Add Multiple Target Drives To File History
Mar 7, 2016
I'm using File History to backup my files to a external drive. This works fine. However, I would like to save a backup copy of my data on 2 different drives. I can't seem to be able to find a way to add more than 1 target backup drive in the settings. Is it at all possible to add multiple target drives to File History?

I am wondering what the best way is to install windows 10 on multiple harddrives, so that the OS is my SSD, the programs are on a HDD, and the user files are on another HDD. Any way to do this and it has worked successfully could you say that the windows 7 method works.

I have multiple hard drives on my machine with a power switch between the PSU and drive itself. None of these drives are boot drives except the drive that holds the OS. Yet, W10 will not see any of these drives just by turning on the power switch. I have to switch on the HDD, and then go through the whole startup process to get W10 to see it. External USB drives are seen straight away. I don't understand why this is as I can see no difference between this system, and switching on external eSATA drives on my old W7 machine which always worked OK ?

My Windows' acting up, tried every trick in the book to fix it and no dice, so I'm taking the easy yet bothersome route of reinstalling everything. Again.
But Windows 10 has a "Reset this PC" option under Settings > Update & Security > Recovery (screen cap for clarity) which in practical effects, it's what I need, but faster and less bothersome.
Problem is, I have more than one (physical) hard drive on my system, and I don't know if Windows will restrain itself to formatting the system drive or if it'll format all drives present.
And I'd rather ask a relatively dumb question than risk losing all my backed up data XP.

So this is pretty critical: I use Win8.1's built-in File History back up to my external drive and it works great. What I need to know is, when I upgrade to 10, will it be able to bring that back up into 10 even though it was done on 8.1? Otherwise I'd have to go do it all by file; having it do itself would be much preferred.

I am trying to backup my data (not a system image) to an external hard drive Although I have succeeded in backing files up the system does not work automatically (as it implies it will) and the only work around seems to be to select an alternative drive each time.
In addition if I use File History to attempt a backup the system appears to write to the external hard drive but nothing gets recorded. There is sufficient space for the data (12GB - hard drive total size 120GB) so I do not think it is lack of space.

I currently do File History with 1 external HDD as everyone else does. I have a spare external HDD that is just gathering dust. I wonder if I could do File History with 2 external HDDs? Will I run into trouble if I did?
The idea is that I could do File History with the 2 external HDDs on alternate days, so if the internal HDD and one external HDD happen to die on the same day (very, very unlikely, I know) I lose just one day of backup at the most.

Whenever I do the File History Backup; at completion it gives me the following message: "Backup encountered a problem while backing up file C:UsersAdminSkyDrivePictures. Error: (The system cannot find the path specified. (0x80070003))". I believe this occurred for the first time after I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10. I no longer have a SkyDrive folder it was replaced with a OneDrive folder. For some reason it is still looking for the SkyDrive folder. In the "Exclude from File History" screen I am unable to exclude the SkyDrive folder. I guess that doesn't surprise me because I no longer have SkyDrive folder. How then do I prevent this error occurring when doing a File History backup?

I currently encountering a problem restoring files from the shadow volume. I do not see any version history when I click the previous version history tab. Using a third party tool like shadowexplorer I am able to see the previous versions. Exporting the files out from the shadow volume also is incomplete with file errors. Any way for me to restore fully some files from the shadow copies ?

I've been using Backup & Restore on some Win 7 systems but now I have added a new Win 10 PC (from HP).
It's not entirely clear to me why I would use the Win 10 File History facility versus Win 7 Backup & Restore. File History looks like a partial backup. I'd prefer a full backup. Win 10 advertises creating a System Image but I don't consider that an alternative to a file backup with all the files (mine and the system's).

