Accounts :: Upgrading To Pro But It Says Home On Install Wizard
Nov 5, 2015
Bought a W10 Pro licence yesterday to upgrade from W10 Home. Just running the install wizard and i'm getting:
"Ready to install. To recap you've chosen to install Windows 10 Home."
Just a text error do we think or something more sinister? I don't want to go through the whole process only to replace Home with Home!

I currently have Windows 7 on my pc, and I want to upgrade to windows 10 using the included free upgrade. I just wanted to know, since I have different local user accounts, if they will stay separate on windows 10, or are users set up in a different way on windows 10?

This hasn't been confirmed yet bet many people that had child accounts on their PC that upgraded to 10061 have gotten locked out of all modern apps including the start menu, windows update and settings.
So far a clean install or rollback seems to be the only fix.

I have Win 10 installed and activated on one computer - Asus z97 Deluxe/USB 3.1 mobo - but it ABSOLUTELY refuses to install on another computer - EVGA z97 Classified mobo. Regardless of the method - and I have tried all I know of - I ALWAYS get the same message: "Installation failed 0xC1900101 - 0x20017 The installation failed in the SAFE_OS phase with an error during Boot Operation".
All bootable win 10 USBs and DVDs refuse to boot. Out of desperation I even purchased Win 10 Home (which means I simply purchased a too expensive key. I was extremely disappointed that no different software came with with the purchase. Some of the solutions I have found are so difficult I might have been able to write a C++ program that would be much simpler.

I have BizSpark, and I'd like to upgrade my Windows 10 Home computer to the Pro version. I downloaded the "Multiple Versions" ISO from MSDN, but when I run it from within Windows, it only lets me re-install the Home edition. How do I upgrade without doing a clean install?

My PC has Windows 10 Pro installed on it but it's just a 1 month trial version. I ordered Windows 10 Home for it but I'm wondering if I will get to preserve all my personal files and settings when I install it. I'm going to back it up just in case either way, but it would be nice to know if everything is preserved or not.

I updated to windows 10 on my Sony Vaio fit 13a SVF13N25CG (running Windows 8.1 when bought) yesterday. And I updated by following the instructions from sony.
After updated, I wanted to clear all data on my notebook, so I executed windows 10 factory reset (didn't use the factory reset provided by Vaio). So all the pre-installed programs, including Vaio care, are lost. I just want to reset the notebook to the situation when I bought it. However, when I executed Vaio recovery solutions and try to "started recovery wizard" -> "skip rescue", a error 393 appeared (An error occurred while executing an application).
What can I do to solve this problem? I just want to reset my notebook to its factory setting (same as when I bought it).
I made a recovery usb using vaio care before I carried out factory reset. But it didn't work under the rescue mode of Vaio (same as the error 393 mentioned above, to "started recovery wizard" -> "skip rescue", a error 393 appeared).

I just build a new machine with a Gigabyte B85M-D3H mobo, Intel Pentium G3258 CPU, 4GB Corsair Value Select DDR3 1333 and 120GB Samsung EVO SSD. I now want to clean install Windows 10 Home (64-bit) from USB drive (created with media creation tool), but the machine is stuck in boot loop. The Windows logo appears for a few seconds and then the machine reboots, I don't have clue where in the boot process something goes wrong.
I already tried with a usb stick with Windows 8 installation files and this starts without issues. I made sure Fast boot en secure boot were disabled but without success. Also already reset the BIOS with optimized settings.
The stick boots till the first screen on different other machines.

When I try to install games with Installshield Wizard, it doesn't install. It acts like it does but doesn't. The progress bar doesn't move at all and it will be like that as long as you let it. No error code or message.

I have noticed since upgrading to Windows 10 I am unable to Log into my work network which uses Server 2008. It keeps giving me the following error. I have added it to the compatibility mode settings but still get the same error. This is the following error I am getting " The wizard cannot configure Remote Desktop Connection settings. Make sure that the client version of Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) 6.0 or later is installed on this computer"...
I have attatched a screen shot also.

I have a windows 7pro system that I have used for about 3 years. A fairly substantial mix of software installed over time has predictably slowed down performance enough that a clean OS install is in order. I also have a SSD I would like to install as the primary C drive as well as the update to windows 10.
There are two ways to go about this, and am not sure which is the most reliable or cleanest way.
a) I can install the SSD then reinstall win7, and 3 years worth of OS patches. Wait around until Microsoft notifies me of availability of windows 10, install windows 10 and then install all the application software.
b) I could upgrade to windows 10 get a license key(?). Then install the SSD, next reinstall windows 10 and finally all the application software.

I get to the advance boot menu of my windows 8 laptop, select boot from USB and go through putting in my product key and then I select UPGRADE not CUSTOM. it then proceeds to give me this message: "The computer started using the Windows installation media. Remove the installation media and restart your computer so that Windows starts normally. Then, insert the intallation media and restart the upgrade"
So following the instructions I remove the USB and click close in the bottom right of the window, and then another window flashes too fast for me to read and then takes me back to the original windows set up screen with the big install now button. I then exit out of this window and confirm I want to stop the installation. At this point the USB has been removed and the laptop restarts. Am I supposed to put the USB back in while it is restarting? When I land back on the home screen I repeat the process of holding shift and restarting and selecting the USB to boot from and the vicious cycle continues. I really don't want to have to do a fresh install of windows 10 as I don't want to lose all of the files. I can back everything up worst case scenario but I would like to just upgrade as I never received the upgrade sign in the bottom right months after windows 10 was released, so I took it upon myself to make an ISO.

