Wrapping A Dynamic Sql Call In A Select
Mar 13, 2008
I'm expecting to revamp some stored procs so that their selects are executed on a dynamic string that always returns the same columns but varies the sources.
I'm concerned that the bread and butter of products like RS and SSIS is the ability to predict what columns, and what column types to expect from a query, but that introducing dynamic sql will complicate using them.
I'm motivated not to use temp tables or table vars if possible. I'm also somewhat motivated to learn of a solution that works equally well in 2000 and 2005.
I've tried wrapping dynamic calls in a select as shown below but to no avail...
After€¦
declare @sqlString nvarchar(4000)
set @sqlString = 'select * from [' + @dbName + '].[dbo].[activity]'
I€™ve already tried things like€¦.
select a.* from exec sp_executesql @sqlString a
and
select * from exec (@sqlString)

I developed one DLL in vb .Net which call two web services (sql endpoints) I wish to use this solution but for hundreds of servers (endpoints) I want to ask if I could do that with dynamic parameters passed to de DLL CALL in sql server clr.
Actually when I compile de DLL I need to have referenced (hardcoded) the webservices (endpoints) and when I need a brand new endpoint I need to reference it, compile the dll and release.
I cannot find how to invoke the service within the DLL with the namespace or webservice name as parameter.
Mi code to invoke now my referenced end point is: (note that my endpoint name is rperez)
Dim CallWebService As New rperez.IntelisisServiceEndPoint
CallWebService.Credentials = System.Net.CredentialCache.DefaultCredentials
Call CallWebService.IntelisisService(ArchivoOriginal)
My class rperez.IntelisisServiceEndPoint is referenced (hardcoded) in the dll project I need it dynamic
Do I need to change my code to PROXY object ?

Hello,
i am pretty new to asp. I am trying to do a select statement for sending an email to everyone who is not an admin. the code is below, i know it must be fairly simple, yet i do not know how to do it. With the code below, I select everyone. I want to know how to do it properly, similar to the second which does not work.
Dim cmd As New OleDbCommand("SELECT Username, Pass, Gender, FirstName, LastName, Email, NickName FROM tblUsers", conn)
DOES NOT WORK:
Dim cmd As New OleDbCommand("SELECT Username, Pass, Gender, FirstName, LastName, Email, NickName FROM tblUsers WHERE Admin = 'N'", conn)
Thanks in advance.

Is there a way to call a stored procedure within a SELECT statement?Example;-----------SELECT FirstName, LastName, (EXEC UniqueID_KEYGEN @keyval output) AS UniqueIDINTO #tNewEmployeeFROM EmployeeTable-----------SELECT *FROM #tNewEmployeeThe return from the temp table would have a unique ID ready to insert into another table. Our DBA has this stored procedure to create unique ID's and is to be used on all INSERTS. I was used to having a Identity field do this for me, I don't know why we have to do it his way. Except for the reason of sequence and easily get the next record. But we don't use URL variables, only FORM or SESSION.Thanks for your help in advance.

Can this be done? I want to call a stored procedure from inside a select statement. Since you can nest select statements, I thought it might be possible but I have no idea how to do it.
USE NORTHWIND
GO
CREATE TABLE tbA (
Item int NOT NULL,
Value int NOT NULL
) ON [PRIMARY]
GO
INSERT INTO tbA (Item, Value)
SELECT 1, 10 UNION ALL
SELECT 2, 5 UNION ALL
SELECT 3, 2
GO
CREATE PROCEDURE usp_SquareIt
@iItem int
AS
declare @iValue int
SELECT @iValue = Value FROM tbA
SELECT @iValue * @iValue AS Result
GO
SELECT Item,
EXECUTE usp_SquareIt Item AS Squared ---- can this be done
FROM tbA
GO
DROP TABLE tbA
GO
DROP PROCEDURE usp_SquareIt
GO
Any thoughts?

I am using Enterprise Manager to generate a script of the stored procedures on my database. Under File|Options, I selected Windows Text(ANSI). The file which is generated contains all stored procedures, but there are some procedures which are so long that they wrap to the next line.
When I then try to run this script from ISQL in a batch file, those procedures which wrap error out. Is there any way to generate the script in a more formatted manor, avoiding the wrapping?

