Hello all. Yes, this is another question relating to how to make a front-end to a SQL database using ASP.NET. I performed a search in this forum and did not find the exact answer to my questions (one responder to the other threads about this topic even said this is the incorrect sub-forum for this question, but I found no other appropriate place; considering this sub-forum is for asking beginner questions).
Besides the "quickstart" tutorials linked off this site, can you point me to other web resources (tutorials, walk-throughs, etc) or books that would provide the necessary information to develop a SQL front-end? Specifically I need help creating the Update Record and Delete Record pages.
I was hoping a "rapid development" tool could be used. At my disposal I have Visual Studio .NET 2003, Dreamweaver MX 2004, and FrontPage 2003.
I need a value in the SQL2000 database to be returned as a text field in the front end. i.e. value set as '0' or '1' in the database field needs to be returned as 'No' or 'Yes' in the front end.
If anyone can help with this daft query, it would be greatly appreciated.
I am currently designing an adp front end that links to a Sql Server database.
In terms on front end upgrade prespective i am thinking about a logon routine procedure ( which should be a vba code code that runs at startup) to check wheter the adp front end which is being used is the latest release hence compatible with the database current version.
Create and manage version number at back end level is quiet easy however to set a version number or whatever else information in the adp is somewhat a big hassle as database properties are not available from visual basic when using adp.
Was also thinking about using my xml file which holds my configuration information such as Data source - catalog but that's mean deployment of new front end must be carried out with local xml file change.
Also any manual update of information about version in xml file could allow old front end to run with database.
Please any tips and advises on how to handle this issue highly appreciated.
Hi,I'm new to SQL and databases in gnereal but am trying to source anapplication for windows that will sit on top of a small SQL database Ihave (created for local scout troup), I want an easy way to retrieve/add/view data from backend in nice menu-driven GUI format (no cmd-line).Can anyone recommend a useful app I could source to do thistask....thanks in advanceterry
Hi,I need to set up a generic table in Oracle that allows users to enterdata that can later be retrieved in reports.I was thinking of a 3 column table in this structure:DATE,ITEM,VALUEfiguring that you can store anything in this way because ITEM can beanything and you can have multiple instances of a particular value byhaving a new date.Does that seem reasonable? In any case, what are my user front end options? I was thinking aMicrosoft Access database but its not ideal because not everyone herehas Access? Can you do it with Excel? Or what other options are there as a simpleuser front end to enter the data? Thanks for any advice.Kim
I have a database that is in mssql and I'm using an odbc link to an access database where I want to add records to the mssql table. When I open the linked table in access it does not allow me to add a record. I have created a user account in mssql that has ownership to the database and I use this user in setting up the odbc link.
4 Layered Web Application for Inserting data into a database using sql server as the back end and a web form as the front end using C# . Can someone provide with code as I am new to this architecture and framework. Better send email. Thanks In Advance, A New Bie
We have a Customized share point application with Very minimal data usage and we have used only 5 to 6 lists and libraries only in the share point.
Configuration is
Clients -- fire wall --- Load Balancer ---- WF1 and WF2 --- SQL DB
ROUTING IS VIA FIRE WALL.
SUDDENLY THE SITE GOT DEAD SLOW AND UNABLE TO TRACE THE PROBLEM AS EVERY THING LOOKS FINE.
Checked with the firewall Team and they stated its fine from their end & even we have verified the counters, CPU, Memory & Page life expectancy, buffer counters all looks good and even we do not have huge data in the database. We have only 50 concurrent users are working...
