Feb 23, 2016I've got a Dell Vostro 3450. It has never worked really well, but the performance has been degrading recently.
I have recently updated to Windows 10, in order to see if it would solve the performance problems. But then I started to face others, so I went to the forums to try to cope with them.
One of these matters was the disk activity time spiking to 100% all the time. I've tried all the things I read, but none of them stopped it.
Then I figured it could be something with the HDD itself. So I downloaded HD Tune Pro Trial and the Health screen is the one that follows.
So I ask: Can the 100% come from the HDD bad health?
Browser/Email :: Mozilla 41.0.1 Running Slow - Lots Of Disk Activity
Oct 13, 2015After launching Mozilla hard disk activity seems to be permanently on, as if Mozilla where reindexing or something. It takes a long time (10-20 minutes) to stop and it makes browsing a very jerking experience. Of course I did a clean install to rule out some corrupted installation but no dice.
Launching Resource Monitor shows that all disk activity is being done by Mozilla FF and Windows Defender (Firefox being the first candidate).
Unusual App Update Activity - 40 Apps Were Queued Up
Oct 22, 2015A few weeks ago I set my app updates to manual. I missed the visibility when something is actually getting updated. Anyways, I manually check for updates 1-2 times a day and see 3-4 on average. This morning I checked and 40 apps were queued up. I am not and have never been on the Insider program on this machine.
I should have clarified: This is Win10 on a Surface 3.
Customization :: Changing Busy Indicator
Sep 5, 2015I don't like needless screen animation, so I find the Win10 "Busy" indication very irritating. Is there some way to replace it? On Win7 I've got the old hourglass, but I'd be willing to accept the not quite so old spinning colored circle if the hourglass is no longer available.

Oct 16, 2015I just bought this sound card and installed drivers for Windows 10. (and a crapton of bloatware with UI of Win XP media player...)
Everything works well except one thing: when I change the sound (or mute) I don't see Windows 10 volume bar. I mean these:
The sound itself changes, but there is no indicator. Is there a way to fix that?

Nov 21, 2015I finally had to set up a dual boot with Ubuntu so that I could browse the net in peace. The constant clicky-clack of my hard drive drove me nuts. Windows lately has not given it a rest. Ubuntu on the other hand hardly ever causes overuse of the hard drive. Windows needs to get a handle on this problem..

Sep 4, 2015I originally upgraded 7 to 10 and ran that for about 3 weeks, some odd issues came up and decided to wipe out everything and reinstall 10 from the ISO. Well off topic for this question the wipe drive option on installing 10 did not delete anything from my hard drive for some reason, unless windows 10 makes folders with dates back to 2011 on install which is when I first got this computer.
But to my actual question during both the time I spent just upgraded and now with the system with a fresh install I seem to be randomly getting a beep at various times that I can not even use process monitor to track down, it shows no sound activity for mp3 or wav when I get this chime/beep.
I have gone through all sound settings and its none of the ones used, I also have gone through the media folder and played each file there and none match this sound. IF this was the old dos days I would call this a system beep from the PC speaker but its playing though the speakers external to the computer itself.Google has turned up similar issues but none that match software that I run...in the time it took me to type the first part of this line it went off twice, no notifications appear in the action center to go with it.
Installation :: Machine In Sleep Mode But There Is Network Activity?
Nov 27, 2015I just upgraded from Win 7 to Win 10. The computer is connected to the home network via a gigabit switch. I notice that when the computer is in sleep mode ,there is still network activity but only the 10 mb/s connection LED is lit. When I had win7 OS and computer is in sleep mode , that same LED on the network switch would be off signifying no network activity at all .
Is this normal for Win 10 ?

Jan 16, 2016I never had this problem on Windows 7. But when I remote to a Win 10 PC, start a process, let's say copying files, when I close the connection (via the X at the top...NOT disconnect from start menu), it closes the copy process.
Are there some new settings or something that I need to change to correct this?
Laptop Boots Up To Black Screen With Cursor - Shows Signs Of Activity
Oct 8, 2015I am trying to figure out what is going on with my mom's laptop. Two days ago she told me she was using her laptop and everything was fine, but then she left to do some things in the kitchen and came back a bit later to the screen off. Upon waking it up by moving the mouse, all she got was a black screen with a white cursor. I have looked at it and upon manually restarting, it shows the Windows 10 logo, and then it goes to the black screen with the cursor. There is no login screen either but I do also hear the welcome music. One thing I noticed though is the cursor does have the blue loading circle next to it like it is actually still doing something, and it flashes and spins now and then, as well as the computer sounding like its working, but I have left this on for almost 40 minutes now and it is still just a black screen. It sometimes goes to the off screen and have to move the mouse to wake it up again. Some people online suggest task manager and opening up other windows but nothing works, I can just move a cursor.

