I have 2 Alienware M18X laptops. Both have been reset to factory settings and windows 10 installed via a usb. They are exactly the same computers. One works perfectly but the other freezes or black screens not long after the desktop appears. My question is can i back-up the one that is working and restore it on the 2nd one? Hardware is both the same and diagnostics show there is no fault.

View 1 RepliesSo I was doing a system restore on my newly upgraded Windows 10. It was stuck at 46% so I restarted it (which was a stupid thing I know). After that the laptop won't go beyond the black screen. Whenever I boot the laptop the lenovo logo appears and the black screen after and that's it. I'm really worried now.

Did a restore point and now things are not opening right, applications that use to open just hang...i want to reinstall windows 8.1 BUT i dont want to reinstall Photoshop and other essential programs.
I want to restore and keep files BUT if there is an issue with doing that then ill reinstall from scratch.
I created a Windows 10 restore flash drive on my computer, which was updated to Windows 10. If I use this flash drive to reinstall Windows, will it restore Windows 10, or will it restore the system from the restore partition on my present hard drive?

I cannot find how to restore them on to the new computer, in fact there are very few buttons in the new outlook or whatever it is called.
View 5 RepliesBackground: I was dual-booting Widnows 8.1 (came pre-installed on ACER laptop I recently purchased) and Ubuntu. This worked fine until I decided to take the free upgrade to windows 10 being offered. During the upgrade process, it deleted a partition for Ubuntu and ended up killing both OS. I was stuck with BIOS and how to restore my computer, particularly with both OS being able to co-exist peacefully.
I only needed to access Ubuntu for work purposes and my boss gave me a copy of both windows 8.1 and windows 10 (stand alone clean install). I did successfully install windows 10 but was not able to dual-boot to Ubuntu. Because I needed to prioritize work, I scrapped windows 10 and currently only run Ubuntu.
Good news, I quit my job and no longer need or want Ubuntu! I simply want to go back to the way things were meant to be and have my functioning windows 10- no dual booting. My questions are these: How do I restore my system to its original condition (with windows 8.1, if it still exists somewhere in my motherboard that is)? Considering that I am currently running Ubuntu, what do I have to do to make this successful (with the intention of getting rid of Uubuntu all together)? If I am unable to restore my system, then I will fall back to installing windows 10 (or 8.1 if that fails) clean; how do I extract my product license key from my system? It is not written down anywhere and windows will prompt me for it if I install from a CD.
I was wonding if I can backup OneNote? Like if I want to do a clean install of Win10 in the future. Right now I'm using Notepad for all of my notes but thinking about moving everything to OneNote if I could back it up.

The "start screen" displays a message saying "Restoring your computer to a previous version of Windows" and I can see that it is working on doing something. I quickly turned it off.
I have updated antivirus/antimalware programs that I run frequently/automatically.
What can be going on, and is there a way to avoid this restoring to start when I turn my computer on?

I purchased a laptop a while ago and it came with windows 10 home. I'd like to upgrade to Windows 10 pro, but instead of paying for an upgrade in the windows store I'd rather use the unused copy of windows 7 ultimate that i already own since you get w10 pro when upgrading from w7 ultimate. All my data is on the C drive so how would I go about backing it up so I can restore it on the new OS? Also would I lose all the drivers and programs for the laptops features such as the webcam, keyboard backlight, etc?
View 5 RepliesI did the upgrade from Windows 7 Ultimate to Windows 10 Pro. Privacy concerns aside, I like Windows 10. I haven't had any problems with software and hardware compatibility. I use 27 different email accounts within WLM 2012, for a variety of reasons. Many of these email accounts have additional folders that I have added. The accounts consist of sbcglobal.net, live.com, msn.com, outlook.com and windowslive.com.
I'm using a Dell XPS-17 L702X laptop with two 500GB internal drives. I will place the WLM 2012 backup on my second internal drive, Drive D. I need to know exactly how to backup WLM to this second drive so that I don't lose any saved emails in the various accounts. I will then import everything from this backup to the clean installation of Windows 10. Is this possible, or will I have to install WLM 2012 on Windows 10 and then add and configure each email account?
I installed windows 10 technical preview yesterday . I found a problem with system restore. It goes through everything normally but after it reboots I get an error. In the details it says:
System restore failed to extract the original copy of the directory from the restore point.

