Im trying to insert a record in my sql server 2005 express database. The following function tries that and without an error returns true. However, no data is inserted into the database...Im not sure whether my insert statement is correct: I saw other example with syntax: insert into table values(@value1,@value2)....so not sure about thatAlso, I havent defined the parameter type (eg varchar) but I reckoned that could not make the difference....Here's my code: Function CreateNewUser(ByVal UserName As String, ByVal Password As String, _ ByVal Email As String, ByVal Gender As Integer, _ ByVal FirstName As String, ByVal LastName As String, _ ByVal CellPhone As String, ByVal Street As String, _ ByVal StreetNumber As String, ByVal StreetAddon As String, _ ByVal Zipcode As String, ByVal City As String, _ ByVal Organization As String _ ) As Boolean 'returns true with success, false with failure Dim MyConnection As SqlConnection = GetConnection() Dim bResult As Boolean Dim MyCommand As New SqlCommand("INSERT INTO tblUsers(UserName,Password,Email,Gender,FirstName,LastName,CellPhone,Street,StreetNumber,StreetAddon,Zipcode,City,Organization) VALUES(@UserName,@Password,@Email,@Gender,@FirstName,@LastName,@CellPhone,@Street,@StreetNumber,@StreetAddon,@Zipcode,@City,@Organization)", MyConnection) MyCommand.Parameters.Add(New SqlParameter("@UserName", SqlDbType.NChar, UserName)) MyCommand.Parameters.Add(New SqlParameter("@Password", Password)) MyCommand.Parameters.Add(New SqlParameter("@Email", Email)) MyCommand.Parameters.Add(New SqlParameter("@Gender", Gender)) MyCommand.Parameters.Add(New SqlParameter("@FirstName", FirstName)) MyCommand.Parameters.Add(New SqlParameter("@LastName", LastName)) MyCommand.Parameters.Add(New SqlParameter("@CellPhone", CellPhone)) MyCommand.Parameters.Add(New SqlParameter("@Street", Street)) MyCommand.Parameters.Add(New SqlParameter("@StreetNumber", StreetNumber)) MyCommand.Parameters.Add(New SqlParameter("@StreetAddon", StreetAddon)) MyCommand.Parameters.Add(New SqlParameter("@Zipcode", Zipcode)) MyCommand.Parameters.Add(New SqlParameter("@City", City)) MyCommand.Parameters.Add(New SqlParameter("@Organization", Organization)) Try MyConnection.Open() MyCommand.ExecuteNonQuery() bResult = True Catch ex As Exception bResult = False Finally MyConnection.Close() End Try Return bResult End FunctionThanks!

SQL server 2005 express reporting problem.
error message:
This feature "remote access to report data sources and/or the report server database" is not supported in this edition of reporting service
I got this error message when I try to connect to database hosted in another PC running SQL server 2000.
Is it true that SQlL server Express can only use Local Database Engine to host the database?

Hi am very new with VB.net (Visual Studio 2005) and the first time try to use the sql server 2005 express. I did create a trial.mdf (local server) and complete procedure to attach the trial1.mdf in Microsoft SQL Management Studio Express.
I try to use VB to connect /open/close it with the following codes: (but failed)
-----------------------------------------------
Imports System.Data.SqlClient
Public Class Form1
'Link database
Dim DB_Location = "c:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLDataTrial1.mdf"
Dim MyConnection = "Server=localhost; DataBase= " & DB_Location & "Integrated Security=SSPI"
Dim sqlConnection As New SqlConnection(MyConnection)
'Use database
Dim strSQL As String = "SELECT FROM Trial1 WHERE col2 = 'trial' "
Dim cmd As New SqlCommand(strSQL, MyConnection)
sqlConnection.Open() ' ----> error
cmd.ExecuteNonQuery() ' ----> error
sqlConnection.Close() ' ----> error
End Class
-------------------------------------------
At the last 3 line of codes I got the errors ... can someone explain why & help me to correct it?
Thanks for any help

