i have problem regarding the row length and varchar.
my problem is on every new row i have +6 more character on one of my field then the last record. and BOL says i can only have 8060 character per row.
What i can not use the full lenght of varchar(8000) on field.
Hi, I am trying to insert text into a varchar(5000) column from a JAVA program. I am using MSDE database (which I believe is a strip down version of SQL7.0), with a variation of ms SQL Server 3.70.06.90 ODBC driver and tds jdbc driver from inet software. With the ODBC driver, I don't get any error but the data saved is only 255 characters. With the latter driver, I get a data truncation error and nothing is saved.
Hi,I have a pretty straightforward question to do with variable length fields I hope someone can help me with:When using varchar (or nvarchar), is there any point in specifying a smaller length than the maximum? Does it save space or improve performance at all?ThanksRedit: I suppose the max rowsize is an issue. any others?
a simple question to ask for varchar type. I want to update a varchar type parameter to a stored procedure to update a table. My question is , if I don't specify the length. and the varchar type will be trimmed to only 1 character. I thought it's supposed to be 50 by default? Besides if I need to compare varchar values, do I need to specify length as well? Cheers.
Hi, all I am seting up a table with email message, I am wondering what is the max length for varchar field. I am so reluctant to use text field, since when I run query for the descriptiona in sql analyzer, text field cannot be fully display in column. Any tricks to share? Thanks Betty
Hi, everyone, I want to know is there a way for me to set varchar to store more than 8000 characters? (I did checked from sql server books online and i know that the maximum storage for varchar, but i just want to know is there any exceptional way for me to store more than that).
I have a column set to varchar(12) so I can ensure that the length of the string entered will never be more than 12 characters but I want to limit the string to a minimum of 8 characters, so I end up with a string that is from 8-12 characters long. How do I ensure the minimum length of 8 characters? I'm using SQL Server 2005 if that helps. I tried adding a check constraint like so:
DATALENGTH(UserName) >= 8
But I keep getting an error when I save the table, so any help would be very much appreciated.
Hi all, I have a strange situation. I have a field in the database that has to be a string type field of around 4000 characters.
So naturally I setup the field as type: varchar length: 4000
However when I try to put any text in this field I find that I can put no more than 1023 characters of ascii text in there.
To check if this was a max record length prob I setup a test table with only 2 fields: ID: int, PK, Identity longVarchar: varchar, 4000
and tried to put some ascii text into the field called longVarchar. Again the most I could put in was 1023 characters!
Thinking that it could just be that SQL svr box that was wacky, I tried it on another one with the same result.
I have tried using other field types (nvarchar, char) and have found that they all could only hold 1023 characters max, no matter what how high I defined the size of the field.
Try it out yourselves and see if you get the same result. Any useful suggestions would really be appreciated.
Hi Everyone,I have a question about dynamically changing the length of a varchar(n)field, in case the value I'm trying to insert is too big and will givea "truncated" error, but before the error is given! i.e. Is there somekind of a way to "test" the length of the field while Inserting thevalue into it, and to have it automatically increase its length to thelength of the value being inserted, in case the value is too big?I've been able to do this in a "primitive" way, simply by identifyingthe specific error number in case the value is being truncated, andthen increasing the length of the varchar(n) field by using the ALTERcommand, and then duplicating the insert statement, but is there astandard (shorter) way of doing this? Here is my code (I'm working in an ASP environment):<%var_txt = "abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz12345678789"sql = "Insert Into Table1 (text) Values ('" & var_txt & "')"On Error Resume Nextconn.Execute sqlIf err = -2147217833 ThenResponse.Write "Error Recognized Successfully!<br /><br />"sql = "ALTER TABLE Table1 ALTER COLUMN text VARCHAR(" &Len(var_txt) &") NOT NULL"On Error Resume Nextconn.Execute sqlIf err<>0 ThenResponse.Write "Error while trying to alter Column:<br/>" & err & "= " & err.description & "<br />"ElseResponse.Write "Column altered successfully to: " &Len(var_txt) &"<br />"sql = "Insert Into Table1 (text) Values ('" & var_txt &"')"On Error Resume Nextconn.Execute sqlIf err<>0 ThenResponse.Write "<br />Error number 2:<br />" &err.description &"<br />"ElseResponse.Write "Now it was added successfully!HaHa!<br />"End IfEnd IfElseResponse.Write "Success."End If%>Thanks in advance!
I'm trying to get an understanding of a serious problem I have with a large DB in production. This is going to be obvious to someone (everyone probably) <bg>
I have a table which consists of numerous varchars and ints but also a Text type field. This table resides in a SQL 2000 Database. This DB currently has a data file size of 16Gb and a Transaction Log size of 17Gb. When I edit the table and increase the size of a Varchar field from 50 to 100 these files grow to more than double their size!
