Apps :: How To RESET Microphone To Work With Cortana
Aug 10, 2015
When I turned on Cortana for the first time, I was prompted to read a certain sentence out loud in order for my microphone to be automatically set up and adapted to Cortana. Because I was a bit nervous using Win 10 for the first time, I said Hello Hello Hello in stead of the prescribed sentence. My microphone was set up on this clumsy basis. Now Cortana will only recognize the word Hello when I say it. How can I create another opportunity to adapt my microphone to Cortana by saying the prescribed sentence?
Had an Update around Midnight last night and this Morning, I found Cortana has disappeared together with my reminders and no Microphone Symbol showing.
I've upgraded 2 other computers (same vintage all HP) to Windows 10 and had no problem using the Cortana mic except this one. Is it because it's automatically using the webcam mic to allow me to do this on the other 2 I didn't have a problem with? I was thinking perhaps I can change my default mic to the webcam for this one. How can I do this? I couldn't find the webcam mic as an option in Device Mgr. I don't have a separate mic attached to any of my computers but Cortana mic works with one desktop and a laptop. This one I am having a problem with, is a desktop purchased at the same time.I can type into Cortana but not using the mic icon it has available.
A few days ago, I upgraded my Windows 7 laptop to Windows 10 and took Cortana for a bit of a test drive. It wasn't great but it might be useful on some occasions.
Today, I bought a brand new laptop which installed Windows 10 when I powered it on. After the installation, I was checking things out a bit and wanted to verify that Cortana was working on the new laptop. Cortana promptly told me it was not available in this region!
This makes no sense to me. I was in Southern Ontario, Canada, both times (although in different cities within the area). I can't believe that Cortana would work in London Ontario but NOT in Kitchener Ontario, which is only an hour east of London.
For some reason my microphone wont work. I recently upgraded my mobo and cpu and earlier this weekend it was working. I havent changed anything since then. The headphones still work and whenever i pug it into my I/O port it opens realtek control panel and it asks me if i plugged in the mic and i say yes or whatever. When I go into recording devices and put the volume and boost the gain it makes a buzzing but no sound. It is set to default device. I tried reinstalling the drivers but nothing.
I've been attempting to use applications like Teamspeak or Google Hangouts, but whenever I try to use the built-in microphone on my laptop, it doesn't work. It did work when I was using Windows 8.1. The "update driver" button only says that it's up to date.
EDIT: I have also found that the microphone appears to be turning on and off, stopping any audio when it's on.
I am in the UK. I have changed the region, language, keyboard and system locale all to US English and it still flippin doesn't work. Says Cortana is not available for your market. What am I doing wrong? Am on latest build on Dell Venue 8 Pro tablet.
esterday I had my Tablet PC (Windows 8.1) returned after the upgrade by a technician. I have encountered some issues, some fairly minor, others more significant ---- especially Cortana and Search not working:
1. Cortana does not work. She is said to be unavailable because of the language and region that has been selected. The language is English USA (needed for the keyboard) and the region is UK / GB, surely neither of which should be causing any problems?
2. Search does not work. It generates the error 'class not registered'. I have encountered this error before, so from searching in the past I have seen that this can be caused by a number of different factors, hence it is hard to identify what to do.
I will work on the other issues after these two have been resolved.
I have visited the How To site and found that my situation is commonplace, complicated and worldwide. There are many in a similar situation in the UK. On the one hand it is comforting to know that I am not alone and others have resolved the problems --- eventually. However, on the other hand I note that many of the postings date from July, and feel it should not still be continuing to happen now.
If I have understood it, the problems revolve around getting the settings for region / display language / speech language configured in a mutually compatible way.
Trying to do a PC Reset via the settings to wipe clean to sell it. When I click Reset in the Recovery menu of the Settings, I get a scrolling wheel for a second or so, and then nothing. It's as if something on the computer is blocking the computer from being reset.
When I try from the Advanced startup, it goes through a normal restart but doesn't do anything else.
I know that in the week that my mother had this computer, she managed to get a couple viruses from 3rd party search bars that she was prompted to download which were causing issues. I wonder if I didn't get it all cleaned off and there is something that won't let the computer reset?
I've recently upgraded to Windows 10 Pro from Windows 7 Professional. Since doing so I've had some annoying internet connectivity issues (Windows Sockets entries missing) among other things. So I decided I'd try the recovered features. None of them work for me. I click on them and my mouse icon does the load symbol then nothing happens. Even if I shift click Restart on and try to initiate reset from there nothing happens.
I want to factory reset my Asus UX301LA laptop running Windows 10 (came with 8.1), but Windows demands recovery media. The install disk wasn't included when I bought the laptop. I tried creating recovery media using the build-in program, but it says that some needed files are missing and that I should use the install disk. Is there any other way I can factory reset.
My windows 10 button, cortana, and google chrome won't work. The image for Microsoft edge and the windows store on the taskbar are black now and also won't open. I tried using the scan in powershell and it said that it couldn't find any problems. Also I believe my Nvidia drivers need updates but they also won't open it says it had to close. I already used malwarebytes to check for malware. I'm not sure what to do its been working for the whole time I have had windows ten which has been a decent amount of time but it just yesterday started this.
