After Restore Getting 0x8024402F Error
Aug 26, 2015
I upgraded my system to Windows 10 back on Aug 6th and didn't have any problems until yesterday. I won't go into the details of that issue but it forced me to restore Windows 10 from an Acronis TrueImage backup I had taken on the 8/7. Although the restore went well and Windows 10 is back up and running, I am unable now to run Windows update as each time I do so it give me this 0x8024402F error that says that there was some problem installing updates.
Note that this is not an internet connection error as I can browse the internet and download updates to other apps. I have tried the Windows 10 Troubleshooter for Windows update as an Admin and it says it found a configuration problem and fixed it but I still get the error. I have run various system scans and a CHKDSK and they find nothing wrong. I have searched the internet high and low for a solution this problem but the only thing I find seems to be focused on fixes to Windows 7 and Windows 8.x, not Windows 10.

I upgraded to Windows 10 from Windows 7 back on 8/6 and when everything was looking good I backed up my HD with Acronis TrueImage 2015. Unfortunately, my wife was doing something on the PC that caused the machine to go into a booting loop and I was forced to restore the HD from my 8/7 backup. It appeared that the restore worked well until I tried to re-apply all of the patches and updates to Windows 10 and Office. Each time I have tried Windows Update it returns a 0x8024402f error that only says that something bad happened during the update.
I've run the Windows Update troubleshooter and it fixed Windows Update components, however this does not resolve the issue. I have also ran the internet connection troubleshooter and the network adapter troubleshooter and neither found an issue. I don't believe that this is an internet problem however as I can receive and send mail from Outlook 2010 and I can successfully upload and download files from cloud storage and other websites. I have scanned my system files using the SFC /SCANNOW command and it found nothing wrong.
I have also performed a DISM command and it didn't find anything either. I have also cleared the files from the SoftwareDistrubtion folder and I've re-registered a bunch of DLL's from a list I found but that hasn't resolved anything either. I have also downloaded and have run the Windows Repair tool from www.tweaking.com and it didn't fix the problem either. Part of the problem here is that this is Windows 10 and most of the past posts have been in regards to Windows 7 and Windows 8.x. My gut is telling me that this is some sort of permissions issue or some registry issue that's causing this issue to exists.

A couple of days ago I made a system image backup (there were no error messages that it was unsuccessful), now I need to restore it, I boot Windows 10 DVD, point to a network location and start the restore, but after an hour or so, at the end it errors with "0x80070057: Parameter is incorrect". After that Windows boots to diagnostic mode but fails to repair anything. Diskpart shows that the partition which used to be C is RAW, I also have an impression that the order of partitions is different (C was 3rd, after restore it seems to be 1st).
I checked and I'm able to mount VHDX with C partition and access all files, chkdsk doesn't find any errors on it.
It's a UEFI computer with GPT installation. Is there some way to restore it with some 3rd party tool, or manually? What can I do?
PS: there's a lot of clues on the internet about fixing similar problem when such error popups at the beginning of restore from a USB thumb drive. The solution is to unplug the thumb before starting so the restore doesn't get confused with the additional drive. It's not the case here, I'm not using USB thumb and I get the error at the end of restore.
Update: I managed to restore an older backup of Windows 8.1 from before upgrade to Windows 10. I used Windows 8.1 DVD for the restore.
The difference between an old image and the new one is that after upgrade to Windows 10 I removed an optical drive and replaced it with a SSD which I was using for page file and ReadyBoost. Also, Windows 8.1 had 3 partitions, while after upgrade to Windows 10 I noticed that there's some additional 4th partition (so there were 2 restore or EFI partitions, not sure which), but the backup image of Windows 10 still consists of 3 VHDX files. The image of Windows 10 isn't an image made from a scratch - when I was setting up the backup I simply pointed to the old 8.1 image and Windows 10 was making its images on top of the old one (I wanted it to backup the differences only, to avoid huge transfer of the whole drive).
Anyway, as I already stated I'm sure that VHDX of Windows 10 isn't corrupted. It's probably some problem with XML metadata so the restore procedure can't recreate proper partition layout corresponding with images, or something. A