Maybe I have a misunderstanding of how System Restore works. Yesterday I uninstalled a program that I'd like to now get back. The company that made the program no longer offers archive downloads for that program in particular. Today it occurred to me that I could do a System Restore to when the program was still on this laptop & all would be returned as it was.
The first 2 times I tried was a total fail for returning the program but when I went back to a week ago it was there. Something is missing & it errors asking for the old install software that doesn't exist anymore (the program was purchased it 2008).
I have recently had to re-install Windows 10 and had problems before so decided this time to do a clean install and then run the system image backup. This went well but when it came to the testing of the restore a problem arose. I was using the Repair Disc created after the system image backup completed and could not understand the source file indicated was not where I had put the backup.
The restore said the file was on the C: drive which was what I was trying to restore to.
I have a projector connected to my pc. I watch movies on it with vlc. When I turn it off, and open vlc, it opens on the turned off projector screen. How do I restore it? Or how do I get vlc not to open on a turned off screen?
View 8 RepliesWith Adobe Reader DC, the folks at Adobe made every thumbnail a plain pdf icon. They removed the preview where the pdf icon is replaced by the first page of the pdf file. Seeing the pdf content is much more useful than just looking at the same icon for every file.

I recently installed an SSD and I found out while running Samsung's OS Optimization disk that it has turned off System Restore by default. I of course can turn it back on, but I wanted to get feedback on turning on System Restore on an solid state drive.
View 7 RepliesAfter trying to get too Familiar with Win10 and my new HP Pavilion Laptop (2wks ago), I now find I've lost my Desktop look and settings.
This has happened about 5hrs ago, initially I did not require a password at Start-up then after a little familiarizing ''finger poking'' I discovered that I then had to use one, my Microsoft Account.. outlook.com.. password !?
I did two upgrades - one 10 home x86 and the other 10 home x64 - and they completed without error. The only issue I'm seeing on both of them is I can't re-enable a number of auto-starting items that I disabled before running the upgrade. I used the Ccleaner startup manager to turn them off; now when I run Ccleaner the disabled items show however when I enable them they don't stay enabled. I ran System Configuration (aka Msconfig) and it is showing "selective startup", however changing to "Normal startup" also doesn't stick. I've been able get a few of the apps to auto-start again by toggling their "start with windows" option, but the other apps don't have that setting. Uninstall/reinstall would probably fix them, but I was hoping for a simpler way.
View 8 RepliesJust bought a new Windows 10, Office 2016, Ultra HD Lenovo computer. Already having issues, surprise surprise! Not only are there scaling/blurry issues with some apps, but Windows Backup and Restore is displaying the following error:

I'm trying to backup to an external Seagate drive.
I've tried several fixes as I was previously having this issue too ([URL]), but nothing has worked.
Another problem I'm finding with 10 is as follows. With 7 it was easy to minimize an open program. It disappeared to Explorer and could be clicked on and restored. Under 10 you can minimize, but only the first one is recognized. If you minimized a second program it supplants the first, the first disappears they don't stack up, the first is lost. Is there a way to stack up the minimized programs so they aren't lost. It takes time to have to go and retrieve the program from Google.
View 3 RepliesI upgraded my system to Windows 10 back on Aug 6th and didn't have any problems until yesterday. I won't go into the details of that issue but it forced me to restore Windows 10 from an Acronis TrueImage backup I had taken on the 8/7. Although the restore went well and Windows 10 is back up and running, I am unable now to run Windows update as each time I do so it give me this 0x8024402F error that says that there was some problem installing updates.
Note that this is not an internet connection error as I can browse the internet and download updates to other apps. I have tried the Windows 10 Troubleshooter for Windows update as an Admin and it says it found a configuration problem and fixed it but I still get the error. I have run various system scans and a CHKDSK and they find nothing wrong. I have searched the internet high and low for a solution this problem but the only thing I find seems to be focused on fixes to Windows 7 and Windows 8.x, not Windows 10.
An update (very large) downloaded overnight. Now no e-mail; no AVG, no system restore and probably others I've not found yet. What are Microsoft Playing at. AVG will not reinstall and windows live mail will not start, even after reinstall.