Hi All, I'm working on a web application where the user needs to be able to create and name new databases that are identical in structure to other existing databases (that is, all tables, stored procedures, functions, indexes, etc.). This is so that they can create a new database for each client and need to be able to do this through the web application. Having hunted around a fair bit, I've established that SMO is capable of doing pretty much everything that I want. The only problem is that everything I do seems to be based on the actual SQL Server and associated databases rather than the ones I have created in the App_Data folder. The relevant code (so far) is:Dim sqlServer As New Server() With sqlServer.ConnectionContext .ServerInstance = "(local)" .Connect() .Disconnect() End With
For Each db As Database In sqlServer.Databases ListView1.Items.Add(db.Name) Next
Dim newDatabase As New Database(sqlServer, DbName.Text.ToString) newDatabase.Create() This does actaully create a new database, just not where I want it! Can anyone point me in the right direction as to how I can create a copy of a database in the App_Data folder? Thanks & regards, Paul
Do you have any idea if there is / where can I find web based data entry into SQL 7.0 database. What I'm looking for is something like Oracle Forms but for SQL 7.0.
I have database created using MSSQL. Now I need to copy the database into a new server so the database can be used in a MSDE based server. With MSSQL I can use "Attach...." to attach the database to the SQL Server. How can I achieve the same thing with MSDE?
I need to update one table in database A based on the other database B, which is on a romote server. The requirement is to update it automatically at 12:00 in the mid-night everyday. Database A is MS SQL Server 7, and database B is Oracle database.
What's the best to implement it? I thinking to use trigger, am I right?
I have 57 tables, 7 views and 1 stored procedure. Just wanted know based on these requirements how can I find the size of the database. Though the DB contains lots of tables, views and procedures. I am moving these details to new DB server. So I need to put right requirements.
I am building a pretty simple intranet application where we need to be able to track changes to tables. The tracking feature do not need to be very advanced, we just need to see who changed something and what it was. Therefore I decided just to use a trigger based solution, but need some input/advice since my SQL skills is somewhat lacking.
Consider the following (mock-up) schema:
-- My content table CREATE TABLE [Content]( [ContentGuid] [uniqueidentifier] NOT NULL PRIMARY KEY DEFAULT (newid()), [Data] [nvarchar](4000) NOT NULL, [ChangedBy] [nchar](10) NOT NULL, [MaybeNull] [int] NULL )
-- My history table CREATE TABLE [History]( [ChangedTable] [nvarchar](50) NOT NULL, [ReferenceGuid] [uniqueidentifier] NOT NULL, [ChangedBy] [nchar](10) NOT NULL, [ChangedOn] [datetime] NOT NULL DEFAULT (getutcdate()), [IsDelete] [bit] NOT NULL DEFAULT ((0)), [Changes] [xml] NOT NULL ) ON [PRIMARY]
-- My insert/update trigger CREATE TRIGGER [RecordChangeOnInsertUpdate] ON [Content] AFTER INSERT,UPDATE AS BEGIN SET NOCOUNT ON;
DECLARE @Changes xml SET @Changes = (select * from [inserted] for xml raw ('Content'), elements xsinil)
INSERT INTO [History] ([ChangedTable] ,[ReferenceGuid] ,[ChangedBy] ,[ChangedOn] ,[IsDelete] ,[Changes]) SELECT 'Content', ContentGuid, ChangedBy, getutcdate(), 0, @Changes FROM [inserted] END
-- My delete trigger CREATE TRIGGER [RecordChangeOnDelete] ON [Content] AFTER DELETE AS BEGIN SET NOCOUNT ON;
DECLARE @Changes xml SET @Changes = (select * from [deleted] for xml raw ('Content'), elements xsinil)
INSERT INTO [History] ([ChangedTable] ,[ReferenceGuid] ,[ChangedBy] ,[ChangedOn] ,[IsDelete] ,[Changes]) SELECT 'Content', ContentGuid, ChangedBy, getutcdate(), 1, @Changes FROM [deleted] END
I have decided to use the "one history table for all table changes" method. The changes for a row is stored in a xml column which obviously limits the total size of columns in a table being tracked, but that is not a problem in my application. In general I like this set up, since I will be able to change the schema continuously without having to change the triggers, and since the application will probably evolve a lot over the coming months this is pretty important to me.
