View 7 RepliesI'm using Windows 10 and I changed all of my When Computer Sleeps settings and my screen still goes black after about 30 seconds of inactivity. Not really sure why this happens because I changed all of the settings for the screen shutting off to never.
View 6 RepliesI've disabled the screensaver and the auto sleep mode yet when I don't touch my computer for a few minutes it'll go into lock screen and ask me for my code to log back in. I've even set the "Don't show lockscreen" entry to active (in the sort of registry).
How can I get rid of this feature ? I don't want anything to show up when I leave my computer for a few minutes, I want nothing to move.
I installed 10 on three machines and one has a mind of it's own when it comes to sleeping. No matter how I set the power settings or screen savers if I get up and walk away from the machine it has gone into sleep mode when I come back.
View 1 RepliesHow do I wake up Windows 10 if it goes into Hibernate or sleep after a period of in activity?
View 3 RepliesI recently updated from Window 8.1 to Windows 10. The upgrade went fairly well except for my laptop monitor turning off after 1 or 2 minutes of inactivity. I have changed all power settings to appropriate times. At times, normally after a fresh restart, my screen saver kicks in correctly. However, after a few times of working correctly, my monitor begins to turn off again.
View 9 RepliesMy desktop monitors go to sleep after about a minute of inactivity no matter what I set sleep mode to do. I currently have it on "never" and it still sleeps to the lock screen. Extremely annoying. I talked to some others having the same issue but no one has a clue or has seen the issue discussed.
View 6 RepliesI've been using Windows 10 on my pc for quite some time now. There's allways been the option for lock screen on customization, but i've never seen it. I've recently found there are several ways to "lock" the screen on Windows 10 Pc (like using Windows+L).I also remember to read somewhere that usin lock screen reduces the lifetime of the ssd.I would like to know:
- Is there a way put the lock screen automatically, after 1 minute of inactivity (or 5) for example?.
-Is it true that using a lock screen would reduce the lifetime on the ssd?
-What are your personal recommendations about this?.
I didn't know where to put this thread, but because it has to do with system performance, I thought this might be the best place to post my issues with Win 10. Let me get straight to the point:Up-to-date Windows 10 install (ver 1511 OS Build 10586.36)I haven't tested it but it seems like when the computer becomes inactive after a period of time, the whole system freezes - the mouse isn't moving, the desktop remains static on the last windows that were there, the time remains static (it doesn't change), CTRL+ALT+DELETE doesn't work.
Only solution seems to be to a hard reboot. In all other aspects the computer works fine: no virus (as determined by up-to-date version of Free Avast AV), SSD runs super fast, computer reboots, shuts down and goes to sleep perfectly. It's just when I am working on the computer and get sidetracked and when the computer becomes inactive, the computer freezes.
System Specs (other relevant aspects of my system can be viewed on my system specs page):Custom Built: E6700 non-OC4 GB DDR2 RAMGTX 970 (up to date driver: 361.43) Is there some sort of log that I can call up to show what is causing this stall/freeze/hang-up?
I just got a second hand laptop - Acer V3-771G with an Elan touchpad and I put a new SSHD hard drive in it and installed Windows 10 fresh.
I see lots of issues with ELAN touchpads but it seems as though Microsoft has produce one that installs and fixes most scrolling issues.
However, I have a strange one. When I enable vertical scrolling in the driver, it works as long as the mouse is active - and for up to 5 seconds after. But when I stop using the touchpad and go to scroll again after 5 seconds, it doesn't work anymore! It's like it disables it after inactivity - but only 5 seconds?
I've uninstalled and reinstalled drivers, tried various versions - but of course Acer doesn't support Windows 10 on this older model laptop (circa 2012) so there are no specific drivers for it on their site. Everything works except for this scrolling after 5 seconds - which I can recreate every single time.
This might be a stupid question but I havent found a solution for it myself, probably looking in all the wrong places.. would like to be able to have my computer go to the lock screen after an alotted time of inactivity without turning off the screen itself as in the power settings. I usually have screen shutoff/sleep set for longer periods but would like the screen to lock sooner.
View 9 RepliesIn Win 8.1 I had two programs that started automatically when starting my computer. After installing Win 10 only one does and I can't find how to make Windows starting the second
I searched in Settings, I searched for the name of the working program to find out in which file it is hidden to joint the second there but I don't find anything.
I tried everything I can, but can't seem to fix it. I reinstalled windows several times (actually, seven times), trying to get an update to not install, but it still got installed. So basically, what's happening is that whenever my screen is light, it's brightness goes up, and whenever my screen is dark it's brightness goes down. Now I wouldn't have minded if it were not noticeable, but it's very distracting.
