View 2 RepliesI set up Ubuntu in dual boot with Win 10 and tried to replace it with Mint, which failed at installation. I then had a "grub rescue" prompt regardless of what I tried. I fixed the mbr by booting from Win 7 .iso and running Bootrec /fixmbr.
I can now boot into Win 10 OK. However, when I first installed Win 10 and dual boot Ubuntu, the Windows 10 selection screen used an icon for Win10 and for Ubuntu. Now the Win10 selection screen is all text, like the original Win 7 screen before Win 10 upgrade. Possibly because I used a Win 7 .iso. I can't find how to get to a dos prompt when booting from Win 10 .iso. It is only cosmetic, but how to restore the Win 10 icon type.
Alright so for some reason ever since I've "upgraded" to Windows 10 from Windows 8.1 I've been having numerous issues with my computer taking a very long time to boot and I've noticed it is logging me in sometimes without asking me for my password at boot. I really want to stop the black screens as waiting 5-10 minutes every time I turn my computer on is annoying. Also I don't see why it would log me in without prompting for my password as why else would I have a logon password?
View 4 RepliesRight, it is clear that the value of live tiles is rather reduced if they don't appear at boot to announce all updates. Especially if you don't want them clogging up the notification centre with stuff less important than emails and other comms. Don't suggest tablet mode. Until W10 works properly with swipes on precision touch pads like the T650 (rather than basic touch pads only like the ones on laptops) touch mode is pretty horrid on desktops.I found the group policy setting to force boot to start screen in W10 but it is bugged and does not work. Until MS get around to fixing it, we need a work around.
All we need is to make a Windows script that runs at boot to bring up the start screen. But how? What is the command to bring up the start screen from Power Shell or Command Prompt? Is there a way to trigger a virtual keypress at start to trigger the start screen?
Make an APP start at boot no splash screen in systray, I don't mind editing my registry as i have done for many other reasons in the past...
View 4 RepliesI have Windows 10 & it just asked to update so I allowed it. Now when my computer restarts, everything seems to work fine, until I get to the sign in screen where it says "please wait" and I get an infinite loading screen. The only thing that works is ctrl+ alt + delete and it gives me this. Still no accounts to sign into. I've tried holding shift + restart but it doesn't seem to do anything. Shift + F8 also does nothing during startup.
View 6 RepliesA terrible malware has infected my computer like a cancer. For every time I try to remove this illness, it damages my system, and leaves me no choice but to keep it on my computer in order to use it!
Basically what's happening with my computer is I will run a scan with malwarebytes and remove the malware on my system. Once I reboot my computer, my internet is gone, kind of. I am able to send PMs over skype and over steam. However, I can't talk in skype groups, and the steam home page doesn't load. Furthermore, I can't access the internet with any web browser.
A troubleshoot tells me that my winsock files are missing or corrupted, but it can't repair them, and when I reset these files use the CMD command 'netsh winsock reset' in an elevated command prompt, it tells me there are no issues, and the winsock registry entries are there (Though I don't know if they're damaged or not). I don't know for sure what the malware is but I think it said something about being a DNS hijacker? Could these strange internet problems be related to my DNS settings and not a winsock issue?
I am trying to remove two old Bluetooth devices in Windows 10 that keep showing up in Device Manager. I have tried to find them in Settings> Devices> Bluetooth and remove them but there isn't an option. When I uninstall them in Device Manager they keep coming back. How do I unpair and remove old Bluetooth Devices in Windows 10?
View 1 RepliesI'm not sure when it started, but all of a sudden I discovered that I did not have the ability to Drag and Drop a file from File Explorer's right pane to the left pane. I get the circle with line through it indicating that I can't do that. I can drag and drop a file within the right pane but not to the left pane. To move a file, I could only copy or cut and paste.
I wondered if some of the registry tweaks that I performed to clean up the Navigation Pane some days earlier might be causing the anomaly. I had followed Shawn's tutorials to remove Videos, Pictures and Music folders. I also removed HomeGroup and Quick Access. His instructions worked flawlessly.
To see if any of those tweaks was causing the DnD problem, I systematically reversed each one, one at a time. Here is my finding.
As soon as I restored Quick access my ability to Drag and Drop in File Explorer was restored! To verify my findings, I removed Quick access and lost my DnD again. Restored it a regained DnD again. I Hope this can be useful for those who are having the DnD problem.
A few days ago, after a poor string of decisions, I contracted the esurf.biz broswer hijacker virus, along with possible others. I then proceeded to start cleaning my computer, first with ESET NOD32, then AdwCleaner, then Junkware Removal Tool, then Malwarebytes, and finally HitmanPro, along with deleting the malicious browser shortcuts. This was all done according to the MalwareTips removal guide for this virus.
