BSOD :: Start Up Task Bar Icons Disappear
Feb 12, 2016
Happened both at work and home. At work cost 250 to fix. It all starts with the start up and icons dissappering on the lower task bar. They just disappear. You cannot reboot you have to control alt delete and get task bar to reboot. This will work for awhile. Then will stop working and you have to send your PC to the shop for repair. The repair guy could not figure out what happened had to finally get rid of windows 10 and go back to 7.
Scary the same exact thing is starting to happen on my laptop at home. Icons on the lower task bar are gone and I have to use control alt delete to reboot to get them back... scary thing is I know whats coming. I just spent $460 in repairs because the shop couldn't figure out why windows 10 crashed a month ago... the icons did not disappear but I lost EVERYTHING eventually had to put a new solid state hard drive and reload everything from backups. almost lost all my years of quicken but Fortunately had outside backup.

As per title. I'm thinking this might be video driver related as it happens mostly when I'm windowing a game and opening other apps etc.
Problem:
Usually it looks like this:

I downloaded Windows 10 several hours ago. Nothing in the lower task bar will open. When I left click on the start button, nothing happen. When I right click, I get a menu but nothing will open. When I click in the "Search" area, no cursor appears. I don't know how to get to my pictures or documents.
Why is my start button (or anything else in lower task bar) not working?
Also - I use Avast security protection. Since I downloaded Windows 10, my firewall is turned off with Avast. I clicked a button to turn it on, but I am not being allowed to do so. Do I need to change something in the Windows 10 settings. First I need to learn how to pull up the settings since the start button is not working.

I tried the powershell command, but it did not work. Is there any quick fixes to this? I'm not ever good with OS related problems! Also, I can't use cortana, so I am guessing this is definitely an OS related problem.

I am running Windows 10 x64, my computer shuts off for what ever reason, power outage or what not. No error message and when it reboots i have no icons on my desktop. I have checked to see if a new desktop was created and that wasn't it. Normally it is off a restart/shut down of my PC but it does not happen all the time. I have check to see if "view icons" is turned on and it is. I have also checked to see if the show icons in control panel is checked and that is as well. I have also restarted my computer manually to see if it will fix itself and that does not work either.

When rebooted this issue does not happen. After some time, if I open the hidden systray menu, most of them will disappear as I mouse over them. I do not know if it is triggered by opening a program, a background program, time, or whatever.

Peculiar behaviour lately has surfaced, occasionally without rhyme or reason the taskbar icons disappear (sometimes all,and sometimes a few) for only a moment and then repopulate.I'm not running anything in particular and have my background processes down to a minimum. No ill effect from this happening would just like to find out why,I've thought about rebuilding/refreshing the icon cache but not sure that's going to solve the problem.

I did a clean install, using the Media Creation Tool, of Windows 10 Pro x64 on my Maingear Shift computer (i7 processor, 16 GB RAM) a few weeks ago. I created a number of Quick Launch icons (to the right of the Start Button), and they have survived several weeks and innumerable reboots as I reinstalled all of my programs. This morning, out of the blue, (no programs installed for week now) and no changes to the computer of which I am aware, the Quick Launch icons themselves do not appear. The area of the toolbar, which shows Quick Launch is enabled (you can see the double bars on either side), is there, but there are no icons inside of the Quick Launch area.
I have run sfc /scannow and dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth from an elevated command prompt. SFC reported no resource integrity violations, and DISM reported that the restore operation was successful.
I also followed the POWERSHELL instructions in this Microsoft article: [URL] .... but it had no effect, though it too reported success.
What is interesting is that when I go the left column of the Start Menu, and under "Most Used" and right click on Google Chrome, it shows as pinned to the Taskbar. When I unpin it, the other five of six Quick Launch icons that I had pinned weeks ago to the Quick Launch Toolbar suddenly appear. Then I right click the Google Chrome entry in the "Most Used" column again and pin it to the Taskbar and it reappears. All is well, until I reboot, then it is back to the same old situation of missing Quick Launch icons.
I have done a lot of searching on Google, but haven't found an explanation for this behaviour. I have turned on and off the Quick Launch toolbar, but that has made no difference. I have warm-booted and cold-booted without effect.

A customer brought me a machine with an issue I have never seen before. All desktop icons were gone and the only thing on the desktop is 3 lines in the upper left (opens an empty start menu), 3 lines in the lower left (opens all programs list) and the power button above that. I have managed to bring the desktop icons back but when I click the start menu it switches from the desktop with icons to the above mentioned screen with no icons. When it is on this new screen you can't right click on anything. A new user works as it should.

I have run into a small issue were the icons on the taskbar such as, wifi, battery, sound, and action center will not do anything when clicked, when i click the time it wont open the calendar, if i right click sound and battery i can open it that way but when i right click action centre and click open action centre it wont do anything.
Now my start button wont work.
Seems it was my anti virus causing the issues.

I have just plugged in a second monitor to my PC, the resolution of both monitors are as recommended (1) is 1366 x 768 and the other (2) which is the main display is 1920 x 1080 - I would like to increase the size of the font, task bar icons etc on my main display (2) but when I go to the "advanced sizing of text and other items" and then to the "Change only the text size" I cannot select specific items as this part is grayed out and I cant click on it. Could it be because I am trying to change something on the (2) monitor (even though it is ticked as my main display)?

