Weird Database Back Up Sizes
Oct 14, 2006I've got a 9gig DB which when backed up using the gui comes to 5gigs.
When backed using the SQL "backup database" command it comes to 20gigs.
Can someone suggest a good reason for the difference?

When a fail over occurs because of a lost of communication between the principal and mirror, the mirror server takes on the roll of Principal. When communication is returned to the Principal server, at some point does the database that was the previous Principal database automatically go back to being the Principal server?
Reducing Database And Log Sizes
Dec 16, 1999I have inherited a number of databases which were substantially over sized when they were set up. I'd like to reduce both the log and database files to be smaller than their original sizes, what's the easiest way to do this? If anyone has any experience of doing this please reply.

I'm wondering what would be the best approach to designing a database that will have different products one of them being T-Shirts of different sizes... for example 1 t-shirt design might only have 2 available sizes while another may have 4. I'm kinda stumped on how to approach this cuz there is multiple products like CD's, DVD's, Magazines etc which is pretty straight forward, but the T-shirts have this "variable" to it.
What i'm really wondering is should i have 1 main "Products" Table or should i have a separate table for the t-shirts? Should there be a column for each available size?
Currently my database has a "products table" that has foreign keys to "Product Type", "Artists", "Genre"
The database is basically for a record company
If anyone has designed a database similar to this i'd love any insight or even possibly to see a database diagram

When I try inserting into a permanent table it returns NULL.

What I need is a query that will produce a single result for all the tables in all the databases on the server.

Finding Database Sizes And Unallocated Space On A Server Wide Scale

I'm having a problem to which I'm sure the answer is simple...
All I want is a list of databases on my server with their allocated size and the free space within. Something similar to the first table that sp_spaceused gives you but on a server wide scale.
As I say, I'm sure there's a simple solution out there, but alas Google has failed me.

Weird Problem With Database Maintenance Plan....
Jan 6, 2004Weird problem with Database Maintenance Plan....
I will mention this problem I am having with one our servers. This server has several databases and four maintenance plans that schedule the backup, integrity and optimizations.
Now for only one of these plans, the rest of the plans are identical, on this server when I select the option "Perform these tests before backing up the database or transaction log" in the "Integrity" tab and save it, it does not stay selected. By that I mean, if I go back to the maintenance plan properities and check if the option is selected, it shows that it is not. While I had just selected the option a moment ago and saved it.
I realized this when the integrity jobs did not run before the backups as they used to. So, somehow this option got unselected and cannot be selected anymore.
On another server, there are three maintenance plans and all of them have the same problem. No matter what I do, I cannot save the plan with that option.
To give you guys some background, I already SP3 applied to all these SQL2000 servers running on Windows 2000. Also, these plans used to work fine before. For sometime, I have had some problems like these with my local installation of SQL server but not on our production boxes. Now it seems like the problem has propogated to them too.
Has anyone come across anything like this. Any help or direction would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Aug 10, 2007I'm having a problem with a Maintenance Plan created for SQL Server 2005 using Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio. See version information at the bottom of this post.
I have a Maintenance Plan using the "Back Up Database Task" that is set to perform a "Full" back up of "All Databases" on the local server. However, it appears that the list of "All databases" are hard-coded to be those databases that were available at the time the task was created. It seems any newly created databases don't appear to be in the list. If I attempt to edit the task and select the "These databases:" option, the newly created databases aren't even in the list.
Is there some way to have the task refresh the list of the databases available for backup? Ideally, I'd like any newly created databases to get backed up automatically without having to modify the task.

I'd likethe previous nights file to be overwritten, so there will be only a singleback up file for each database (tape back up runs every night, so each daysback up will be saved on tape).Every night the maintenance plan makes a back up of all the databases to anew file with a datetime stamp, meaning the previous nights file stillexists. Even when I check "Remove files older than 22 hours" the previousnights file still exists. Mar 26, 2001I am trying to back up database to a different server. I am able to map the serve to my current ones, however, when I go to Enterprise Manager - back up DB, I can not see the mapped drive from back up file location, I wasn't able to see any other disk location but the local drives.

The log file for database 'db_sys' is full. Back up the transaction log for the database to free up some log space.
But I don't know how to back up the transaction log for the database.
Do I need TRUNCTE LOG (in E.M) to free up some log space?
I only know back up all the database using ALL TASKS -> BACKUP DATABASE in E.M. Please help me. Thanks in advance.

HELP!!! Can Not Restore Database From Only Back Up I Have
Jul 10, 2006I had to transfer my database from one server to another. Both are running SQL 2000. I backed the database up and moved it to the new server however when I try to do a restore I get the following message:
The media set for database "xxx' has 2 family members but only 1 are provided. RESTORE DATABASE is terminating abnormally.
I did some searching and found a couple of posts that mentioned something about the back up including 2 files.
My problem is that the machine I backed this up from crashed when it was shut down and would not reboot so all of the data and the original database do not exist. Is there any hope of restoring this database. It is pretty critical.

The problem is that I don't know where to move the file to on the production server before I restore it. Is there a special folder I need to copy the file to? I'm creating a website that collects dates in a calendar control (from Peter Blum). When the page containing the control loads it populates the calendar with dates from the database (that have previously been selected by the user). The user then can delete existing dates and/or add new dates.
I create a dataset when the page loads and use it to populate the calendar. When the user finishes adding and deleting dates in the calendar control I delete the original dates from the dataset and then write the new dates to the dataset. I then give execute the data adapter update command to load the contents of the dataset back into the database. This command involves using parameterized queries. For example the Insert command is:

Reason To Back Up Database Master Key?

BACKUP MASTER KEY TO FILE = 'c:TestEncryptionMasterKey.key'
ENCRYPTION BY PASSWORD = '23'
but why would I need to do it as the DBMK is stored in the databases itself ( in sys.symmetric_keys) and we dump all databases nightly. Just "in case"?
