Write Code To Combine Two Tables And Then Return Maximum Value Of One Table
Sep 17, 2012
I am TRYING to write code to combine two tables and then return the maximum value of one table, but SQL Server keeps telling me that the column is not valid.... I have added attached screenshots to show that it IS a valid column, so I cannot figure out what is the retarded issue!!
I used a function to create dataset as below: Public Function GetSQLDataSet(ByVal SQL As String) As DataSet ...... MyConnection = New SqlConnection(MyConnectionString) MyCommand = New SqlCommand(SQL, MyConnection) MyDataSet = New DataSet MySQLDataAdapter = New SqlDataAdapter(MyCommand) MySQLDataAdapter.Fill(MyDataSet) ...... End function It works fine. How to code a function to return a dataset in which there are two tables and relationship?
Can Somebody please show me how to acheive this, using the order details in Northwinddatabase or any other good example. as much details as possible. Many Thanks!
I have 2 Columns FirstName and LastName but i need to show it in UI as User Name ,that means i need to combine both First Name and Last name and display both as 1 field namely UserName ,How to query tht ? What shld i use?
I have a package that I have been attempting to return a error code after the stored procedure executes, otherwise the package works great.
I call the stored procedure from a Execute SQL Task (execute Marketing_extract_history_load_test ?, ? OUTPUT) The sql task rowset is set to NONE. It is a OLEB connection.
I have two parameters mapped:
tablename input varchar 0 (this variable is set earlier in a foreach loop) ADO. returnvalue output long 1
I set the breakpoint and see the values change, but I have a OnFailure conditon set if it returns a failure. The failure is ignored and the package completes. No quite what I wanted.
The first part of the sp is below and I set the value @i and return.
Why is it not capturing and setting the error and execute my OnFailure code? I have tried setting one of my parameter mappings to returnvalue with no success.
I am executing a SELECT statement that has about 500 characters of literal characters concatenated with the contents of a field from a table. I am then storing the result to be run as dynamic SQL. I am finding that when run this as select statement in query analyzer, the last part of the literal gets truncated. When I run it as a cursor and store it in a varchar(1000) variable and print the variable everything works fine. In addition when I put the select statement in a stored procedure and return this to a ADO recordset, the resultset is fine as well. But running the stored procedure in query analyzer truncates the results as well. The issue seems to be getting the results of the SELECT in query analyzer. Even running the stored procedure in the SQL area of Enterprise Manager returns a proper result. Has anyone heard of a maximum return from a select in query analyzer?
I have two table, tblCharge and tblSentence, for each charge, there are one or more sentences, if I join the two tables together using ChargeID such as: select * from tblCharge c join tblSentence s on c.ChargeID=s.ChargeID , all the sentences for each charge are returned. There is a field called DateCreated in tblSentence, I only want the latest sentence for each charge returned, how can I do this? I tried to create a function to get the latest sentence for a chargeID like the following: select * from tblCharge c join tblSentence s on s.SentenceID=LatestSentenceID(c.ChargeID) but it runs very slow, any idea to improve it? thanks,
I have an application written in Visual Basic 2008, using a SQL Express 2008 database. This application runs in several locations on stand-alone PC's and there is no network connecting them. I have to maintain a SQL database in a central location an would like to be able to distribute updated tables from that central location by using an USB stick and replace the tables of the same name in the different locations with the updated ones on my USB stick. This I would like to do using code within my VB2008 application.
Can someone please help me on the way to achieve this. Is it possible to give some concrete code examples, as I am a newbie as a SQL Server user.

In Report manger,i am trying to restrict folders and reports for particular persons only like manger can see all the reports,advisor can view only related reports. this can do by using item level security in report manger by creating roles and we can add the users in to the role. but that was not happenning..planning for another way to implement the scenario.
I came to know that we can write scripting in vb.net and we can run thru rs.exe utility in SSRS.
1.But where can i write the vb.net script? 2.How to migrate that code to report manager? 3.Can we debug that code? 4.How to use SOAP API in RS?
Pls reply back..this one i have to do with in one day..
Hi, I am trying to retrive some XML from my SQL server 2005 database. The XML is in a table called "myxml" and it is being stored a native XML. The Field type is "XML". The VB code returns nothing when I select SELECT xml. How ever if i SELECT NAME it displays the correct name from the name field. how do I return the XML to be viewed as XML throught the response.write? Thanks! Here is my Table definition:
Column Name Data Type Allow Nulls
Id Int
xml xml Yes
NAME Nvarchar(50) yes My XML that is stored in the XML field: <ROOT> <CHAPTER> <TITLE>This is a test</TITLE> </CHAPTER> </ROOT> Here is my VB code: Dim myconnection As SqlConnection Dim mycommand As SqlCommand myconnection = New SqlConnection() myconnection.ConnectionString = _ ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings("myxmlConnectionString2").ConnectionString
Dim strSQL As String = "SELECT [xml] FROM myxml WHERE id = 76"
' create SQL command instance mycommand = New SqlCommand(strSQL, myconnection)
Try ' open database connection myconnection.Open() 'execute T-SQL command Dim dr = mycommand.ExecuteReader() While dr.read() Response.Write("<p>" & dr(0).ToString() & "</p>") End While Response.Write("GOT IT")
Catch ex As Exception Response.Write(ex.Message) Response.Write(strSQL) Response.End()
I am a SQL newbie trying to create a registration page. The registration data is stored in "tblUsers," and the username is stored in the field named "UID" -- which is the primary key. If the user enters a username that already exists in the database, I want to return the "That username already exists" message and keep them on the registration page. If the username doesn't exist, I want to write all their registration info to the database.