In some text boxes within the table header, I want to force the text to wrap. This would be comparable to using Alt+Enter in Excel. For example, the text box may read like this...
Customer
Install Date
but I want it to look like this...
Customer
Install
Date
Thanks.

Hello All,
In my report, I have a Matrix control placed next to a table. It renders properly and displays data aligned in two controls in Visual Studio Preview. However, when I deploy to production, it wraps the matrix control below the table, in fact puts the entire matrix control underneath the table. Why such strange behavior and not in the Preview of the report but only in Production? Any ideas how to fix this?
In VS Env. Preview --> [Table][Matrix]
In Report Svr Prod --> [Table]
[Matrix]
Thanks,

Hello I was very happy to have found the thread http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=491642&SiteID=1 that explained how to get the text to display Bottom-to-Top/Left-to-Right.
The solution was to setup a function that creates a bitmap the text to be displayed.
This works well and correctly displays the text image in HTML and PDF. (Excel, XML and CVS won't export backgroud images).
To extend the solution to wrap text it requires a few additional lines...
Code Snippet
Function LoadImage3(ByVal stText As String)
stText = stText.PadRight(10)
stText = stText.PadLeft(10)
Dim iMaxLength as Integer = 180
Dim iMaxWidth as Integer = 180
Dim f As Drawing.Font = New Drawing.Font("Arial",7, System.Drawing.FontStyle.Regular, System.Drawing.GraphicsUnit.Point)
Dim bmpImage As New Drawing.Bitmap(1, 1)
Dim MyGraphics As Drawing.Graphics = Drawing.Graphics.FromImage(bmpImage)
Dim imageSize As Drawing.SizeF = MyGraphics.MeasureString(stText, f)
Dim i As New System.Drawing.Bitmap(iMaxWidth, iMaxLength)
Dim g As Drawing.Graphics = Drawing.Graphics.FromImage(i)
Dim rectF1 As New Drawing.Rectangle(-(iMaxWidth/2),-(iMaxLength/2),iMaxWidth,iMaxLength )
g.FillRectangle(Drawing.Brushes.White, 0, 0, i.Width, i.Height)
g.TranslateTransform((iMaxWidth/2), (iMaxLength/2) )
g.RotateTransform(270.0F) 'flip the image 270 degrees
g.DrawString(stText, f,Drawing.Brushes.Black, rectF1)
g.DrawRectangle(New Drawing.Pen(Drawing.Color.White, 1), rectF1)
g.Flush()
Dim stream As IO.MemoryStream = New IO.MemoryStream
Dim bitmapBytes As Byte()
i.Save(stream, System.Drawing.Imaging.ImageFormat.Jpeg) 'Create bitmap
bitmapBytes = stream.ToArray
stream.Close()
i.Dispose()
Return bitmapBytes
End Function
Items highlighted in yellow reflect changes made to orignal solution.
Hope this helps!!

We had finished converting a lot of our reports from Crystal Reports to SSRS. Upon doing so, one report, the customer's invoice has comments in the report that contain (s) at then end of a word to indicate singular or plural. Crystal reports handled the wrap correctly and kept the word together including the (s), but in SSRS, the (s) is being wrapped to the next line, which doesn't look good at all.

I'm building a select string on the fly based on criteria selected by the user. The user is given a data grid with Names and Check Boxes, where they can select multiple names and then either print those selections, or download them to excel. Everything is working fine, except when the Name has an ' in it. For example O'Kelly or St. John's. I know I can take all the 's out of the database, but I'd rather keep the data authentic. Is there a way to manipulate a select string built on the fly accounting for an embedded '?
For example, I build Select * from table where Name IN ('Smith', 'Jones', 'Jordan', 'Bird', 'O'Kelly').... the ' in O'Kelly ends my string and my sql statement blows up.
Any ideas?
Sample Code:<code> For Each SelectedIndex In rsc.SelectedIndexes Counter=Counter + 1 dgAssociates.SelectedIndex = SelectedIndex If Counter = 1 then SelectString = "Select * from Associate_Table where AssociateID IN ('" & dgAssociates.SelectedItem.Cells(16).Text() & "'" Else SelectString &= ",'" & dgAssociates.SelectedItem.Cells(16).Text() & "'" End If Next If Counter > 0 then SelectString &= ")" End If</code>