I'm having trouble setting the windows 10 file history drive. The drive I'm trying to use is Y: on disk 4 in the disk management image attached, which shares a 4TB hdd with another two partitions. It uses GPT and is a dynamic disk. All partitions are formatted as NTFS. When I go to file history and attempt to set the drive, only another partition on a different hdd is selectable which I would prefer to not use.
I was able to use this drive for file history up until I reinstalled windows 10 recently, where I formatted down to windows 7 from windows 10 tech preview, then upgraded to windows 10 to activate my old win 7 key. This was done after a recent major hardware upgrade (motherboard/cpu/ram). The 4TB hdd wouldn't have been touched by any of the windows installation procedures and I haven't set any page or hybernation files to it. The only difference is that it's plugged into a different motherboard. The old motherboard was a Gigabyte GA-980FXA UD5 (rev 2101) and the new one is a Gigabyte Z170X-Gaming GT G1 (rev 1).
I've had a look around on the web, and solutions have asked to remove any folders on the partition from libraries, which I have done as far as I can tell, with no success (there weren't any in the first place, but there were some on the other partitions which I've removed). Another solution was to share the partition with full read/write access to everybody. This did work, but it seems like terrible work around rather than a fix.
I'm guessing this might have something to do with the GBT/dynamic nature of the disk, but if that was the case then it shouldn't have worked before the reinstalls as it should still be the same.

I have been using file history on Windows 10. It is very unpredictable. File history is backing up to external drive, but it has coupled the entire "C" drive. In file explorer I have two "G" drives. I thought it only backup recent files not duplicate the drive.

I have custom libraries set up to back up my X:Pictures directory and it's been backing up just fine. I dumped a large amount of pictures to a sub folder and didn't get around to deleting the bad ones before file history threw them on my history drive. No big deal, I went through the files at their main location and deleted the bad ones and then simply deleted the entire sub folder from the file history drive and then forced file history to run.
It's no longer backing them up.
I changed my settings to back up every 10 minutes and keep forever and forced again.
There's about 800GB of free space left so that's not an issue. I tried a restart and I even tried to wait the 10 minutes. It's still not backing them up again.
If I delete a file inside that sub directory and leave it in the recycle bin and then go to previous versions for the sub folder, it shows previous versions. When I choose to restore from one, it tells me the file is no longer in the location. It seems there's an index somewhere that needs to be deleted that's telling file history that I have files backed up that I manually deleted. In relation to that, what's the best practice to remove backed up files that I wouldn't mind backing up again. The scenario I pointed out happens quite often actually. I take a thousand pictures and don't get to deleting the bad ones before file history backs them up.

I had File History turned on an old machine that I'd upgraded to Windows 10. The machine was working fine with File History backing up files to an external storage drive. The machine died recently (motherboard completely not working) and now I have a new machine with Windows 10.
However I want to restore my files from the File History backups I had for my old machine, but I can't figure out how to make it work. Whenever I try to use the same external location as my File History drive it just makes a new backup with a different folder for my new machine.
How is this supposed to work?

So I have file history on and working. If I enter file history options via Start menu/settings/update & security/backup/more options/ there is a list of folders under "back up these folders" all prefixed c:users"myname"
Above this is an "add a folder" option. When I click on this and choose a folder that isn't under the "users" folder I get an error saying "But that didn't work. To find out more, look up error code 0x80070032"
Now I've looked up this error code but nothing I've found relates to file history. I'm only trying to include a seperate folder on a local drive.
I've read file history will only backup folders in Libraries and documents so why is there an option to "add a folder"?
I've tried adding the particular folder to a library but when trying to add that library under the "add a folder" it says you are trying to add a library you need to add a folder?

When moving Library Files and certain Users files to D: storage drive, Can Documents, Library, Pictures, and Video Folders be moved and combined to 1 main folder, with same location path? Ever since downloading Windows 10, I have been unable to upload PDFs to a couple of different websites, namely dropbox and an online file converter (smallpdf.com). It either says there was an error or says its uploading but never does after a long time (hours). I have also been having similar issues uploading .PNG files to facebook messenger as well, I assume the issue is related to that of the PDFs. I've already tried resetting my web browser (Firefox), re-downloading the files, re-starting my computer and uploading files from different file locations. The issue persists when on different wifi networks.

I recently bought a PC from my uncle, who had an account. I've been using my own Microsoft account. However, I've ran into many permissions errors, and scattered files as shown below. URL...This is also another error I've encountered. When trying to reset my PC, this happens. URL...(the darker image is what happens. It disallows me to click anything, but I can still use keyboard functions). How can I clean up the files? I always get the "in use" error. I would like to fix this, along with permission errors, without resetting my PC.
