Accounts :: Local Account Deleted

Jan 1, 2016

My computer crashed and when it rebooted, it required me to login with my Microsoft account. Now, this computer has had a local account since I got it 5 or 6 years ago. I have never used the Microsoft account on this computer.

Trying to switch back to the local user using guides on this site, that local account apparently doesn't exist anymore.

I'm obviously concerned that it deleted an account on its own. How do I get the account back? Creating a new one is easy enough, but are there any permission issues? I have enough of those between Windows 10, and the previous 7 installation.

Accounts :: Hidden Administrator Cannot See Main Local Account

Feb 10, 2016

For one reason or another I managed to delete administrator privileges for my one local account. After several hours messing about I have managed to activate the hidden Administrator - but I am finding that this Administrator is not working.

1. It cannot see my main local user account. It does not list it at all in User Accounts, so I cannot change any settings etc. Similarly, when I open User Accounts with my main account, it cannot see the Administrator, or the new account I created (see below)

2. When I access User Accounts using "netplwiz" it sees my main account but will not highlight it (or any other account). It is stuck on Administrator.

3. It will not create a new account. When I use it to access Accounts and try to add a new user the cursor spins and nothing happens.

4. I added a new user (with administrator privileges) using the command prompt - this was successful, but it bumped my main account off the login page, and it doesn't acknowledge it on the dropdown list with the start menu. (Yet when I restarted it took me straight in to my main account.)

Accounts :: Logging In With Microsoft Account Rather Than Local Administrator Account?

Jan 9, 2016

I would like to use some of the features that require you to log in with a Microsoft account rather than my own local administrator account. But when I did that, it totally changed my settings for my local account including desktop, etc. So I deleted the Microsoft account. how to keep my local account settings when signing in with a Microsoft account.

Deleted Local Disk Permissions

Jul 30, 2015

After I installed win 10 yesterday, I was looking around and I noticed the windows.old file in my local disk. I looked online and saw that it was safe to delete it, but I couldn't because I didn't have permissions. So I followed a youtube tutorial on how to gain permissions, but I performed this on the entire c drive (note that this is my only drive). The video showed that I had to delete all the permission settings previously there. You can kind of see where this is going. So I did then I gave myself permissions. I immediately saw that win 10 started to not function properly. So I tried to re-add system and administrators to the drive permissions. Some of the win 10 functionalities returned and I thought that restarting my pic would fix the rest. But now after the win 10 logo I get a black screen and I can't log in.

Why Can't Access Local Administrator Account

Mar 13, 2016

When I "upgraded" to Windows 10, apparently I set up everything on the local administrator account. When I went to set up a separate account yesterday it disabled me from getting onto the administrator account, which is where I have everything set up. When I go to log in, both accounts are on the log-in screen but it won't take the passwords for the administrator account, which I know are correct and it even gives me the right hints but won't accept the pw. It says, "Your password was changed on a different device and you must sign in to this device once with your new password and then you can sign in with your new PIN. Well, I haven't added any devices, just a new local account. I really need to get back into the administrator account since that is where everything is. I've done the prompt, CMD, net user administrator /active:yes and it just denies access obviously because I am logged in as an administrator.

Local Administrator Account Missing After Upgrading To 10240

Jul 22, 2015

I have been using the win10 previous build for about two months. There were three accounts on the log in page, two local accounts (one Administrator one normal) and one windows account. The system was upgraded to build 10240 through the Administrator. But after it's done there are only two accounts left. The Administrator has gone missing.

There are a lot of software installed under the Administrator account. There are a lot of bookmarks, settings etc as well. So I always use the local Administrator account rather than the windows account. In fact I don't know how to transfer them onto the windows account. But now it's gone. How to restore it?

Accounts :: Can Have Both MS And Local Account

Jan 27, 2016

The last update triggered (13-01-2016) the loss of access to the start menu, many apps, as well the apps store and MS Edge. The exact same thing happened with the first version of Win 10 Pro received as an upgrade from WIN 7.

This time, as soon as build 1511 was received, I immediately created a ISO USB stick and then proceeded to use the machine as normal. At some stage, I created a Local Account with Administrator rights as I am the only user of the PC.

After the January upgrade, I can no longer switch back to the MS Account as the screen where one is supposed to be able to do this under [settings/accounts/Your email and accounts] does not load anymore, thus removing the option to switch back to a MS account. The screen is just blank.

I ended up activating the in-built Administrator account so that I could try and see what was going on.

I now notice under C:users the following user folders:

(1) Administrator
(2) Default
(3) Default.migrated
(4) DefaultAppPool
(5) My Name ---- I presume this is the user profile for my MS account?
(6) My Name (Local ----- This is the created local Account

yet the "name of the account" when I log in has been truncated to My name L

Is this why the settings page for accounts cannot find the profile information which will allow me to switch back to my MS account?

I feel I have to unravel this mess before going any further in trying to establish why the start menu and all the apps have now "dissapeared"

Of course I can just redo the clean install but I feel I should first sort out the user profiles before going any further.

Accounts :: How To Change Administrator Name

Aug 11, 2015

I have encountered many problems to come as I learn Win 10. The first of which is how can I change or edit the administrator's name on my PC. I thought like win-7, I could edit, change, or even turn off password protect.