Hi all, first post on Microsoft forums. Our agency is attempting to implement Reporting Services as a reporting platform (for both canned & ad hoc reports) for a system we're developing, and I'm running into some major problems with the ad hoc (Report Builder) portion.
To provide better context, let's set up an example. Say I'm tracking complaints filed by consumers against businesses. A complaint can be filed by multiple consumers against multiple businesses. There is a many-to-many relationship between consumer & complaint, and a many-to-many relationship between business & complaint. So the database would look something like this:
Consumer (PK: consumer_id)
Complaint (PK: complaint_id)
Business (PK: business_id)
ConsumerLink (FKs: consumer_id & complaint_id)
BusinessLink (FKs: business_id & complaint_id)
In my first attempt at making a model, I have flattened ConsumerLink with Consumer, and BusinessLink with Business. So I end up with 3 views:
Complaint (PK complaint_id)
Consumer (PK consumer_id, FK complaint_id)
Business (PK business_id, FK complaint_id)
Note that due to the flattening of the link tables, there may be some duplicate consumers & businesses in the above views if they are related to more than one complaint, which is fine.
Now comes the question. I want to build an ad hoc query that lets me enter a business name and show all consumers that have filed a complaint against it. In SQL this would be a very simple query:
SELECT b.business_id, b.name, c.complaint_id, co.consumer_id, co.name
FROM
Business b
LEFT JOIN BusinessLink bl ON b.business_id = bl.business_id
LEFT JOIN Complaint c ON bl.complaint_id = c.complaint_id
LEFT JOIN ConsumerLink col ON c.complaint_id = col.complaint_id
LEFT JOIN Consumer co ON col.consumer_id = co.consumer_id
WHERE
b.business_name = 'criteria'
However, because the Complaint table has an OptionalMany relationship with both tables, Report Builder prevents you from adding both tables to the same ad hoc report. As soon as you drag one of the two onto the report, it becomes your new "top level table" on the table tree, and you cannot drag the other table over anymore. Now, I understand that it makes sense to prevent the user from, say, trying to show all the consumers and businesses associated with a particular complaint in the same dataset, since that would result in a cartesian join and potentially lots of duplication. However, that's not what we're trying to show, we're trying to show all the businesses that match a criteria, all the complaints for those businesses, and all the consumers for those complaints.
After some research, I discovered this thread which describes the same problem:
http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=175657&SiteID=1
The solution proposed there was to drag the complaint & consumer tables onto the report, and add the business name as a filter only. Unfortunately, this is not good enough. If there is more than one business which matches the name you provide, you have no way of knowing which business is associated with which complaint. All you get is a list of complaints and the consumers associated with them.
Am I doing something wrong in the views/model? Is there any way around this without flattening the whole thing into a huge data warehouse with massive cartesian joins and do reporting against that? At this point, I'm sooner willing to accept excessive data as a cost of flexible reporting. I'm a huge believer that there's an elegant solution to any problem though, and none of the above are elegant.
Thanks,
Alex

When it changes group 1, the text for second group is alway wrong for the first row in the list. It always shows the text that was displayed for the first row of the previous group1.
Here is what it looks like. Has anyone else seen this? Please tell me there is a solution and that matrix reports aren't just broken ...

Hi
I am making a report in Visual Studio. I€™m making a matrix report. I have made a UNION of 2 tables. One of them has a field called Date and the other one does not. But to make a UNION of these 2 tables so that the results are printed in a Matrix I have to have the same fields€™ aliases at least. So what I did is that in the second table is:
SELECT €˜ €˜ AS €˜Date€™
Right?
Now, in the report the first table gives me the dates in a format:
=Format(Fields!Estimated_Close_Date.Value, "yyyy-MM-dd")
But, the second table is it doesn€™t have a date in that field when I run the report it gives me:
1900-01-01
Something I don€™t want.
So, how do I make it understand that the second tables date field is suppose to be empty?

In my report I have two date parameters, both are of type DateTime.
The problem is that when the report is called for the first time the report parameter value is not shown in the expected format (de-DE, 01.01.2007) but in en-US 01/01/2007
Only when I change a Date using the calendar popup and click on the "show report" button, the right format will be taken over.
Language properties of the report are"=User!Language"
IE language is de-DE.
Report Server is a MS Windows Server 2003 R2 Standart Edition SP2
with MS SQL SERVER 2005 SP2
P.S.
on a server with MS SQL SERVER 2005 SP1, this report works fine.
may be this bug is a new feature of SP2?

The error happens on Reporting Service version 9.00.3017.00 (the version we are running in Production). The Reporting Service and its database are actually resided in the same physical server. And the strange thing is that it does not prevent any functionalities or features working except when I launch the Management Studio on that server, it usually takes 2 minutes to load up. Can any one help?

I am running SQL Reporting Services and SQL Server 2005 on a Windows 2003 server. The configuration has been unchanged for approx. 3 weeks. Suddenly today, reports being accessed via an ASP.NET 2.0 application (on Windows 2003 Server with IIS 6) using a SOAP call to the reportserver became inaccessable. Hi All,
Please help me with this problem. Hoping that someone might experienced and resolved it. I am setting up an SQL job. Job has few steps and one of the step runs a stored procedure. I am trying to select a database name (NYSP) from the pull down menu. I save that and when I open the job properties again and check the step it's selecting another database there (HIPAA) not the one I've selected. Anyone know why this happening?
Thanks a lot,

I simply want to edit and data I have in a database that I made with Express Manager. This worked before .Net 2.0. Now, I have the table displayed as a datagrid with an "edit" pushbutton associated with each row in the database table. When I click on the "edit" pushbutton to edit a specific row in the database table, instead of posting me to a page where the chosen row is editable, I am posted back to the same page without the chosen row availible to be edited.
What am I doing wrong? How can I fix this? I am totally new to this so any help would be appreciated.

