRuns) + (2 * P.doubles) + (3 * P.triples) + (4 * P.homeRuns)) / (CONVERT(Decimal(5,2), IsNull(NullIF(P.atbats, 0), 1))) AS [SLG], P.singles, P.doubles, P.triples, P.homeRuns, P.walks, P.sacrifices, P.runs, P.rbis FROM Players P INNER JOIN Teams T ON P.team = T.teamID ORDER BY P.firstName, P.lastName"></asp:SqlDataSource>There are 8 teams in the database, and somehow the average and obp results are as expected for all teams except where T.teamID = 1.  This doesn't make sense to me at all!  For example, I get the following results with this same query: First NameLast NameTeamGPPAABHAVGOBPSLG1B2B3BHRBBSACRRBI

ErikGalvezMelville82625180.7200000.7307691.24000011322101015 As you can see, all teams except for Safe Haven's have the correct AVG and OBP.  Since AVG is simply H/AB, it doesn't make sense for Gabriel Helbig's results to be 1.00000. Can anyone shed ANY light on this please?Thank you in advance,Markuu  ***As a side note, could anyone also let me know how I could format the output so that AVG and OBP are only 3 decimal places? (ex: 0.719 for the 1st result)***

Removing Individual Results From A Paged Set Of Results.

Oct 19, 2007

Hi,
I have a web form that lets users search for people in my database they wish to contact. The database returns a paged set of results using a CTE, Top X, and Row_number().
I would like to give my users to option of removing individual people from this list but cannot find a way to do this.
I have tried creating a session variable with a comma delimited list of ID's that I pass to my sproc and use in a NOT IN() statement. But I keep getting a "Input string was not in a correct format." Error Message.
Is there any way to do this? I am still new to stored procedures so any advice would be helpful.
Thanks

PASTE SQL RESULTS INTO EXCEL - Funny Results

Jan 30, 2008

Hi, when I copy and paste results from query analyzer into Excel it appears that values with zeroes at the end loose the zeroes. Example, if I copy and paste V128.0 into an Excel cell it comes out as V128 or if I copy 178.70 it displays as 178.7 - any ideas? I'm using SQL Enterprise Manager for 2000.
