Apps :: Shortcuts Of Installed Programs Goes To The Public Folder
Feb 2, 2016
When installing programs most place their shortscuts in the Public folder instead of placing them in the user folder. What am i doing wrong? I never had this problem with Windows 8.

My HP Desktop computer came with windows 8.1 and several additional programs.
I have installed windows 10 and the programs and apps were still there.
Since I have done a refresh I have lost the HP installed programs and the apps.
On the desk top the program and app icons are monochrome.

I have found a few threads on here and other sites to try and fix it, but no such luck. I am not hitting that old 512 app limit, as I only have 242 installed:
PS C:WINDOWSsystem32> Get-StartApps | measure
Count : 242
Average :
Sum :
Maximum :
Minimum :
Property :
I also have tried rebuilding index, and removed everything and set to default. This does still include my start menu icons, which have apps. Any time I search though, NO app is found.

Programs launched with keyboard shortcuts(either single key or ctrl alt) take for about 5-6 seconds to start. Even notepad....

Previously if I double clicked the shortcuts of Steam, Origin and Uplay while they were running instantly maximized their windows. Now if I double click them it takes a long time before they are maximized as if the computer is reloading them from scratch. I also have GOG Galaxy as a shortcut but it does not happen with that icon. What do you think changed?
The only thing that IO think might be related is that I disabled indexing of C drive but I later found that it was not a good idea and changed it back to indexing enabled.

I recently performed a clean upgrade from a clean 8.1 Install of Windows Pro. It's connected to a domain and uses Folder Redirection. The search function finds NO programs or start menu shortcuts, desktop etc. When I click the start and start typing, a few things are found, and at the top of the window it says "these results may be incomplete".
I have rebuilt the search, stopped the services, renamed the data folder, and tried a new user profile, and it does the same thing.

In add/remove programs I noticed 3 different times this happened, like 8 random programs install date will jump to the current date even though they had been installed for weeks already. It's not really causing any issues, just curious whats causing it to happen.
I tried checking event viewer to see if any errors where happening on the days this would happen, I noticed error id 1008
The Open Procedure for service "BITS" in DLL "C:WindowsSystem32bitsperf.dll" failed. Performance data for this service will not be available. The first four bytes (DWORD) of the Data section contains the error code.

Got a perfect upgrade from Win7 Pro to Win10 Pro for any programs that were on the boot disk. However any programs that were loaded on a second (non-bootable) disk were not recognized at all. Is there any way, other than reloading all those programs, to get Win10 Pro to know they are there? I thought this would be caught when the system upgraded but this did not happen. I was trying to keep my boot drive lean and mean.

Recently a change occured (after an update?). I have a folder containing only 6 shortcuts, linking to devices or to drives, connected to devices, in my home network. Opening this folder takes about 30 sec. It has to do with those shortcuts that link to drives, connected to devices, which are off.
Apparently, file explorer, when trying to present the shortcuts, also tries to get some info from those drives. After failing, file explorer nevertheless decides to present the shortcut after long waiting time. This effect has come recently in W10. In most cases, the effect is there, but in a few cases, the map is opening normally.

I'm trying to customize the "All apps" menu. In C:ProgramDataMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms I created a folder 'Utilities' and in it two folders (folderA and folderB with shortcuts in them. When I open Utilities in the "All Apps" menu I cannot see folderA or folderB and alll the shortcuts in those two folders are stacked together under the Utilities heading. What have I missed here? I'm trying to create a hierarchic menu structure and I read somewhere that this is the way to do it.

Folders in question
--C:ProgramDataMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms
--C:UsersRitaAppDataRoamingMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms
Right so, I have been trying to create application shortcuts in the "all apps" of the start menu. I've had success with some shortcuts. Here is a screenshot, with an example of what I am talking. The following shortcuts are behaving as I want them to,The following shortcut is not behaving as I want it to.. it keeps pinning to start despite all my attempts to unpin it and recopy to the folder, they are all shortcuts to executable files. Why is windows handling some of them differently?

I have had Windows 10 installed for about 4 months now and things have been going decent. A couple of days ago my system received a Windows 10 update that took about 2 hours and looked like it was installing Windows all over again (but it wasn't) and once this happened I couldn't find the Microsoft Edge application and the start button would not work at all. After doing a system restore to a date prior to the update things are back to "normal" except for this one problem.Currently my start menu does not show any Recently Used or Favorite Apps in it as shown below. If I select the All apps button it also shows nothing:
I made sure that all of the settings in order to see recently used apps and all my apps are correct as below are my settings:I have tried a couple of solutions that handled Cortana not searching for programs or "some" apps were missing from all apps but I have yet to find a solution to when absolutely no apps are showing in the start menu. I know the applications still exist on my machine as I use Firefox and Microsoft Word and Outlook plus many more apps but they aren't showing up at all. I am also under a local account instead of my Microsoft account and both have this problem.

I recently installed Windows 10, and everything was fine until I started installing my programs and wanted to pin the ones I use most to the taskbar.
Some of them can be pinned to the taskbar, but others can't for some reason. Even though they have the option "Pin to taskbar" when I right click, nothing happens after I click it, they don't get pinned. I have tried all methods described in this article.
This is a screenshot of my desktop with all icons that can be pinned to the taskbar in green, and the ones that can't be pinned in red (examples: Steam, AIMP, CCleaner, Word). Note that "metro" apps can be added without any problem. Also, I didn't have this issue in Windows 8/8.1.
And here examples of the methods I have tried.
(right click from desktop shortcut)
(right click from start menu)
(right click from taskbar after opening the program)

I was wondering if I could redirect my documents, music and movies folder to a hard drive due to low space on my SSD, But my concern is, will it effect my programs such as Adobe, AutoDesk and other programs currently storing files in this folder? Or will they automatically look point to the hard drive after i redirect the folders to a new location.

I can neither uninstall nor disable Cortana. If I end task in task manager it turns itself right back on.
It is not listed in the programs folder. I have even tried disabling services associated with Cortana and they come right back on.
I really do not want this thing. Sometimes I find it running using 50% cpu. What is it doing. I do not have the resources to waste on a program I do not want or need.

shortcuts don't work on start or taskbar
Just installed Windows 10 - totally successful BUT: no shortcuts/links work in start menu, desktop or taskbar except for links to modern UI apps. Even weirder - shortcuts work if palced in saem directory as the target file/exe but not if then moved elsewhere, like desktop. And even weirder - right clicking a short cut and selecting open or run as administrator don't work, but selecting 'run with graphics card' does work.
I've tried every conceivable setting and nothing works. going crazy. This is installed on a Dell laptop.