I installed (took 8 hours of updating 7 then installing 10) windows 10 and it worked for a few minutes but then I added some software.
Control panel won't work, settings wont work, I cannot uninstall software, I cannot get to reset, restore is turned off (I did not turn it off), safe mode will not work.
Sometimes it will boot sometimes not. No I cannot boot to safe mode when I get logged in, I set boot mode to safe but it did not work.
I want to tool back to 7 but I don't have a disc. If I am forced to stay with 10 how can I reset it? There is no disc.
My mouse and keyboard (both are USB) don't work, but they are lit up. I tried replugging them, but that doesn't work. I tried using F8, but that doesn't work. I also don't have a PS/2 port, as I am running BootCamp on a Mac. I even tried using the Apple Keyboard.
Before this problem, I had issues with BAD_POOL_HEADER (BSoD) on Windows 10 after updating drivers. Checking if I had any system restores, it didn't have any that I made before the update. So, I reset my computer, with all files intact. Then my problem arises; keyboard and mouse do not work, and I'm pretty much stuck on the login screen.
I just got this problem when i woke up this morning. The but is that Cortana, action center and most of the toolbar don't work. Ive tried to use the windows key but that did not work. Ive looked around and have tried a few ways to fix it but none have worked. I am worried if I will have to revert again. Last time I went back to windows 7 it crashed and I had no O.S and i had to go find the disk and had to reinstall.
I have had this issue for a while, any way to restore these. The Cortana Live Tile and Cortana entry in the All Apps section are both missing so I cannot re-add the Live Tile back.
I already have a Microsoft account that I've been using for some months with OneDrive. When I start Cortana it requires me to log into that account. I do so, but then it pops up a screen telling me to "Enter your old password one last time", and then "From here on out, you'll unlock this device using the password or PIN you just set up.
Before we can say goodbye to your local password, you need to provide it one last time." It then gives me another password box and says "(leave blank if none)".
But it won't let me leave it blank, and when I re-enter my Microsoft account password, it tells me its incorrect...even though it works fine with OneDrive. What PIN it refers to, nor what it is trying to accomplish...but it has stopped me trying out Cortana.
So I now have windows 10 and I'm so fed-up with it. It all started with RST driver thing not working. I downloaded the latest driver, installed it and windows would not boot. It would go to the trouble shooting screen and I tried everything, got frustrated and did the PC reset that does not delete your personal files. But it did just that! All the previous apps that I had, all the years of saving my favorite links in folders inside of firefox is all gone. All my adobe apps, security apps etc.... I have tried system restore (recovery) and even that was turned off. I tried to revert back to win 7 but the system restore in that was turned off as well and I don not understand how or why it was that way...
So, right after installing W10, I spent a bunch of time messing around with the new Start Menu. I wound up removing a bunch of items from my "Most Used Apps" list by right-clicking on them and selecting "Do not show in this list".
I've not got my Start Menu setup the way I'd like it, but those apps I removed from the "Most Used Apps" list, of course, aren't showing up.
I am having trouble with the modern apps and connectivity. It feels like half my computer will connect to the internet, and the other half won't. Desktop apps like Chrome, Steam, Outlook, iTunes etc. all connect to the internet fine, but any of the Windows apps like Xbox, Store and (most frustratingly) Settings will not connect.
In my network and sharing centre in the control panel it says 'You are not connected to any networks' - but in the system tray, and in the settings app it shows me as connected to my home wi-fi. I am on a desktop, and using a USB wireless adapter. I don't think the adapter is the problem as I have tried it on another desktop in our house on Windows 10 and it worked fine. Curiously also, when I click 'Adapter settings' in the control panel, it shows the wifi connection.
I've tried updating the drivers for the wireless adapter, both through the Windows update and adapter website but to no avail (and as I mentioned, it seems the adapter works fine elsewhere). I've updated manually to the latest Windows 10 Pro build, i've done a DNS flush, I've tried disabling firewalls and anti-virus, I've tried disabling startup apps, I've done a clean install of Windows 10 and still am unable to fix the issue.
So I thought I'd give Cortana a try since I can turn it off again if I don't want it, however I get to the point where it makes me login, I enter my email address and password and then it takes me to the next step where it tells me something like you need to enter your current password just one more time.
I enter the same password one last time and it tells me it's wrong.
I go through it all over again and reset my password and try again, go though the first login and get to the second stage where it asks me to enter my password one "last" time, and I do and it tells me it's wrong again.
Try a third time, this time leaving the password blank on the 2nd step and still fails.
Edit: I know the password is correct as I've used it to login to live this morning, so not sure why it's not accepting it in the 2nd stage of the Cortana setup.
In windows 10 it says I can chat with Cortana and ask it questions and get a personalized response, but this isn't the case for me. It says I can speak aloud or type, but since I've no mic, I choose to type.
When I ask it something like "How's the weather" or "How tall is Jeff Goldblum?" I get a bing search page that pops up instead of a Cortana response. All of the interests are enabled and such and I've filled out the about me with my name.
As soon as I start typing ANYTHING, it shows results for "The Web" and "My Stuff" but doesn't even try to ask Cortana the question.