I am currently working on a PHP based website that needs to be able to drawfrom Oracle, MS SQL Server, MySQL and given time and demand other RDBMS. Itook a lot of time and care creating a flexible and solid wrapper and amdeep into coding. The only problem is a noticed VARCHAR fields being drawnfrom SQL Server 2000 are being truncated to 255 characters.I searched around php.net and found the following :Note to Win32 Users: Due to a limitation in the underlying API used by PHP(MS DbLib C API), the length of VARCHAR fields is limited to 255. If youneed to store more data, use a TEXT field instead.(http://www.php.net/manual/en/functi...ield-length.php)The only problem with this advice is Text fields seem to be limited to 16characters in length, and I am having similar results in terms of truncationwith other character based fields that can store more than 255 characters.I am using PHP 4.3.3 running on IIS using the php_mssql.dll extensions andthe functions referenced here http://www.php.net/manual/en/ref.mssql.php.What are my options here? Has anybody worked around this or am I missingsomething obvious?James
is there any way or a tool to identify if in procedure the Parameter length was declarated less than table Column length ..
I have a table
CREATE TABLE TEST001 (KeyName Varchar(100) ) a procedure CREATE PROCEDURE SpFindNames ( @KeyName VARCHAR(40) ) AS BEGIN SELECT KeyName FROM TEST001 WHERE KeyName = @KeyName END KeyName = @KeyName
Here table Column with 100 char length "KeyName" was compared with SP parameter "@KeyName" with length 40 char ..
IS there any way to find out all such usage on the ALL Procedures in the Database ?
For those of you who would like to reference my exact issue, I'm dealing with the RSExecution SSIS package at the "Update Parameters" data flow task, at the Script Component.
The script tries to split parameter data into name and value. Unfortunately, I have several reports that are passing parameters that are very large. One example has over 65,000 characters all in the normal "¶mname=value&parm2=value..." format.
The code in the script works fine until it gets to one of these very large parameter sets. I have figured out what is causing the issue. Here's some code:
Dim paramBlob as Byte() paramBlob = Row.BlobColumn.GetBlobData(0, Row.BlobColumn.Length)
The second parameter of the .GetBlobData function takes an INTEGER as its count! Therefore, no matter what kind of datatype I pass to the string that the script will later split, it will be limited to 32767 characters.
THIS IS A PROBLEM!!!
Does anyone know a workaround for this issue? I need all of the parameter data to be reported, and I would hate to have to skip over rows like this. Also, if I'm missing something, please fill me in!
I am trying to narrow down this problem. Basically, I added 3 columns to my article table. It holds the article id, article text, author and so on. I tested my program before adding the additional field to the program. The program works fine and I can add an article, and edit the same article even though it skips over the 3 new fields in the database. It just puts nulls into those columns. So, now I have added one of the column names I added in the database to the code. I changed my businesslogic article.vb code and the addarticle.aspx, as well as the New article area in the addartivle.aspx.vb page. The form now has an additional textbox field for the ShortDesc which is a short description of the article. This is the problem now: The command parameters.length is 9 and there are 10 parameter values. Right in the middle of the 10 values is the #4 value which I inserted into the code. It says Nothing when I hover my mouse over the code after my program throws the exception in 17 below. Why is command parameters.length set to 9 instead of 10? Why isn't it reading the information for value 4 like all the other values and placing it's value there and calculating 10 instead of 9? Where are these set in the program? Sounds to me like they are hard coded in someplace and I need to change them to match everything else. 1 ' This method assigns an array of values to an array of SqlParameters.2 ' Parameters:3 ' -commandParameters - array of SqlParameters to be assigned values4 ' -array of objects holding the values to be assigned5 Private Overloads Shared Sub AssignParameterValues(ByVal commandParameters() As SqlParameter, ByVal parameterValues() As Object)6 7 Dim i As Integer8 Dim j As Integer9 10 If (commandParameters Is Nothing) AndAlso (parameterValues Is Nothing) Then11 ' Do nothing if we get no data12 Return13 End If14 15 ' We must have the same number of values as we pave parameters to put them in16 If commandParameters.Length <> parameterValues.Length Then17 Throw New ArgumentException("Parameter count does not match Parameter Value count.") 18 End If19 20 ' Value array21 j = commandParameters.Length - 122 For i = 0 To j23 ' If the current array value derives from IDbDataParameter, then assign its Value property24 If TypeOf parameterValues(i) Is IDbDataParameter Then25 Dim paramInstance As IDbDataParameter = CType(parameterValues(i), IDbDataParameter)26 If (paramInstance.Value Is Nothing) Then27 commandParameters(i).Value = DBNull.Value28 Else29 commandParameters(i).Value = paramInstance.Value30 End If31 ElseIf (parameterValues(i) Is Nothing) Then32 commandParameters(i).Value = DBNull.Value33 Else34 commandParameters(i).Value = parameterValues(i)35 End If36 Next37 End Sub ' AssignParameterValues38 39 40 41
I have looked far and wide and have not found anything that works to allow me to resolve this issue.
I am moving data from DB2 using the MS OLEDB Provider for DB2. The OLEDB source sees the column of data as DT_TEXT. I setup a destination to SQL Server 2005 and everything looks good until I try and run the package.