EDIT: I should add that all the tables I will be tracking have a uniqueidentifier column. This makes it possible to related table rows in the different tables being tracked with their history.
A few concerns with the above SQL:
- Can the inserted/deleted table change between "SET @Changes = (select * ..." and the "INSERT INTO ..." statement, such that the data is not valid? If so, how to work around that?
- If I were to (hypothetically) perform a "UPDATE [Content] SET [Data] = 'something'", not only is my update trigger called once for each row updated, but the XML added to the inserted row in the history table ([History].[Changes]) represent all the rows updated in the batch update. How do I get around this?
Hi all--I am writing a DTS package looking to back up all databases in sequence. I am calling CDOSYS in a stored procedure from support.microsoft.com to send email upon failure. I have two types of tasks I am writing into the DTS package:
1. backup database <database> to disk = '<drive>:<path>.bak' with init
select @srvname=srvname from master.dbo.sysservers print @srvname select @db_name=name from master.dbo.sysdatabases print @db_name set @msg='Hi--check your database backups. The ' + @db_name + ' database backup on ' + @srvname + ' has failed.
Thanks--SQL Server';
Upon success, go to the next database to back up, execute through these steps for the next database. Here's my problem: The @db_name variable captures the proper value for the current SQL Server, but I want to turn both @srvname and @db_name into global variables. I would like to pass in @db_name as the current database being backed up (and failing), and @srvname as the current SQL Server instance being backed up.
The above statement "select @db_name=name from master.dbo.sysdatabases" definitely does not capture the current database name value. Any suggestions as to how to pass this in, if not as a global variable?
I'm new to reporting services and this is a very general question. I'm working on a large sales stats report with many results. I want to be able to compare many results for two dates. These results include, average sales value per day, average sales per weekday, sales with payment received, etc.
So basically there is lots of analysis needed mainly based on one database table (a fairly standard orders table).
What seemed the most logical thing to do is get all the relevant order rows for these two date ranges, A and B, and append a period column to the results, and then do all the maths/aggregate functions in Reporting Services. Thus only having to connect to database once.
And use a matrix with date period columns. So my query gives me results like:
Period order_total, is_weekday, no_weekdays_in_period.....
A 123 0 22....
A 54 1 22....
B 134 0 20...
Does this make the most sense? Or should I do the maths (grouping and aggregate functions) in lots of different queries (in which case, is Reporting Services worthwhile using?)?
HiI need to set security for row level but not based on Database user'slogin. It should be based on the user table login. For the particularuser I need to allow only the particular records to access insert, update delete and select.Let me explain clearlyFor example think we are using asp/asp.net websiteEg:www.test.comSo take this is our website and if you try this URL then you will get awindow for Login name and password. For example the Login name is windows user name (Here windows usermeans server windows user and not client) and windows password. So ifyou have login user id you can able to login in our site and we haveanother check. We have our own usertable this table consist all theuser login names and user rights. We will check the windows user whologin in our site has rights in the usertable I mean he is present inthe usertable if he is not present then we will display a message youhave no rights to access this site.If he has login id in our usertable then he allowed viewing ourpages. Still if he has the login id we will check the user who loginhas how much right to access to each page and the records of each tableits all depend on the user rights. So, here I need the row level security. For each and every table weneed to check the corresponding user and executing the record producelot of business logic problem for us.So after the user login we need automatically to set row levelsecurity for all the tables. Based on the user who login. So from there if we try select * from <tablename> then we can only ableto get the allowed records to select, insert, update, delete. Please can some one help how to solve this?Note:For some help you can refer the below URL (See in that they only givenabout the row level and column level security for each database usersnot for our required concept)http://www.microsoft.com/technet/pr...5/multisec.mspxThanks in advanceRams
I have 600 tables in my database, out of which 40 tables are look up value tables. I want generate truncate scripts which truncates all the tables in order of Parent child relationship excluding lookup tables. Is there any way to do this apart from figuring out Parent Child relationship and then writing the truncate statements for each of the table.
