Jan 20, 2016I just bought a new lap top with Win 10. I have a lot of experience with XP and Win.7 but with 10 I'm a dummy. How can I get it to open and skip to the desk top?

View 1 RepliesMy wife's computer somehow acquired my user name which I had no password for, and she nor I can login into windows 10 on her computer, we can't get past the windows desktop screen.
View 1 RepliesI cannot add any accounts to my mail/calendar app in W10 on my surface Pro 3. Whenever I try to add a gmail/outlook.com account, I get the Something went wrong, error msg 0xXXXXXXX. Both with Gmail and outlook. I tried the solution MS suggested, to add it through the exchange server. But then I get a message that my account is not set-up for Azure AD.
I also tried to uninstall and reinstall the mail/calendar app. Doesn't work.
I also tried to "Turn on TLS1.0-3.0" thingy. They were already on.
All updates are installed.
It works flawlessly on my desktop with W10.
I have a touchscreen laptop and 3 user accounts, one of which is for my children (aged 3 and 5).
I would like to be able to make the default mode for my children's account 'tablet mode' (to make it as simple as possible for them to use and access key apps) while keeping the mode as 'normal desktop mode' for my wife and my accounts.
When I change my kids account to 'tablet mode' (using the switch in the 'Action centre') , when i log back into my account, that also then defaults to tablet mode, which is not what I want. Is there any way of setting different modes depending on the user?
I'm new to Windows 10. How do I pull up the icon of my DVD/CD drive and click on it to open it up in order to put an CD or DVD in and play it?

View 1 RepliesI upgraded to Windows 10 last night and have had nothing but problems. The biggest one is the fact that I cannot open the start menu, I had worked around it by right clicking it and then selecting what I needed from there. However now that doesn't even work.
View 4 RepliesMy desktop icons will not open full size. Each time I open one I have to maximize it to full size.
This has only happened recently, I presume since the last auto update.
How do I reset to open full size automatically.
I don't know if it is a pure coincidence, but yesterday I tried to upload some photos from my Smartphone and this is what's happened! It is very frustrating and I have googled the problem umpteen times with various wording and tried a few of the suggestions (Windows main support page included) but the probem persists. I'm ready to either go down the very tedious route of a clean install of W7 (which I would loathe to do) or chucking my computer out the window which would be even worse!

View 1 RepliesThe thing is that after updating on windows 10 it is unable to open my desktop by minimizing the Start menu, only via windows explorer. Start menu opens always in full-screen mode so I can't resize it (yes, full-screen mode is unchecked in the relevant menu).
View 2 RepliesSince the last win 10 update, my desktop Folder icons do not work right. When I left click I get this
when I right click I get this
The only way I can open a folder (such as Downloads) is to right click, then select open.
I have tried creating new shortcuts and they do not work. Regular program shortcuts work fine. If I create a new short cut to a file, (ie a photo), I have to right click and select OPEN to view the file, then when I create a shortcut, it does not work unless I right click and select open.
I restored system to earlier date and all is well. When restarting computer I get force fed update. Selecting NEW from context menu was not there. I fixed that. Why come I get cmd when I try to open a folder?
Without any third party software: Can I with Windows 10 set new windows to open on the monitor (with dual monitor setup) from which it was launched?
By default Windows opens a new window on the monitor on which it was used last. So if I close file explorer on monitor 1, the launch it from monitor 2's start menu, it will still open on monitor 1 because that is where it was last active, even though I launched it from monitor 2.
I can not access desk top short cuts to open files in office programs. They exist, i can see them on the desk top but do appear when i go to files.
View 2 RepliesAt the first after I upgraded my notebook from windows 8 to windows 10, I just realize that 1 of my 3 user account is not exist anymore (the Guest account is not there just after I upgrade it into windows 10). As I tried to make the new Guest account and still didnt work (I dont want to follow such a complex email registration required by windows 10 to make a new user account), I thought to delete my secondary user account. However, I just realize that there is a file that I saved in the Desktop under my secondary user account. Is there a way to restore this desktop file that is saved in my deleted user account?
I have opened C:Users but I cant find the folder with the name of my deleted user account. It's very important yet big file (around 2 GB).
I'm trying to copy a ripped movie file (iso) from my G drive to desktop. The file is 45GB. It gets to 99% then a message comes up saying the process can't complete because the System has the file open. I have nothing running and can't find anything where the System is accessing/linking to this file.
I thought it might be a permissions issue, so I wanted to download the Reg edit to add a "take ownership" command but the TenFourms link is not working. Take Ownership - Add to Context Menu in Windows 10 <<<< won't open web page.
I ran sfc /scannow and there are some errors reported that could not be fixed. There is a CBS.log file but I have not looked at it yet.
I also ran the DISM /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth (I forget the full command line now) and it came back saying it could not find the files "online".
I have several user accounts on one machine under Windows 10. I would like to re-log-into these user accounts when the machine reboots from an update or from an extended (longer than UPS hold-up) power failure.
I use Thunderbird and have a lot of junk filtering going on which protects my phone from most spam.
I will be moving my two sons to Dropbox and back their stuff up to my NAS units continuously rather than intermittently.
For these accounts, I want the users' accounts to boot when the machine boots so that Dropbox is making a copy to the local HDD. The NAS units take it from there (final sync method TBD).
In no instance do I want a "live" console.
After I automatically log into the accounts, I want the machine left as if I had hit "switch user" after logging into each account--several accounts active and running, but the console waiting for a login.
I have been testing this in principal where I copy images from a friend's Dropbox to her Google Drive and to my NAS units. Right now I have to manually log into the account that does this after each reboot.
For my account, I also wish to start Thunderbird as well as log in. I assume just adding Thunderbird to the StartUp group will work?