I get the error: [OLE DB Source [277]] Error: An OLE DB error has occurred. Error code: 0x80040E21. An OLE DB record is available. Any suggestions on how I can get the large string data in the varchar column in DB2 into the varchar(max) column in SQL Server 2005?
I am trying to create a store procedure inside of SQL Management Studio console and I kept getting errors. Here's my store procedure.
Code Block CREATE PROCEDURE [dbo].[sqlOutlookSearch] -- Add the parameters for the stored procedure here @OLIssueID int = NULL, @searchString varchar(1000) = NULL AS BEGIN -- SET NOCOUNT ON added to prevent extra result sets from -- interfering with SELECT statements. SET NOCOUNT ON; -- Insert statements for procedure here IF @OLIssueID <> 11111 SELECT * FROM [OLissue], [Outlook] WHERE [OLissue].[issueID] = @OLIssueID AND [OLissue].[issueID] = [Outlook].[issueID] AND [Outlook].[contents] LIKE + ''%'' + @searchString + ''%'' ELSE SELECT * FROM [Outlook] WHERE [Outlook].[contents] LIKE + ''%'' + @searchString + ''%'' END
And the error I kept getting is:
Msg 402, Level 16, State 1, Procedure sqlOutlookSearch, Line 18
The data types varchar and varchar are incompatible in the modulo operator.
Msg 402, Level 16, State 1, Procedure sqlOutlookSearch, Line 21

For the life of me I cannot figure out why SSIS will not convert varchar data. instead of using the table to table method, I wrote a SQL query so that I could transform the datatype ntext to varchar 512 understanding that natively MS is going towards all Unicode applications.
The source fields from Access are int, int, int and varchar(512). The same is true of the destination within SQL Server 2005. the field 'Answer' is the varchar field in question....
I get the following error

DTS used to be a very strong tool but a simple import such as this is causing me extreme grief and wondering of SQL2005 is ready for primetime. FYI SP1 is installed. I am running this from a workstation and not on the server if that makes a difference...
I have a table that contains a lot of demographic information. The data is usually small (<20 chars) but ocassionally needs to handle large values (250 chars). Right now its set up for varchar(max) and I don't think I want to do this.
How does varchar(max) store info differently from varchar(250)? Either way doesn't it have to hold the container information? So the word "Crackers" have 8 characters to it and information sayings its 8 characters long in both cases. This meaning its taking up same amount of space?
Also my concern will be running queries off of it, does a varchar(max) choke up queries because the fields cannot be properly analyzed? Is varchar(250) any better?
Should I just go with char(250) and watch my db size explode?
Usually the data that is 250 characters contain a lot of blank space that is removed using a SPROC so its not usually 250 characters for long.
I was doing some research on how SQL stores data on disk. MSDN states that when storring a varchar, only the length of the data itself is used plus two bytes. So, if you store "car" in a VarChar(50) it will take 5 bytes. But when you store "car" in a VarChar(500) it will also take 5 bytes.
What is the reason users should define the parameter lenght? Can you use VarChar(8000) whole the time, without any drawback?
We ran into a problem loading access where tables where if we did notselect the property allow zero length we got an error message whenloading data with some empty values. We are now ramping up SQL server and the question came up will SQLserver have the same problem with empty data values. Is there an SQL server equivalent to allow zero length?
Hi all - am in a bit of a quandry over this one!My application is all up and running - it's an despact & accounts app - I've missed one thing though - the ability to deal with half pennies (or half cents for those of you over the pond ;)) All of my tables are set up as decimal (19,2) along with all the params in my stored procs (a lot!). Is there an easy way to change all of these in 1 swoop? Thanks in advance, Stephen.
I'm trying to load a flat file (text) into a table with 83 columns in it. The record length on the flat file is 251 characters long. For some reason when running the DTS import utility, DTS can't read the past the 142 character on the flat file, it spills on to the next line. The red bar is set on the 143 character when i use the fix field options in DTS import. Can the red bar be moved out further? Or is there a max field length using DTS?
Hi Guys I am having a problem with the execution of a query. This is how it is working,if i include all the clounms(26 columns) for the output of 34,000 records it is taking around 4 Min. but if i exclude one column or reduce the size of the column i.e from text to varchar(100) it is taking 23 Sec.
If i am trying to change the size of the column from varchar(100) to varchar(150) it is taking the same time i.e, 4 Min.
Looking at this i am wondering if there are any system setting where we can increase the size of the rows for the out put or are there any other things i have to look at to increase the speed of the Query.
Did anyone come across this problem. Any help is appriciated. Thanks Chak.
Hi, I am sending the output of a query to a file and unfortunately every row is containing only a certain number of characters. My query has rows having length of 1500 characters for each row. When I get the query and send it to a file I am seeing only the first 250 characters for each row instead of 1500 characters.
I will be grateful if anyone can help me suggesting a solution for this problem.
SQL Intrduction book on page 269 says that the max.amount of data contained in a single row is 8060 bytes. But I have no difficulty creating a table with two varchar 8000 columns. How can this be ? Can somebody explain how to interpret the statement about max.8060 bytes please? Thanks.