I need to implement a "dynamic" select query, in which I want that the type and the number of columns are variable/changeable. For example using the parameters of a stored procedures. I would have a client code (written in VB .NET) in which I would choose the columns that I want to display in a DataGridView.
How should I modify the SELECT line or the SP in general to solve the problem??

@iComments nvarchar(1000) = N'%',
@iLanguage nvarchar(50) = N'%'
AS
SELECT i.IDsample, i.Date, i.Article, i.MachineNum, i.TypeMaterial, i.NominalCount, i.Operator, i.Customer, i.Comments, i.Language, r.Um, r.CVm
FROM Identification i JOIN Reports r
ON (i.IDsample = r.IDsample)
WHERE i.Date BETWEEN @iDataInit AND @iDataEnd
AND i.Article LIKE @iArticle
AND i.MachineNum = ISNULL(@iMachineNum, i.MachineNum)
AND i.TypeMaterial LIKE @iTypeMaterial
AND i.NominalCount = ISNULL(@iNominalCount, i.NominalCount)
AND i.Operator LIKE @iOperator
AND i.Customer LIKE @iCustomer

Hi,
I am producing a php report using SQL queries to show the SLA status of our calls. Each call has response, fix & completion targets. If any of these targets are breached, the whole SLA status is set as 'Breach'.
The results table should look like the one below:
CallRef.

Whereas I can pick the results for the first 6 columns from my Select query, the 'SLA Status' column requires the following calculation:
if (due_date < completed_date)
{ sla_status = 'OK';
}
else sla_status = 'Breach';
The Select statement in my query is looking like this...
Select Distinct CallRef, Description, Severity, ProblemRef, Logdate, Status, Due_date, Completed_date;
The problem is that my query is returning multiple entries for each stage of the call (see below), whereas I just want one entry for each call, with SLA status 'Breach' if any of the stages for the call were out of SLA.

In Dot net 2.0 we change using SQLDataSource to Conect with SQLDB.
Now for My case ,the Select SQL is dynamic when differnece user and parameters to the page, So if I want to Update the data input by user,then I must give Update/insert/delelte SQL to SQLDatasource's InsertCommand /UpdateCommand/DeleteCommand .
How to Generate the Insert/update/delete command for the SQLDataSource ? as in dot net 1.1 can use SQLCommandBuilder to generate it,but SQLCommandBuilder just support DataAdeptor not for SQLDataSource, Could any body know how to do it when the SelectCommand is dynamic and need to update data back to DB after edit?

I have a GridView (that uses SqlDataSource1) and a Dropdownlist. Depending upon the value selected on the DropDownList I need to select different stored procedures for the gridview. The problem is that I can do it without taking SqlDataSource1 by using DataSet or DataTable. But, I need to Use SQLDataSource1 for easy way of Header SORTING. So, is there any way to change the SQLDatasource1.SELECT Command dynamically. So that, I can use different queries for the Single DataGrid. I have attached the sample code of the SqlDataSource1 I'm using. I need to change the Command i.e. SelectCommand="usp_reports_shortages" to "usp_reports_shortagesbyID" and "usp_reports_shortagesbyDate" depending on the value selected in the dropdownlist. So, is there any way to do this????<asp:SqlDataSource ID="SqlDataSource1"

ConnectionString="<%$

SelectCommand="usp_reports_shortages" SelectCommandType="StoredProcedure">

I'm looking for a way to use SSRS to display the contents of a returned dataset with 1-n columns. The number of columns is unknown at design time and the datasetview is using a stored procedure with 1 parameter to return the data. Does any one know if RDL supports wildcard(*) characters for field names or if there is another method.
I have this working via a web based custom aspx page but it would be VERY helpful to utilize all the document conversion features the SSRS reports provide via the web.
Thanks for any help.
