I've tried basically every powershell command I could find with no success.
I can't do an in-place upgrade (keeping files option is greyed out) and I'd rather not create a new user account.
8 hours ago my computer was connected via Ethernet and functioning fine during online gaming.
This morning approx. 4 hours ago I awoke to notice the computer updated and restarted during my sleep. Now the network icon has an exclamation mark and displays "Ethernet doesn't have a valid IP configuration."
WiFi functions fine. Other devices connect to WiFi fine. PS3 is wired to a different port on the router and functions fine, so attempted to change ports the laptop connects to, with no success. Bypassed the router completely and went just Ethernet straight, still will not connect via wired connection.
I have powered off the laptop, router/modem with no success in rectifying the issue.

I have checked network adapters and ensured drivers are up to date. Which they are.
Is there a way to mark them start menu items as used? I'm just a bit peeved at seeing "New!" tags on all of my apps after doing a system reset...
View 1 RepliesSo I upgraded to Windows 10 and so far everything seems to be working fine however the one problem I've had is a problem with the icons for Google Chrome and Origin on the start menu. The Chrome icon is really over sized compared to what it should be and is on a black background and the Origin icon has a black background. I've looked everywhere online and can't find a solution, I don't really want to reinstall Google Chrome, I reinstalled origin and it didn't fix it.

I wonder if there is a way (through editing system files or registry) to change Windows 10 Start Menu "All apps" to something else like "My Programs". Also where is the icon file located in the system and how to change the default icon.
View 2 RepliesThe left-click on my Start icon has stopped working and several reboots have not resolved the situation. My Windows key doesn't work either. I cannot launch Edge either. I'm running Windows 10 Home on a new Dell laptop.
What the heck is going on and how do I fix it? I've got apps that don't appear on my desktop which I am completely unable to use now.
For what it's worth, I can right-click the Start button since my latest reboot but I can't left-click it. (On the previous reboot, I couldn't right- or left-click it.)
I need this machine working ASAP because I use it for my job and my shift just started!
Is there anything I can do to make it install properly?
View 5 RepliesI removed the Windows Apps (3D Builder, Groovy etc.) using PowerShell and Remove-AppxPackage / Remove-AppxProvisionedPackage on our Windows 10 machines (64bit, some Home, some Pro) at home.
This worked satisfying enough, but for some (very few) local users the start menu entries for those apps are not removed. I refer to "All Apps" (the A-Z list of all apps).
Situation is like this: application is removed (checked with Get-Appxpackage in Powershell)start menu still refers to the Windows Apps with the text entry; it does not show the icon, but a coloured rectangle (sized like an icon)application cannot be started through this icon (as it is uninstalled)

I checked the usual places:

