File Explorer Window Crashes / Screen Goes Black For A Few Seconds
Mar 30, 2016
I have Windows 10..Just recently I have found that when I open a folder on my desktop which opens in maximized mode, and then go ahead and click to restore the window to a smaller size, instead of doing so, the window restores to the width of the three buttons at the top (minimize, restore, close) and then the file explorer window crashes and freezes for a few seconds, my screen goes black for a few seconds, then I am returned to the desktop, where the window has closed. Is this a sign of hard drive corruption?
I've done a clean install of Win 10. Games that work perfectly on Win 7 64 bit are crashing consistently on Win 10 Pro 64 bit. I was a system builder for 15 years, but I don't know much about Win 10, and am no expert on advanced trouble shooting.
It only crashes in games. I only play driving games/simulators (Project Cars, Driver SF, Burnout Paradise, and several Need for Speed games). It crashes on every one of them. When it crashes, it's 5-10 mins into game, crashes to white or black screen with no sound. The system does not reboot (even when set to reboot on errors). It simply hangs with a white or black screen and no sound. Keyboard strokes no longer work either.
The only thing showing in event viewer is error 41 kernel power (63), which is obviously when I'm manually restarting by holding power or reset buttons.
System is not overclocked other than I like to run my video card fans at 70% with MSI Afterburner (crashed before and after I installed Afterburner)
System is dust free and has good air flow.
I've got several monitoring devices, doesn't appear to be a heat issue with CPU (55C-60C at crash) and video card (57-58C at crash)
Ran MemTest over night, no errors Ran Prime95 over night, no errors Ran Heaven Benchmark overnight, no errors Ran Seatools long test on all hard drives, no errors
Have latest MB drivers and BIOS
Page file is set to physical memory x1.5 and resides on C: with OS.
I've tried complete memory dump, small memory dump, and automatic memory dump - all set to overwrite existing - it never saves a dmp file Ctrl/Alt/Del does nothing
I've gone from a Belkin surge protector and straight to the wall power - no difference.
Tried many different drivers for my video card. I completely remove with DDU in safe mode before installing different ones. Older (14.9, 14.8, 14.12, 13.9, and 13.12) drivers do not stop fans and vary between black and white screens at crash - but the latest Crimson (15.201, 15.3, and 16.1.1 Beta) drivers stop the fans during crash like the PCI-E slot has stopped working completely (this seems to be the key to the problem, but I'm lost as to what it might be) .
System specs:
MB: GA-H97-HD3 CPU: Intel i5 4690 (stock cooler) Memory: 2x 4GB GSkill F3-12800CL8 Graphics: AMD Radeon 7850 OC (300MHz/1200MHz) (onboard Intel controller disabled and drivers uninstalled) HDDs: Corsair 256GB SSD with OS (141GB free space), 3x 2TB WD Red for storage (all with at least 40% free space) PSU: Seasonic 520w M1211 Bronze
I have a backup image of Win 7, and everything still works correctly on it. If not for that, I'd think it was the MB PCI-E slot. That, and the tests on hardware seem to imply that it's not a hardware problem.
I have Windows 10 installed on 2 of my 3 computers. A 2 screen video editing machine that I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10 works perfectly - I open Windows Explorer, I either hold the mouse over the left part of a file name, or right click on top of a file name for the dialog menu to come and then click rename, either way I am then able to rename the file to what I want.
But I re-installed (after the successful WIN7 upgrade) Windows 10 over Windows 8.1 on my main 27" HP and like it did the first time whenever I open a Windows Explorer program - whether from the taskbar or from a shortcut - and do the same to rename the file (either hold left or right mouse) so the filename is highlighted and as I start to retype the new file name it just automatically refreshes and reverts back to the original file name.
I have an annoying delay on the use of my computer since upgrading to Windows 10. The most obvious place is when using the file explorer. I get a 2 to 3 second delay on most operations. These would include: dragging a file into a folder, renaming a file, naming a new folder, etc. When I drag a file into a folder, it does not sort the new file, but the file stays at the bottom of the list. Pretty annoying. I see this same delay in quite a few operations.
I have an i7-2700K processor, 16GB ram, a 250 GB Samsung SSD 840 Pro along with a 2 TB storage drive with ample space on both. I did not have this delay in Windows 7 that I upgraded from.
I'm using Windows 10 and I changed all of my When Computer Sleeps settings and my screen still goes black after about 30 seconds of inactivity. Not really sure why this happens because I changed all of the settings for the screen shutting off to never.
I just installed Windows 10, but every time I start up the computer, it will show a black screen before getting to the login screen and then the computer will restart by itself after about 5 seconds.
It does this over and over again.
Some things I've tried:
- I have multiple monitors, so I tried disabling the other in BIOS. Didn't work.
- I tried booting from the integrated GPU rather than my NVidia GPU. Didn't work.
- I unplugged my second monitor. Didn't work.
- I updated my NVidia driver through safe mode. Didn't work.