View 3 RepliesI'm trying to resolve an issue with a Windows 10 desktop, HP small form factor purchased with OEM Win 7. Windows Update suggested Windows 10 and now the machine boots to the automatic repair screen but there is no mouse or keyboard function where the option panes appear.
While I did purchase the computer myself originally, it was purchased for the use of my church group, and two weeks ago came under the care of my co-deacon and friend. So, let's just say there is no recovery media now for Win 7 or Win 10. I can create a recovery disk here at home from one of my local Win 7 systems, but not sure if that will work or not.
I'd be perfectly happy to un-install Win10 from the machine, but there doesn't seem to be a way to get to the recovery partition... all F-key options have been tried.
This is a Core Duo processor.
With one small decision, Microsoft has made me decide to revert back to 7.
What is that decision? The decision, a staggeringly incompetent one, is to automatically login the previous user on a multi-user system that has no passwords.
Yes - with W10, if you have multiple users with no passwords set, the previous user is automatically logged in at startup.
Who could possibly think that behaviour is ever desirable? It's an absolute howler.
My family and I all use the same computer. We've never needed or wanted passwords - we just want our own desktops, shortcuts etc.
It seems the only way to prevent an automatic login is to make everybody have, and enter, a password. There's no way around that, apparently. Until then, I'm reverting to W7.
So when I'm trying to log on, my computer does the whole automatic repair thing, but constantly loops. Now, I know this has been notified before, even for windows ten, but it seems I just can't fix it. All the solutions on the articles I've seen don't seem to work .
View 6 RepliesHow do I stop automatic W10 updates? Every time I have an update downloaded thing fall apart. Either Outlook stops working (Outlook not available try again later) or my Favorites bar disappears and has to be redefined, or like now, my Adobe is all sc.... up and I cannot delete adobe files or access my adobe files when I am travelling and off line. This Windows 10 is the worst mess I have ever seen in 61 years of IT/IS/Data Processing. My next PC will definitely be a MAC.
View 1 RepliesWhat is the identification number of the last Windows 10 automatic update?
My installation of Windows 10 was done August 14.
The last automatic update I received was KB25533437 on August 15.
I don't use these garbage "apps", nor do I have a Microsoft Account attached to my computer.
Why am I forced to update these bloatware, preinstalled "apps" automatically?
I've been using Windows 10 Home since day one and I still haven't figured out a way to disable automatic app updates. When I go to the Store settings all I get is this:
However, I am the administrator. I know that in Windows 10 Home edition you cannot disable the updates that you get with Windows Update. Does this also include the updates that you get through the Store?
Since the task Idle Maintenance and Regular Maintenance does not present in Task Scheduler anymore in Windows 10, how to disable automatic maintenance?
View 9 RepliesIn Windows 7, I knew how to turn off the annoying (to me) feature that windows were automatically maximized when moved to the edge of the screen. This option no longer seems to be present in the 'ease of access' settings.
View 3 RepliesRecently I got a new gaming PC which came with windows 7. The day after i upgraded to windows 10 and it was working fine. Yesterday i was using my PC and then the task bar disappeared so i decided to restart the computer to try and fix it. When the computer turned on again it went through the normal startup process but when it got to the windows logo it said preparing automatic install and then kept looping through startup and the windows logo. I have tried doing the system repair but when I press F8 nothing happens, so right now all i can do on the computer now is access the BIOS.
View 3 RepliesYesterday my computer started up the automatic repair service when i turned it on. It attempts to diagnose the problem and fails. I've run chkdsk on both the boot and regular partitions of my install drive. I tried to repair using an install disk but it says it cant because my install drive is locked. I also tried resetting from within the recovery environment. When I did it got to 8% and then said it couldn't reset the os as it encounter a problem during the reset. I'm running Windows 10 off an SSD.
View 3 RepliesWindows 10 seems to like rebooting without my permission - such as when I have a fullscreen game open, and I also miss the notification to postpone. How do I disable this? I don't have windows pro and thus cant use gpedit. The registry keys various pages suggested editing don't seem to exist.
I don't want to turn off windows update, I just want my laptop to never ever restart on its own, its a ridiculous "feature".
Microsoft has made it mandatory for Windows 10 users to update their computers. From what I understand, they have set the new operating system to automatically receive new updates by default. I also heard from a colleague that Microsoft recently released a tool that can be used to hide or disable Windows 10 updates selectively.