For example
EmployeeDetail table references Employee table DepartmentDetail table references Department table Department table references Employee table
I deployed my application to my newly installed xp pro laptop
The prerequisites are installed
Now that I want to testdrive my database application I get this error:
An attempt to attach an auto-named database file c:/program files........................MyDB.mdf failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file can not be opened, or it is located on UNC share.
Sorry for the lengthy question, but here goes: I currently have an access database with a FE and BE that resides on each users laptop. Weekly they connect to the network and synch the BE the master on a network drive. There are numerous propblems with this as it has grown quite extensive.
We would like to have this be a server based database with the remote users either having access through the web or something else?
A few of the capabilities of the current database: 1. generate and print reports 2. update project forms. 3. enter time logs 4. enter notes
My question is: What are my options for a remote FE? I am well versed in VB6 and Access. Would be willing to learn other languages (VB.net, my SQL, etc.) Would I be able to have the same functionality or would I have to have separate software for certain functions?
Hi, If I don't have any visual studio design tools etc. Is there any way I can build a simple form that will allow users to view, insert, update and delete single rows from a SQL 2005 database? Or is there any free downloads that might help. the table is really simple and has only 4 fields
I am new to SQL Server. I currently have an Access 2007 database and next year my client would like to migrate to SQL Server. Which Front End is the best...Access, VB.net or some other platform altogether?
Geekz, My problem is that , I had setup blog on server say, blog.xyz.com [I am using blogengine.net, which is in ASP.Net]. It is using sql server2005 as a backend for storing its blog's posts. After settingup blog, i tried to access its database through my windows application. But while development I was getting error that "An error has occured while establishing a onnection to the server. When connecting to SQL server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the defaukt settings SQL server doesnot allow remote connections.(Provider Named Pipes, error :40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)" I am using [String ConnectionString = "Data Source=sql-v123.mesa11.1Server.net; Initial Catalog=abc; User ID=xyz; Password=xyz123";] Then I decided to created a webservice that will access the data from databse blog and store it somewhere in datatable and using windows application i will retrieve those data for end user. So I want to to know that whether i can access the datatable of webservice holding the blog data from windows application or not. if answer is Yes, then please provide me with source or some great links. Or if There is any other option so that I can access my database directly from windows application, then it would be better. Looking for your answers. Thanks and regards
I have been using database mail for quite a few years now. I started using it with SQL Server 2005 and then it worked fine. Then we went over to SQL 2012 and the problems started. At first I could not get any e-mails out and read a post by Microsoft that a patch needs to come out but not available yet. That was in 2012. Presumably the patch came out with windows updates and my DB Mail started working. Now, however, I have the problem that some e-mails do get sent but the majority failed.
I use this so that whenever a user captures certain data to update a person's status on the database then an automatic e-mail will be sent to that person to inform them of their status at this company.
I have a set of data spread across a number of tables regarding stock market data. An example of this follows:
Market Capitalization...
Date CompA CompB 01/01/11 100 5 02/01/11 102 4
Share Price....
Date CompA CompB 01/01/11 100 100 02/01/11 101 99
Event Data...
Date Company 01/01/11 CompA 02/01/11 CompB
Pretty simply, I need a way to retrieve the market capitalisation and share price data based on the event data. So for instance I say 'oh, there is an event on the 01/01/11 involving company A, the market capitalisation on this day was 100, then for the next event it was 4 for company B.
I can also transpose the data so that the company name is in the rows and the dates in the columns for the market cap and share price tables, but this leads to the issue that when I try and get the data, I don't know how to query the correct company for that date.
For instance: SELECT Event.Date, Event.Company FROM Event
how do I now say.....
SELECT MarketCapitalisation.Column WHERE Column = Event.Company AND MarketCapitalisation.Date = Event.Date.
