View 4 RepliesI can set an alias in the hosts file on a win7 machine and access it just fine but doing the same in Win10 prompts for creds that never work even when entered correctly. What did win10 change?
hosts file entry:
127.0.0.1 hostname alias
ip - works fine
hostname -works fine
alias - Prompts for creds and creds don't work
I have gone to the extent of fully disabling UAC from reg, same outcome. Network and file sharing is set to password access and not homegroup. Simple file sharing is off.
Something to note. I always disable ipv6 form the adapter but when I ping my hostname it shows the ipv6 loopback. Why is that? When I ping the alias it returns 127.0.0.1 ipv4 loopback that was entered in the hostname.
I have a custom hosts file which has a lot of entries redirecting back to 127.0.0.1 (this is normal). One of my DNS servers is being updated, so I added a new entry to the hosts so I could get to my sites. This worked fine.
After about 30 minutes I noticed I'd lost access to my site and when I checked my hosts file it's reverted back to how it was first thing this morning. All of my custom entries are there apart from the one for my server.
So something is monitoring and resetting it.. I've ZoneAlarm firewall and anti virus, avast anti virus and super anti spyware installed. I'm assuming it's one of them, but I'd like to be sure.
Is there any way to monitor the hosts file and see who/what is changing it ?
I have changed from W7 to W10 but find that although I am logged in as the administrator, I am unable to save any changes to my hosts file and get the message that I don't have accees/permission and should contact the administrator.

View 1 RepliesMy hosts file grew to 900mb because of a n00b programming mistake. This caused the internet to be unusable. When I try to edit/delete it, it says Cryptographic Services is using it.

View 8 RepliesI am trying to block all porn sites on the laptop that I let kids play on. I tried using the hosts file to block them, I found a huge list of porn sites to block. But when I tried to load other sites like Facebook, YouTube, etc. It will take forever to load as I believe it is checking the whole list of sites.
Now what am wondering is there anyway of doing it and not have any difference with the speed of any other website? Because youtube should just come up with no issues. But with all those sites in the host file it takes forever.
Windows 10 (by the way)
How can I reset the Hosts file back to the default?
View 3 RepliesWindows 10 created a new crashdump file called ShellExperienceHost.exe.3708 in my AppData/local/Crashdumps folder, how to read one of these dump files or what this one means to me?
View 9 RepliesI built a pc last week and I get the BSOD after a few minutes of playing any game I try. I only have the last dump file I got because the BSOD before the last wouldn't let me start my pc in safe mode or restore to a previous date so I had to reinstall windows 10. Here is my dump file, I know how to open it but I don't know how to analyze it and figure out what is causing the BSOD here is my build shadybk - Saved Part Lists - PCPartPicker
View 9 RepliesI have several, rather large, Excel files. When I open one I get a window that says ..."Security Alert - Office File Validation"... .
I did a Google search on it and get a lot of TechNo Babble that I don't understand.
How can I get rid of this pop up without major surgery ? It has only been appearing since I upgraded to Windows 10.
I was performing a File Cleanup operation and it included something call Windows Defender. I always click to delete everything it displays. So I did and it deleted Windows Defender. I have since learned what it is and want to reinstall. I do not understand why Microsoft would allow you to delete a part of the system from the file cleanup screen? But it did. How can I reinstall?
View 2 RepliesI have selected certain file types / folders and locations in Windows Defender on Windows 10 that were added to the exclusions lists...
Previously I could go to Windows Defender and see what files, folders or extensions I had excluded but now they have disappeared....
All I see is the add buttons which work as intended when I want to add a folder etc etc.... But then they are not listed anywhere so that I can remember what I have excluded or not....
How to get that visible again, is there a setting in the registry that needs to be fixed?
This is what I should see where, below the red arrows I should see the excluded files/folders including their path etc etc [see image below]
but I see nothing..
Yet if i go to the registry as indicated below...
File and file location exclusions are stored in the registry key below.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows DefenderExclusionsPaths
File type exclusions are stored in the registry key below.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows DefenderExclusionsExtensions
Processes exclusions are stored in the registry key below.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows DefenderExclusionsProcesses
they are all listed there....?
I have to say that windows defender is excluding folders/files and etc etc, that I have selected during its scans, but I cant see the excluded items in the Windows Defender as per image of my Exclusions section below...
With Windows 7 my security scan took less than an hour. With Windows 10 it takes 3 hours. What's the deal?

View 9 RepliesAfter updating to Windows 10 I created a homegroup and now everything in documents is stuck in read only. It's the filled in box not the checked box. I manually uncheck the read only and it goes right back to read only. I left home group and tried unsharing folders but no luck. I'm at a loss in what else to try. Also tried rollback and it fails. Tried reset and it fails. Tried image rollback and fails.
View 3 Replies Since I have upgraded to Windows 10 Pro, I noticed that all my folders' attributes are read only . Even if I create new folders, they are read only on creation. When I try to remove the read only attribute in the folder properties, it looks like it's removed, but when I check it again, it shows that it's read only. I tried other methods, like diskpart, and tried to take ownership of the folders
Is there any way to fix this problem? I can create new files and modify existing files in the folders without any problem, but it's really annoying, for example Steam says it can't install games and updates, because the folder what I choose to install games is in read only mode, the only solution is to run it as an administrator. I need to run almost every program as an admin, to make them usable, or they report problems with read only folders. The OS itself is up to date.
I have recently installed Windows 10 on my desktop. I now find that most of my files are "read only" I have tried to deactivate this in properties for the various folders but it does not work. Other than trying to copy every file that is currently in use?

View 4 RepliesJust upgrading to Win 10 and noticed this morning that I am unable to change the settings from Read Only to allow all saved work. I have tried changing the Preferences, but as soon as I do, Apply, Ok and the settings refer back to Read Only. I haven't noticed this on any documents, only on Pictures. I have tried changing the directory and Pictures, but no luck.
View 5 RepliesI cant make a folder to full access. It remains as READ only always, when I try to unmark the square mark. Its like there in all of my files and folders. Do anything special to do to make them full access other than unmarking read only ?
