How To Remove Default Apps By File Type
Nov 28, 2015I accidentally set the .html file type association to be Microsoft Edge, instead I wanted to set it to a text editor. I am at the system settings, choose default apps by file type and I only have four options, three browsers and "choose from the windows store". Is there another way to unset this?
I tried to override this by providing file type association settings to filezilla to read .html by the text editor, but when I try to edit files, nothing happens. I'm not sure why.
Selecting A File By Starting To Type Its Name?
Oct 30, 2015In Windows 7, and before, in Explorer, I could start to type a name of a file that I wanted and Explorer would jump down to that file, but under Windows 10, it automatically starts doing a search of the folder. As such, I am forced to scroll down and find the file manually. There has to be a way to disable the automatic search feature and let it run like before.

Nov 24, 2015I was looking through a file within the file called" Windows8 OS".
The file was called "Microsoft.SqlServer.Compact.400.32" and it was a "LFL" file type. In trying to open it I inadvertently changed it to a "BC" file type.
Question, how do I change it back to it's original file type?
Second question, since it was in a windows 8 OS file does it matter or is it still relevant in my Windows 10 OS ?
How To Change File Type Description Of Files
Dec 1, 2015I would like to edit the file type descriptions of a number of file types on my computer. I mean the text that is written in the "File Type" column. For example, after installing Opera browser, all HTML and HTM files have the "File Type" of "Opera Web Document", but I would like to change the File Type for HTML files to "HTML file" and for HTM files to "HTM file".
In Windows 7 I used a utility called Default Programs Editor, but that utility doesn't quite work on Windows 10 anymore. I have some file types here that do not show up in the list of registered file types, which I want to change. For example, I have WSXZ files which are opened by a program called SDL, and the "File Type" according to Windows 10 is "SDL WSXZ Document", but I would like to change that to "WSXZ Forward Package File".
How can I do this? Is there an easy way to do it?
Some File Type Show Wrong Icon?
Oct 9, 2015i'm using windows 10 insider now in build 10547, recently some file with specified extension showing the wrong icon, all the wrong icon is same as in the screenshoot:
All error files have icon same like this picture, but all file is can opened with right program, the document is one of from some error file type, last time i have error with archive file and video (all extension eg: mkv, mp4, etc) but fixed when i'm install the media player, and archive file fixed when i'm reinstalling new theme in winrar application. This error can't fixed by change open with, example for my picture file, if i'm using windows photo viewer icon is error, showing icon like the above picture, then when i change open with using photos file icon is right showing the photos application like icon, if i change to windows photo viewer again then the icon wrong again. Rebuilding icon cache not fixing the problem, so what i can do? see icon like that even though the program is run correctly.
Is There A Way To Set Default Locations For Downloads Depending Upon The Type Of File
Mar 12, 2016I use Google Chrome quite a lot and need to download various types of files ie doc, jpeg etc. Is there a setting/extension where I can set a download location for each file type.
For example,
If I download a .doc file - it will save to My Documents/Another Folder
If I download a .jpeg/another picture file - It will save to My Pictures/Another Folder.
Cannot Select Default Browser - No Installed App For This Type Of File Or Protocol
Jan 4, 2016I realized recently that I don't have a default browser, so I went to Settings, then to Default Apps to select one. However, when I went to choose a default, I got a message saying that "There is no installed app for this type of file or protocol."
Where there should be a list of browsers for me to choose from, there was only a link to the app store which took me to a page entitled "Results for 'http'." What is going on? I have Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, and Internet Explorer installed on my computer, and they showed up on the list of apps under "Apps and Features."
I tried to choose an app by file type and by protocol, but got the same results. I also tried to set defaults by app, and upon selecting Google Chrome from the list, clicked "Set this program as default," but nothing changed. What should I do to fix this?
Can't Copy Or Open WAV File Type On SD Or CF External Card - Access Denied
Aug 9, 2015I have upgraded(?) from W8.1 to W10. I have a strange issue where I can't copy or open WAV file type files on SD or CF external cards. I have tried other file types and they open and copy ok. I am thinking this is something to do with windows file permissions but I am unsure where to find this to make the needed changes.
I get this message when I try:
"File Access Denied. You'll need to provide administrator permission to copy this file" ...
Apps :: Unable To Type In Search The Web And Windows Bar
Nov 25, 2015I've just upgraded my laptop to Win10 (did my desktop several months ago). The laptop is unable to take input to the Search the web and Windows task bar. I've searched the web, but all I've found was references to killing and restarting Search from the task manager, but there is no Search running. Also any time I try to start Cortana, I can see it start in Task Manager, but it then disappears. So the short of it is can't start Cortana and there is no Search running to restart. How do I get this feature to work?

