View 3 RepliesI upgraded from windows 7 ultimate to windows 10. It seemed to install okay and asked me to log on and select setup preferences, which I did. I left it alone to finish setup and it went to sleep. Now I only get a black screen with an active cursor. I've tried multiple hard restarts, entering logon blindly as suggested in other posts and using windows key-p to switch monitors all to no affect. Ctrl-alt-del has no effect. I cannot bring up any screen and so cannot start in safe mode or download video card drivers. I do not have Windows 10 on media.

View 1 RepliesNew Skylake based build with Windows 10 Pro on a 250GB Samsung SSD. After initial startup I decided to format the drive to repartition it and did a clean install of Win10. Shortly after, the wireless connection to the router kept failing every few minutes and I would have to repair it. Then suddenly for no reason I could find I couldn't open the control panel. Clicking the taskbar icon would cause the screen to blink and all the taskbar icons would disappear and reappear. Decided to do a reset and that seemed to work until suddenly, again without warning or reason, I couldn't open the File Explorer and it did the same thing the Control Panel did and couldn't find a way to repair it.
Booted up from the Win10 install USB device and did another clean install of Win10. Got all of my programs reinstalled and running and all was well so I quickly did a system and partition backup with Todo. The wireless connection was working but suddenly I once again couldn't open the control panel. I had installed all Windows updates after doing the backups including the new version update but I don't know if there was anything in there that might have triggered the control panel issue. I booted up with the Todo emergency boot disc and did a partition restore. Everything is once again functional and I'm delaying running any Windows updates. Ran NOD32 virus scans and SFC /SCANNOW and neither found any problems or issues.
I'm just cruising along at the moment waiting for another incidence to occur. Is it possible I have a flaky SSD? Windows 10 seems to have a few issues with SSDs such as showing two instances of the same drive in File Explorer.
Windows 10 email opens fine and all my email accounts appear correctly, but when I open an account to read mail, the program crashes when I try to delete an item or move to the next item. I have to reopen the program and start again.
View 1 RepliesQuite often (60% of the time) clicking on Windows Explorer results in no action whether from the tool bar or from the Windows screen for a very long period of time. There is nothing showing to determine if there is a background program causing Explorer to wait. When it eventually opens, more than one screen comes up because the impatient among us have clicked more than once (personal problem). I often start by going to Explorer for a file I was working on so this is a real pain.

View 2 RepliesWhen I restart my computer I have a message that I have an app open. But I never saw this one until I installed W10. It says it is Faceaway Countdown dlg.I looked on the app list from the computer and it is not there. I searched google and did not see it.Is this a part of MSFT or google because I use their browser ? Or is it phishing ?
View 1 RepliesI've had Windows 10 for about a month now. Everything has been going well. Then this AM I tried to open a folder on my desktop but it will not open. I right click on it to only go back to my home screen.I cant even get into my documents.
No folders what so ever. I clicked on properties to check the securities and all is well there.
Certain .exe files (seemingly ones that don't require an install to run) on my laptop refuse to open, responding to different commands in different ways.
When I first run them, I get a SmartScreen Filter alert. After pressing 'Run Anyway' (scans reveal them to be safe), they will appear to begin to load, but never actually open. This happens every time I try to open them subsequently, although without the SmartScreen alert. I can close the container folder and try again.
If I try to Run as Administrator, however, the folder freezes entirely. I can use other folders, but it takes a File Explorer restart to make the crashed instance disappear. I have tried deleting one of these applications after attempting to open it, and not been allowed to until a full restart, implying they are running constantly after I attempt to start them.
I had assumed this was a problem with SmartScreen, but even after turning it off, the problem persists.
Most other .exe files do work (regedit, games downloaded from Steam, etc.), so I can't understand what's making this small set of files unable to load.
After updated from Win 7 I cannot open IE. No any error message, IE just do not start.
View 5 RepliesSo I did the Windows 10 upgrade (WOOHOO!) Everything went smoothly during the install. As I was checking out the start menu I clicked on the little Settings cog in the lower left. All that happens when I do this is a super quick flash of what I assume is the settings window. Its there and then its gone. I also tried right clicking on my name and picture and the top and hitting change account settings. Same thing happens.
Maybe related: Many of my programs wont set as default, such as chrome and a few games want me to allow permissions EVERY time I open them.
My problem is that a number of my apps are greyed out, (14 at last count) and therefore return the "this app can't open" message. In trying to chase this down, I believe I've read that the problem is related to auto updates, and the lack of required licenses? I would probably rather revert to W7, but it's a number of months now since 10 was installed, so I believe that option is no longer available to me.
View 17 RepliesThis is another by-product of the start menu problem. Once finished with major issues I tried to open my pictures. The pictures are not in windows Photo Gallery but directly on my C drive ie: C:/users/ottilitgirl/Pat's Pictures/Christmas 2014. The pictures do not open and I get this message "This action only valid for products that are currently installed".I just tried again. Today I get the thumbnails but when I try to open them the message is "invalid value for registry"

View 3 RepliesI have 2 computers; e.g. one laptop and one desktop both at Windows 10. Same Microsoft ID, etc. Yesterday, Calendar worked fine. Today, the Mail Icon comes up and just sits there. Can't get any prompts, menus, data, nothing. Desktop works find. People works on both machines. Store on laptop showed Calendar pending. I was able to clear that and now shows installed. But still won't load. Tried the PowerShell fix to no avail. Stopped Windows UPdate service, renamed WindowsSoftwareDistribution folder. Restarted Windows Update service. Still no go!
Understand you can't uninstall/re-install Calendar, People, Mail etc. The working Calendar is pulling from my Google ID, but can't find that Calendar on line.
How do I open .tgz files on Windows 10?
I'm using 8zip app to extract the files, but I still can't open them to pdf. Do I need to convert the files?
I wish opening .tgz files is built into win10 like in OSX.
I cant open my pictures in windows 10 from few days.
View 1 RepliesI recently updated my windows 10 pc. Now when i try to open any app it just crashed right away doesn't matter if its a windows app or not. I tried doing a system restore and that didn't work. It wont even let me reset my computer it just says something went wrong. It runs fine in safe mode so it has to be something running. I have tried end process for everything and its still not working.

so ever since i installed windows 10 on my PC (it was a force install using the media creation tool), i can't open the settings. it crashes as soon as it opens up. it seems that no one has been having this problem, i've googled it. i've tried to open it from many different locations, nothing seems to be working.
View 1 RepliesI have downloaded the MediaCreationToolx64 several times using both Firefox and IE. Have both Run and Save. File saves fine but when I double click on it nothing happens. I am running Win 8.1 on an HP Pavilion 15 laptop and the system checker states I am ready for Windows 10. Why the MediaCreationTool will not start?