I have played around with a few basic joins, but I am having issue with the principle of that second to last line of SQL (so only getting the correct column).
I still have a copy of the data in excel so can flip things around as needed, but that would only mean that I would have the issue of WHERE Column = Event.Date instead of Event.Company.
In MS Visual Studio, when creating a new Report Model Project, after defining a datasource to an Oracle database (and successfully testing it), and a simple datasource view (1 table), when I click "Run" in Report Model Wizard, I receive the following error: "ORA-02179: valid options: ISOLATION LEVEL { SERIALIZABLE | READ COMMITTED }"
It does not appear that one can create Report Models from an Oracle database (since the SQL being used to query the Oracle database cannot be edited and contains syntax errors?). Is this the case?
I'm doing a database for employee info and thier payroll.. im using SQL Serevr 2000 and IIS but i'm not too sure what to use as the frontend, a VB would kinda be overkill because each employee just needs to be able to update his own info and addresses, maybe a XML or some other page that uses windows logins for authentication? any ideas, this is my first project like this on on a college Coop
i am almost finished building the front end for an application to manage restaurants. i am developing the front end with access vba, and intend to use sql server as a back end for the service. i just came across a group of people bashing access developers on a different site. i have several restaurants interested in using the service, and believe that the service should be very successfull (i have a very specific customer base that is currently not being targeted). the access component would not be a multiuser application. before i distribute the app i would appreciate any input. am i getting myself into trouble using access vba? should i run scared and switch to a vb.net web service? thanks in advance for any thoughts.
Below is a post by blindman from my other "mentoring" thread (http://www.dbforums.com/showthread.php?t=1608569). I wanted to respond to it but not in that thread:
Yeah, but if he's going to go unbound he might as well develop in .Net rather than Access. You lose half the convenience of MSAccess as a front end if you use unbound forms and controls.
Besides, he's trying to learn SQL Server, not front-end development. Learning both at the same time may be a bit much. I'd suggest he stick with his idea of converting the Access database to SQL Server back-end.
But, you should definitely convert the Access front-end to a Microsoft Access Data Project, rather than a classic mdb file.
Going unbound would increase your application performance, but probably not noticably unless you have scores of uses, and since you are currently using straight MS Access I'd guess you have no more than five or six simultaneous users, right?

To start I have decided that ADO is the way to go even though I don't necessarily need the performance boost for my current situation. Keep in mind I am planning for future and more demanding opportunities, hopefully :) And I'd like to learn the "right" way to do things.
I actually use ADO quite a bit in my current DB app and bound controls as well so it really wasn't a new concept. However using strictly ADO produces alot more work and code. And like blindman says it pretty much takes all the ease of Access away and VB.NET for that matter too. I mean all the wizards are useless. So I have two questions:
1. When going to all ADO you are pretty much recreating what Access already does for you right? Coding in ADO is more work right? I mean you have to setup connections and fill fields and listboxes manually in code right? I don't mind the extra work I just want to make sure if I'm going to be doing all this extra coding that it is the right thing to be doing.
2. MDB vs. ADP - From what little I've read Access Data Projects are made for use with SQL Server. It is even more useful if you don't/can't actually work in SQL Server. But again if I'm using ADO it strips all the usefulness of the ADP's doesn't? I don't need ADP's to create views or sprocs. I can do all of that through the management studio. So does it really matter if I use an ADP or MDB as my front end if that is all it is going to be is a front end?
Lastly I wanted to use VB 2005 as the front end but we utilize a ton of reports. As far as I know Crystal Reports or something like it has to be used with VB 2005. Or does VB 2005 have some built in reporting capabilities? I thought I saw some report designer for VB6. Anyway I decided to stick with Access because I am familiar with its reporting capabilities.
I should note that I have VB 2005 Express and SQL Server Express. Right now my company is not putting any money into a higher version.
