Where Are The Default Windows Backgrounds Saved
Aug 16, 2015So I started changing my desktop backgrounds with my own images, but now, in "Settings", I no longer see the backgrounds that are included with Windows 10, like the blue Windows logo one. They don't show up in the 5 boxes.
This new "Settings" Personalisation page is terrible... Where are they saved?

Aug 12, 2015Second device just got win10 logo in taskbar yesterday, but now windows says my hdd has bad sectors and I cannot access it properly. I have a saved Macrium image I made several days ago. Can I put it onto a new SSD and will my existing valid keys still work so that I can get the upgrade?

Oct 24, 2015I'm trying to create some custom buttons for my PC using Rainmeter, and part of what I need is high resolution/quality icons from the programs I use. I notice that for quite a few programs, since I've set my icons to large, come up very nicely on my desktop, but I can't seem to find them of the same quality on the Internet. So, how can I take whatever file it is that creates this icon, and convert it into a high resolution jpeg or png file so I can edit it?

View 3 RepliesView Settings Not Saved For Special Folders (Desktop / Download)
Aug 24, 2015I've made the switch to Windows 10 for about a week or so now. So far almost everything is working just as I wanted, except some sorting annoyances with File Explorer.
For unknown reasons, file sort settings for special folders like Desktop, Documents, Download are not saved. I always sort my files/folders by date (Descending: New above, old below) so that I can access to files that I use the most or recent downloaded file. The sort setting seem to work with all folders except the mentioned above. Moreover, the sorting for these folders seem to be random (not 100% sure). For instance, my Desktop would sort files and folders by Name, while my Download folder sorts file by Date (but ascending!).
In all.. those special folders are a mess! I have to move forward and backward non-stop between them as I work but their settings just keep resetting!
I should probably move my working folders to some other location and forget about it. But doing that mean I have to make changes for all my PCs so I'd like to explore a fix before making those changes.
Updates :: Desktop Icon Setting Not Saved After Windows Update?
Sep 12, 2015Recently my PC just started to have some weird problem. Everytime after I restarted my PC or just restarted explorer.exe, my desktop icon reset from small size to medium and sorting order also reset. Besides I also noticed that in every folder view settings also reset.
The reason why I suspected it caused by one of the updates because I just formatted my PC. Everything was normal in the beginning but after I updated the windows. The exact problem came back.
Computer Starting With No Saved Files - Desktop Reset To Default Wallpaper
Dec 8, 2015So I just turned my computer on and noticed that my desktop had been reset to the default wallpaper and all of my folders had been deleted. I also realised that my documents and pictures had been deleted. I tried to run a game and my save files had been deleted.
I restarted my computer and everything was normal.
Is this an issue computer or just Windows 10 in general?
Apps :: Can't Choose Default Software / Choices Won't Get Saved
Mar 5, 2016I've had this problem a few days where I simply can't set a default browser (or any other default software from the settings) anymore. It let's me to go to the list and choose, say, Google Chrome, but then doesn't save my choice. I can revert to Microsoft's default settings in general, when the choice will stay as Edge. This bugs me the most when clicking on URL links in other software, they open up randomly in both Chrome (which I actively use) and Edge (which is the current default).
I have tried to set Chrome as the default browser from its own settings, too, but to no avail. Would also very much want to use VLC Player as the default for videos, but Win10 doesn't let me do it.
I'm sporting a Lenovo Y50-70 laptop with Intel Cote i7-4710HQ.
Customization :: Setting Desktop With One Image From Theme?
Jan 28, 2016With Windows 7 I had the ability to go into the Personalization settings and uncheck all of the images within a Microsoft Theme (such as "Waterfalls" or "Beaches") that I did not want to see. This gave me the ability to choose just one image from a theme to set as a permanent desktop background.
This menu was found by right-clicking on the particular theme I had chosen. In Windows 10 that menu is gone....
Therefore the themes just continue going from one image to the next and I have no control over which images I want, setting a timeframe for them to change (Used to have options such as 1 hour, 6 hours, 24 hours etc...), or the ability to customize the desktop background in the way I want.
Is this a Windows 10 design flaw or am I missing something? Why am I no longer able to customize a desktop background theme and choose 1 image anymore?

Dec 23, 2015I made a desktop background in 3ds max and its of a robot standing on the moon. The actual image I is about 10k by 6k so I converted it to 1080p because I was having the same problem with the larger image. When I set it as my desktop background it becomes blurry. The stars bleed out whiteness around into the black space. The textures and reflections just look like crap on the desktop image. But on the real image you can zoom in for miles and it is just fine. Why my desktop background looks worse quality than say an image viewer?

Nov 25, 2015I have a theme on my desktop PC which obtains its backgrounds from a folder in My Documents. There are about 300 in there. I have no issues with the theme using all the backgrounds available.
Until, that is, I switch on the sync theme option. Then the theme which magically appears on my laptop is the same, but only has about 10 backgrounds which the theme is accessing in a new folder called Desktopbackgrounds. In other words, they don't all sync across.
I go back to my desktop PC and it then has the same issue. Instead of using the folder in My Documents with all my backgrounds in, it is also only using the 10 or so stored in the roaming folder Desktopbackgrounds.
I'd like to sync my theme across my PC and laptop, but if it doesn't let more than 10 backgrounds sync, whats the point!
Customization :: Setting Different Backgrounds For Dual Monitors
May 26, 2015If you have a dual monitors and want to set a different background for each. You don't need third party program to set them. Here's an easy way:
Copy the background images to: C:WindowsWebWallpaperWindows
Use CTRL key for multiple selection to select both backgrounds.Right click on one background->Set as desktop background
You should have a separate background for each monitor.
The background images will be stored under:
%USERPROFILE%AppDataRoamingMicrosoftWindowsThemes
as:
Transcoded_000 and Transcoded_001 without extension
If you want to swap the images, just rename 0 to 1, 1 to 0. Sign out and sign back in or right click on desktop and select: Next desktop background