I have set up mirroring in high availability mode (principal, mirror, and witness).
After setting up mirroring, I needed to adjust the size of a column in one of my tables. I did so with the following command
ALTER TABLE OrderOptimizer.dbo.rCodes ALTER COLUMN CodeDescription VARCHAR(8000).
The column was initially VARCHAR(128)
When I look at the table structure it shows that the column is now VARCHAR(8000), however I can only enter 128 characters into the field.
I forced a failover to look at the table on the mirrored version. It too showed that the column was VARCHAR(8000).
If I open the table I can enter more than 128 characters into the field, however when I refresh, it is truncated to 128 characters,
Any help would be appreciated

I've configured log shipping to use for DR purposes. I'm concerned that the physical location of the secondary is mis-reported by SQL Server Management Studio.
Viewing the secondary location (with Studio DB_name Properties Files) shows the path of the primary DB (I expected it to show the path of the secondary).
This SQL command shows the correct/actual paths of both primary and secondary DB's when run on their host servers.
SELECT name, physical_name AS CurrentLocation, state_desc FROM sys.master_files
Is this just cosmetic?
Here is an Example of how the Studio shows the incorrect path for the secondary.
Example:
(Primary) servername=prodSrv, DBname=aquaDB, Actual_Path=G:aquaDB, SQL-studio-Properties-Path=G:AquaDB, sys.master_files Path=G:AquaDB,
Log shipped to
(Secondary / Read Only) servername=DRSrv, DBname=aquaDB, Actual Path=F:aquaDR, SQL-studio-Properties-Path=G:AquaDB(WRONG), sys.master_files Path=F:aquaDR

I'm setting up a simple SSRS implementation for a non-profit organization, using two servers hosted at a data center. The first server has SQL Server Standard Edition and Reporting Services installed. I've designed and deployed a number of useful reports on this server.
I was hoping to isolate this first server by installing IIS and SSRS on the second server, have users browse from the Internet to that second server (over SSL, of course), and have all reports served up from databases (and, presumably, the report server database) on the first server.
During the installation of SSRS on the second server, however, I'm being prompted to specify the service account. According to the help text:
"Reporting Services. Service accounts are used to configure a report server database connection. Choose a domain user account if you want to connect to a report server database on a remote SQL Server instance. If you are using a local report server database, you can use a domain user account or Local System to run the service."
I believe I want to configure SSRS to connect to a report server database on a remote SQL Server instance; therefore, it appears that I need to enter a domain user account. The only problem is, neither server belongs to a domain; they are members of a simple two-server workgroup.
Does SSRS, configured to connect to a report server database on a remote SQL Server instance, require a domain? Does what I'm hoping to accomplish require a domain? Creating a two-server domain seems like overkill for this implementation, doesn't it?
I appreciate any comments and suggestions. Thanks!

We have a new server (SRV63) and I followed the instructions at http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms156421.aspx to move the report server database from our old server (SRV38). Everything appeared OK, however, when I went to initialize the instance in the Reporting Services Configuration tool, it shows an initialized instance (checkbox is checked) for SRV38 and and uninitialized instance for SRV63 (checkbox is not checked). Please note that I am not trying to create a scale-out deployment. I tried to initialize SRV63 but received the error below.
--------------------
ReportServicesConfigUI.WMIProvider.WMIProviderException: The report server installation is not initialized. (rsReportServerNotActivated)
at ReportServicesConfigUI.WMIProvider.RSReportServerAdmin.ThrowOnError(ManagementBaseObject mo)
at ReportServicesConfigUI.WMIProvider.RSReportServerAdmin.InitializeReportServer(String installationId)
------------------
This is the only thing stopping me from shutting down SRV38 and bringing SRV63 into production. Can someone assist me with this issue?

I have a database in the SQL 2005 default instance and a report server in a named instance. The database has a symmetric key for decrypting one of the columns. When the report server queries the database I get this error: "Cannot find the symmetric key 'key', because it does not exist or you do not have permission."
I know the symmtric key is there because it works when queried from the same instance. Should the database and report server be in the same instance? Or is there a way to change the permissions so that the report server can access the symmetric key in the other instance?
I might note that the report server is able to access unencrypted data in the other instance. The error only occurs when I try to decrypt data using the symmetric key.

Hail to all the serious Report Server users. Let us all start the documentation effort on Report Server Database (Reporting Services 2005). This will let us work around many problems that occur due to lask of documentation of the RS DB Schema.
Example :
Subscriptions table in the report server database can be used for handling the subscriptions manually. A DML statement coupled with the same on the sysjobs in msdb database can stop corrupt subscriptions (which cannot be modified directly using User Interfaces)
Current Problem
The problem that I am facing is related to the size of the Report Server (it is above 35 GBs, with 422 users) while its counter part with 128 users is only 4 GBs. This is due to a table ServerParametersInstance which is growing in an out-of-bound fashion. The lack of documentation is hurting.
So let us put in some effort & document the RS Database for good.
Any help is greatly appreciated...