Aug 14, 2015I upgraded my Lenovo U310 laptop from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 a week ago. Everything seems to have upgraded successfully. The only problem that I can find is that none of the video streaming from Windows 10 apps can be played. I get an error 'Unsupported video type or invalid file path' when I click on a video article in USA Today or when I try to stream video from any other apps, NBC News, MSN Money, etc... from Windows 10 store.
I have no issue streaming videos from any of the browser though. What could be missing that could cause video streaming to fail?
Apps :: File Associations Revert To Windows Default Apps On Every Boot?
Jan 10, 2016Every time I reboot, the file associations for images (jpg/png), media (mp3/wav/mp4/mkv) revert back to the default Microsoft apps. I prefer to use VLC for videos, Winamp for audio and Irfanview for images, and it's getting really annoying having to set all my file associations every time I boot up. This never happened on Win7 or 8.

Oct 9, 2015I have been facing the File System error (-2143326205) ever since I upgraded from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10.
Error description: All Windows Store Apps (Metro/modern/whatever they are called now) crash when I am not online. The Photos app is by far the only app that has given me an error dialog box. I can assume that all apps are crashing for the same reason because all of them start working again when I get back online.
I am not a great fan of these modern apps and the user interface clutter caused by them and hardly use them. But there are some games like Minesweeper that I want to play when I am on the go. I dunno why Microsoft even made calc a modern app (can't even multiply big numbers when not connected).
So far, I have not been able to find a proper solution to this problem. I guess it is a problem in Windows 10 itself and it will take a while for Microsoft to set it right. But I have an idea. Is there any software that creates a fake internet adapter that is always connected to the internet so that the apps think that I am online and don't crash? Is there an actual working solution?
Apps :: Portable Apps File Association / Open With
Dec 17, 2015Looks like another annoyance (don't get me wrong, i'm not a 10 hater ) : when i do "open with" and select a portable app, nothing happens :/ Also if in the portable app i tick options such as "show context menu", this won't take effect. All that worked fine on 7.
I dunno for 8.1 but i guess it's same as 10? Anyways, is there a workaround? Can't live without that! Another thing : the great"types.exe" app that we all use(d) on 7 doesn't work here, is there an alternative or not yet? Perhaps it's just not possible at all to have such....

Apps :: File Properties Not Working
Mar 5, 2016OK, so I open up "file properties" and I want to change the program that opens a particular file type when I double click it.
Windows 10 won't let me do this.
None of the buttons work - the "Change" or the "advanced". I can change tabs, but I cannot change the default program for a file type. I clicked it a bunch of times and I half expect in a few minutes I'll be deluged with dialog boxes all at once, but so far nothing.
Apps :: Able To Change File Open With?
Mar 5, 2016I have windows 10 and somehow mobi files are opening with notepad. Of course they do not read in there but I have a free ebook site in which I want to know if they too have to open with notepad. I managed to repair the extension but not the icon. Can that be done? Also it really annoys me that it appears on the default menu and matched up to notepad there and that also cannot be changed . Is there a registry tweak I can apply to get it back to the way it was?

