I have many stored procs in my database and I can call them just by
their name uspMyProc with success always. However, I just created a
user function ufnMyFunction as the same user that I created my procs
but when I call ufnMyFunction it fails unless I preface it with dbo. .
How come the stored proc does not require this but the stored function
does?

I wonder if windows update has installed some securitypatch that is causing it.The problem is that I am calling a stored procedure via an ASP(classic, not .NET) , but nothing happens. The procedure doesn't work,and I don't get any error messages.I've tried dropping and re-creating the user and permissions, to noavail. If it was a permissions problem, there would be an errormessage. I trace the calls in Profiler, and it has no complaints. Thedatabase is getting the stored proc call.I finally got it to work again, but this is not a viable solution forour production environment:1. response.write the SQL call to the stored procedure from the ASPand copy the text to the clipboard.2. log in to QueryAnalyzer using the same user as used by the ASP.3. paste and run the SQL call to the stored proc in query analyzer.After I have done this, it not only works in Query Analyzer, but thenthe ASP works too. I'm running mssql 2005. And any stored procedure I create in the master database gets created as system procedures since recently. I have created procs in the master database as user procs previously. As sp_MS_upd_sysobj_category is not supported in mssql 2005, does anyone know why this is happening.. or how I can rectify it??

creates a new user
deletes data from old temp table
Then I need to create a stored procedure that executes dynamically to
drop old users
remove the old user account access
We are running SQL Server 2000.

I just found out that when I create a user defined scalar function, I must call it using dbo.[myFunctionName]. Why won't it work w/out dbo? Why are stored procedures able to use omit dbo?
Also, what is dbo specifying? I'm very unfamiliar with sql server security. Is this the user, schema, role? What's a schema? lol. Thanks.

I am working with an application unde mssql 6.5 ,sp4. We have a separate
database for reporting on a different box. Each night we load a backup into
the database from the production database.
I set up a stored procedure to kill all users connected to this reporting
database just before the load.
THe job looks like this under scheduled tasks as a cmdexec:

The killusersall is paramaterize sp that I pass the dbid of the database
for whom I want all users killed. I need to put the stored procedure in the
master because I egt the spid from sysprocesses.
I do not understand why the job died. Does it matter if I named the stored
procedure as sp_killusersall instead of killusersall_sp which I used.
Can any one advise me about how to get the job to run? Any assistance will
be greatly appreciated. Thanks you.

Please forgive the simplicity of this question - I am not the dba type. When I connect to a server and look at my connection attributes in activity monitor, the user column shows the correct information for my domainusername. When I run a certain stored procedure in that connection, the domainusername changes to another person. We are not using execute as, setuser, or anything special to explicitly change the user. The stored procedure is in a schema that is owned by dbo (principal_id = 1 - I verified by checking sys.database_principals.)
Does anyone have any suggestions?

I get error that says
"Cannot find either column "dbo" or the user-defined function or aggregate "dbo.getid", or the name is ambiguous."

Procedure, The SP then calls a user defined function that runs SQL, this
returns a 1 or 0 to the SP which then returns the value back to the call on
the asp page. This is a lot I know but it is the way the lead guy wants it
done. Any help so I can keep most of the hair I have left is appreciated :-)

2. rx_sp_HasAccessToClient then calls ab_HasAccessToClient

I am working with a large application and am trying to track down a bug. I believe an error that occurs in the stored procedure isbubbling back up to the application and is causing the application not to run. Don't ask why, but we do not have some of the sourcecode that was used to build the application, so I am not able to trace into the code.
So basically I want to examine the stored procedure. If I run the stored procedure through Query Analyzer, I get the following error message:
Msg 2758, Level 16, State 1, Procedure GetPortalSettings, Line 74RAISERROR could not locate entry for error 60002 in sysmessages.
(1 row(s) affected)
(1 row(s) affected)
I don't know if the error message is sufficient enough to cause the application from not running? Does anyone know? If the RAISERROR occursmdiway through the stored procedure, does the stored procedure terminate execution?
Also, Is there a way to trace into a stored procedure through Query Analyzer?

I went in Tools>Opetions>DataBase tools>Data Connection>Sql Server Instance Name (blank for default)

I am having trouble executing a stored procedure on a remote server. On my
local server, I have a linked server setup as follows:
Server1.abcd.myserver.comSQLServer2005,1563
This works fine on my local server:
Select * From [Server1.abcd.myserver.comSQLServer2005,1563].DatabaseName.dbo.TableName
This does not work (Attempting to execute a remote stored proc named 'Data_Add':
Exec [Server1.abcd.myserver.comSQLServer2005,1563].DatabaseName.Data_Add 1,'Hello Moto'
When I attempt to run the above, I get the following error:
Could not locate entry in sysdatabases for database 'Server1.abcd.myserver.comSQLServer2005,1563'.
No entry found with that name. Make sure that the name is entered correctly.
Could anyone shed some light on what I need to do to get this to work?

Hi All,Quick question, I have always heard it best practice to check for exist, ifso, drop, then create the proc. I just wanted to know why that's a bestpractice. I am trying to put that theory in place at my work, but they areasking for a good reason to do this before actually implementing. All Icould think of was that so when you're creating a proc you won't get anerror if the procedure already exists, but doesn't it also have to do withCompilation and perhaps Execution. I have about 5 stored procedures that, among other things, execute exactly the same SELECT statement
Instead of copying the SELECT statement 5 times, I'd like each stored proc to call a single stored proc that executes the SELECT statement and returns the resultset to the calling stored proc
The SELECT statement in question retrieves a single row from a table containing 10 columns.
Is there a way for a stored proc to call another stored proc and gain access to the resultset of the called stored proc?
I know about stored proc return values and about output parameters, but I think I am looking for something different.

Can we do that? I know that doing this in SQL server would throw (nested EXECUTE not allowed). I dont want to go re-writing the spSQL in C# again, I just want to get whatever spSQL returns and then work with the result set to do row-level computations, thereby avoiding to use cursors in spSQL.

I am trying to debug stored procedure using visual studio. I right click on connection and checked 'Allow SQL/CLR debugging' .. the store procedure is not local and is on sql server.
Whenever I tried to right click stored procedure and select step into store procedure> i get following error
"User 'Unknown user' could not execute stored procedure 'master.dbo.sp_enable_sql_debug' on SQL server XXXXX. Click Help for more information"
I am not sure what needs to be done on sql server side
We tried to search for sp_enable_sql_debug but I could not find this stored procedure under master.
Some web page I came accross says that "I must have an administratorial rights to debug" but I am not sure what does that mean?