I'll soon be upgrading my PC to Windows 10 pro and while doing so I also purchased a dedicated SSD for the OS as well as an SSD for games. I plan to back up the old info from my HDD to an external and just wipe the HDD to use as extra storage. Obviously this means that all the drivers I installed when I first build the machine will be gone and I'm a little intimidated by the process of searching out what drivers I'll need for this new install.
I can't be 100% sure that I'll locate my mobo's driver install disk, however I have located the mobo on the manufacturers website where I have access to it's Windows 10 dedicated drivers. Everything is a separate download there, however, compared to the disk install which was a simple click and go so I'm not sure exactly what I need, what Windows will install automatically, etc. Some of the drivers say they need to be installed via a usb boot drive which is find strange. A year ago I bought a Lenovo Yoga 2 that came with Windows 8.
Unfortunately, I upgraded to Windows 10 several months ago. It has been such a nightmare I want Windows 8 back.
Can I just buy a new copy of Windows 8.1 and clean install it on my laptop? Someone told me once its been upgraded to Windows 10 that I can't do that, but that just doesn't seem right.
I'm not very savvy when it comes to doing a reinstall. I'm not sure what to buy and I want to make sure trying this won't brick my computer. OEM, Full, etc seems like there is so many things to consider when trying to buy just a regular old version of Windows 8.1 ...

I have a few laptops, all of them are the same specs except for a few with a different GPU. All of them run the exact same software. I'm planning to upgrade them all manually to 10 first to register the machine, then create an image so in case a drive goes belly up, I'll just restore it from the image created instead of installing all the software one by one. I'm going to take one machine, sysprep it then keep a copy of that image for restoring on to the other machines. In this case would it just reactivate properly on the newly cloned machine?

I'm planning to upgrade my Win7 laptop to Win10 next week and I'd like to know if there is an option for clean install (Delete all files, fresh windows settings, old windows moved to "windows.old" folder) from Windows Update or do I have to download Windows 10 Media Creation tool?

If I decide to do a clean install of Windows 10, can I just disconnect my Data HDD from SATA/Power during the process? This would be really ideal since I only have docs/installers/music/videos/photos and could even backup my current steam library. I don't have an external drive to back up anything with, and I don't see why it'd be needed here.
I feel like the internal drive is acting similar to how an external drive acts anyway

Just a few final comments about the free upgrade.
1. Upgrading does not allow an installation with dual boot option.
2. Windows 7 is gone after one month. If you don't like it, too bad.
3. My "legacy" Dell colour laser printer will not function with Windows 10. It works flawlessly with Windows 7 and getting a new printer gets rid of the saving plus a lot more than the savings of a free W10. I will pass on the "free" upgrade.

I have a laptop and a desktop with a 120 gig ssd and a 64 gig SSD respectively. Both computers have conventional hard drives as drive D. I have two 250 gig SSD's on the way. What is the best strategy for moving to the new SSD's and preforming the clean install of Windows 10. The desktop is running Windows 10 insider preview 130 and the laptop is on Windows 8.1.

I have a laptop that came with Windows 8.1. The hard drive failed and has been replaced with a new hard drive. If I want to install Windows 10 on this laptop, do I first need to install Windows 8.1. and then perform the upgrade to Windows 10, or can I just install Windows 10? Will Windows 10 use the Windows 8.1 license key in the BIOS to activate? Or will this not work unless I first install Windows 8.1. and then upgrade to Windows 10?
This computer has never had Windows 10 on it.
The computer has a new unformatted hard disk that has never had Windows 8.1. installed.

I did an upgrade from W7 yesterday. Put the computer to sleep overnight. This morning it wants some password. What it wants as I did not explicitly set one. How do I get into the system? Do I have to reinstall W7 then do an upgrade again? I never set any passwords on W7 as all of my passwords are in Keepass.

My wife recently updated her SP3 to Windows 10 and, well, it's been an adventure.. Anyway, we both have a user account on the SP3 and she has Netflix installed and it runs fine on her account. I tried to install Netflix on my account and it appeared to install OK, but when I click on the tile, nothing happens. Also, when I right-click on the tile, I don't get the option to uninstall. Eventually I had to uninstall via the "apps & features" panel.
Tried multiple times to reinstall from the app store, but the same thing happens each time.

If I upgrade a Windows 7 Pro desktop to Windows 10 Pro, then I do not have any issues. However if I do a clean install of Windows 10 Pro, and create the password for the administrative account.
After getting it all setup, I add it to the domain on the network. I can log in with the login info from the Active Directory Server. Now the problem I run into, is say if I want to even change a file name, it asks for the Administrative username and password, at which point I have to enter ComputernameUser for the username then Password when the pop up happens.
Is there a way I can remove that? It doesn't seem to do that on any Windows 7 pro to Win 10 Pro upgrades though. And I have several more machines to do clean installs.
