Why Did MS Give Access To Reports Thru Both Reporting Manager And Report Server?

Dec 20, 2007

what is MS's strategy for having two off the shelf ways of getting at reports? In a typical company, is the average non administrator type user getting at his reports via one, the other, both?

To Access Reporting Sevices (Report Manager, Reporting Web Services), Does One Has To Be An Admin On The Machine

Mar 12, 2007

Hi There,

Our DBA has installed reporting services on a server and now in order to access the report manager, one has to be an Admin on that Server. I am guessing that there is a mistake in the configuration of Reporting Services. Usually it should allow anybody who was added to the roles in the properties section of the Report Manager, right? I have also added the users to the DB..

Also I am using Windows Authentication to access Report Catalog items (Reporting Services is installed on Server2) from a web Application(deployed on Server1) and displaying the report using report viewer. For some reason, server1 has to be in an Admin role on Server2 to access the report catalog/report. This is kinda strange for me as I don't want everybody to be an Admin on Server2. Can anybody please point in the right direction?

Thanks.

Comparison Of SQL Server Reporting Services To Access Reports, Crystal Reports, Cognos Or Other Options

Nov 5, 2007

Hello SQL Server Experts, Data Analysts, and Report Writers et al:

re: Reporting Options with SQL Server

I wanted to propose an offshoot to the pryor thread:

Would anyone take a stab at comparing Access Reports, Crystal Reports,
Cognos or other options to all the Reporting Services and its components offered as part ofSQL Server, especially as to extracting data from SQL Server into a report format?

I guess this is a far as capabilites, ease of use, limitations, and especially formatting
or presentation of the end report product?

Thank you to all, and I hope this is a beneficial discussion to others.

Can We Generate Reports Without Using Report Viewer And Give A Popup For Saving And Opening It?

Apr 24, 2008

Hi

I am generating a Report by using SSRS. I am making using use of SSRS Report Viewer control for displaying the report. Which has an option to export the generated report in PDF format. Instead of displaying the report in by using report viewer I want to generate it directly in PDF format whenever that report is selected from the list of reports. So is there is any way to generate the report directly in PDF format which prompt a pop up for opening or saving the PDF?

Thanks,

Can Not Access Report Manager In SQL Server 2008 Feb CTP

Hi, I'm a beginner on SQL Server Reporting Services field. I perform a full installation of SQL Server 2008 CTP6 Developer Editon on a clean Windows Server 2008 Enterprise machine. SQL 2012 :: Catalog Doesn't Have Option To Give Read Access To SSIS Catalog To View Package Run Reports

Oct 23, 2014

"SSIS 2012 Catalog doesn't have option to give read access to SSIS Catalog to view package run reports" ... Any luck allowing power developers / operators access to READ the SQL 2012 SSIS Execution Reports without granting them SSIS_Admin or Sysadmin?

According to this link posted back in 2011 (w/ Microsoft's feedback in Nov 2011: "We’re closing this issue as “Won’t Fix.” At this point the bug does not meet our bar for resolving prior to SQL Server 2012 RTM. As we approach the SQL Server 2012 release the bar for making code changes gets progressively higher." URL....Regarding Permissions to SSIS Catalog, here are the findings. We can give access in three ways:

1. READ Access – We can provide a user db_datareader access. With this the user can see the objects within the SSIS catalog database, but cannot see the reports.

2. SSIS_ADMIN – Add the user to this database role in SSISDB. With this the user can view the reports. But it also provides them privileges to modify catalog information which is not expected. We can add it using below script EXEC sp_addrolemember 'ssis_admin' , 'REDMONDPAIntelAnalyst'

3. SYSADMIN - Add the user to this server role. This will make the user an admin on the SQL server. This is not intended. Is there any method available which will have provision to give read only access to see SSIS Catalog package execution reports and not having modify Catalog access.

Reports In Report Manager-drilldown

May 9, 2007

When runing a report in Report Manager I can click on an item and SQL Server provides the logic to drill down into the underlying tables. I can find no button to go back. The only way I've found to go back is to click a different tab at the top of the screen (History or something) then click View again and you get the original report. In designer there's a back button. Is there not such a button when running a saved report????

Thanks.

Printing SSRS Reports Using Report Manager

Apr 28, 2008

Hello all,
When I print the reports ( or export to PDF) in Report Manager, my every alternate page is blank? If the report is just one page report, I get second page as blank when I print or export. The report prints in Landscape format( which should be fine given 8.5 inch height and 11 inch width).
I have played with the interactive Height and other height parameters but with no luck.
My current settings in the rdl file is:
<BottomMargin>0.5in</BottomMargin>
<RightMargin>0.5in</RightMargin>
<PageWidth>11in</PageWidth>
...
<Width>11in</Width>
<InteractiveHeight>1.5in</InteractiveHeight>
<Language>en-US</Language>
<TopMargin>0.5in</TopMargin>
<PageHeight>8.5in</PageHeight>

I would highly appreciate any suggestions.

Viewing Reports Via Report Manager Fails (while Other Methods Succeed)

May 14, 2008

I'm having a strange problem with SSRS 2005 that I'm hoping someone might be able to help with. I've reinstalled SSRS (multiple times) and even reinstalled IIS hoping to resolve the problem, but it still exists.