Apps :: Word Documents Saved As Wordpad Documents?
Dec 9, 2015I am using Word 2013 on my laptop. Windows 8 was operating system. Recently upgraded to Windows 10. When I save Word documents now, they are saved as Wordpad documents. (.xml files) Wordpad does not recommend some of the Word formatting and alters the documents.
How do I correct this? I want the save as Word documents, as I did in the past.

After deciding on one of them I deleted the others from my pictures folder but the deleted pictures are still showing in the personalisation window and can even still be set as background. Why that's happening or how to stop it?

Feb 23, 2016So, I have just bought a new laptop (Dell Inspiron 14) running Win10. After Win7 everything is a bit of a shock. The current problem I have encountered (there are many more) is that I don't seem to be able to force Win 10 to make Photoscape the default app for managing images. I can open individual photos with the program but only by using the 'open with' option.
Trying to use 'Settings', it tells me Photoscape is there, however, it is listed as 'unavailable'. Furthermore, when attempting to make the change Win 10 lists only its own photo app or 'Go to the store'.

Sep 26, 2015Been trying M. Reflect free edition on a Dell Studio XPS 8000. I did as usual and created a boot rescue CD with the PE file with no problem. Then I continued to make an image of my boot disk C and save it on my hard drive D.
Went to D and the image is there. Next I booted with the restore disk without problems, but after choosing restore, I can't find the image that was created on the D hard drive. I noticed that the naming of the drives also has changed and as such I looked everywhere but I can't find the image and as such I can't restore.
Apps :: HP G62-b32sa / Mail - The Linked Image Cannot Be Displayed
Jul 31, 2015I have recently upgraded my HP G62-b32sa laptop from Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit to Windows 10. I have set up two Outlook email accounts in the Windows 10 Mail app. In emails on both accounts, I receive the following error message in any area where an image should be:
"The linked image cannot be displayed. The file may have been moved, renamed, or deleted. Verify that the link points to the correct file and location."
This is accompanied with a small red cross in the upper left corner.
To rectify this I have reset Windows 10, but the problem still persists. I also notice online that this issue has been persistent with Office Outlook 2010, but trying solutions (such as deleting Temp folder) do not work in Windows 10 Mail.
EDIT: I created a new local user account, and set up my email in the Mail app. Surprisingly, the pictures work! So now the question is, why are the pictures not showing up in my user account?
Suddenly Cannot Restore Image By Running System Image

I created system image backup file at least once a week. I did one yesterday, and today I needed to run it to restore my system. To my horror, I cannot find way to run it. I ran system image backup restore multiple times. I know how to do it...... until today. Today, by the time I clicked Troubleshoot option, there is no Advanced Options to choose from. Instead it sent me to Startup Settings option where I could go to safe mode etc,
I ended up running a system restore. Good thing I do create restore point religiously. But, after system restore, I still have the same problem.......... cannot restore image by using system image backup.
adding............... I went to my other laptop running Win 10 Pro, I had no trouble running system image restore.
Networking :: Modern Apps Not Connecting To Internet - Desktop Apps Work Fine
Jan 6, 2016I am having trouble with the modern apps and connectivity. It feels like half my computer will connect to the internet, and the other half won't. Desktop apps like Chrome, Steam, Outlook, iTunes etc. all connect to the internet fine, but any of the Windows apps like Xbox, Store and (most frustratingly) Settings will not connect.
In my network and sharing centre in the control panel it says 'You are not connected to any networks' - but in the system tray, and in the settings app it shows me as connected to my home wi-fi. I am on a desktop, and using a USB wireless adapter. I don't think the adapter is the problem as I have tried it on another desktop in our house on Windows 10 and it worked fine. Curiously also, when I click 'Adapter settings' in the control panel, it shows the wifi connection.
I've tried updating the drivers for the wireless adapter, both through the Windows update and adapter website but to no avail (and as I mentioned, it seems the adapter works fine elsewhere). I've updated manually to the latest Windows 10 Pro build, i've done a DNS flush, I've tried disabling firewalls and anti-virus, I've tried disabling startup apps, I've done a clean install of Windows 10 and still am unable to fix the issue.
Desktop / Win32 Apps Missing From Start Menu (All Apps) And Search
Jul 23, 2015Some desktop apps are missing from the "All apps" section of the Start menu. Most programs are there, but I'd say 10-15% are missing. Apps that are missing also do not show up when searching the Start menu, and they cannot be pinned to the Start screen as tiles from File Explorer. (The option to "Pin to Start" is there, but selecting it doesn't do anything.)
I have a screenshot here of Outlook 2013 missing from the Start menu even though it is present in the "Start Menu" programs shortcut folder. This is one of many examples.
I've tried resetting the Windows Search index a few times and that hasn't done any good.
Additionally, I've tried adding my own shortcuts and folders to the "Start Menu" programs folder and the changes do not reflect on the Start menu "All apps" section. It's as if it has cached the structure somewhere and it is not updating for changes (or it is ignoring some changes). I tried to figure out some way to kick it into resetting but I have not been successful.