I tried the code below using both an existing username and then using a username that didn't exist. Both times I got the "that username already exists" error message on the top of the confirmation page, and the record was not written to the database.
I also tried changing the "If objRec.RecordCount <> 0" to "If objRec.RecordCount >0" I got it to write to the database if the username didn't exist, but if the username did exist, I got the microsoft error '80040e14' (The changes you requested to the table were not successful because they would create duplicate values...)
I have two tables in MS SQL 2000 that I need to combine into one. they will share 3 columns and the rest will stay the same. the existing tables are very large and I REALLY don't want to plug in all the data by hand...Any nifty tricks??? I found software but dont want to spend $$ on it.
Here is my dilemma, i'm trying to combine the results of two different tables. Both tables are very similar but the data returned must be sorted before they are combined because I'm only returning the top xx records based on a hits column.
I have tried the following union query which combines the two RS's then sorts the data: SELECT Top 2 ID, Song, Hits FROM Table1 UNION SELECT Top 2 ID, Song, Hits from Table2 Which would return the first two records from each then sort them like this: 2 - tb1SONG 2 - 1459 1 - tb2SONG 1 - 412 1 - tb1SONG 1 - 356 2 - tb2SONG 2 - 85
I would like to sort based on the hits column then combine the RS producing this: 3 - tb2SONG 3 - 2035 2 - tb1SONG 2 - 1459 4 - tb1SONG 4 - 965 5 - tb2SONG 5 - 745
Any ideas or solutions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Im trying to combine 2 unrelated tables to create a new table with all the data. Both tables have the same number of rows. if i have 2 tables with 1 column each and 5 rows in each column, eg.
tb1 c1: 1 2 3 4 5
tb2 c2: a b c d e
if i run the query
SELECT tb1.[c1], tb2.[c2] INTO tb3 FROM tb1, tb2
i get tb3: c1: c2: 1 a 1 b 1 c 1 d 1 e 2 a 2 b 2 c ........
I'm wanting to migrate an existing customer's database into a new products db. The previous contractor used seperate tables for each product type, where I chose to use one "products" table.
My challenge has been that the previous db uses attributes that aren't common across all products. Would it be best to do a products_attribute table? If so, how would I query the previous products db and seperate the information during an insert between "product A" and "product A attributes"?
I am new to SQL Server development, but I use the automated features in Enterprise Manager a lot.
I have a table with a specific format already existing in a SQL Server 2000 database. This is generated once a day from a flat file received from an outside vendor. I am now receiving a similar flat file from another vendor which is nearly identical, but with two differences.
First, the new flat file is missing two columns (not critical data).
Next, there is one column that is out of order in comparison to the other flat file (aside from the 2 missing columns).
I need a generic example of how to remove specific records from a table and add these new ones (from the new flat file) through the SQL Server. My intention is to have a job run at a specific time through the SQL Server.
Any help is appreciated. If you know of a good tutorial or something out there, I would be more than happy to check it out. Thank you so much for your help!

I want to include the status field from 3rd and 4th table.
I have 2 tables. first table contains name and age and the second table contains class and roll num. I have a 3rd table which contains all these 4 columns. Now I want to fill the 3rd table with the 1st and 2nd table's data.
hi there, i have been wrestling with this for quite a while, as in my other post http://forums.asp.net/t/1194975.aspx, what someone advised me was to put in try catch blocks ot see whats going on, problem is i have never really done it whit this kinda thing before, and i was wondering if someone could point me in the right direction.
For example where would i put the try catch block in here, to show me if its not working public int getLocationID(int ProductID, int StockLoc) { // Gets the LocationID (Shelf ID?) for the stock column and product id // passed // The SQL will look Something like: string strSQL; strSQL = "SELECT " + " location" + StockLoc + " " + "FROM " + " tbl_stock_part_multi_location " + "WHERE " + " stock_id = " + ProductID;string sConnectionString = "Data Source=xxxxx;Initial Catalog=xxxx;User ID=xxxx;Password=xxxxx"; SqlConnection objConnGetLocationID = new SqlConnection(sConnectionString);SqlCommand sqlCmdGetLocationID = new SqlCommand(strSQL, objConnGetLocationID); objConnGetLocationID.Open();int intLocation = Convert.ToInt32(sqlCmdGetLocationID.ExecuteScalar()); return intLocation; }