Nov 15, 2015I have an SSD (This PC) for Windows, HDD (secondary disk) for files and whatnot. Running Windows 10 64-bit Home.
I saw that you could move apps to another disk through Apps & features in Settings, so I decided to try it out.
I moved an app to my secondary disk, and it cluttered up with like 3 folders (my personal folder, WindowsApps, wpsystem). Changed my mind on this, and moved the app back to my SSD.
I tried deleting the extra folders left over...only to find out that WindowsApps can't be deleted on my secondary disk.
So, basically:
WindowsApps is completely empty on my secondary disk. I tried taking ownership, tried Unlocker, tried the administrator account, tried changing security options. They were all denied access, what to do next.
Am I stuck with this empty WindowsApps folder on my secondary disk?

Apps :: Disk Drive Does Not Read DVDs Anymore?
Aug 17, 2015Since I upgraded to windows10 I am unable to watch movies from a DVD. I can read other kinds of disks just fine, just not movies. For instance, I wanted to watch the sixth Harry Potter movie. So I enter my DVD but my laptop just says there is no disk entered. I thought there was something wrong with my DVD at first. But it works fine in all other devices I have at home. So then I thought the problem must be my disk drive. But then I inserted the bonus DVD of the movie, and this one worked fine. WHAT? How is this even possible, both are DVD's, just the bonus disk doesn't have a movie on it. I tried this with all the harry potter movies we have at home and the same occurred each time, the movie DVD does not work but the bonus DVD (with behind the scenes and whatever) works fine. I have searched all over the internet and haven't found a solution. The only thing I find is people of which their Disk Drive isn't found anymore. But this is not my problem.
P.S.: It's a laptop, the details can be found on my profile I believe. And I wasn't really sure in which thread I should post this. As it isn't really a hardware problem, I don't think it's a driver problem (my pc says drivers are up to date) so I assumed it must be a software problem.
Remove All Volumes Of Dynamic Disk And Convert It Back To Basic Disk And Format
Nov 5, 2015I have a configuration where win 10 is installed on SSD but the Users folder is on a dynamic disk on HDD and the linking is made by a hard junction link from C: to D. I have removed paging on D as well as protection. Hence, I am able to remove all volumes of the dynamic disk and convert it back to a basic disk and format it.The problem is that I would like to keep all my installed programs (and settings, preferably). I have copied the Users directory to an external disk and copied them back to D after conversion. This seems to lead to a nonfunctional situation where I cannot even add a new user and most programs (even not all windows tools) do not work.What would be the best approach to avoid reinstalling the programs and to keep existing users?

Aug 25, 2015So, after about 2 weeks of experiencing Windows 10 I've decided to revert back to Windows 8.1, since I was more experienced at it. So I followed every step to downgrade the system, waited for about a few hours, then I noticed that when Windows restarted, it somehow went to an "automatic repair" loop. I've tried literally everything there was so I can get it running again, but nothing seems to work. But, there was only one option, in which I feel like an idiot to try out.
I went to Command Prompt and typed in diskpart.exe, then enter. I then typed in LIST DISK, then SELECT DISK SYSTEM, and finally CLEAN. Since I thought at the time that CLEAN works like resetting the PC, I rebooted it again, and I came to an error message saying: No boot disk has been detected or the disk has failed.Is, or will there be any other way to start my PC in a condition like this? If I'm missing any other details then feel free to ask.

Jan 29, 2016I have a folder structure (see below) that is created after upgrade from W7 to W10. In my previous question a day ago it was confirmed that it could be used for creating W10 installation media. So I don't want to repeat how it was created. It was created automatically and it is 3GB in size.
My question: I burned files and folders to DVD using native W10 burn files to disk method. The disk is not bootable. The structure on the root of the disk is exact as in Windows folder on the pic. Did I miss the option for making it bootable? Or it should be bootable just by burning the content to DVD?

What I intend to do tomorrow is to install from the OEM disk which I just purchased for $117.14 from A...... I may return the Windows 7 disc ($61) for refund if it is successful. If not the Windows 10 disc goes back for refund and I will keep Windows 7. Yes, they will issue full refund and free return shipping no questions asked. That is an additional $56.14 to acquire Windows 10 (including a disc) but worth it to me I'd cross my fingers but those from my planet only have one digit per limb.