I'm trying to get my small taskbar to display both time and date, like the regular big taskbar. By default, Windows displays time and date on the taskbar in bottom-right corner. But if you go into taskbar's properties and select the option to show smaller icons, the taskbar becomes a little bit smaller (which is great) and there's no room for date to be displayed (which is not great at all).
I found a few "solutions" for Windows 7, like using some third-party apps to override the default one (but there's all kinds of issues with them), or creating a new toolbar pointing to a folder that is being renamed everyday via schedule (ridiculous!) and so on.Back when I was using Windows 7, I found a dark theme that actually solved this problem (google "cryeR deviantart windows 7 basic black theme"). You had to take ownership and replace the Aero.msstyles file, and then patch some stuff with provided utility. Kinda complicated, but it worked. Now I'm on Windows 10, and I can't find anything that would work. I really like the smaller taskbar, but I would also like to see the date.

I have just upgraded from Win 7 Ultimate to Win 10 build 10240
The sart menu button does not activate anything, search doesn't either, Notification bubble does not open anything either.
Safe mode produces same behaviour, I have uninstalled AVG Anti virus as some people were correlating AV software with this behaviour.
I can right click on the start button but not left click

While trying to discover why my most used list was not showing up on the start menu, I learned that when I right click on the task bar and go to properties, the Start Tab is not present where it should be.

I hit "update and shut down" when I logged off. This morning I first noticed the the Edge icon was gone from my taskbar. I then found that left-clicking on the windows icon now doesn't bring up the Windows 10 start menu. I can still right click and pull up an old start menu. Several of the other icons are not working as before- notifications don't pop up, the clock popup window is gone, the search icon next to the windows icon doesn't function, My HP icon, sticky note icon, Google Chrome icon, and File Explorer icon on the task bar do still work. I can navigate the internet using Chrome but it appears that pretty much all the new Windows 10 functions are disabled.

Got my Win 10 at the lauch day and have been enjoying it until I decided to do some clean up. I ran Ccleaner and Puran utilities reg cleaning tools. After that the start button and task bar became unresponsive.
I tried to google the issue and found out a sort of a solution, but it's not good enough to be permanent. This was that fix:
Right click on the Start Menu button and open Command Prompt (Admin)Enter PowerShell in the command linePaste the following line in the Administrator:
PowerShell Window:
Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register $($_.InstallLocation)AppXManifest.xml}
Wait for the PowerShell to execute the command (ignore a few red error codes).
I'm also having problems with updates which seems to be failing everytime. I was hoping the updates would fix the first problem, but since the updates won't istall, I can't know if they would.
So now I'm thinking about fully resetting the install, but since I don't have external hard drive, I wouldn't want to go that far with this.

I have an AMD 6670 and I just upgraded to Windows 10. At first I couldn't set my resolution back to 1920x1080 but I downloaded the driver and now I'm able to. The issue is that when I set the resolution, it's like everything is stretched out. The taskbar is off the screen on the bottom and same with the icons on the top and sides of the screen. I can see the very top of the taskbar at the bottom, but not enough to click on start or choose any programs that I have open.

This issue just popped up after restarting my computer today. Earlier, all the task bar icons were showing and I could see the time/date, but clicking on them would do nothing. Also whenever I tried to open pictures with "Photos" I would get an error message about something timing out and I would have to use windows explorer.
So I restarted, and when I booted my computer up again, the task bar icons never showed up and the time and date is gone. I can't click on cortana and clicking the windows icon will bring up nothing. I've restarted twice since then but nothing has worked so far.

Windows 10 only offers 49 different colors for the color of the Start Menu and the Task Bar. None of which are light grey colors, like I had in Windows 8.0. Please have us be able to change the color of the Task Bar. Why didn't Microsoft give us a full RGB color spectrum choice of what color we want our start menu to be and our task bar to be, like in Windows 7? Only 49 colors, come on. These 49 colors are in Settings -> Personalization -> Colors
Pics of color choices : [URL]..
I may have to use Start10 in order to get control of the colors.

Sometime in December, 2015 my keyboard Windows button and my task bar Start menu and Search stopped working and without the ability to START I lost all the tiles. Windows has now become very cumbersome to use.
I have given up on Windows 10 and it's too late to recover Windows 7 (Windows 7 was great). Really wish this had not happened as I have been a Windows user since version 3.1. I guess I posted this here because I'm frustrated with the problem and need to air it out. Must buy a new PC.

I'm not getting any error messages on boot up, but the start menu doesn't work and my task bar contains only the start menu, cortana, task view and an icon for no new messages. No clock, none of my programs or even edge. If I hadn't put some of my programs from the taskbar in a folder on the desktop, I'd have a hard time getting to them.
I've rebooted 4 or 5 times since this started on Wednesday and tried the critical error fix of holding down the F8 while rebooting and nothing has worked. I've been running win10 since August and have had the critical error message a few times, but have always been able to clear it before.

For the second time in a row after an update my start button and task bar have stopped working. I downloaded a batch file from a forum site the last time and it worked, so i used it again. My system is now working again. As this appears to be an issue that Microsoft cannot resolve I am now going to turn off automatic updates.