I find no way to do this, as I'am the only one using my PC, I do not need to sign in with a password every time I fire my PC up. Normally I resort to system restore for most problems, however I don't think that would work in this case.

Accounts :: Only Account Is Not Administrator

Dec 23, 2015

I recently downloaded Windows 10. For some reason, my account on the computer --which is the only account on the computer-- is a 'standard account'. Because of this, I can't download or make some important changes that I need to make. I admit that I'm not computer savvy, but I've tried a few things. I've tried activating the 'hidden' Windows 10 administrator password but I can't because you have to run the cmd as an administrator to do this [when I try it doesn't give me the option to click yes]. I also tried adding family members to my account in order to make those accounts administrators. I created new email addresses, send the invitation, and accepted the invitations, but every time I log on to my Microsoft account, it still states that they invitations are pending.

Accounts :: Can't Create Local User

Feb 10, 2016

I simply wanted to remove a long dead hotmail account from my user sign in account and update it with my current outlook email. Seems innocent enough. After much searching and finally finding out that you simply can't do this logical task, I found the 'magic formula' to achieve my goal. The problem is, Windows gives me an 0x80004005 error code after I complete filling out the information for the Local user, preventing it from being created. So it's not possible to switch to local, then switch back.

Accounts :: Locked Out Of Administrator Account

Dec 26, 2015

I am currently on a different computer than the one where I am locked out of the Administrator account.

Less than 3 weeks ago, I bought a new laptop that came with Windows 10 installed. When I finally set up the new laptop and tried out Windows 10 for the first time, I was annoyed at the whole thing with Windows blocking some programs from being installed and a lot of other annoying prompts. This is when I found out about a higher level of Administrator access known as a Super Administrator to avoid most of these prompts, and install programs without being blocked by Windows. So what I did created a new user account with the Command Prompt and gave it Super Administrator access without setting a password. Once I logged into my new user account, I deleted all of the other user accounts on my computer, since I had no need for the other user accounts (such as the Guest account).

The real trouble happened when my computer crashed and experienced a BSOD. After the computer rebooted from the BSOD, I found out that I could not log into the Administrator account because it prompts for a password, but I never set up a password for the account. Inputting no password does not work. I am not sure how a password was set up on the Administrator account without my knowledge and whether this might have been related to my BSOD crash.

I have made an attempt to get back into my only user account, but nothing has worked so far. All of the built-in Windows diagnostic tools have failed to work, since they all require that I log into the Administrator account, which I am unable to do. My original plan was to use the option to reset my PC that lets me keep my files, but that won't work without having access to the Administrator account. What password is on my Administrator account considering that I never set up a password and somehow the account now has a password on it. How to get back into my Administrator account?

Cannot Create User Accounts In Administrator

Jan 4, 2016

Upgraded my laptop W7 Home Premium (64-bit) to W10 Build 10586. Created a Microsoft account based on e-mail ID. Change my mind and removed MS account in favour of the Administrator account (with password). All attempts to use standard apps (Mail. Edge etc.) give message "xxxx can't be opened using Built-in Administrator. Sign in with a different user account." When I try to create a new MS account using Settings >Accounts >Your emails and accounts >Add email, calendar, contacts account or >> Add workplace or school account, or >> Other users (Family and other users isn't shown) >Add someone else to this PC, the system just hangs with the infuriating revolving circle. Found some complex solutions with recovery images and registry editing.

Accounts :: Locked And Hidden Administrator

Apr 14, 2016

Recently I had to make a change in my computer that required the Elevated Administrator account to be used. I finally figured out how to open that account, did my thing, shut down the Elevated Administrator account, and returned to my standard account. Then I discovered that I must have done something else while in Elevated Administrator mode because after that I could not install or uninstall any program, could Not access System Configuration, could Not access Safe Mode (used the shutdown /r /o command. When I got to the selection window and pressed F4 I waited for 45 minutes with no Safe Mode result), cmd -> "run as administrator" does not work. When using the GUI to work on this (open Elevated Administrator) I get "To continue, type an administrator password, and then click Yes." But there is no place for a password and the Yes button is not active. When I use the command prompt I get an Error 5 message.

Accounts :: Local Account Password Changed?

Feb 10, 2016

I have linked my Windows 10 app store to a BT provided email address. After rebooting it has asked me to login. It has changed my local account from my name to my BT email address and asking for a password. This is not my normal password and has seemed to link my BT account within the Microsoft environment and assigned it a password. I now cannot log in to my PC? I have spoken to Microsoft about 15 times and just keep getting passed around. I have tried resetting the password via Microsoft but it fails every time. Any way i can switch to log in locally via my old password?

Accounts :: Deleted Admin Account And Now Have No Permission To Do Anything

Feb 10, 2016

My girlfriend set up an admin account to block certain websites from me. I idiotically deleted that admin account. Now I am unable to do literally anything without permission from a nonexistent account. Every time I try to run ANYTHING, it grays out the "yes" option and tells me I need to enter the administrator password. I can't even run the command prompt as an admin. When I try to do the "net user administrator /active:no" command, it gives me a system 5 error. I can't restore to a time before she ever made the admin account because it needs permission. I can't reinstall Windows because to run the tool to make a bootable USB, I need permission. And there is NO ACCOUNT to get permission from anymore.