I am in the process of bringing 20 machines from W7 and W8.1 to W10. Seven down, thirteen to go. five of the twenty are W8.1, the rest W7.
Since yesterday, I'm unable to switch between user accounts. Button changes from white to blue when hovered, but no response to click.
View 1 RepliesIve upgraded from Win 8 to Win 10.
I had 2 adult local accounts and 2 kids local accounts. I also have the 1 Microsoft account.
I don't want to use the Microsoft account signin on my laptop I want to use my local.
Is there a way to assign the existing local kids accounts to family without having to create new ones ? The kids are worried that if I do this they will lose their existing apps/game settings on the local accounts.
I don't know if it's my installation, but I can't really switch to select a differet login user once I turn on my PC, and it brings to the last logged on user and his Picture password screen.
Both users have a Picture password and I don't have any chance to pick the other one, unless:
- I select a different type of access
- ask for password
- then the damn multi-user LH box appears
- and I can pick another one.
Then do the opposite until I get back to his Picture password screen. Odd and unbelieavable, considering how well streamlined in Win8.1...
The old way I found for Windows 8.x (HERE) is not working anymore, as I went in the Registry of mine upgraded Win10 and found it was already correctly modified (=1), but the login screen is a mess, nonetheless.
I'm ok with Task scheduling batches, reg modification, whatever. But it's Win10 Home, so no gpedit involved..
(it's a Dell Venue 11 Pro)
W10 Pro install. If you go into Settings, Accounts, it does not load.
View 9 RepliesI've got two computers running windows 7. Both have an administrator account and a standard user account. The computer I use for gaming has a third account for gaming (I have some older games that don't like the aero-peak feature so the gaming account uses a plain desktop, no features.)
All these accounts use the same email address.
All these accounts will also use just the one Microsoft account.
My question is, when I upgrade to windows 10, will I be able to create a similar set-up for the user accounts, ie 5 different accounts, but only one email address and one Microsoft account? I've read that windows wants an email address to create a new account, is it going to tell me "that email address/Microsoft account has already been used?"
I am planning to upgrade to windows 10 by doing a clean install and starting from scratch, so I'm not worried about whether or not the existing accounts will transfer over.
My windows (hotmail) account was recently hacked, and is irretrievable. I have created a new windows account, but my windows 10 user is associated with that old account that I no longer have access to.
View 2 RepliesAfter the latest big Windows 10 update today, I see two user accounts have been created, namely "Default" and "Default.migrated" Neither existed beforehand. They both contain quite a few folders and subfolders which at the bottom level are all empty. Can I safely delete these accounts?
Previously I had all Public Folders from the Public Account set to locations off my SSD, now they have been recreated on my SSD and I can't move them apart from "Public Account Pictures" as the option to relocate them is not present even though Windows says they can be relocated - see screenshots.
Can the Public Account be deleted without consequence - I never use it!
is there a way to convert administrative accounts on 8 of my PCs into normal accounts?
Without registry or gpedit.msc access.
But they are currently the only administrative accounts on these PCs.
I want the data in My Documents and Desktop to remain as it is for these accounts.
