Hello, I need some help, I am in school right now and I am in a SQL server class. We have been working in the query analizer making a database. Well I have to print out everything that I have typed. But I want to view it first. How do I do that?

I am using a stored procedure that is behaving badly - the subtree cost is about 2000 and it takes between 3-4 seconds to run, and sometimes it takes over a minute to run. I have made some optimizations that cause the stored procedure to run in generally under 1 second (at most under 2 seconds), but the subtree cost of it jumps to 4000!! All of this while the server was experiencing similar load (the tests were done within minutes of each other).
I know that the subtree cost is a way to gauge the performance of a query against other queries, but I have typically seen the cost go in the same direction as the execution time (they both go up or the both go down).
How does SQL Server determine the cost (I know that is based on statistics, but I was wondering if anyone had more details)? Is it more important to have a lower subtree cost, or a lower execution time? Am I going to get into trouble later with this high subtree cost?
I would appreciate any help on this matter.

Hi All,I have come up against a wall which i cannot get over.I have an sql db where the date column is set as a varchar (i know, should have used datetime but this was done before my time and i've got to work with what is there). The majority of values are in the format dd/mm/yyyy. However, some values contain the word 'various'.I'm attempting to compare the date chosen on a c# .net page with the values in the db and also return all the 'various' values as well.I have accomplished casting the varchar to a datetime and then comparing to the selected date on the .net page. However, it errors when it comes across the 'various' entrant.Is there anyway to carry out a select statement comparing the start_date values in the db to the selected date on the .net page and also pull out all 'various' entrants at the same time without it erroring? i thought about replacing the 'various' to a date like '01/01/2010' so it doesn't stumble over the none recognised format, but am unsure of how to do it.This is how far i have got: casting the varchar column to datetime and comparing. I am trying to perform a query in SQL that will merge the contents of various table, using search criteria to narrow down the results. All of the tables have the exact same fields, and the search criteria is the same for all of them. What I am looking for is the most efficient way to perform this. I am using SQL stored procedures, and passing the results into my code. Note that in my real-world scenario there are more than three tables.
1) Merge all the tables into one and then perform the search criteria:

THis is so annoying. I have 3 ADO executes in my program. THe first one creates a view, the second one performs an outer join on that view and returns a result set, the third execute drops the aforementioned view. THe program that is using this is installed on about 200 computers scattered across Germany and Italy, all querying the same MSsql server 7.0. THe queries run quite quick when few users are actively using the program (after hours for example). however in the heat of the day performance goes up and down dramatically with identical queries taking from 1 to 20 seconds to return their result set. Now I initially thought 'bandwidth issue out of our server'. However I noticed that if I take those three queries and run them from the sql server enterprise manager( running on the same computer as the aforementioned program) then the queries run instantly and the data is in my result pane in less than 2 seconds ALWAYS....even when the program is dogging it with 20 second delays before the result set returns. I know it is hanging on the return of the result set as I put a stop after before each ADO execute in order to check which one was eating up my time. Why is there this dichotomy between running the queries from my enterprise manager versus running them from an ADO object. Both are using TCP/IP (no named pipes involved). I havent monkied with the attributes of the ADO result set so they are all set to default.
I have used the sql server profiler to trace these queries and they always run in less than 33 milliseconds. THe duration is also never more than 33 milliseconds. THis stinks of a network resource issue but what always leads me somewhere else is how consistent the performance of the enterprise manager is when it runs the exact same three queries.

When I run query in excel it gives result with different column sequence. The same query gives result with different column sequence when used in query analyzer or VBA Macro. E.g., Select * from ABC.

I will try to abstract my problem to an example, simple as possible.
In a relational database exists 2 tables: Cars (containing car name and car id) and Costs (containing costs caused by cars - with columns like cost_id, car_id (fk to table cars), cost_category (something like 'buy', 'cleaning', 'maintenance'), cost_date and costs)
In the olap cube I've 2 dimensions: Cars and Costs and a measure sum(cost).
How can I create a measure containing the max value of the sum(costs) group by car_id?
In the SQL world it would be something like

I just started with all this 'replication' subject and run into some 'stange ?' problem. I suscesfully set-up publisher and distributor on one computer. create subscriber on another. And seems that this is working with no errors as I see in Replication monitor, details. All agent turned to verbose output and showing no errors at all. but the strange problem that the database does not (!) appear at subscriber (?????) I mean - no tables, no stored procedures, no nothing - how it can be possible ? What I'm doing wrong ? Or what I should do ?
P.S. Forgot to add: Both servers running latest SQL server 2005 with latest Service Pack. Subscribtion of type 'push'

Say you have a state column with the name of a state in it. And you need to add a branchId to the table. I know I should not have it in there, and the application should use proper lookup tables, but that's not the case.
Can SQL Server query analyzer loop through and update the branchid field based on a lookup in a lookup table?
How would that be done?