When I manually try and make a restore point using the windows program it ends with a property page error.
It still does the restore point ok and seems to work all right if I need to use that point to restore.
No error notifications pop up using the System Restore Point shortcut tool or when system does a restore point when adding new programs or drivers.
So my best guess is the error is showing up because this page is open
Does it on two machines running Home 10586.14

I installed windows 10 technical preview yesterday . I found a problem with system restore. It goes through everything normally but after it reboots I get an error. In the details it says:
System restore failed to extract the original copy of the directory from the restore point.
Source: %ProgramFiles%WindowsApps
Destination: Appxstaging
An unspecified error occurred during system restore. (0x80070057)

Maybe I have a misunderstanding of how System Restore works. Yesterday I uninstalled a program that I'd like to now get back. The company that made the program no longer offers archive downloads for that program in particular. Today it occurred to me that I could do a System Restore to when the program was still on this laptop & all would be returned as it was.
The first 2 times I tried was a total fail for returning the program but when I went back to a week ago it was there. Something is missing & it errors asking for the old install software that doesn't exist anymore (the program was purchased it 2008).

I have recently had to re-install Windows 10 and had problems before so decided this time to do a clean install and then run the system image backup. This went well but when it came to the testing of the restore a problem arose. I was using the Repair Disc created after the system image backup completed and could not understand the source file indicated was not where I had put the backup.
The restore said the file was on the C: drive which was what I was trying to restore to.

With Adobe Reader DC, the folks at Adobe made every thumbnail a plain pdf icon. They removed the preview where the pdf icon is replaced by the first page of the pdf file. Seeing the pdf content is much more useful than just looking at the same icon for every file.
The links work, the instructions work.
Having thumbnail previews restored is wonderful.

After trying to get too Familiar with Win10 and my new HP Pavilion Laptop (2wks ago), I now find I've lost my Desktop look and settings.
This has happened about 5hrs ago, initially I did not require a password at Start-up then after a little familiarizing ''finger poking'' I discovered that I then had to use one, my Microsoft Account.. outlook.com.. password !?

I did two upgrades - one 10 home x86 and the other 10 home x64 - and they completed without error. The only issue I'm seeing on both of them is I can't re-enable a number of auto-starting items that I disabled before running the upgrade. I used the Ccleaner startup manager to turn them off; now when I run Ccleaner the disabled items show however when I enable them they don't stay enabled. I ran System Configuration (aka Msconfig) and it is showing "selective startup", however changing to "Normal startup" also doesn't stick. I've been able get a few of the apps to auto-start again by toggling their "start with windows" option, but the other apps don't have that setting. Uninstall/reinstall would probably fix them, but I was hoping for a simpler way.

Just bought a new Windows 10, Office 2016, Ultra HD Lenovo computer. Already having issues, surprise surprise! Not only are there scaling/blurry issues with some apps, but Windows Backup and Restore is displaying the following error:
The semaphore timeout period has expired.
I'm trying to backup to an external Seagate drive.
I've tried several fixes as I was previously having this issue too ([URL]), but nothing has worked.

Another problem I'm finding with 10 is as follows. With 7 it was easy to minimize an open program. It disappeared to Explorer and could be clicked on and restored. Under 10 you can minimize, but only the first one is recognized. If you minimized a second program it supplants the first, the first disappears they don't stack up, the first is lost. Is there a way to stack up the minimized programs so they aren't lost. It takes time to have to go and retrieve the program from Google.

I have 2 Alienware M18X laptops. Both have been reset to factory settings and windows 10 installed via a usb. They are exactly the same computers. One works perfectly but the other freezes or black screens not long after the desktop appears. My question is can i back-up the one that is working and restore it on the 2nd one? Hardware is both the same and diagnostics show there is no fault.

So, Win 10 has just completed a routine update, (that is Windows 10 updating itself through win updater - not updating to Windows 10 from an earlier version) and now the classic desktop has gone, and has been replaced by the Windows 8 style (the one with live tiles and so on).
How to change this back - before windows 10 updated itself my desktop was fine - I just want the classic style back with normal icons and so on (if that makes sense!). I can't see any options for it.
Typical, as soon as I post this I manage to get it working again!! Windows had switched itself to tablet mode somehow (why it did that on a laptop.....!). So switching that off in settings returns everything to normal.