How to remove these orphan "icons" from the start menu (A-Z list)? What makes Windows show those entries in the start menu's A-Z list?
I originally wanted to completely disable the UAC as the admin permission messages that popped for almost any/everything i wanted to do were very annoying. I dont remember exactly what i did, but it was something in gpedit or something similar to it. After i did that my windows store app stopped working, and appeared as a blank space in my task bar as it was still pinned there. As the store wasnt working, apps related to it like the calculator disappeared from my pc. They dont appear when i search for them, and links to DL ones from the store dont work either.
I tried the guide here Apps - Reinstall and Re-register in Windows 8 and 10 - Windows 10 Forums and did step 2, but that managed to break powershell and make it disappear as well as disabling my task bar and start menu. I cant right click anything in my task bar, and can only use the start menu's right click menu.
Some desktop apps are missing from the "All apps" section of the Start menu. Most programs are there, but I'd say 10-15% are missing. Apps that are missing also do not show up when searching the Start menu, and they cannot be pinned to the Start screen as tiles from File Explorer. (The option to "Pin to Start" is there, but selecting it doesn't do anything.)
I have a screenshot here of Outlook 2013 missing from the Start menu even though it is present in the "Start Menu" programs shortcut folder. This is one of many examples.
I've tried resetting the Windows Search index a few times and that hasn't done any good.
Additionally, I've tried adding my own shortcuts and folders to the "Start Menu" programs folder and the changes do not reflect on the Start menu "All apps" section. It's as if it has cached the structure somewhere and it is not updating for changes (or it is ignoring some changes). I tried to figure out some way to kick it into resetting but I have not been successful.
I recently upgraded from Windows 7 to 10. My upgrade has been fairly buggy, but I am slowly working things out. One thing I can't seem to solve is my office apps are not showing up in the start menu folder. I had office 2010 before the upgrade, and that is when I first had the problem. I then uninstalled 2010 and upgraded to office 2013, and the problem persists.
After a few restarts and such I noticed the folder for office 2013 did show up in the start menu, but the only thing inside that folder is infopath. You can see what I mean in the attached screen shot. Also you will notice another folder beneath the first title Microsoft Office 2013. That folder was pinned to the start menu so that I could still access my office apps. I just did that as a quick fix. But not when I right click on that folder there is no option to unpin from the start menu. It only says pin to start menu.
Is anyway to edit "all Apps", especially to remove some icons from? I have uninstalled Edge, but the icon is still in Start menu of "all apps".
View 5 RepliesI have 2 accounts on my machine. On my primary account, the Xbox app would not launch - no error given, just click and nothing happens. So I logged into Windows with my second account and the Xbox app launches with no problem. However, the Groove app won't launch under the second account, whereas it will under my primary account. I have tried the Powershell command to remove and reinstall the app and that has been 100% unsuccessful.
It appears to do nothing more than remove it from the start menu as it still says "installed" if I search for it in the Store. If I reboot, then the Store will allow me to reinstall. The same issue persists in not launching and providing no errors.
I am completely baffled as to why some apps work under one account and not the other - both accounts are admins. Is there something else I can do? I had originally upgraded from Windows 7, but after getting all kinds of BSOD errors, I did a complete wipe and fresh install. I've had these default app not launching errors - or lack of errors as none are shown - since then.
I have seen lots of people saying their Store won't launch or the Start menu doesn't work, but I have had no issues with that...
Store (windows app store) and various apps do not open from the start menu. Store will also not open from search box. It just flashes on the screen, but does not open. Apps- such as 3D builder, Alarms and Clocks, One Note, Sports just indicate this app cannot be opened and go to store. All remedies to fix store listed in forums for windows 8 and such have been tried but have no effect. App trouble shooter for windows 10 is unavailable, but did run it and it just gave message that it is not applicable to this issue. That is reset, get apps, restore, and such. Seems all that is left is to reset computer?
View 7 RepliesI have apps installed from the Microsoft store on my laptop but they don't show up on the start menu to be able to pin to the start menu. They also don't show up under the "All Apps" area. Is there a way to force apps to show up so that I can pin them to the start menu?
Twice now I've had pinned apps disappear from my start menu - for example, I pinned a game & the notepad to the start menu. Then when going back to the start menu later, they're gone. I have repinned them in a different spot on the start menu & they seem to be staying now - is this normal?
The first thing i did after installing Win10 was setting my updates to notify for downloads and installation so that I could decide whether to download updates or not. However I noticed that new apps like People, Phone Companion, Calculator appeared on the start menu after sometime. These apps were not there when i first installed Windows 10. Also after I first used my HP printer, The HP remote control app installed itself and was visible on the start screen.
View 3 RepliesI recently installed Windows 10 Home using the iso. It was fine but after sometime, the start and metro apps had stopped working. I thought that re-install would do the trick. So I reformatted C: and installed Windows 10 again hoping it wouldn't come again. But now after two weeks... the exact same thing happened. Start, Action Center, Settings, Search... not working. Tried the powershell command, didn't work. Also I cannot create a new user because the settings app crashes... Start wouldn't come up at all. Metro Apps like Calculator, Store and all, they just simply crash after showing the splash screen for a second. I can't do another reformat...

I followed a tutorial on how to remove the 'app tiles from the start menu.....(right click -> unpin) but the apps don't remove. I have tried restarting the laptop and then the apps were removed but other apps have appeared.

1. media files(mp3,mp4,mov,avi,etc) that are linked to MPC-x64, but when I set MPC-x86 as default, it fixes the icon.
2. UltraISO files.
3. ZIP and RAR files.
System is Win10 x64 Enterprise, UEFI mode
it's quite annoying to see these icons and can't find the solution on google since I don't know how to address this abnormality.
Yesterday, I downloaded Windows Update MiniTool. It's a portable program where the 7Zip file contains a 32-bit EXE, a 64-bit EXE and an INI file which is apparently some sort of language file. About an hour after I unpacked it, the 64-bit EXE's icon disappeared. I deleted the folder and the shortcut I created, and when I unpacked it again, I left the 32-bit file alone. Eventually, I downloaded that batch file for rebuilding the icon cache, and I thought that that fixed it, but this morning, I discovered that the fix was only temporary. Apparently, there's some other issue causing the icon cache corruption.I also have IrfanView, which is portable, and I've downloaded several legacy games where I created EXE launchers with Bat To Exe Converter, including icons I made with Greenfish Icon Editor. I've never had any trouble with any of those icons. I extracted the 32-bit file, just to see what happens.

Is there a way to disable this icon in the registry? What is the guid?
I know how to unpin an app icon from the start screen, but how do you delete it from the menu list or your account?
View 3 RepliesI've got a clean install version of Windows 10 10240 on my machine. The store Icon recently changed from the all white minimal version to the one shown in the image attached. The background color changes with the theme. I've run the SFC /scannow command and found no errors. Additionally, I've cleared the Icon cache using the instructions at the link below.

I had an issue with Firefox where if I clicked the Taskbar icon, the program would not show on the desktop. HOWEVER, if you hover over the icon, it showed what it would look like if it were expanded. I restarted it in safe mode and got it to work again.
Just now WORD is doing the same thing. I had 3 WORD windows open and then they stopped showing at some point. However, they appear if I hover over the icon (set to "always combine, hide labels" in taskbar). I can see that they are in the same state that I left them, but they won't show on the desktop if I click them.
So right now, WORD won't open at all, even though the icon thinks it is open. This is really a problem since I need to finish some work with WORD ASAP.