Feb 10, 2016On every computer I've installed Windows 10 on (a dozen+) despite me setting all my default file types and applications, the first time a specific file type in opened, it still asks if I want to use this program. I've attached a picture of the first time I'm trying to open a MOV file.
Like I said, I've already specified that it should open with VLC, but it still asks anyways. I've tried this through Settings and Control Panel but it still doesn't work.
In the picture it does say iTunes is a new application, which I know would probably make this happen, but even without a new application being installed after setting my default file types, it still happens. Once I get through this screen it won't ever come up for MOV files again, but it will if I opened an MP4, and nearly any other file type on the computer. It doesn't usually happen with anything besides media files, but ANY picture; movie or audio file will do this (among several random others). This happens on EVERY Windows 10 I install, and I'm tired of having to keep two dozen dummy files and opening them all to disable this message on each computer. Is their a way I can prevent this message from coming up.
Apps :: OneDrive Disappeared From File Explorer
Aug 19, 2015Preface: I had Windows 8.1 and I never used SkyDrive or, later, OneDrive, but since it's so inbred with Windows 10, I wanted to at least check it out. Especially after all of Microsoft's hype and the $16 Billion they poured into cloud research. I also have a Windows Phone, so I was curious how well it would actually sync things.
So, I install Windows 10. I'm poking around. I see OneDrive listed as a program on the start menu, I click it and nothing happens. I open up file explorer. OneDrive is listed on the left navigation pane above "My PC." I click on it and it disappears. Poof! There are still OneDrive folders scattered throughout my C:Windows, so I know there are remnants of it hanging around somewhere. I surmised that the program on my start menu was the leftover OneDrive app from Windows 8.1. So, I uninstalled that. Of course, there's no reinstallation file for Windows 10, because, "it's just supposed to be there."

Jul 30, 2015Today I've just upgrade my PC to Windows 10, everything is alright except when I play media files(.mp3, mp4, wav,.....) by Windows Media Player, it starts to run slowly, and the sound is quite bad, I almost can't hear the sound, and the video is super lag, like watch video in low connection, I don't know why cause this.
If this cause by driver, can you give me a link to download it ?(I use driver provide by Microsoft and HP).I use win 8.1 driver for my Windows 10 PC because Hp still not public win 10 driver so far..My product is Hp ProBook 650 G1, i often download driver from this site: URL...
p/s : If I play media files by 3rd party software (like PowerDVD, Itunes,...) the sound and video is normal, it only happen when I play Windows Media Player, and also, watching video by Edge is super lag, super bad sound, but Firefox ad chrome is normal
Apps :: Doesn't Open Through A Batch File
Dec 8, 2015I have a desktop running with a few apps 24/7 feeding to a network, on the rare occasion it drops or restarts due to some update or power outage I thought I could write a simple batchfile just to restart everything automatically.
Problem is 1 app refuses to start, the app itself is in c:program files (x86) and that seems to be the issue. Error message I get is "cannot find c:program"
path for the app is...
C:Program Files (x86)COAAPlanePlotterPlanePlotter.exe
the other 2 apps open fine (but they are not pathed to (x86). am I going daft or missed something simple?

Aug 19, 2015I'm trying to create a batch file that should
- call another batch file
- start a program and then wait for the program to close
- call another batch file
My goal with this is to work around an issue in Windows 10 where the screensaver won't work when I have my game controllers connected. I already created two batch files where one of them enables my game controllers and the other one disables them. Both these batch files work just fine.
However I now want to create a third batch file that will do what listed above - first call the batch file that will enable my game controllers, then start my program which is an executable and then after I exited out of the program the batch file that will disable my game controllers should be called.
Here's what I've tried but this doesn't work, it will only run the first batch file enabling my game controllers.

2.Navigate to: Computer ConfigurationAdministrative TemplatesWindows ComponentsOneDrive
double click on: Prevent the usage of OneDrive for file storage.
3.Click on: Enable, Apply
Note - stop the one drive service if it appears in the system area (right hand end of taskbar or in the hidden area).
If after re-boot the one drive is still visible in File explorer - just click it and it will VANISH - GONE...
Apps :: Office 365 / Excel - Corrupt File
Aug 19, 2015Running W10 pro...with office 365 Outlook/Excel etc...
Opening an excel file within an email gives me 'corrupt' file. If I save the file I will be able to open it up *sometimes*. I have tricked the OS into opening the file by printing from the email attachment and then clicking 'save'. Sometimes that will actually open the excel file but not always.
I even installed excel previewer for mobile and confirmed that excel (desktop) was the app to open excel files but that did not work.
This is happening with Word as well.
Apps :: QIF File Association No Longer Works After Upgrade
Dec 1, 2015After the recent Windows 10 update my QIF file association launches the incorrect version of Microsoft Money.
Money is an old legacy programme that is still running JUST ...and I need to be able to customise the file association.
If I click on properties on the qif file I am given the INCORRECT option to use ....MoneyCoreFilesmnyimport.exe %1
What it SHOULD say is MoneyCoreFilesmsmoney.exe %1 ...... and no my default MSMONEY option doesn't work either. How/where do I make this change?