This is the first issue i have had with windows 10 ever since installing it in august. Ever since yesterday whenever i click on a file in the file explorer window it will gray out and stop working. Unlike the average hang this one will stay grayed out for about 5 to 10 seconds, my screen will go black for about half a second and than everything will be back to normal. I am thinking that this could be a virus but i have run a scan 2 times and nothing showed up. Other than the file explorer not working everything is fine. This is really weird since it only started yesterday and i have never had any issues like this in the 4 years that i have had my computer.
My mother has a HP Touchsmart 600 that I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10. Windows 10 works fine on there, once it finally boots up. I've noticed this scenario. Power Button to turn on computerBIOS DisplaysWindows 10 logo displaysscreen goes completely black for a couple of seconds Screen comes back on, stays dark/gray and I can see my mouse pointer and it moves. The boot process hangs here for several minutes, usually and most of the time, the computer doesn't even go past this point.EVENTUALLY, after several minutes, Windows 10 finally gets to the login screen, if it is going to login.
So I upgraded to Win 10 and so far I like it, but a problem which I find annoying:
Whenever I open file explorer the window tends to move from where I placed it. What I mean is I place the window directly in the center, as I like it. When I open it again, it will be displayed at the very top of the screen. When I close it and open it again it will be displayed at the bottom of the screen on the left. The window seems to change places every time it is opened.
Nothing major, but I am OCD about keeping windows centered and organized haha so is there a way to keep the window in one spot? Is this a bug or is this supposed to happen?
When I right-click on a folder in the Navigation pane (that's the far-left window in File Explorer, right?), I see "Expand" right at the top of the drop-down box. However, it is grayed out.
If I go to File>Change Folder and Search Options, I can turn on Open Each Folder in The Same Window, but it doesn't actually work.
As things stand, if I want to move a file from one folder to another, I have to open a separate window. In all previous versions of Windows, that wasn't necessary, because you could expand all folders right in the navigation pane.
Whenever I right-click a file anywhere on the Desktop, the File Explorer crashes briefly and then comes right back up. This does not happen anywhere else, only on the Desktop.
I tried going to "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT/*/shellex/ContextMenuHandlers" with RegEdit and removing some of them, but to no avail.
Before using 8.1 , when wanting to upload a certain file to a website or where ever , There is a pop up windows that let's you search to file to upload , after clicking the button on that particular website, now in Win 10 , when clicking the button the file search popup (Open dialog box) windows fails to appear and so cannot search and upload the files.
I don't know if this is related to Win10, or an issue that existed with my Win8.1 before. I just noticed it after upgrading yesterday.
So, my firewall just prompted me about an outbound connection attempt by a file (named C:WindowsSystem32SIHClient.exe) and I didn't recognize it. I found it using explorer, and it's unsigned; so I visited VirusTotal.com and tried to upload it... but from the file upload browse box in Chrome I can't see the file! Even typing *.* and open doesn't remove the "filter" and reveal the file. (I finally ended up copying it to desktop and uploading from there, but still don't know what the file does.)
I thought that Explorer's "File View Options" (show hidden files, do not hide operating system files, etc.) were used throughout Windows once applied. Am I wrong? Should I suspect a virus or is this normal? What gives?
My laptop was multibooted with windows 10 preview and windows 7..after 1st restart everythng was normal..but from the next restart my laptop screen is going black instead of showing the window CHOOSE YOUR OPERATING SYSTEM..i can see only the mouse pointer..but by seeig from the 1st restart , i knew that topmost and default option was windows 10 and the lower option was windows 7...
I clicked the topmost place where i used to see the option as windows 10 and then it loaded just like normal, next time i clicked the lowermost option and it started the windows 7..the problem is that i am getting black screen that i am invisible to the option of chooing the operating system..i is now in a condition that i have to click without seeing anything on the screen, but just by imagining.
I'm experiencing a strange problem on my secondary desktop (the crappy Alienware). Randomly, the machine restarts within a mere 5 minutes of it running.
It also restarts just sitting on the login screen, so it doesn't only happen when someone is logged in. It, of course, doesn't do this in Safe Mode.
I recently upgraded to window 10 from window 7 with iso file. I didn't had internet access then, but my window run successfully. Later, when i tried to attach another display with Laptop it did not detect it. So, i installed the windows updates. But after installing i was unable to boot into windows. A black screen with blinking cursor appears right after the Dell Logo. I am only able to go into bios setup by pressing F2, no safe mode option. I tried making a bootable Pen drive for repair but even it wasn't detected. I already change the boot priority in bios menu. Therefore i am unable to fresh install the window as laptop cd drive is not functioning from quite some time.
Installed Build 10565 yesterday and everything works great except Hearts. Event viewer indicated it might be a Java problem so I downloaded the latest Java but that hasn't worked.
After installing and enjoying Windows 10 for a few weeks, I am having problems with the Photo app. I was able to open it up with no problems and it showed me all my pictures but I few days ago, I opened it up and it quit after a few seconds. I kept open it with the same results: it opens , acts as if it is loading some pictures but it quits by itself after about 5-7 seconds.
I am providing with an error report from Windows 10.

When I click on the people app. The app hangs and instantly crashes a few seconds later. Also we are less than 2 weeks until the official release of Windows 10 and they still haven't fixed the people app.