The problem is that trying to view a report via Report Manager is failing. All other operations within Report Manager work fine (browsing folders and report lists, viewing folder and report properties, changing properties, setting permissions, etc.) Only trying to view reports fails. Whenever I try to view a report, I get the following error:

The request failed with HTTP status 401: Access Denied.

I can view reports via other methods just fine. For example, if I browse to the http://localhost/reportserver URL directly, I can view any report just fine. And if I connect to SSRS via SSMS, I can view reports there as well. I believe that both of those methods use a direct reportserver URL versus using the http://localhost/Reports/Pages/Report.aspx page within the Report Manager virtual directory.

Here's a bit of configuration information that may or may not be helpful to someone:

1. This is on a laptop running Windows XP SP2 (32-bit). SSRS (and all SQL Server components) are installed as default instances and SQL Server SP2 has been applied to everything.

2. All of the latest updates and fixes for Windows, SQL Server, Office, etc. have been installed via Windows Update.

3. This laptop is a member of a domain, but I am typically not connected to the domain (not in the office very often). I am, however, logging into the laptop using a domain account (with cached credentials). Local user accounts are frowned on by the domain and IT administrators involved (except for running local services). My domain account has full admin permissions within Windows and within SQL everywhere.

4. As far as I can tell, everything with regards to IIS, asp.net, and SSRS are configured correctly (ASPNET account seems to be set up correctly, all SQL services including the SSRS service are running under a local account with admin permissions, the Reports and ReportServer virtual directories in IIS are set to use Integrated Security, etc.)

I'm not an expert on SSRS, so this one has me stumped. I've reviewed all of the config files that I can think of looking at for SSRS and I've looked at the SSRS logs. Nothing really jumps out at me in terms of changes that might be required (and the SSRS logs don't really say much other than repeating the error). For example, I see the following lines in the ReportServerWebApp__xxx.log file:

aspnet_wp!ui!8!5/14/2008-13:00:17:: e ERROR: The request failed with HTTP status 401: Access Denied.
aspnet_wp!ui!8!5/14/2008-13:00:17:: e ERROR: HTTP status code --> 500
-------Details--------
System.Net.WebException: The request failed with HTTP status 401: Access Denied.

Anyone have any ideas? I've searched Google for quite a while trying to find something that would help me figure this out, but thus far I've not been able to come up with anything. Any help (or pointers to something on teh web somewhere that I might have missed) would be appreciated!!

Reporting Services :: SSRS Report Runs In Visual Studio But Not Report Manager

Jul 5, 2012

I have written a report visual studio.  The report has 10 multi-value parameters that pull data from their individual data sets within the reports.  When running the report from within Visual Studio it renders fine.  There are no errors reported, only a warning related to a pathname I have use to retrieve image data and display on the report.Deployment of the report is error free. When I view the report I briefly get the "Loading" splash window, but then nothing.  None of the headers or static text is displayed.  The results window is blank.

The report defaults all the parameter values.  In trying to debug the issue I have found by reducing the number of parameter values the report will render.  Once I have all the values added, the report does nothing.Below is the query being used for the report.  The where clause in the query shows the parameters being used and the syntax. We are running on Windows Server 2008 R2 and SQL Server 2008 R2.

Deny Builtin/administrators Full Access To Report Services Report Manager 2005

I need to prevent domain and local administrators from having full control over our report manager. (I want them to be assigned permissions just like everyone else, some reports they can see other reports they can not.)

How can I accomplish this? I tried going into Report Manager -> Site Settings -> Configure Site Wide Security and re-assigning BUILTINAdministrators to the System User role instead of the System Administrator role. (A different set of report manager admins was given the system administrator role).

However, it appears that members of the BUILTINAdministrators group still have full control in Report Manager.

[Reporting Services 2005] Access Impossible Of The Report Server

Hello,

SQL Server Reporting Services 2005 (SSRS) is installed on Vista Ultimate.
I cannot access to the http://localhost/ReportServer page. IE posts an internal error HTTP 500.0 (after IE required a Windows account).
All the configurations of Reporting Services are OK. In the Log file, there is nothing: the Web Services does not seem to be launched.

By continuing the investigations in IIS 7 (activation of the Rules of follow-up of the requests having failed?, I found the error following:

IIS Trace Detail Highlights
No. EventName Details Time
53. MODULE_SET_RESPONSE_ERROR_STATUS Warning
ModuleName="IsapiModule", Notification="EXECUTE_REQUEST_HANDLER", HttpStatus="500", HttpReason="Internal Server Error", HttpSubStatus="0", ErrorCode="Syntaxe du nom de fichier, de répertoire ou de volume incorrecte. (0x8007007b)", ConfigExceptionInfo="" 09:02:33.716

Translation of the french sentence: ErrorCode="Incorrect syntax of the file name, the directory or the volume."

I made a full research on Internet and in the documentation at my disposal and I did not find anything which can advance me towards a beginning of solution

Thank you with all for the assistance which you will be able to bring to me.