After completing this and restarting my computer, I discovered that my internet connection was not working. The network drivers and the network and sharing center both detect a connection, but no internet browsers nor any other programs that use internet are working. Although for some reason I am still getting steam popups about friends' game activity. At this point I have scanned the computer multiple times more with different softwares and nothing more has come up. Proxy servers are not enabled in any of the browsers, or in the LAN settings. I have also reset winsock. I have run several Farbar Service scans (most recent included below), but all that shows up is "other errors" for Yahoo.com. Previously, it turned up an error for windows update, but I resolved it

View 1 RepliesMy present Windows 7 computer has the C: Drive (OS) and two additional storage drives, D & E. When getting reading to do a clean install of Windows 10, is it necessary to electrically remove the storage drives in case of any conflicts, if any, during the installation of Windows 10 or can they remain intact during the clean installation of Windows 10?
View 8 RepliesI have two computers working on Windows 7 that are directly connected to each other via an Ethernet cable utilising Windows Sharing and all works fine.
However, I have two other computers on Windows 10 that are also directly connected to each other vian an Ethernet cable and I cannot get them to see each other.
All the settings are the same as the Windows 7 devices but there may be something different in Windows 10 that makes what was a very simple process now more difficult.
How to successfully get two windows 10 devices connected and found if there is some subtle setting that I am missing.

View 4 RepliesIf I boot normally, all three accounts, including the built-in Administrator account become Standard accounts, even though they were all setup as Administrator.
If I boot to Safe mode or Safe Mode with Networking then they all are Administrator accounts.
Right now I'm running Windows Repair All-In-One. Will see if that works.
This computer also boots to a black screen two out of three times (not always though, sometimes more, sometimes less.). If WRAIO doesn't do the job I'll tray a Refresh. If no joy there then I'll clean install. I have a good Macrium image backup so won't lose anything no matter what I do.
On Desktop computer have OODLES of storage and multi-media file but slow Wifi card.
Laptop (new) has mega fast Wifi - AC 5GHZ. Almost as fast as LAN.
Want to chromecast some movies to a TV in a friends house.
Can I direct Wire the laptop to the desktop so I can share the multimedia files and then use the laptops fast Wifi to beam it to the remote TV via chromecast.
I can't run Lan cables all over the place - but if a direct connection can allow me to use the WIFI adapter of the laptop then problem solved.
What sort of cable do I need -- I don't believe you can just stick a bit of Lan cable between the two computers (or can you).
Years ago there was a thing called LAPLINK -- relied on old serial COM ports --that would be too slow - and in any case no COM ports on these computers.
I don't care if it's "Heath Robinson" --it's not a permanent setup - but we want to watch a load of movies etc and his wifi isn't fast enough (the ISP internet service is superfine and his router is capable of high wifi speed), --We've been banished to his shed where the computer is - because the women want to do something else !!!!.
Note - normal sharing works but is a bit of an abysmal failure since I can only get about 500 Kbs -not Mbs !!!!!) from his wifi card on the desktop so normal sharing is TOO slow. The data won't get delivered to the laptops wifi fast enough to watch the movies without re-buffering every few secs - especially if it's 1080p with subtitles that usually need transcoding on the fly).
I want to transfer media files from my phone to my computer.?
View 4 RepliesI have been unable to do a direct cable connect. Settings are not available. In settings, to do a cable connect it asks for a name and ISP. There isn't any. I never had a problem doing this before and I can do it with my apple computer. It has now been 2 days trying to figure out how to do what should be the easiest connection. No problem with any wireless----not everyone has wireless! Your microsoft stores have a long way to go to match the apple stores. If you can't get a connection to the internet it is very difficult to communicate or download any patches.
View 6 RepliesI'm on a Windows 10 Pro PC accessing a linux server with samba etc installed and working well (visible via Homegroup to both Android and Windows 7 pro). From the Win 10 box, if I type the name of the server in Windows File Explorer, then the shares from the server show up without issue. However, if I go into the Network folder, it does not see the linux servers - even though they are correctly configured for the correct homegroup. My windows 7 machines can see the servers in "network" as can my android devices.
Here's a screenshot. Note, the red arrows show what displays in Network folder (red arrows). If I click on the Server Name (HunterNAS in this case), the server shares are displayed and it shows up in the Network folder (blue arrows). Even after making the successful connection, display of another file explorer window > Network folder displays no linux server shares...
